Yan You once again checked on the Spirit-Vanishing Arrow, still suspended above Xu Feng's study. He murmured to himself that it must be fate. The Moon Immortal then appeared behind him, asking what kind of fate he was referring to. Fearing his schemes would be exposed, Yan You quickly pulled the Moon Immortal aside. The two found they were very congenial and decided to go to a wine shop to chat over some osmanthus wine.
The Moon Immortal excitedly recounted how much fun he had with Yan You's brilliant plan, wanting to know how he came up with it. Yan You simply said, "Experience is the best teacher." The Moon Immortal admitted that despite making matches for years, his understanding of love was purely theoretical and that he needed Yan You's guidance.
As they left, the Moon Immortal expressed a desire to check on Xu Feng, but Yan You dissuaded him, saying Xu Feng was busy with official duties and, as a mortal, couldn't be spoken to. He suggested they just enjoy the "beautiful night hours" together. Upon returning to Dongting Lake, Yan You heard his foster mother scolding a little red carp, who she called "Li."
She was angry because Li was disobedient and played in the mire despite her providing him with good food and clothes to be a "decent carp." She made the red carp promise not to play in the mire again, threatening severe punishment if he fooled her. Yan You then reported his failure to retrieve the Spirit-Vanishing Arrow. His foster mother became hysterical, accusing him of lying and reminding him that she hated being fooled.
Yan You tried to defend Xu Feng, saying he was innocent, but his foster mother retorted that Xu Feng's mother, the Heavenly Empress, meant he had to pay the price. She declared her intention to make the Heavenly Empress feel the agonizing pain of losing a son. She then demanded to know the arrow's location, intending to retrieve it and kill Xu Feng herself.
Realizing his foster mother was "going to be insane," Yan You quickly promised to find a way to get the arrow back. His foster mother warned him of severe punishment if he disappointed her again. As she let the red carp go, she affectionately told him he was a red carp from now on, not a little green snake, and that she would never let him suffer any injustice.
Yan You watched, worried that he couldn’t let his foster mother continue her descent into madness. He thought that perhaps only Run Yu could stop her. Sui He, distraught after Yan You's trick led to the cancellation of her engagement with Xu Feng, refused to eat or drink. Duke Nanping, her father, was deeply concerned.
He tried to console her, even offering to have Puchi "cut off piece by piece or torn into pieces by horses," but Sui He dismissed it, saying they couldn't catch him. She then suggested that Xu Feng (King Yi) might have bought Puchi off to stage the whole drama. Duke Nanping tried to tell her that the matter was settled and wondered what he could do to make her happy, but Sui He threatened to take her own life.
Panicked, Duke Nanping promised to find a solution and urged her to eat. He then resolved that he would not allow Sui He to remain so obsessed with King Yi. He vowed revenge on Xu Feng, saying, "You are not kind to me, so don't blame me for being unjust. You hurt Sui He’s feelings so much. How can I spare you?"
He immediately dispatched a letter to Liangguo, instructing them to target Xu Feng during his upcoming military campaign, ensuring his death on the battlefield. Xu Feng, as the King, went to visit Jin Mi, but Qiang Huo blocked his way, claiming Jin Mi was resting and had been very tired lately. Xu Feng sensed Jin Mi was avoiding him and later asked his attendant, Qin Tong, if he had done anything wrong.
Qin Tong suggested that Xu Feng's "truthful words under the influence of alcohol" a few days prior, intended to express affection, had backfired and instead appeared as a "loss of composure." Xu Feng then inquired about how to cheer up a beloved. Qin Tong advised buying "fresh stuff" for mild displeasure and "more expensive stuff" for severe unhappiness.
Xu Feng, implying Jin Mi was not an ordinary girl easily pleased, dismissed the attendant, but not before asking him to procure the freshest and most expensive trinkets available. Meanwhile, Run Yu arrived in the mortal realm. He noticed Jin Mi’s courtyard filled with phoenix lanterns, made by Xu Feng.
Yan You appeared, and Run Yu immediately confronted him, demanding to know why he tried to steal the Spirit-Vanishing Arrow and his true involvement in Xu Feng's attack, suggesting that Rat Fairy's confession was merely a cover-up. Yan You, overwhelmed by the questions, offered to take Run Yu to a specific location where he would find all the answers, reassuring him that he wouldn't harm him. Yan You led Run Yu to Dongting Lake.
He asked if Run Yu remembered the place, noting that the answers he sought were beneath its waters. Run Yu admitted a sense of familiarity but also an unexplained fear, wondering why he felt so flustered. Yan You said he wouldn't force him but emphasized the urgency of uncovering the mystery. Later, Run Yu returned to the lake with Kuang Lu. He asked her about her childhood memories, especially sad ones.
