Three years prior, on the day of his wedding to Shangguan Xi, Xie Xiao fled, leaving Shangguan Xi weeping until dawn. Encountering him again after three years, she struggled with her deep feelings. Xie Xiao, however, remained oblivious to her true emotions, believing she only agreed to the marriage because their fathers forced her and he could not ruin her life.

Shangguan Xi implored him to return home, suggesting his father might have ideas on how to save Sha Xiuzhu, who was now imprisoned. Xie Xiao finally relented, accepting whatever punishment awaited him. Shangguan Xi then drew water, shaved his beard, and provided him with new clothes, transforming his appearance before he faced his father. Meanwhile, General Guan arrived in Yangzhou for his father's birthday and demanded the return of his stolen birthday gifts from Lu Yi.

Lu Yi refused, citing that the case remained unsolved and two trunks of gifts were still missing, which meant the evidence could not be returned. General Guan invoked his imperial status, but Lu Yi calmly asserted that the Embroidered Uniform Guards only took His Majesty's command and acted according to rules. He invited General Guan to directly submit a memorial to the Emperor if he had any complaints, causing General Guan to storm off in frustration.

Upon his return, Xie Xiao was immediately met with a slap from his father, Master Xie, who berated him for clashing with the Embroidered Uniform Guard and Lu Yi. Master Xie intended to send Xie Xiao to Suzhou that very night to lie low. However, Xie Xiao insisted he could not abandon Sha Xiuzhu, stating they had jointly planned the theft of the birthday gifts.

Despite his father's warnings about the Provincial Surveillance Commission's heavily guarded jail, Xie Xiao remained resolute in his intent to rescue Sha Xiuzhu. Master Xie, noting Lu Yi's unpredictable nature, ordered Shangguan Xi to keep a close watch on Xie Xiao and prevent him from causing more trouble. After his father left, Xie Xiao revealed to Shangguan Xi that he still possessed two trunks of the birthday gifts and needed to quickly hide them.

Shangguan Xi subtly suggested his father might be ill, but Xie Xiao dismissed it, convinced his father was healthy after the strength of his slap. Yuan Jinxia, eager to explore Yangzhou, convinced Yang Yue to extend their outing. As they discussed going to Seven Pavilion, Xie Xiao, who happened to be nearby, overheard and formulated a plan. He paid the Seven Pavilion owner to stage a scene.

When Yuan Jinxia and Yang Yue arrived, the owner loudly accused Xie Xiao of eating without paying for over a month. Xie Xiao then revealed his identity as the Young Master of the Wu'an Sect and asked Yuan Jinxia to judge the dispute. Before she could properly respond, an accomplice of Xie Xiao splashed water all over Yuan Jinxia, drenching her.

Feigning concern, Xie Xiao insisted on taking Yuan Jinxia to a costume store to buy new clothes, despite her initial protests. Yang Yue, needing to deliver snacks to his father, reluctantly left them. At the costume store, Yuan Jinxia unsuspectingly changed her clothes and left her badge, an important symbol of her authority, with her old attire. Xie Xiao seized this opportunity, replacing her real badge with a fake one he had prepared.

Using this fake badge, Xie Xiao brazenly entered the jail, claiming to be an envoy sent by Lu Yi to interrogate and take Sha Xiuzhu away. However, his unfamiliarity with official protocols, specifically being unaware of the distinction between the "South Bureau" and "North Bureau," exposed his deception. The vigilant jailer immediately recognized the ruse and locked Xie Xiao in a cell. To rescue Xie Xiao, Shangguan Xi detonated a thunderball, blowing up the stable to create a chaotic diversion.

She successfully freed Xie Xiao from his cell, but despite his pleas, she insisted they leave without Sha Xiuzhu. Hearing the loud explosion and seeing the firelight, Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia rushed to the scene. Yuan Jinxia tried to assert her authority by displaying her badge to the guards, but they mistook her for Xie Xiao's accomplice due to the identical fake badge.

Overwhelmed, Yuan Jinxia struggled to explain herself, but Lu Yi vouched for her, confirming she was a constable from Department Six, though he also subtly distanced himself from her. Lu Yi then sternly demanded an explanation from Yuan Jinxia regarding the day's events. He immediately recognized her badge was a fake, a fact confirmed by Yang Chengwan who examined it and noted the absence of meteorite iron, a key feature of genuine Department Six badges.

