The Empress personally visited the place where the Little Black Dragon was confined. Out of hatred for the dragon's past actions that led to the loss of her beloved son, the Empress had already drained her cultivation and frozen the entire cold pool. She confronted the Little Black Dragon, remarking that she never expected the dragon to take human form for Chen Changsheng and find him interesting.
The Little Black Dragon retorted that Chen Changsheng was at least not as cold and heartless as the Empress, as he cared about others, unlike the Empress who could abandon her own son. Enraged, the Empress declared that if not for the Little Black Dragon being manipulated by the black-robed figure in the past, she would not have had to sacrifice everything.
She then vowed to use all of the Little Black Dragon's already-drained lifelong cultivation to strengthen the great formation, ensuring that no one could ever rescue her. At the Empress's request, Mo Yu sought out Xu Yourong to apologize, admitting she had almost killed Chen Changsheng. Xu Yourong was shocked by the revelation but relieved to hear he was fine.
Xu Yourong told Mo Yu not to trouble Chen Changsheng further, explaining that their marriage was an arrangement made by her grandfather, and Chen Changsheng was innocently drawn into it. However, seeing Mo Yu's continued concern about the marriage, Xu Yourong informed her that Chen Changsheng would be attending the Green Vine Banquet and asked Mo Yu to relay a message: she wanted him to publicly annul their engagement there.
Mo Yu was stunned, questioning why Xu Yourong would take such a drastic step, suggesting merely retrieving the marriage contract would suffice. Xu Yourong explained that a public annulment would provide her with an excuse for future peace, allowing her to return to Holy Maiden Peak to cultivate and stay out of worldly affairs once she found the key to Zhou Garden.
Mo Yu expressed concern that Xu Yourong was being too hard on herself, and that Chen Changsheng lacked the standing to dare break off their engagement. Xu Yourong countered that Chen Changsheng had been eager to annul it upon arriving in the Divine Capital, so this would simply be granting his wish. Mo Yu, though still reluctant, agreed to deliver the message. Mo Yu then found Chen Changsheng.
He immediately asked if she was there to kill him again, but she assured him she was only delivering a message from Xu Yourong. Chen Changsheng wondered why Xu Yourong wouldn't deliver the message herself. Mo Yu informed him that Xu Yourong wanted him to break off their engagement at the Green Vine Banquet and to stop pursuing her. Chen Changsheng showed concern for Xu Yourong's reputation, asking if a public annulment wouldn't harm it.
Mo Yu found it surprising that he would care about her reputation, then reiterated that Xu Yourong must have her reasons and he should simply comply. Chen Changsheng resignedly agreed, stating that if Xu Yourong was so insistent, he had nothing more to say and would publicly annul the engagement at the Green Vine Banquet. Mo Yu urged him to keep his word. Elsewhere, the black-robed figure spoke with Nan Ke.
Nan Ke confirmed her injuries from her previous encounter with Mo Yu had healed, but expressed regret at failing to find the key. She assured the black-robed figure that the key was definitely at the National Academy, most likely in Chen Changsheng's possession, and she intended to find its whereabouts. The black-robed figure, however, advised caution, noting that the previous commotion had been too significant and the Empress must have taken notice.
To avoid being tracked by her people, he instructed Nan Ke not to go to the National Academy for the time being. He declared that anyone obstructing the demon race's revival, including Chen Changsheng, must be eliminated. Due to Nan Ke's certainty about the Zhou Garden key, the black-robed figure resolved to personally capture Chen Changsheng and sent someone to lure him to Three Lives Riverside under the guise of an invitation from Xu Yourong.
As expected, Chen Changsheng arrived at the designated meeting place, Three Lives Riverside, where the black-robed figure descended from the sky and demanded the Zhou Garden key. Chen Changsheng denied possessing the key and stated that even if he did, he would not surrender it. Unwilling to believe him, the stubborn black-robed figure pressed on. Knowing he was no match, Chen Changsheng had no choice but to flee.
