After Chen Changsheng absorbed the star power from the dragon soul jade pendant to break the restrictions on Zhusha's chains, he fell unconscious. Zhusha, now able to manifest as a dragon soul, looked at him with concern, lamenting that his selfless act had severely shortened his already limited lifespan to just one month.
She initially claimed her actions were for herself, but then acknowledged his previous aid in cleansing her marrow and guiding stars into her body, and expressed a desire to help him in return. Having been trapped for nineteen years, Zhusha utilized a fish-dragon transformation through the jade pendant to finally escape Beixin Bridge and experienced the outside world. She was overwhelmed by the sights and sounds, excitedly wanting to try all the delicious foods and even pets she encountered.
As she bought a variety of goods, a wave of sadness for her father washed over her, making her wish to return home. However, upon arriving back at the National Academy and seeing a table laden with food, her spirits lifted, and she happily indulged. Soon after, Tang Sanshiliu arrived to inform Chen Changsheng that Tianhai Chengwu was coming to the National Academy with his men. Chen Changsheng knew this visit was surely about the jade pendant.
He entrusted the pendant to Luoluo for safekeeping before rising to greet Tianhai Chengwu. Chen Changsheng refused to back down, no matter how much Tianhai Chengwu threatened him. As their standoff intensified, Mo Yu arrived, interrupting the confrontation. She questioned Tianhai Chengwu's grand display over a family matter, reminding him that the Grand Examination was imminent and that she, entrusted by the Emperor to oversee it, wished to avoid any disturbances.
Mo Yu then wished Tianhai Ya'er success in the examination, causing Tianhai Chengwu to back down, albeit with a promise of future retribution. Afterward, Mo Yu spoke privately with Tang Sanshiliu, expressing her growing suspicion about the Tang family due to the lack of clues in their investigation. Tang Sanshiliu asserted his unwavering belief in his family, vowing to personally root out any demon spies if they existed, and expressed his determination not to give up on the Tang family.
Mo Yu, however, hinted at a more difficult outcome and questioned the National Academy's chances in the upcoming Grand Examination. With the Grand Examination approaching, students from various sects and academies were engrossed in intense training, all hoping to achieve a high ranking. Chen Changsheng also harbored great hopes for the examination, seeing it as his only chance to live.
Luoluo, observing Chen Changsheng's somber mood as he thought of Xu Yourong, felt a pang of sadness, as she secretly harbored feelings for him but understood his heart belonged to Xu Yourong. Wishing only to be by his side, Luoluo presented Chen Changsheng with a jade pendant from her parents, explaining that it contained a beam of golden divine light from the White Emperor, capable of blocking a fatal blow during a critical moment.
Chen Changsheng confided in her that he missed Xu Yourong and worried about seeing her again before the crucial Grand Examination. Luoluo then revealed that it was Xu Yourong who had secretly helped him when he was imprisoned by finding a witness. She also noted that Xu Yourong carried many burdens and dared not let them go. Meanwhile, Xu Yourong and Qiu Shanjun had arrived in Tianliang County, the place where Zhou Dufu was said to have died in battle.
Xu Yourong believed this location was crucial to finding the key to Zhou Garden, noting that the legendary summer snow during Zhou Dufu's death indicated his mastery of the Profound Ice Divine Skill. Qiu Shanjun reflected on the harsh realities faced by cultivators, where death was an ordinary occurrence. As Xu Yourong used her divine consciousness to search for the entrance, she unexpectedly encountered a remnant of Zhou Dufu's divine consciousness, which lashed out and injured her.
Immediately after, two assassins, one disguised as Gou Hanshi, emerged and attacked. Qiu Shanjun, momentarily distracted by the fake Gou Hanshi, was injured but bravely managed to escape with the injured Xu Yourong. The black-robed figure was informed of their escape and ordered the two Seven Killers to infiltrate the Grand Examination in Divine Capital, assassinating human elites and expressing particular concern about a certain "fate star."
After recuperating from her injuries, Xu Yourong suggested returning to the Divine Capital to continue their search for the Zhou Garden key. However, Qiu Shanjun suspected her true motive was to see Chen Changsheng, especially when she insisted on transforming into a phoenix and flying back to Divine Capital despite the stormy weather, further confirming his belief that she harbored deep feelings for Chen Changsheng.
Xu Yourong's concern for Chen Changsheng was not unfounded; Mo Yu, whom Xu Yourong had entrusted with Chen Changsheng's care, intended to use the Grand Examination to prevent Chen Changsheng from winning, thus ensuring his eventual demise, especially after learning of his shortened lifespan. Additionally, the black-robed figure had instructed two Seven Killers to disguise themselves as academy disciples and infiltrate the examination to assassinate top-ranking experts on the Azure Cloud List.
As the Grand Examination commenced, Mo Yu and Tianhai Ya'er ensured that obstacles were placed in Chen Changsheng's path. The first round was a divine consciousness test, where students had to memorize a voluminous imperial secret text within a set time. This text had never before been seen, making its memorization incredibly challenging. Despite others attempting to disrupt the National Academy, Chen Changsheng maintained unwavering focus, rapidly memorizing every page.
After the time limit, jade slips were distributed for students to answer questions by placing their hands on them, lighting a chess piece for each correct answer. The goal was to connect two pieces to form a line, with the largest overall pattern determining the winner. Tianhai Ya'er and Gou Hanshi (the real one, it is presumed) swiftly began drawing their patterns.
In contrast, Tang Sanshiliu, Luoluo, and Xuanyuan Po from the National Academy struggled, having been distracted earlier, and needed Chen Changsheng's help to answer questions and draw. Mo Yu, witnessing their predicament, felt confident that Chen Changsheng would be unable to win the top prize with such a disadvantaged team. However, just before the time expired, Chen Changsheng rapidly answered all the remaining questions, drawing the largest possible circle and successfully defeating Tianhai Ya'er.
It then became clear that his initial, seemingly chaotic pattern was a deliberate strategy to mislead his opponents before seamlessly connecting the pieces to maximize his score. After the competition, the examination official announced the results: the Thirteenth Division of Qingyao was eliminated, while Lishan Sword Sect secured first place. Chen Changsheng felt a tinge of disappointment but was not surprised, knowing that many wished to suppress him. He resolved to do his best and never give up.