Yuan Jinxia was shocked, unable to comprehend how her badge had been swapped. Lu Yi pressed Yuan Jinxia, suspecting her of being an "inside agent" given the ease with which her crucial badge was supposedly exchanged. Distressed and feeling wrongly accused, Yuan Jinxia lashed out in anger, defiantly admitting to knowing the bandits, providing them the badge, and orchestrating the jailbreak plan.

Enraged by her outburst, Yang Chengwan slapped her across the face, quickly apologizing to Lu Yi for his disciple's words of frustration. Lu Yi, unwavering, declared that he had no need for someone like her and ordered her to pack her belongings and leave Yangzhou the following day. Yuan Jinxia, furious, threw her badge down and ran off, proclaiming she would not be a constable. Yang Yue quickly followed to console her.

Lu Yi then explained to Yang Chengwan that he knew Yuan Jinxia was not actually involved with the bandits, but believed a "good blade must be sharpened" to maintain its edge. Yang Yue urged Yuan Jinxia to calmly recall when and by whom her badge might have been exchanged. Suddenly, Yuan Jinxia remembered the moment at the costume store and realized Xie Xiao was the culprit.

Grabbing the clothes he had given her, she stormed to the Wu'an Sect, demanding Xie Xiao be handed over to the authorities. Shangguan Xi refused to comply, and Xie Xiao, confident in his defense, denied any wrongdoing. Yuan Jinxia, in a fit of rage, aimed her firearm at his head, but ultimately hesitated to pull the trigger. Meanwhile, Lu Yi discovered one of Shangguan Xi's unique beads near the jail's back wall, immediately understanding the Wu'an Sect's involvement.

At that moment, Master Xie and Yang Chengwan arrived. It became apparent that the two were old friends. Confronted by his father, Xie Xiao was forced to confess his actions, earning him another angry slap from Master Xie. Yang Chengwan intervened, suggesting that the Wu'an Sect should lie low for a while since Lu Yi had not yet fully implicated them. Master Xie reluctantly agreed.

Yang Chengwan then introduced Yang Yue and Yuan Jinxia to Master Xie, an introduction that unexpectedly revealed a shared past. Master Xie recounted how, years ago, he brought a young, burly Xie Xiao to the capital, and how Yuan Jinxia had bitten him during their very first meeting, after which she frequently led him into mischief. Yuan Jinxia and Xie Xiao were surprised to discover they were childhood playmates, exchanging nicknames "Fatty Xie" and "Prawn Yuan."

Despite the nostalgic reunion, Yuan Jinxia remained steadfast, declaring she would only forgive Xie Xiao once she was reinstated as a constable. Seeing her determination, Xie Xiao proposed a plan that he claimed would surely lead to her reinstatement. Following Xie Xiao's advice, Yuan Jinxia arrived at Lu Yi's door late that night, carrying her packed belongings with her face deliberately pale and eyes red, feigning tears.

She dramatically announced her departure for the capital the next morning, hoping to elicit a compassionate response. Lu Yi, however, remained silent throughout her performance. As Yuan Jinxia slowly walked towards the door, he finally uttered, "Wait a minute." Yuan Jinxia feigned modesty, claiming she did not deserve to be kept, but her hopes were dashed when Lu Yi simply stated she could "leave tomorrow" and promptly pushed her out of his room.

Back in her own room, a furious Yuan Jinxia almost tore the place apart. After chastising and sending Yang Yue away for trying to console her, she turned to find Xie Xiao entering through her window. Hearing that his plan had failed to sway Lu Yi, Xie Xiao offered to treat Yuan Jinxia to the best night snacks in Yangzhou as an apology.

While indulging in the feast, Yuan Jinxia questioned Xie Xiao's motives, asking why he would risk his life to save Sha Xiuzhu when his own father was reportedly ill. Xie Xiao, believing his father to be healthy, denied the illness. However, Yuan Jinxia, through keen observation, detailed Master Xie's subtle signs of distress, including deep wrinkles, short breath, powerless actions, and a hoarse voice, concluding these indicated heart and lung problems.

Xie Xiao, taken aback by her accurate assessment, sighed and explained that Sha Xiuzhu had taken good care of him for three years. Together they robbed the rich and gave to the poor, never doing anything with a guilty conscience. He revealed that he had insisted on robbing the birthday gifts because he detested the Guan family's arrogance, and therefore, he could not abandon Sha Xiuzhu in jail.