Kuang Lu optimistically stated she remembered nothing sad, advising him to focus on happiness and calmly face setbacks. Run Yu then invited her to accompany him into the Dongting Lake. Kuang Lu pledged her unwavering loyalty. As they entered, Kuang Lu marveled at the beautiful place. Run Yu explained he came to confront his past.
As he delved deeper, vivid memories resurfaced: childhood bullies calling him a "monster with horns" and telling him to leave Lize Pond because he wasn't a red carp. Then, horrifying images of his mother forcibly cutting off his scales and horns flashed before him, despite his pleas. He realized that Yunmeng Lake and Lize Pond were one and the same. Overwhelmed, Run Yu collapsed, his hands trembling violently.
Kuang Lu rushed to his side, concerned, but he assured her he was fine. Yan You welcomed Run Yu into Yunmeng Lake. Inside, he announced Run Yu’s arrival to his foster mother, Su Li. Su Li tried to avoid Run Yu, claiming she was isolated and knew little. However, Run Yu walked directly to her, bowing respectfully as if to the Lord of Dongting.
He presented a mermaid painting from the Heavenly Emperor's Xingjing Court, asking if she recognized the fairy in it. Su Li denied any knowledge. Run Yu then meticulously deciphered the painting for her: the string of Magic Fireballs on the woman's wrist, a rare Heavenly treasure, with the other belonging to the Heavenly Empress, indicated a profound connection to the Heavenly Emperor. He uncovered a hidden poem that ended with "Su Li," a pledge of eternal love.
He identified the signature "Lord Beichen" as the Heavenly Emperor's personal nickname, used only for his closest confidantes and known by very few. Run Yu also recalled the queer reactions of the Heavenly Emperor and Empress when Rat Fairy mentioned Su Li during his trial, concluding the relationship between Fairy Su Li and the Heavenly Emperor was "very evident."
He noted that he, who could remember all anecdotes from the Six Realms, had no memory of the name Su Li or his own early childhood, suggesting someone had deliberately erased his memories. Su Li, impressed by his deductions, complimented his extraordinary intelligence. Run Yu pressed for the truth. He pointed out that while the Heavenly Emperor practiced fire magic, he, as a dragon, practiced water magic, implying his birth mother was from the Water Family.
The painting depicted Su Li treading water and catching fish, further suggesting her aquatic origin. He then revealed that the "shark beads" mentioned in the poem, formed from mermaid tears, were identical to a string he had carried since childhood. Su Li once again deflected, insisting that Su Li was long dead and urging him to stop dwelling on a deceased person.
Run Yu countered that Rat Fairy's death, while seeming like revenge, was too ill-conceived to truly shake the Bird Family, concluding it was a "golden cicada shedding its shell" scheme by the Heavenly Empress to sacrifice Rat Fairy. He argued that the only logical explanation was that Su Li was not dead but alive, secretly accumulating power and orchestrating repeated attacks against the Heavenly Realm. Su Li finally acknowledged him, lamenting, "My son has finally grown up. . .
I know that you are really very smart." Run Yu, still seeking confirmation, reiterated that the Heavenly Empress was not his birth mother, but merely sought to control him as the eldest son. He confessed his constant yearning for his biological mother throughout the millennia. Su Li, hardening her resolve, simply told him to leave, insisting that his mother had "died in the fire that happened in Lize Pond that year."
Run Yu, realizing her continued refusal to acknowledge him, expressed his profound disappointment. He had believed his mother loved him and their separation was forced by circumstances, but her present actions proved otherwise. He demanded to know why she had insisted on giving birth to him if he was such a disgrace, and why, if she truly loved the Heavenly Emperor, she would then torture and abandon him.
He revealed a scar caused by her Magic Fireball and another, a lifelong wound, from when she had cut off his dragon scales, a forbidden act for any other. He questioned what kind of hatred could drive a mother to inflict such harm on her own child. Su Li begged him to stop, repeatedly ordering him to leave. In despair, Run Yu declared, "The one who gave birth to me, destroyed me and abandoned me is my mother.
I'm hurt both physically and mentally. I’m scarred. It’s because of you." He then kowtowed once more, stating he was repaying her for giving birth to him, thereby severing their mother-son bond. Su Li cried out that she was not his mother, and he was not her son, desperately urging him to leave. As Run Yu walked out of Dongting Lake, his tears fell on Kuang Lu's face, who followed him silently. He couldn’t comprehend his mother’s actions. Inside, after Run Yu left, Su Li began to mournfully call out his childhood name, "Li," repeatedly, her cries echoing through the lake dwelling, greatly paining Yan You.
