Following Lu Yi’s failure to convince him to escape, Lan Qingxuan gives him a letter written in his own blood, explaining it is the last thing he can do to help him. Shortly after, Yan Shifan, though dismissed from office, arrives at the prison, having heard of a plot to substitute a prisoner. Lu Yi conceals the letter as Yan Shifan arrogantly confronts them. Lan Qingxuan curses Yan Shifan, predicting his downfall.
When Yan Shifan demands to know who is behind the plot, Lan Qingxuan defiantly claims his only master is "God Wuliang." Enraged, Yan Shifan draws his sword and holds it to Lan Qingxuan's neck. As Yan Shifan threatens him, Lan Qingxuan seizes the blade and slits his own throat, shocking everyone present. Yan Shifan immediately distances himself, proclaiming his innocence and claiming it was a suicide.
With his final breaths, Lan Qingxuan tells a distraught Lu Yi that this is a good end for a Taoist and urges him to "sacrifice a rook to save the king." He expresses his regret at not being able to see Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia marry, imploring Lu Yi to cherish her and not miss the chance again. After asking to be sworn brothers in their next life, Lan Qingxuan dies, leaving Lu Yi overwhelmed with grief.
Meanwhile, Yuan Jinxia and Xie Xiao successfully apprehend the eunuch bribed by Yan Shifan, who confesses to framing Lan Qingxuan. Jinxia rushes to inform Lu Yi, only to be met with the devastating news of Lan Qingxuan's suicide. Stunned, she blames herself for not finding the eunuch sooner. When the Emperor learns of the death, he is furious. Lu Yi presents the eunuch’s confession and reports how Lan Qingxuan used Yan Shifan's own knife to kill himself.
Enraged by Yan Shifan's audacity, the Emperor orders Lu Yi and the Three Judicial Offices to investigate, places Yan Shifan under house arrest, confiscates his family's property, and dismisses Yan Song from his post, sending him back to his hometown. Unwilling to accept defeat, Yan Shifan vows to use Lan Qingxuan's death to accuse Lu Yi of colluding with the priest.
Before leaving the capital, Yan Song subtly informs the Emperor that Lu Yi and Lan Qingxuan were close friends and that Yan Shifan had rushed to the prison because he heard someone was attempting a prisoner swap. The Emperor, swayed, decides to secretly investigate Lingji Palace himself, advised by Li Gonggong that a direct summons might alert Lu Yi.
As their friends and family gather to celebrate the Yan family's downfall, Xie Xiao and Shangguan Xi express concern that the cunning Yan Shifan might still find a way to escape punishment. Meanwhile, Yan Shifan is shocked to learn Lu Yi has avoided punishment. A eunuch reports that the Emperor went to Lingji Palace but found Lu Yi refining elixirs using a formula from Lan Qingxuan’s blood letter, which appeased his anger.
Frustrated, Yan Shifan devises a new plot against Lu Yi. Later, Jinxia spots a man she recognizes as the pirate Pockmark Wang on the street. Though he claims to be a man named Luo Wenlong, she and Xie Xiao subdue him and deliver him to Lu Yi. Lu Yi interrogates Luo Wenlong, who is indeed Pockmark Wang. Under duress, Luo Wenlong confesses that letters proving Yan Shifan’s collusion with the pirate Mao Haifeng are hidden in his room.
Cen Fu retrieves the letters, but Lu Yi is suspicious, finding it too convenient. He has the paper analyzed by an expert, who confirms the letters are forgeries made with newly produced pulp. Just as the group realizes they nearly fell for Yan Shifan's trap, Zhai Lanye, who vanished after the battle at Cen Harbor, reappears. She reveals she is seeking revenge on Yan Shifan, who had "gifted" her to Mao Haifeng as punishment.
As a peace offering, she has brought them the captured Mao Haifeng himself. Though Zhai Lanye’s story is compelling, Lu Yi finds the timing of Mao Haifeng's arrival immediately after Luo Wenlong’s fake confession too coincidental to act on rashly. He decides to interrogate Mao Haifeng, provoking him with insults and showing him the forged letters in an attempt to glean genuine evidence.
Learning that Zhai Lanye has delivered Mao Haifeng to his enemies, a furious Yan Shifan orders his men to find her and discover what Lu Yi is planning. Elsewhere, Lu Yi meets with Xu Jing to finalize their strategy. While Xu Jing suggests charging Yan Shifan with treason for colluding with Japanese invaders, Lu Yi reveals his trump card: a document his father left him.
The document is irrefutable proof that Yan Shifan illegally built his residences on land with auspicious feng shui, a grave offense. Lu Yi asserts that adding this crime to the others will ensure Yan Shifan's execution, leaving no chance for survival. Back at his manor, Yan Shifan rages at his subordinates, frustrated by their inability to find Zhai Lanye or gain any intelligence on Lu Yi's plans.
