Following their escape from an ambush and the strange disappearance of a disciple's body, the investigation at Danqing Taoist Temple begins. The temple, once a bustling and graceful place jammed with people every day, had become completely deserted. Lan Qingxuan recounted to Lu Yi how his junior brother, Fatso, had constantly complained of headaches and weakness, which Lan Qingxuan, believing him to be lazy, had dismissed. He worriedly admitted he had felt sleepy and weak recently himself.

Fatso's closest friend, Slim-jim, was still in shock and barely conscious from the incident. Master Yuanming, who was caring for Slim-jim, reassured Lan Qingxuan, while Lu Yi promised he would do his best to uncover the truth. Lu Yi asked Yuan Jinxia to accompany him to check on Slim-jim. Xie Xiao attempted to join them, but Lan Qingxuan firmly held him back, accusing him of always causing trouble.

When they observed Slim-jim, Yuan Jinxia and Lu Yi noticed a distinct fear in his eyes towards Master Yuanming, which was not the respect due a master. This raised their suspicions that Slim-jim might know something, but with Master Yuanming constantly by his side, they decided to wait, not wanting to alert anyone. Later that night, Lu Yi visited Master Yuanming and effortlessly resolved a complex chess game that Yuanming had long deemed unsolvable, earning the master's profound admiration.

Lu Yi remarked on Yuanming's unusual calm despite the crisis. Yuanming, unperturbed, stated that if the temple were to perish, it would simply be the will of the heavens, as he had long accepted life's vicissitudes. He revealed his hope for the temple's restoration lay with Lan Qingxuan. Yuanming confided that Lan Qingxuan, once a dissolute scion of a wealthy family, had squandered his inheritance after his father's death, facing banishment and homelessness.

Yuanming had taken him in during his lowest point, but Lan Qingxuan remained unable to let go of past regrets and lived with deep inner scars. As Lu Yi returned, Lan Qingxuan was waiting, offering him a grilled wild chicken he had prepared. He inquired if the Embroidered Uniform Guards suspected Master Yuanming in the imperial elixir case, asserting his unwavering belief in his master, who was like a second parent to him.

Lu Yi pointed out that the chicken constituted a bribe. Unexpectedly, Lan Qingxuan then advised Lu Yi to be wary of Xie Xiao's gaze on Yuan Jinxia, suggesting Lu Yi watch his "Miss Yuan" lest she be "stolen away," clearly implying Lu Yi's own affection. Lu Yi dismissed the concern, stating Yuan Jinxia had no one in mind. Lan Qingxuan explained he only gave such advice because he regretted missing his own chances in the past.

Understanding Lan Qingxuan's deep-seated regrets, Lu Yi subtly comforted him. Meanwhile, in Yangzhou, Xie Xiao sought assistance from Beggar Uncle and Doctor Lin. Lin Ling initially refused involvement in official affairs but was persuaded by Xie Xiao and Beggar Uncle, especially given her fondness for Yuan Jinxia. After securing their help, Xie Xiao briefly returned to his sect.

Elsewhere, Shangguan Xi, having heard Xie Xiao would be back soon, asked Yang Yue to teach her how to cook a spicy Chengdu dish, his favorite. As Yang Yue helped Shangguan Xi tie her apron, Xie Xiao burst in, misinterpreted their closeness, and quickly exited. Shangguan Xi frantically chased after him to clarify, but Xie Xiao, convinced they were in love, teased that he would tell his father. Exasperated, Shangguan Xi finally vented her frustration.

Lu Yi subtly tested Slim-jim and concluded that the disciple possessed no martial arts skills. Later, Yang Yue found Shangguan Xi withdrawn and pensive. He gently encouraged her to live more happily. Yang Yue contrasted her with Yuan Jinxia, noting how Jinxia's cheerful nature made her effective and admired. Shangguan Xi felt they were fundamentally different, as Jinxia was free while she was burdened by her sect's responsibilities.

Yang Yue then suggested she find someone else to lean on, not necessarily Xie Xiao. However, Shangguan Xi firmly asserted her destiny was to marry Xie Xiao and manage the Wu'an Sect. Hearing this, Yang Yue departed with a look of profound disappointment. Xie Xiao, Beggar Uncle, and Doctor Lin arrived at Danqing Temple. Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia had theorized that Fatso's disappearance might be linked to the problematic imperial elixir and decided to review the temple's chronicles.

As Yuan Jinxia diligently served Lu Yi tea and fruit, Xie Xiao's jealousy flared. When Yuan Jinxia ignored him, Lu Yi calmly ended his complaints by stuffing an orange into his mouth. Xie Xiao angrily confronted Yuan Jinxia, demanding to know if she had fallen for Lu Yi. She scoffed, stating Lu Yi was her superior and her feelings were none of Xie Xiao's concern.

Irritated, Yuan Jinxia declared her choices were her own and pointedly reminded Xie Xiao that his true concern should be Shangguan Xi, whom he had abandoned and left to endure gossip. Yuan Jinxia walked away, leaving Xie Xiao to finally reflect on his actions. Soon after, Shangguan Xi received a letter from Xie Xiao, which she eagerly opened, only to find it was a formal letter canceling their engagement. Heartbroken, she lamented how swiftly this day had arrived.

That night, Shangguan Xi retrieved the jar of "Daughter Red" wine, which was to be for her wedding. Questioning its purpose now that her marriage to Xie Xiao was impossible, she expressed her deep, unyielding attachment to him, admitting that despite her public image as a capable sect leader, she had only ever desired a simple life with him. Yang Yue, deeply saddened by her pain, offered to drink the entire jar of wine with her.

Back at Danqing Temple, as Lu Yi and Lan Qingxuan played chess, a sudden scream from young Xin startled everyone. They rushed to Xin's room, only to discover him lifeless. Lan Qingxuan collapsed in despair, unable to comprehend such a cruel act against a child.
