He Ziqiu and Qin Meiyang agreed on three ground rules. He Ziqiu also arranged for Qin Meiyang to work at his shop during the summer break so she could experience what it feels like to earn money. Ling Xiao chimed in, saying that if Qin Meiyang didn’t want to work, she could go shopping for furniture with Chen Ting tomorrow.
Qin Meiyang panicked a little and asked Ling Xiao if he really intended to let Chen Ting return to settle down in China. She hoped Ling Xiao would come up with a solution, but he said there was nothing he could do—Chen Ting had never cared about his feelings. If she had, he wouldn’t have only just come back from Singapore now. He Ziqiu was confused by Ling Xiao’s words, and Qin Meiyang didn’t explain.
Chen Ting went to the hospital where Ling Xiao works and waited for him to get off duty. She kept thinking about what Ling Heping had said to her, the medicine Ling Xiao took at home, and the fact that he couldn't sleep at night. Feng Xixi happened to see Chen Ting and went up to greet her. The two chatted briefly and added each other on WeChat.
When Ling Xiao got off work, he and Chen Ting went to a nearby shop to talk. Ling Xiao was clearly impatient and didn’t want to continue the conversation. Chen Ting was hurt by his attitude and told him he could talk to her about anything on his mind. Ling Xiao suddenly looked up and said he wanted to marry Li Jianjian.
Chen Ting was surprised, but she verbally expressed support for his decision, although she felt things were moving too quickly between him and Li Jianjian. Qi’s father suddenly called Qi Mingyue out. He had been staying in a hotel the past few days and told Qi Mingyue he was planning to divorce Jin Yuxiang. Qi Mingyue was shocked—she had thought he was just saying that out of anger.
But Qi’s father said the house-buying matter made him realize he couldn’t go on living with Jin Yuxiang. After saying that, he left. Qi Mingyue was worried about Jin Yuxiang, but her calls couldn’t get through since she had been blocked, so she borrowed a phone and called her.
Upon learning Qi’s father wanted a divorce, Jin Yuxiang got angry and said he could come home and get the household registration book—they would go to the Civil Affairs Bureau to divorce immediately. When Qi Mingyue got home, she was in a bad mood and wanted to talk to Tang Can, but Tang Can was busy picking out clothes to accompany Zhuang Bei’s mother to celebrate Zhuang Bei’s grandmother’s birthday.
She gave Qi Mingyue a few words of comfort and then quickly changed and went downstairs. Zhuang Bei was already waiting in the car. Watching Tang Can walk toward him, Zhuang Bei suddenly felt a spark. Zhuang Bei’s mother was overjoyed to see Tang Can and was especially regretful to hear that Tang Can was no longer acting. That night, when Li Jianjian got home, Tang Can and Qi Mingyue weren’t there, only Qin Meiyang was.
Qin Meiyang suddenly asked how far things had progressed between Li Jianjian and Ling Xiao, and warned her not to get physically involved with Ling Xiao. From her point of view, she felt that Li Jianjian and Ling Xiao absolutely couldn’t get married because Chen Ting would never agree. Li Jianjian didn’t take it seriously and even joked that if Chen Ting gave her five million, she’d leave Ling Xiao. But Qin Meiyang was serious.
She said that when Ling Xiao graduated from college, Chen Ting didn’t let him come back because she didn’t want to see Ling Heping or Li Haichao’s daughter—both were people she hated most. That’s why she didn’t come back herself and wouldn’t let Ling Xiao return either. Qin Meiyang said Ling Xiao couldn’t win against Chen Ting, not in the past and not now, simply because Chen Ting was his mother.
At the noodle shop, Hong Ying and Aunt Qian were having noodles when He Mei happened to drop by to learn from Li Haichao how to cook He Ziqiu’s favorite dishes. Aunt Qian recognized He Mei and pulled her aside to chat. After a brief exchange, Li Haichao came back. Seeing the familiarity between He Mei and Li Haichao, Hong Ying felt that Li Haichao had someone in his heart and wasn’t telling her.
Li Haichao explained that he was only meeting He Mei for He Ziqiu’s sake, but Hong Ying didn’t believe him. She even said she was only interested in him because he was a good person. Li Haichao wasn’t upset, but He Mei stood up for him, saying Li Haichao was indeed a good person, and if they weren’t a good match, he just didn’t want to say so to avoid hurting others.
She added that while Hong Ying was drawn to Li Haichao’s good nature, Li Haichao liked her for her looks—everyone wants something, and no one is nobler than anyone else. Hong Ying was at a loss for words. After that, He Mei pulled Li Haichao away. As they walked and talked, He Mei asked about Hong Ying. Li Haichao was a bit embarrassed and said Aunt Qian had arranged it at Li Jianjian’s request.
He then mentioned how Li Jianjian really wanted He Mei and He Ziqiu to reconcile. He Mei was surprised, saying she remembered Li Jianjian didn’t like her as a child. Li Haichao told her it wasn’t that she didn’t like her, she just didn’t want a stepmother. He Mei followed up by asking if that meant it was okay to be Li Jianjian’s stepmother now. Li Haichao didn’t catch on and said there would be no problem.
After saying it, he realized something was off, but He Mei had already shyly walked a few steps ahead, and he didn’t feel comfortable pressing further. When Zhou Miao got to the studio, he mysteriously pulled Du Juan aside. He took out a school paper whose front page featured an exclusive interview with Li Jianjian’s senior, Yu Fei. In the interview, Yu Fei made veiled accusations that Li Jianjian’s work “Three Little Friends” had plagiarized his “The Three of Us.”
Du Juan quickly brought the paper to Li Jianjian. She tried calling Yu Fei to get an explanation, but he didn’t answer. Li Jianjian lost her motivation to keep working and left the studio early. When Li Jianjian got home, she happened to see Chen Ting and Ling Xiao’s aunt standing outside Ling Xiao’s place. Chen Ting was calling Ling Xiao to ask for the door code, but he refused to tell her.
When Chen Ting saw Li Jianjian, she hung up and asked her to help unlock the door. Ling Xiao, worried about Li Jianjian being alone with Chen Ting, immediately dropped his work and rushed home.
