Ordinary Greatness Episode 29 Recap
> Ordinary Greatness Recap
Li Yisheng's illness led Xu Cuiping to entrust her company to Fang, who managed it so capably that upon returning after Li Yisheng's funeral, Xu Cuiping granted him 30% of the shares and embraced a relaxed retirement filled with square dancing and mahjong. Meanwhile, Li Dawei, concerned about Xia Jie’s mother’s current state, sought his own mother's help to lift her spirits. The following weekend, Li Dawei and Xia Jie planned a trip to a countryside resort with their mothers.
Xu Cuiping teased Li Dawei, suggesting he had feelings for Xia Jie, a notion he vehemently denied, insisting they were merely colleagues. As they drove, their cars met on the road. Xu Cuiping enthusiastically greeted Xia Jie’s mother, who responded with aloofness, much to Xu Cuiping’s chagrin. Annoyed, Xu Cuiping called Xia Jie's mom "that old woman" whom you "can't be nice to" because "if you are nice to them, they flatter themselves."
She angrily told Li Dawei to drive them back home. Xia Jie chastised her mother for her behavior, but her mother justified her actions, calling Xu Cuiping "vulgar." Li Dawei, however, earnestly persuaded his mother to reconsider, highlighting Xia Jie’s "pitiful" situation with such a mother, and how it affected not only Xia Jie's work but also his own as partners.
Xu Cuiping, swayed by his plea, agreed to turn the car around after Li Dawei argued, "Because she's hopeless, we need you to step up." When they returned to the countryside resort, Xu Cuiping made another attempt to engage with Xia Jie’s mother, but Xia Jie’s mother remained distant. Xia Jie and Li Dawei had no choice but to take their mothers home.
Xu Cuiping vowed to completely change Xia Jie's mother and decided she had to devise a plan to "get her mother married soon, so that she won't bother her daughter at home," even mentioning the need for a "KPI" for this project. The next morning, Xu Cuiping went to Xia Jie’s building and repeatedly called for her mother to join a mahjong game.
When Xia Jie’s mother ignored her, Xu Cuiping enlisted the help of neighbors to get her to open the door. Xu Cuiping then physically drew Xia Jie's mother out of her car, linking arms and talking about fate and the connection formed through their children, and insisted on taking her to a park.
Xia Jie's mother initially refused to play mahjong, but Xu Cuiping eventually convinced her to sit down, clarifying to the other players that they "cannot bet money" as they are "mothers of police officers." Later that night, both mothers vented their frustrations to their children. Xu Cuiping complained to Li Dawei about Xia Jie’s mother being "pretentious" and "tacky," and how she had even dared to ask Xu Cuiping to do "bookkeeping for her construction project."
She admitted to merely thinking about slapping her. Meanwhile, Xia Jie’s mother complained to Xia Jie about Xu Cuiping’s "vulgar" behavior, expressing her disdain for Xu Cuiping's pickup truck. Despite their complaints, Li Dawei and Xia Jie believed their mothers were secretly enjoying each other’s company. During lunch, Xia Jie and Li Dawei discussed their ongoing "reformation" efforts regarding Xia Jie's mother.
Their conversation was abruptly cut short when Cheng Hao received an urgent call reporting a violent medical dispute at the Second Hospital. Xia Jie, Li Dawei, and Zhao Jiwei immediately left their meal and rushed to the scene. Learning the incident involved Dr. Zhuo Liming at the Second Hospital, Wang Shouyi, deeply concerned, quickly hailed a taxi and also headed to the hospital. Upon arrival, they found a chaotic scene: a man, covered in blood, was holding a hostage.
The sight of blood triggered a traumatic memory for Xia Jie, reminding her of her father's death, and she swayed, feeling faint. Cheng Hao quickly supported her. Li Dawei attempted to de-escalate the situation, appealing to the man as a father whose child would become an orphan if he continued his actions. The officers worked together and successfully subdued the assailant.
The tragic background of the incident soon emerged: the assailant's wife had died from an amniotic fluid embolism during childbirth in the OB/GYN department. Overwhelmed by grief, he had sought revenge, wielding a knife and threatening a nurse. Dr. Zhuo Liming, passing by and witnessing the crisis, bravely intervened to save the nurse and was tragically stabbed seventeen times. Wang Shouyi, rushing to the hospital, learned of Dr. Zhuo’s severe injuries and hurried to the operating room.
Despite the medical team's desperate efforts with CPR and AED, Dr. Zhuo Liming succumbed to his wounds. Devastated, Wang Shouyi was inconsolable, crying that he "can't" save his friend, whom he respected the most. He was told by a doctor that "Life is unpredictable. When you can do nothing, just let it go." Back at the shared apartment, Xia Jie retreated into her room and locked the door.
Li Dawei and Zhao Jiwei tried to coax her out, but she refused, telling them, "You two are really annoying" and that their "OCD care stresses me a lot." Meanwhile, Xia Jie's mother, unable to reach her daughter, called Ye Wei for an update. Ye Wei then contacted Li Dawei, who confirmed Xia Jie was in her room. Xia Jie finally realized her phone had died and was being charged.
The next morning, Xia Jie's mother appeared at the police station, visibly upset that Xia Jie hadn't answered her calls. Xia Jie explained her phone battery was dead, which only further infuriated her mother, who insisted on speaking directly with Wang Shouyi. However, Wang Shouyi had taken two days of leave due to his grief over Dr. Zhuo Liming's death, leaving a message that he had applied for two days of leave and they should handle matters at their discretion.
Ye Wei, Gao Chao, and Cheng Hao convened to discuss the work arrangements in Wang Shouyi’s absence. Ye Wei decided she would oversee the overall operations, while Cheng Hao would temporarily manage the community work Wang Shouyi typically handled. Xia Jie's mother, refusing to be placated, continued to demand a meeting with Wang Shouyi. Ye Wei, Gao Chao, and Cheng Hao arrived to explain that Wang Shouyi was on leave. They escorted her into an office.
As Xia Jie’s mother stepped into the station, which had been her late husband Xia Junxiong's workplace, she was overcome with emotion and began to cry. In the mediation room, she sharply criticized Wang Shouyi for assigning Xia Jie to dangerous missions, explicitly stating that Xia Jie faints at the sight of blood and should not be put in such perilous situations. She also sternly rebuked Cheng Hao for not protecting Xia Jie adequately.
