Li Jianjian feels awkward after chatting briefly with Ling Xiao about He Ziqiu and says she needs to return to her studio. He Ziqiu then arrives at the hospital to see Ling Xiao, who asks him what surprise he is preparing. He Ziqiu refuses to reveal anything, saying Ling Xiao will find out in due time.
He Ziqiu states that Zhao Huaguang can no longer control him and that he intends to stay this time, wanting to be filial to Li Haichao and take care of Li Jianjian. Ling Xiao asks how he plans to take care of her, and He Ziqiu says he wants things to be like before. Ling Xiao points out that the past nine years have changed all three of them, and Li Jianjian is no longer a child.
He mentions that in the first two years after they left, things were fine, but later, the three had less and less to say to each other. He Ziqiu suggests forming an alliance with Ling Xiao, knowing Li Jianjian has always listened to him, and believing Ling Xiao has a plan to win her over. Ling Xiao claims he has no strategies and advises He Ziqiu to let time cultivate their relationship.
He also urges He Ziqiu to go home soon, as Li Haichao misses him. Ling Xiao later removes his mask and greets Li Jianjian, who recognizes him and realizes Qi Mingyue tricked her into seeing him, as she knew he was a dentist. Ling Xiao used to take Li Jianjian to the dentist and promised to stay by her side. Now, he has fulfilled that promise by becoming a dentist and treating her.
After leaving Ling Xiao, He Ziqiu goes to the house he has rented opposite Li Jianjian's. He paid a high price for it. The apartment was originally rented by Qi Mingyue for Ling Xiao. Unaware that He Ziqiu has moved in, she calls a cleaning service to clean the apartment for Ling Xiao. However, when the cleaning service arrives, they find He Ziqiu has moved in.
He Ziqiu, just out of the shower and not fully dressed, opens the door and quickly retreats into the bathroom. Neither recognizes the other. Qi Mingyue calls the landlord, who explains that He Ziqiu is a relative who suddenly returned for work, so the apartment is no longer available for rent. Qi Mingyue tries to negotiate with He Ziqiu, explaining she rented the place for her crush, and ruining things would make her lose face.
He Ziqiu refuses to cooperate and threatens to come out if she doesn't leave, forcing Qi Mingyue to leave. He Ziqiu has opened a coffee shop near their old high school. He asks Du Juan to invite Li Jianjian, telling her he wants to buy her wood carvings. When Li Jianjian enters, the initially dark room lights up, revealing a table full of cakes, but no one is visible.
Suddenly, there is thunder and lightning outside, startling Li Jianjian, and she drops her phone. As she bends to pick it up, she sees He Ziqiu's feet and is startled again, jumping up to find He Ziqiu.
He Ziqiu secretly returned without going home to prepare the opening, planning to lure Li Jianjian and Li Haichao with free cake coupons and surprise them, but Li Jianjian says Li Haichao is busy and would dismiss the coupon call as a sales call. He Ziqiu is embarrassed and asks Li Jianjian to try his cake, but she's uncomfortable after her dental appointment and only eats a small bite.
The atmosphere becomes awkward, and Li Jianjian brings up the wood carvings, offering to find him good material and carve a three-legged toad for him. Later, He Ziqiu makes a table of desserts and insists Li Jianjian try them. She reluctantly eats a bite, and is surprised by how good it tastes. He tries to get her to eat more, but she refuses due to her tooth discomfort, and He Ziqiu backs down when he sees she's unhappy.
She then leaves as the rain subsides. That evening, after Tang Can returns home, Qi Mingyue tells her about Ling Xiao's return. Tang Can is angry, seeing Ling Xiao and He Ziqiu as ungrateful, but Qi Mingyue defends Ling Xiao. Tang Can's tough exterior fades when Ling Xiao actually arrives. Qi Mingyue asks her to make tea and tells Ling Xiao that the landlord rented the apartment across the hall to a relative.
Tang Can, overhearing this, assumes it is Zhuang Bei, whom she met at the elevator. Soon, Li Jianjian comes home, unaware that Ling Xiao is there. She complains about how awkward it was to see Ling Xiao and He Ziqiu, feeling uncomfortable around them. As she complains, Ling Xiao emerges from the bathroom, telling Li Jianjian to be careful with what she eats. Li Jianjian is mortified that he overheard her complaints.
During dinner, Ling Xiao suggests renting the apartment across the hall together. Tang Can, believing it's Zhuang Bei, meticulously dresses up to help Ling Xiao negotiate the lease, but there's confusion and they realize He Ziqiu is living there. He Ziqiu reveals that he pretended to be the landlord's relative in order to rent the apartment, and Ling Xiao jokes that he is a rich second-generation heir.
Looking at Qi Mingyue, He Ziqiu remembers what she said about her crush, and realizes she likes Ling Xiao. Afraid He Ziqiu will reveal her secret, Qi Mingyue impulsively throws a glass of water on him. He Ziqiu goes home to change clothes, and Qi Mingyue seeks him out, begging him to keep her secret.
She threatens to spread rumors about him having a physical defect if he reveals her secret, emphasizing her power over him since they were alone together. He Ziqiu is frightened and notes how different Qi Mingyue is now compared to before. Ling Xiao then comes to He Ziqiu and asks to share the apartment with him and He Ziqiu agrees.
Later that night, Li Jianjian can't sleep and seeks out Qi Mingyue, and the two end up in Tang Can's room. While wearing face masks, they talk about Ling Xiao and He Ziqiu. Tang Can dislikes them, while Qi Mingyue defends them. They then turn to Li Jianjian, asking how she feels. Li Jianjian says their relationship used to be great because they were young and always together.
When she was in school, she used to look forward to their return during vacations, but after repeated disappointments, she stopped expecting it. Now that they are back, Li Jianjian feels uncomfortable and estranged. However, she knows that if she doesn't get along with Ling Xiao and He Ziqiu, Ling Heping and Li Haichao will be upset.
She recalls going to ancestral ceremonies with Li Haichao and noticing that the less familiar the relatives were, the more enthusiastic their greetings were. She decides to treat Ling Xiao and He Ziqiu as distant relatives she hasn't seen in a long time. She says that she and He Ziqiu used to be very close, but now they are strangers.
