After returning from Biling Lake, Wei Wuxian secretly purchased several jars of Emperor's Smile, which he shared with Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang. He praised the liquor, noting its fragrant and mellow taste. Jiang Cheng remarked that Wei Wuxian described the wine as if it were a person, and Nie Huaisang agreed, comparing fine wine to beautiful women. Wei Wuxian then playfully teased Jiang Cheng about his high standards for a partner. As they were jesting, Lan Wangji entered.

Wei Wuxian, in high spirits, invited him for a drink, but Lan Wangji rigidly refused, citing the Cloud Recesses' ban on alcohol. Undeterred, Wei Wuxian used a charm to make Lan Wangji comply, prompting him to drink the wine. Having never touched alcohol, Lan Wangji became disoriented after one cup, and Wei Wuxian had to guide him to his own bed. Wei Wuxian cheekily instructed the intoxicated Lan Wangji to call him "Brother Wei," which Lan Wangji promptly did.

To Wei Wuxian's surprise, the drunken Lan Wangji was still concerned about his crooked headband. Lan Wangji explained that the headband is sacred, and only parents and a spouse are permitted to touch it. Wei Wuxian found this amusing, mocking the Lan clan's numerous rules and predicting Lan Wangji would remain unmarried forever due to such rigidity. The conversation turned to their family histories.

Wei Wuxian shared that his parents died when he was four, leaving him with only vague memories of being chased by wild dogs and a single, cherished image of his mother riding a donkey while his father walked ahead. Lan Wangji then revealed that he grew up without a mother, a fact that surprised Wei Wuxian. Meanwhile, Lan Xichen reported to Lan Qiren about the events at Biling Lake.

He explained that the water ghouls there had coalesced into an Aqua Demon, an unprecedented occurrence, and relayed Wei Wuxian's theory that it might be connected to the Wen clan's practice of snatching spirits. Lan Qiren, hearing of Wei Wuxian's contribution, acknowledged him as the son of Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren, musing that Wei Wuxian's mischievous nature was just like his mother's.

At that moment, a disciple reported that Wei Wuxian had been caught drinking with several other students, including Lan Wangji. Enraged, Lan Qiren punished Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji with three hundred strikes of the discipline ruler each, and fifty strikes for the others. Wei Wuxian attempted to plead for Lan Wangji, taking full responsibility, but Lan Wangji stoically accepted his punishment. Later, Lan Xichen, observing Wei Wuxian's severe injuries, offered him access to the Cold Spring to heal.

He also revealed that Cangse Sanren had been Lan Qiren's classmate, and her vivacious nature had often exasperated the disciplined Lan Qiren, explaining his current strictness towards Wei Wuxian. Concurrently, Wen Qing reported to Wen Ruohan that "white pupils" had appeared at Biling Lake, confirming the presence of the Aqua Demon. Wen Ruohan replied that the Yin Iron was in the water. Later, Wei Wuxian sought out Lan Wangji at the Cold Spring and found him bathing.

Undeterred by Lan Wangji's cold demeanor, Wei Wuxian jumped into the spring to join him, attempting to befriend him and inviting him to visit Lotus Pier. Suddenly, a strong current pulled both of them into a swirling vortex, dragging them into a hidden cave beneath the spring. At the back of the cave, they found a guqin inscribed with Lan clan forbidden symbols. The instrument, sensing Lan Wangji's lineage, did not harm him but attacked Wei Wuxian whenever he approached.

Wei Wuxian noticed a rabbit wearing a Lan clan headband and deduced the headbands must possess special power. However, before he could act on this, Lan Wangji stopped him from getting too close to the guqin and performed the "Inquiry" technique. Through the music, they heard clamoring voices from the past, seemingly from the five great clans, demanding the "Yin Iron" from "Xue Chonghai." As they pondered this, the spirit of a beautiful woman, Lan Yi, emerged.

Lan Wangji formally greeted Lan Yi. Wei Wuxian, recognizing her as the founder of the Chord Assassination technique and the only female leader in the Gusu Lan clan's history, expressed his shock that she was still present, as she was long believed to have passed away. When they inquired about the Yin Iron, Lan Yi confirmed a fragment was sealed there and recounted its dark history. Centuries ago, the place now known as the Burial Mounds was a celestial mountain.

Xue Chonghai, a powerful grand master of his time, used the Yin Iron to absorb resentment, sacrificing living people to feed its power. He controlled an ancient monster, the Tortoise of Slaughter, and unleashed it upon the cultivation world, causing widespread devastation. The Five Great Clans eventually united to defeat Xue Chonghai and suppress the beast, turning the celestial mountain into a barren wasteland.

Lan Yi further explained that the Yin Iron, having absorbed countless living spirits, became irrevocably tainted with resentment. To prevent its misuse, the Five Great Clans shattered it and sealed the fragments in places with strong spiritual energy, agreeing never to speak of it again. Lan Yi then confessed her own tragic mistake. As a young clan leader eager to innovate, she learned of the Yin Iron from her dearest friend, Baoshan Sanren.

Driven by a desire to purify the fragment sealed in her clan's Cold Pond Cave, she disregarded Baoshan Sanren's grave warnings about its danger. Confident in her abilities, Lan Yi unsealed the fragment, but she was unable to purify it. Instead, the fragment's power backfired, gravely injuring her. To contain it, she was forced to bind it with her own spiritual consciousness, trapping herself in the Cold Pond Cave forever.
