During a play rehearsal at the Chunxi Troupe, Yuan Jinxia enthusiastically performed while Lu Yi, her assigned partner, stood by silently. Covering for him, Jinxia improvised her own lines for "The Legend of the White Snake," altering the story so the heroines abandon the "foolish and heartless" Xu Xian. Lu Yi was amused by her changes. Changsheng, another apprentice, warned her not to let the troupe master hear her improvisations.

Jinxia's curiosity was then piqued when she couldn't find the troupe's most famous play, "The Best Perfume," in their repertoire. The mere mention of the play startled Changsheng, and the troupe master appeared, sternly warning Jinxia and Lu Yi to mind their business and not be overly curious. That night, Jinxia saw the master sneak out and followed him to an abandoned property called Lang Garden.

She watched as he set up an altar and mournfully muttered the names "Yun Zheyue" and "Wu Yinhua." When Jinxia accidentally made a noise, a stray cat appeared, distracting the master and allowing her to escape undetected. The next day, she reported her findings to Lu Yi. Yang Yue also brought new information from old case files: the previous troupe master's death was recorded succinctly. He had allegedly hanged himself after leaving a blood-written confession to Yun Zheyue's murder.

Following his death, the current master purchased the nearly-disbanded Chunxi Troupe and its plays, touring for years before recently returning to Yangzhou, just before Zhou Xianyi was murdered. Notably, "The Best Perfume" had not been performed since the new master took over. Finding these circumstances highly suspicious, Lu Yi decided they must investigate Lang Garden, despite Jinxia's reluctance due to its reputation as a haunted place.

Lu Yi insisted, explaining that an autopsy of Yun Zheyue, who was hastily buried there, was crucial to connect his death to Zhou Xianyi's. Inside the dilapidated Lang Garden, eerie wind chimes rattled as they explored. In one room, Lu Yi found a puppet, which triggered Jinxia’s memory of a rumor: Yun Zheyue had been an average performer until "The Best Perfume" was written.

His voice then improved miraculously, which some attributed to him nurturing a "little demon" inside such a puppet. Lu Yi scoffed at the superstition and led them to the old stage, the very place Jinxia dreaded as the scene of the original murder. As the wind chimes rang again, they were suddenly plunged into a vivid hallucination of Yun Zheyue performing "The Best Perfume" on a grand stage before a full audience.

Lu Yi calmly motioned for Jinxia to stay quiet and watch. During the performance, the phantom Yun Zheyue collapsed. Jinxia rushed to help, only to find her hands covered in his blood. The vision shattered instantly, returning them to the derelict stage with Jinxia's hands clean. A terrified Jinxia urged Lu Yi to flee, but as they tried to leave, they found themselves inexplicably trapped in a fierce blizzard. Jinxia cried out, convinced they were seeing ghosts, and nearly fell.

Lu Yi caught her, and when she shyly pulled away, he firmly took her hand, assuring her that ghosts weren't real and that he only believed in himself. Meanwhile, Yang Yue told his father, Yang Chengwan, that his leg was healing well thanks to Lu Yi's help. Yang Chengwan warned his son to remain wary of the Embroidered Uniform Guards, as their kindness always came with a purpose.

Shangguan Xi then visited, bringing soup and inviting Yang Chengwan to recuperate at the Wu'an Sect, an offer he politely deferred. Walking her out, Yang Yue awkwardly confronted Shangguan Xi about the missing 100,000 taels, suggesting that if she took the money, she should return it for the good of Yangzhou's people. Offended, Shangguan Xi staunchly denied any involvement in the theft or Zhou Xianyi's murder, leaving Yang Yue to regret his clumsy accusation.

Back in Lang Garden, Lu Yi and Jinxia found themselves circling back to the same tree. Exhausted and freezing, Jinxia collapsed, hugging Lu Yi's leg for warmth. Believing she was dying, she tearfully gave him final instructions for her mother and confessed her true feelings for him: despite being arrogant and difficult, she felt safe and protected working with him, a feeling she never had at Department Six. As she finished speaking, she fainted.

Lu Yi, remaining calm, finally noticed the faint, persistent ringing of the wind chimes. He covered Jinxia's ears and blocked the sound from his own, instantly breaking the spell. They realized they had been victims of an elaborate hypnosis. Though Jinxia was desperate to leave, Lu Yi insisted on finishing his work. He unearthed Yun Zheyue's shallow grave and found a skeleton with a long needle embedded in its skull—the same murder weapon used on Zhou Xianyi.

As Jinxia looked away and then back, Lu Yi momentarily vanished, replaced by a fleeting shadow that made her scream in terror. He reappeared, holding the wind chimes he had retrieved from the tree, puzzled by her fright. Overcome with relief and emotion, Jinxia instinctively grabbed his sleeve, then pulled back, remembering his dislike of being touched. Recalling her heartfelt confession in the snow, Lu Yi extended his arm, allowing her to hold it as they finally left the garden.

Elsewhere, the Emperor grew impatient over the missing funds, putting Minister Liao in a panic, though Yan Shifan remained confident. In Yangzhou, Lu Yi examined the puppet from Lang Garden and found a hidden note that read, "This is my last time to sing 'The Best Perfume' for you." He deduced that Yun Zheyue used a substitute singer, not black magic, to achieve his famous voice.

With the link between the two murders confirmed, the troupe master became their prime suspect. Jinxia searched the master's room and found a letter addressed to "Miss," but was spotted as she left. Meanwhile, Di Lanye received a letter instructing her to be in Yangzhou in three days. Jinxia showed Lu Yi the letter she found; although the handwriting didn't match the note from the puppet, Lu Yi noted that handwriting could be faked, keeping the master as a suspect.

At the Wu'an Sect, Sha Xiuzhu announced his departure to avoid implicating his friends further, while Xie Xiao declared he would stay to help Shangguan Xi manage the sect. Back at the Chunxi Troupe, the master arranged for everyone to take a hot spring bath. While soaking, Jinxia prayed for success in the case and for finding her birth parents. Her prayers were interrupted by Lu Yi’s voice from the adjacent pool.

He had overheard her and drily advised her to focus on finding the substitute singer rather than praying. Startled, Jinxia asked if he had heard everything. He confirmed he had, then asked, "Are you an orphan?"
