Yan Shifan, having already shown interest in Yuan Jinxia, boldly claimed the silver Lu Yi had found, stating it belonged to the Ministry of Works and he would take it. He then declared his admiration for Yuan Jinxia, expressing a desire to keep her as his personal guard. However, seeing Lu Yi's agreeable demeanor, Yan Shifan decided against it, remarking that he wouldn't take such a lovely person away from him.

On the pretext of treating Jinxia's supposed "wounds" and conversing with Lu Yi, he invited them both aboard his painted pleasure boat. Once on the boat, Yuan Jinxia changed into fresh attire. Yan Shifan remarked to Lu Yi that she looked "really pretty" with her makeup. Lu Yi, sensing Yan Shifan's intentions, tried to send Jinxia away, explaining she was merely an inexperienced constable. Yan Shifan refused and challenged Jinxia to deduce something from his outfit.

When she hesitated to treat him like a suspect, he directed her to examine a female attendant instead. After a careful look, Jinxia deduced that the woman was a tea-maker who had recently been punished for a mistake, and that her right hand was likely injured. She elaborated on her reasoning, explaining how calluses, a faint scald mark with a tea aroma, and the tidiness of her hair revealed these details.

Yan Shifan was impressed, and Lu Yi dryly commented that having her around could be "annoying." Yan Shifan then ordered wine, and despite Jinxia's claim that she wasn't a good drinker, he insisted. She discreetly poured her wine away when he wasn't looking. Yan Shifan then pressed Yuan Jinxia, asking why she had lied by omitting the detail about the attendant's injured right hand. He then spoke suggestively of "bedroom pleasure," implying Yuan Jinxia was "ready to try it."

When she tried to excuse herself, Yan Shifan ordered his men to take her to a guest room, insisting she and Lu Yi would stay the night. Lu Yi advised Jinxia to comply. After she was escorted away, Yan Shifan commented to Lu Yi that a girl who was "immature and lack of sense of romance" was not his type and offered Lu Yi his pick of any woman on the boat.

Lu Yi politely declined, citing his father Lu Ting's strictness. Amused, Yan Shifan promised Lu Yi that he would still be accompanied by his "favorite girl" that night. Lu Yi was later led to a room where he discovered Yuan Jinxia wrapped in a quilt. She explained she had been forced to shower and tricked into taking a muscle-softening poison. Lu Yi realized she was Yan Shifan's "gift" to him.

Hearing Yan Shifan and Di Lanye listening and peeking through a hole in the door, Lu Yi began to undress. A terrified Jinxia screamed, calling him a "hypocrite" and "womanizer." Lu Yi leaned close, whispering for her to "keep going" because "they're watching." She continued her cries for help, calling him a "bastard" and "animal," until Yan Shifan, commenting that men show their true selves after drinking, finally left. Once they were alone, Lu Yi told her she could stop.

Relieved, Yuan Jinxia complained that Yan Shifan seemed to bully Lu Yi. She recalled how Yan Shifan had taken the konghou at the auction and how she initially thought Lu Yi had been foolish. She now understood that the instrument and the song "Peach Blossom" must hold special significance for him. Touched by her insight, Lu Yi wrote the characters for "fake weakness" on her hand, telling her there were things she didn't need to understand.

Soon after, her stomach grumbled. Lu Yi ordered beef noodles for her. As she was too weak to move, he patiently blew on the hot noodles and fed them to her, insisting it was an order when she protested. Jinxia gratefully remarked that even her mother hadn't fed her since she was a child. Lu Yi reflected that not everything on the boat was disgusting. The next day, Xie Xiao arrived in Yangzhou with a lively procession to propose marriage.

He asked Yuan Jinxia's master, Yang Chengwan, for her hand, but both Yang Chengwan and Yang Yue said they couldn't make the decision. Yang Yue pointed out Xie Xiao's existing engagement to Shangguan Xi, who was standing by silently. Xie Xiao claimed it was forced. As Lu Yi and Jinxia returned, they witnessed Xie Xiao's direct proposal and presentation of a gift list, which Lu Yi promptly took from Jinxia.

When Xie Xiao tried to pull Jinxia away, Lu Yi stopped him, stating she had important duties. Caught between the two men pulling her arms, Jinxia told Xie Xiao she needed time to think it over and sent him away. As Lu Yi walked off, Jinxia hurried after him to apologize for Xie Xiao's behavior.

She expressed confusion over Shangguan Xi's lack of resentment, so Lu Yi revealed that years ago, Xie Xiao had saved Shangguan Xi’s life by fighting off bandits alone, sustaining near-fatal injuries. Understanding Shangguan Xi's loyalty, Jinxia playfully suggested Lu Yi still had a chance with her, earning a sharp look. Later, Yang Yue confronted Xie Xiao at the Wu'an Sect headquarters, accusing him of being a disloyal playboy and vowing to prevent him from marrying Jinxia.

Their argument nearly came to blows before Shangguan Xi intervened and led Xie Xiao away. Meanwhile, Xie Xiao argued with his ailing father about the marriage. His father, worried about his son's impulsiveness and threats from a rival sect, secretly instructed Shangguan Xi to watch over Xie Xiao and the sect's affairs. Back in the courtyard, Yang Yue found Jinxia cooking his favorite dishes. She explained it was a vegetarian meal for Lu Yi.

Yang Yue gave her a letter from her mother, who, to Jinxia's shock, had accepted a marriage proposal from the Yi family on her behalf. Just then, Lu Yi returned. Jinxia warmly invited him to eat, but he looked at the vegetarian spread with disdain. She quickly explained it was a "vegetarian day" to gain merits, to which he wryly asked if she thought he had done too much evil.

She clarified it was a thank-you meal for his help with Xie Xiao. Still displeased, Lu Yi reminded her that she had said she would consider the proposal. Jinxia quickly backtracked, promising to dissuade Xie Xiao and explaining she wouldn't interfere with his and Shangguan Xi's complicated relationship. Seeing Lu Yi's somber expression, Jinxia offered him wine she had found in his room. Lu Yi explained that fruit wine must be served cold in a crystal glass.

When she admitted she had none, he prepared to leave, but she stopped him and rushed off to find one. After she returned with a glass, they finally sat down to eat. Lu Yi pointed out the lard in her "vegetarian" dish, which she sheepishly justified as being tastier. He agreed to "make do." Jinxia then prepared a spring pancake for him.

He found the seaweed in it odd, and she explained it was a southern custom called a "moistened pancake," a style Yang Yue learned because his father, Yang Chengwan, had lived in Fujian for several years as a child. The detail piqued Lu Yi’s interest, making him wonder why Yang Chengwan, a native of Jiangxi, had spent so much time in Fujian.
