Years ago, Marquis Chengyang, Ling Yi, and Huo Chong clashed politically. To eliminate dissent, Ling Yi annihilated the entire Huo family. Huo Junhua, trying to preserve the Huo bloodline, let Huo Wushang survive under Ling Buyi’s identity. Since then, Ling Buyi grew from a Huo orphan into a young general. To uncover the truth, he had planned meticulously and now had a chance to interrogate Prince Yong personally—he would not let it slip by.

Sure enough, confronted with solid evidence, Prince Yong confessed to selling military arms in the besieged city, which led to the Huo family's extermination. Even on the brink of death, Prince Yong remained unrepentant. He believed that in the chaotic past, no one knew who would claim the throne, so he considered retiring from the political scene. He never thought that, had reinforcements arrived earlier, the city wouldn’t have fallen and lives wouldn’t have been lost.

Enraged, Ling Buyi killed him on the spot, caring little for how he would explain it to Emperor Wen. After Prince Yong died, Ling Buyi ordered the Liang brothers to claim that the prince had committed suicide out of guilt. Then he went to the Huo family’s ancestral hall and swore an oath to their spirits. Hearing his words, Huo Junhua recalled the bloody past and became emotional.

Seeing his mother so agitated, Ling Buyi embraced her tightly, vowing he would not let their enemies go unpunished. When Emperor Wen heard that Ling Buyi had acted on his own and killed Prince Yong, he flew into a rage. More than the deception, he worried that others would use this incident to impeach Ling Buyi, causing instability in the court.

Since Ling Buyi remained kneeling without admitting fault, Emperor Wen had nowhere to vent his anger and ultimately demoted him by half a rank and reduced his stipend for six months. A few days later, the Lou family finally responded, sending an invitation to Cheng Shi and Xiao Yuanyi to visit. Though still angry, Xiao Yuanyi, seasoned by life’s storms, knew the Lou family’s intention was to break off the engagement.

Instead of waiting for the Emperor to decide, they chose to act first. So she took Cheng Shaoshang to confront them directly. When the Grand Madam of the Lou family saw Xiao Yuanyi, she dropped all pretenses and sarcastically claimed that Lou Yao and Cheng Shaoshang were simply not fated to be together and they couldn't go against the Emperor’s will.

Xiao Yuanyi rebuked her for targeting Lou Yao—many in the Lou family had benefited from General He’s kindness, not just the second branch, so why should they bear the burden alone? Cheng Shaoshang agreed and pointed out that Grand Tutor Lou, as the eldest son, should take responsibility. If the Lou family wanted to show gratitude, the main branch should lead by example. Faced with the Grand Madam and Lou Li’s vile faces, Xiao Yuanyi slapped her in public.

Lou Li tried to retaliate, but Cheng Shaoshang stepped forward and intimidated her into submission. Since Xiao Yuanyi was a veteran general, the Grand Madam knew she couldn't win and could only respond with harsh words. As Xiao Yuanyi declared a severance of all ties and prepared to leave with Cheng Shaoshang, the entire second branch rushed in. Second Madam Lou suggested that Cheng Shaoshang and He Zhaojun both marry Lou Yao and serve as co-wives.

Seeing such behavior, Xiao Yuanyi left in anger. Cheng Shaoshang asked Lou Yao for his thoughts. Fortunately, after a moment of hesitation, Lou Yao firmly stated that he would never easily break off the engagement. Since the discussion could go no further, Cheng Shaoshang took Yuan Shen’s carriage back home. Along the way, Yuan Shen explained why Lou Yao had no choice but to marry He Zhaojun.

However, Cheng Shaoshang believed that Yuan Shen and He Zhaojun were a better match. Given his upright character, he wouldn’t covet the He family’s wealth, and she could still stay with Lou Yao. Yuan Shen flatly rejected this, saying that helping the He family by contributing so much was a losing deal. Before Cheng Shaoshang could persuade him further, he threw her out of the carriage.

When He Zhaojun arrived in the capital, Cheng Shaoshang waited at the city gate with Lou Yao, intending for him to explain things clearly. But when they saw He Zhaojun in mourning attire, they couldn’t help but feel sympathy. As they hesitated, a pale, thin face peeked out from the carriage—it was He Zhaojun, long unseen, calm and indifferent. Clearly, she had guessed Cheng Shaoshang’s intentions and asked her to follow and help handle an important matter.

Lou Yao immediately became wary, fearing that He Zhaojun would make things difficult for Cheng Shaoshang. But spurred on by her, Cheng Shaoshang mustered the courage and got into the carriage, arriving at the Ministry of Justice. Guards stood respectfully at the gate. Cheng Shaoshang thought they were headed for a cold, damp prison, but instead, they went straight to the execution yard where Prince Xiao knelt on the wooden platform.

Prince Xiao still hoped that He Zhaojun would show mercy for old times’ sake and spare the Xiao family’s last descendant. But He Zhaojun had already petitioned the Emperor to execute the entire clan. Out of respect for Prince Yong’s past service, Emperor Wen allowed them to die with intact corpses. Furious, Prince Xiao cursed He Zhaojun, vowing revenge even in death. But she didn’t care. With a swift strike, she ended his life. Terrified, Cheng Shaoshang turned away just as Ling Buyi appeared and pulled her into his embrace.
