Meng Yao bid farewell to Nie Huaisang, stating he could no longer care for him and urged him to practice more diligently and avoid angering the Clan Leader. As ordered by Nie Mingjue, Meng Yao then left the Unclean Realm. Nie Huaisang confronted his older brother, Nie Mingjue, who sternly told him to sit down, scolding him for his lack of manners.

Jiang Cheng, observing the scene, expressed concern for the injured Meng Yao, but Nie Mingjue curtly dismissed the topic. Wei Wuxian then voiced his worries about the Cloud Recesses and Lan Wangji, fearing they might face danger from the Wen clan. Jiang Cheng confirmed that Wen Xu had gone to the Cloud Recesses for the "indoctrination" and that an envoy was likely also sent to Lotus Pier.

Realizing the potential threat to their home, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng decided to return to Yunmeng immediately. Upon their return to Yunmeng, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng were greeted warmly by local vendors. When Wei Wuxian inquired about any recent odd occurrences, a vendor mentioned an increase in unfamiliar faces, rumored to be cultivators from smaller clans seeking refuge with Clan Leader Jiang. As they approached Lotus Pier, a servant excitedly informed Jiang Yanli of their return.

Aware they had left home without permission, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng knelt before the main hall to await their punishment. Wei Wuxian offered to take all the blame, but Jiang Cheng good-naturedly complained about always getting into trouble because of him. When Jiang Fengmian appeared, he simply inquired if they had encountered any danger on their journey. Jiang Yanli then arrived, overjoyed to see her brothers, and Jiang Fengmian suggested they all proceed to eat.

As they prepared for their meal, Yu Ziyuan, Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli's mother, emerged. At the dinner table, Jiang Fengmian informed them that the Qishan Wen clan had sent envoys, mandating that all prominent clans dispatch their core disciples to Qishan within seven days for personal indoctrination. Thus, Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian were to prepare for their departure. Yu Ziyuan expressed her outrage at the Wen clan's audacious demand.

She cited the Wen clan's letter, which threatened any defiant clan with extermination under the pretext of "treason against the gentry," if they refused to surrender their direct heirs. Yu Ziyuan disdainfully declared that this was merely a ploy to hold their children hostage, clarifying that "direct heirs" meant either Jiang Cheng or Jiang Yanli. Yu Ziyuan’s anger intensified as she turned her attention to Jiang Fengmian, pointedly asking if he intended to send Wei Wuxian.

When Jiang Fengmian replied that it was "up to him," Yu Ziyuan grew furious, sarcastically remarking on Wei Wuxian's freedom to choose, contrasting it with Jiang Cheng's obligation to go. She bitterly accused Jiang Fengmian of being overly kind and "raising a son for others." She then turned on Jiang Cheng, declaring that he would "never compare" to Wei Wuxian.

Lamenting that she was "no match for his mother," she warned Jiang Cheng against associating with Wei Wuxian and expressed her disappointment before leaving the table in a rage. Meanwhile, Lan Wangji was ambushed by Wen Chao and Wen Zhuliu. Wen Chao arrogantly demanded Lan Wangji surrender the Yin Iron, but Lan Wangji managed to repel them using a talisman and escape. Wen Chao did not pursue, confident that his brother, Wen Xu, had already reached the Cloud Recesses.

Indeed, Wen Xu's forces had encircled the Cloud Recesses, setting fires and causing widespread destruction. Lan Xichen reported to a deeply distressed Lan Qiren, warning that Wen Xu's fire talismans contained poison. Coughing blood, Lan Qiren anxiously inquired about Lan Wangji, urging Lan Xichen to ensure he did not return. As the fires spread, Lan Xichen begged Lan Qiren to escape with the ancient texts from the Library Pavilion to preserve the Lan clan's foundation.

Lan Qiren initially hesitated, but eventually ordered all disciples to retreat to the Cold Pond Cave. Back in Yunmeng, Wei Wuxian told Jiang Fengmian he was unable to contact Lan Wangji, expressing his concern over the Wen clan's increasingly tyrannical behavior. Jiang Fengmian revealed he had already received a letter from Clan Leader Lan confirming that the Lan clan had become a major target for the Wen clan due to the Yin Iron.

He instructed Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng to depart for Qishan in three days. They readily agreed, vowing to take care of themselves. Jiang Fengmian reminded them of the wisdom "There are things that shouldn't be done" as a counterbalance to Wei Wuxian's own philosophy of "Attempting the impossible." In the Cloud Recesses, Lan Qiren delayed the retreat to wait for scattered disciples, leading to a confrontation with Wen Xu.

Just as the situation grew dire, Lan Wangji arrived, swiftly repelling the attacking Wen clan disciples and allowing Lan Qiren to lead the others into the Cold Pond Cave. However, Wen Xu captured the disciple Su She. Under duress, Su She revealed the method to enter the cave: only inner disciples wearing their headbands could bypass the protective spell with a specific mudra. Lan Wangji, having overheard the betrayal from inside the cave, emerged.

He offered to go to Qishan if Wen Xu would retreat. Wen Xu accepted but, as a cruel display of dominance, ordered one of Lan Wangji's legs to be broken. As Lan Wangji cried out in pain and collapsed, the Yin Iron fell from his grasp. Meanwhile, in Nightless City, Wen Ruohan executed a subordinate as a chilling warning to Wen Qing.

He confronted her about previously allowing Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji to escape and threatened to turn Wen Ning into a puppet if she ever defied him again. Wen Qing assured him of her unwavering loyalty and then performed acupuncture on him to assist with his trials of the Yin Iron. Soon after, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng arrived at Nightless City with lotus seedpods from Jiang Yanli.

They spotted Nie Huaisang and Jin Zixuan among the assembled cultivators, but Lan Wangji was nowhere to be seen. Moments later, Wen Chao made a grand entrance and had Lan Wangji brought forward. Despite his injuries, Lan Wangji’s expression was serene. Wen Chao then commanded silence and declared the first rule of their indoctrination: no one was permitted to carry weapons, demanding that all present surrender their swords.