In his escape, he unexpectedly encountered Xu Yourong, who was in pursuit of Nan Ke. This was no time for pleasantries, and Chen Changsheng quickly pulled Xu Yourong into hiding. Just as he thought they might evade danger, an unintended movement from Xu Yourong revealed their presence to the black-robed figure, forcing them to continue their escape.
Unbeknownst to Chen Changsheng, during his disappearance, the straightforward bear-tribe youth Xuanyuan Po had loudly spread the news of his meeting with Xu Yourong at Three Lives Riverside, making it public knowledge. This surprising development prompted Tang Thirty-Six, Mo Yu, and Luoluo to rush towards the area. Even Qiu Shanjun, guided by a junior disciple, was heading in their direction.
The black-robed figure was greatly displeased, having never suffered such a setback in his many years of roaming the pugilistic world, finding himself unable to capture a mere youth. To uphold his formidable reputation, he redoubled his efforts to capture Chen Changsheng. Meanwhile, Chen Changsheng and Xu Yourong were strategizing, analyzing the Demonic Sound Barrier set up by the black-robed figure.
They decided that Xu Yourong would draw out the black-robed figure, allowing Chen Changsheng to observe and identify a weakness in the barrier. Following the plan, Xu Yourong confronted the black-robed figure, and they immediately engaged in combat. However, Xu Yourong was no match for him and was quickly sent flying by a backhand strike. Fortunately, Chen Changsheng intervened in time to catch her. By then, Chen Changsheng had pinpointed the weakness in the Demonic Sound Barrier.
Wielding the spirits of the Great Zhou heroes as his weapon, he summoned them to his aid, successfully thwarting the black-robed figure. Xu Yourong was deeply impressed by Chen Changsheng's heroic display. To her surprise, Chen Changsheng, noticing the Wind-Seeking Crane that had fallen from her, recognized her as Little Rong'er. He began recounting her various preferences and habits. Speechless, Xu Yourong could not find the words to speak, and instead simply requested to meet him under the moon.
Just as a romantic moment was unfolding, Luoluo's loud voice once again reached Chen Changsheng and Xu Yourong, forcing them to part ways hastily. Chen Changsheng was surprised to see Qiu Shanjun among the arriving crowd, creating a subtle awkwardness in the atmosphere. Later that tranquil night, Xu Yourong arrived at the small bridge where she had arranged to meet Chen Changsheng. Hearing the familiar melody played on the xun, she felt a sudden urge to flee.
However, looking into Chen Changsheng's clear eyes, Xu Yourong quickly regained her composure. It was then that she finally understood Chen Changsheng's tragic fate: he was not long for this world. For reasons unknown, perhaps to offer Chen Changsheng a glimmer of hope or to create an excuse for herself, Xu Yourong unexpectedly withdrew her agreement to the annulment. Instead, she instructed Chen Changsheng to first secure the top rank in the Grand Court Examination, and then they would reconsider.
The next day, driven by his desire to help the Little Black Dragon at the bottom of the pool, Chen Changsheng gathered all the delicious food Xuanyuan Po had made and even coerced Tang Thirty-Six into a generous treat. However, when he arrived at the cold pool with the provisions for the hungry Little Black Dragon, he was shocked to find it completely frozen over.
With the cold pool now inaccessible, Chen Changsheng turned his thoughts to the North New Bridge, recalling that the Little Black Dragon had mentioned being suppressed beneath it. After making numerous inquiries, he eventually learned from Xu Yourong that the "North New Bridge" was not a bridge at all, but actually a well.
The Little Black Dragon had previously informed him that the formation holding her could only be broken if the North New Bridge was submerged by the Luo River, which seemed a distant possibility. Elated by his new discovery, Chen Changsheng immediately rushed to the well and, without hesitation, leaped into it. This action greatly alarmed Luoluo, who was following behind him, fearing that her master had lost his mind.
