Under a clear sky, Chen Changsheng, Tang Sanshiliu, Luoluo, and Xuanyuan Po enjoyed a pleasant outing in the countryside. Surrounded by food, wine, and dear friends, Chen Changsheng momentarily forgot the shadow cast by his illness, reveling in the joy of the moment. However, peril was closer than he knew. Driven by persistent jealousy, Tianhai Ya'er had stolen the Empress's bestowed divine weapons, the Thunder Arrow and Blazing Sun Bow, intending to assassinate Chen Changsheng.
As Chen Changsheng and Tang Sanshiliu were hunting, a volley of arrows rained down. The divine weapons proved incredibly powerful; even with Chen Changsheng's barrier protecting them, the Thunder Arrows broke through, forcing them to flee. Tang Sanshiliu was struck in the arm. Meanwhile, Luoluo and Xuanyuan Po also saw the arrow shower. Luoluo urged Xuanyuan Po to find the archer while she rushed to Chen Changsheng.
Xuanyuan Po swiftly located Tianhai Ya'er and drove him off, averting further danger for Chen Changsheng. However, Chen Changsheng discovered that the arrow that struck Tang Sanshiliu was coated with a potent poison. To save Tang Sanshiliu, Chen Changsheng visited the Herb Garden to gather herbs, where he encountered the Empress again. He already suspected the divine arrow and, combined with Xuanyuan Po's description, was certain Tianhai Ya'er was behind the attack.
He presented the arrow to the Empress, hoping for a clue about the antidote. The Empress, outwardly calm, knew Tianhai Ya'er was involved. When confronted, Tianhai Ya'er feigned ignorance and claimed he didn't know the arrow was poisoned, saying he was "itching to try it." He acted remorseful, making it difficult for the Empress to press him further.
However, Mo Yu, standing nearby, overheard Tianhai Ya'er's flippant remark that "the National Academy can prepare a coffin," causing her face to visibly whiten. Later, Mo Yu used the pretense of escorting Tianhai Ya'er out of the palace to confirm that the injured and poisoned person was indeed Tang Sanshiliu. Overcoming her pride, she secretly went to the National Academy under the cover of night. Seeing Tang Sanshiliu lying pale and helpless, she felt a sudden, inexplicable heartache.
She wished he would get up and argue with her, annoy her, rather than lie there as if on the verge of death. Chen Changsheng entered, surprising her, and she admitted she came to check on Tang Sanshiliu, envying the friendship between Chen Changsheng and his companions. She asked Chen Changsheng to do his best to heal Tang Sanshiliu, and if not possible, to inform her.
Battling her fears, Mo Yu eventually decided to plead with the Empress for Tang Sanshiliu's life. She reported that Chen Changsheng harbored no suspicions against the Tianhai family, but Tang Sanshiliu was on the brink of death from the poisoned arrow. However, the Empress revealed that she had been investigating the Tang family for colluding with monsters and ordered Mo Yu to thoroughly investigate the matter, confiscating their property if evidence was found.
The Empress seemed indifferent to Tang Sanshiliu's fate. Mo Yu, though maintaining a calm exterior, was internally shaken, realizing that Tang Sanshiliu's life was at stake, and his family might be ruined. Chen Changsheng toiled day and night, knowing that if he couldn't create an antidote, Tang Sanshiliu would die. With no other immediate solution, he realized that only his own blood might provide a temporary reprieve. After consuming Chen Changsheng's blood, Tang Sanshiliu quickly regained consciousness.
However, the family crisis allowed no time for recovery. Uncle Jin arrived to inform them that the Tang family was under official investigation for its alleged involvement in the Qingyun List murder case, which implicated Tang family weapons, and that the Empress had ordered a full inquiry. Many of their assets were already being transferred from the capital to Wenshui to protect them.
Tang Sanshiliu rushed back to his family home to see his father but was blocked by his elder brother, Tang Hai. Tang Sanshiliu questioned him about the family's troubles and the accusations of colluding with monsters. Tang Hai, reminding Tang Sanshiliu of his past disinterest in family affairs, vehemently denied any collusion and refused to let him see their father, who was "recovering from injuries." Feeling dejected and helpless, Tang Sanshiliu sought solace in drink.
Chen Changsheng found him later that night. Tang Sanshiliu, declaring himself a genius, asserted that he didn't need sympathy. Chen Changsheng retorted that he was not sympathizing but mocking him, urging him to realize that his path, like Chen Changsheng's own, required inner strength.
He reminded Tang Sanshiliu that he chose the National Academy for himself, and now, even if the Tang family faced ruin, he could choose to become stronger, as "only the strong can choose their own path in life." They discussed Zhou Dufu's notes, which Chen Changsheng hoped to find in Lingxu Pavilion to change his fate, acknowledging it was his only chance.
As the day for Chen Changsheng to enter Lingxu Pavilion approached, the Pope proposed that guards be stationed to protect him from potential monster interference. The Empress agreed, specifically tasking Xu Yourong and Qiu Shanjun with guarding him from outside the pavilion, also instructing Mo Yu to escort Xu Yourong. After Xu Yourong's departure, the Empress privately conversed with Qiu Shanjun.
She acknowledged Xu Yourong's reserved nature and her contact with Chen Changsheng but assured Qiu Shanjun of her full support. The Empress explicitly stated that she would never approve of Xu Yourong and Chen Changsheng being together, affirming that if Xu Yourong were to marry, Qiu Shanjun was the only suitable candidate. She urged him to continue his efforts, pledging her support.
Mo Yu, seeing Xu Yourong on her way to Lingxu Pavilion, reminded her not to let emotions distract her from her cultivation. Chen Changsheng prepared for his entry into Lingxu Pavilion. Tang Sanshiliu offered him some divine beverage for energy, and Xuanyuan Po gave him some specially prepared sliced pork. Luoluo promised to wait outside for his success. As he stood before the grand door, Chen Changsheng's heart was a mix of excitement and anxiety.
He reflected that this was his final chance to change his destiny, and success or failure depended entirely on this endeavor. He wondered if he could truly accept separation from his friends and beloved if he failed, and whether he could truly detach himself from life and death after experiencing all the world's beauty. Outside, Tang Sanshiliu, also anxious, inadvertently revealed to Luoluo and Xuanyuan Po the truth of Chen Changsheng's short lifespan.
Luoluo was devastated to learn her master had less than a year to live and vowed to do everything in her power to help him survive. At the appointed time, Chen Changsheng stepped through the fated door, carrying the hopes of his friends and the weight of his destiny.
