Story of Kunning Palace Episode 3 Recap
> Story of Kunning Palace Recap
Shen Zhiyi asked Jiang Xuening to paint for her. Jiang Xuening didn’t know how to paint and didn’t want to offend the capricious Shen Zhiyi, so she praised her profusely. Unexpectedly, Shen Zhiyi was not satisfied. Jiang Xuening had no choice but to take a risk and painted a flower on Shen Zhiyi’s scar — a trick that had never failed her before.
Shen Zhiyi’s eyes lit up with amazement, especially after Jiang Xuening said the scar was a badge of honor. Shen Zhiyi then revealed a look Jiang Xuening was all too familiar with and complimented her eloquence, even saying she was starting to like her. Jiang Xuening hastily knelt and begged for mercy. Before leaving, Shen Zhiyi said she would come visit her again, leaving Jiang Xuening frustrated — her silver tongue had landed her in trouble again.
Xie Wei had been secretly protecting the Yan family. When a waiter at the inn delivered something, it turned out to be an assassination attempt on Xie Wei. Fortunately, it was a close call without harm. Jiang Xuening happened to come to the same tavern and was taken hostage by the assailant. Xie Wei tested the man through conversation and confirmed he was one of Prince Pingnan’s men.
Jiang Xuening internally bemoaned her bad luck at running into Xie Wei again and again. But to her surprise, Xie Wei chose to save her. Just then, she noticed a guard on the second floor aiming a crossbow and thought Xie Wei was trying to kill two birds with one stone. Bracing herself, she took a bold risk. When Xie Wei shielded her, the guard killed the assailant. Xie Wei ordered that what happened today must not be made public.
Jiang Xuening still looked frightened, so Xie Wei handed her a handkerchief. She instinctively tried to cover herself, revealing a scar on her wrist — a mark from four years ago when they entered the capital together. Jiang Xuening quickly regained her composure and cleverly assured him she hadn’t seen anything. But Xie Wei warned her that if she didn’t like Yan Lin, she shouldn’t lie and hurt him. This provoked Jiang Xuening into revealing her true nature.
Xie Wei smiled and said if she had acted like this earlier, there would’ve been no need for their act. As for the assassin, he didn’t believe she was that foolish. Outside, Yan Lin kept trying to force his way in, so Xie Wei ordered Jiang Xuening to be sent to him. He had no intention of killing her — the silence was meant to scare her into obedience. Yan Lin finally relaxed when he saw Jiang Xuening.
She once again tested the relationship between Xie Wei and Yan Lin, but Yan Lin didn’t seem to know anything, leading her to temporarily conclude that Xie Wei was more of a friend than a foe to Yan Lin — which was a relief. Jiang Xuening then decided to go see the lanterns.
As the lights came on and the streets buzzed with activity, she and Yan Lin joined the crowd to guess riddles, release lanterns, and bought a lot of things. Later, Yan Lin took her to a spot he had carefully chosen, offering a panoramic view of the city. Yan Lin would soon come of age, and Jiang Xuening was stunned at the mention of his coming-of-age ceremony.
Memories of her past life came flooding back — of Yan Lin condemning her as a liar — words that still haunted her. She asked what he liked about her, saying she would grow up and might change for the worse. But Yan Lin believed she was the best as she was.
Unable to let go of her past, Jiang Xuening pushed him away as he leaned in for a kiss and rejected him, saying she only saw him as her best friend. Yan Lin, undeterred, asked again if she would marry him on the day of his coming-of-age. Back home, Tang’er rushed up to Jiang Xuening in fear and told her that her father wanted to see her.
Jiang Boyou had heard that Shen Zhiyi visited the You family and worried Jiang Xuening had learned about the companion reader selection, preparing excuses in advance. But Jiang Xuening simply stated she wasn’t interested in entering the palace. Xie Wei brought the imperial decree from Prince Pingnan to dismantle the capital’s power structure. After encountering Prince Pingnan’s assassin, Xie Wei asked someone to send a letter to Jinling to find out what was going on.
The Xue family was bent on bringing down the Yan family but lacked evidence, so they planned to fabricate some. Jiang Xuening wanted to help the Yan family but had no one to turn to. She thought of Zhou Yinzhi, whom she had used in her past life to secure her position. Surprisingly, he was still the only one she could count on.
Reflecting on her past life, Jiang Xuening suspected the Yan family massacre might be connected to Zhou Yinzhi. The next day, she visited Zhou Yinzhi. Four years ago, he had come to the capital with her and gone from a Jiang family groom to a member of the Xingwu Guard. She warned him to stay out of the Xue and Yan family conflict, or he would die without a grave.
