After rescuing Zhang Chengling, Jing Beiyuan returned him to Shen Shen and Gao Xiaolian, assigning his disciple Aqinlai to attend to Zhang Chengling. Upon learning that Wen Kexing was the Chief of Ghost Valley, Zhang Chengling wept bitterly, then immersed himself in training day and night, vowing revenge. Gao Xiaolian tried her best to dissuade him, but to no avail. In a fit of anger, Zhang Chengling even drove Aqinlai away.
As Zhou Zishu gradually recovered, he hosted a banquet to thank Da Wu, Jing Beiyuan, Gu Xiang, and Cao Weining. They drank merrily together. Aqinlai rushed back to report to Jing Beiyuan. When Zhou Zishu learned that Zhang Chengling intended to seek revenge on Wen Kexing, he decided to go to Ghost Valley himself to resolve the misunderstanding between them. Before leaving, Da Wu gave Zhou Zishu some medicine.
Zhou Zishu hurried to the foot of Qingya Mountain and overheard that Zhao Jing had rallied all sects to eradicate Ghost Valley and that the Chief was surrounded. Anxious, he rushed ahead. Wen Kexing was already encircled by Zhao Jing and others. Shen Shen and Zhang Chengling soon arrived. Severely wounded and cornered, Wen Kexing threatened them with the armory key. Wen Kexing said he would rather die at Zhang Chengling’s hands and promised not to resist.
Zhang Chengling wanted to kill Wen Kexing to avenge his mentors. Shen Shen, suspecting a trap, desperately tried to stop him. Suddenly, Zhou Zishu descended from above, shielding Wen Kexing and forbidding anyone from hurting him. Zhao Jing warned Zhou Zishu not to aid the wicked, but Zhou Zishu retorted sharply. Ye Baiyi suddenly appeared, drawing his sword to attack Wen Kexing. Zhou Zishu tried to help but was held back by the Changing Ghost and the Lustful Ghost.
Zhang Chengling leapt down and hit Wen Kexing with a concealed weapon. Wen Kexing stumbled and fell off a cliff. Zhou Zishu leaped after him, but it was too late. Seeing Wen Kexing fall to his death, Zhao Jing laughed triumphantly. The Scorpion King urged the others to search Wen Kexing’s body for the armory key.
Zhou Zishu woke up groggily at the Ping’an Inn, only to hear that Wen Kexing had died from the fall and that his body had been recovered intact. Overwhelmed by grief, he coughed up blood. Zhao Jing held a banquet to celebrate and thanked Ye Baiyi for his help. Ye Baiyi credited the Scorpion King as the main contributor, saying he lured Wen Kexing out of Qingya Mountain, and then left without even drinking.
Zhao Jing proudly introduced the Scorpion King as his son. Disgusted, Fan Huaikong walked out. Gu Xiang and Cao Weining came to inquire about Wen Kexing’s whereabouts and ran into Fan Huaikong. Fan Huaikong demanded that Cao Weining leave Gu Xiang, but he firmly refused. Zhou Zishu arrived at the Five Lakes Alliance and found Liu Qianqiao burning paper offerings for Wen Kexing. Forcing open the gate, he saw Wen Kexing lying on a cold wooden plank.
As the disciples of the Five Lakes Alliance gathered, Zhou Zishu didn’t want to fight and didn’t want Wen Kexing’s integrity defiled. He kicked a burning log toward Wen Kexing’s body, igniting a raging fire, then left in agony. Gu Xiang and Cao Weining caught up to him and learned he hadn’t saved Wen Kexing. Gu Xiang fainted from heartbreak. Zhou Zishu told Cao Weining to take Gu Xiang and return to Nanjing with Jing Beiyuan.
Grief-stricken over the loss of his soulmate Wen Kexing, Zhou Zishu drowned his sorrows in wine at the place where Wen Kexing had fallen. Memories of their shared struggles flooded back. Risking his life, Zhou Zishu forcibly removed all seven Nails of Seven Torments from his body, determined to carry on Wen Kexing’s unfinished mission.
Zhao Jing publicly announced the reopening of the Heroes’ Conference the next day, calling on all sects to wipe out Ghost Valley and exterminate its three thousand devils. He proposed to elect a new leader of the martial world. He solemnly offered a toast to the dead. Shen Shen, the Scorpion King, and Zhang Chengling each toasted Zhao Jing, congratulating him on his imminent success. Everyone endorsed Zhao Jing as the new leader, and he was overjoyed.
Ye Baiyi drank alone, cursing his deceased disciple Rong Xuan for not only getting himself killed but also causing many innocent deaths. Thinking of Wen Kexing’s tragic end left Ye Baiyi deeply troubled. The Scorpion King sent someone disguised as Duan Pengju to confront Zhao Jing, condemning him for associating with evil and publicly severing ties.
