Lost in The Kunlun Mountains Episode 5 Recap
> Lost in The Kunlun Mountains Recap
Ding Yunqi met Chu Fengling at a café. She greeted him, mentioning their brief encounter the day before, and said she had invited him to chat. She had already ordered coffee for him. When he thanked her, he was referring to her saving him the previous night, but she quickly dismissed it, saying it was over and not to mention it again. She inquired if he had studied medicine in England, to which he confirmed.
She then shared that she had studied world history in America but found it to be of no use since returning home. Ding Yunqi mentioned he had just come back. Chu Fengling offered to introduce him to some Western medicine friends, but he politely declined, stating that he wanted to settle his current urgent matters before focusing on work. Chu Fengling understood his predicament. Ding Yunqi was quiet, prompting Chu Fengling to comment on his reticence.
He admitted to having many questions. She then directly asked if he considered them friends now, and he firmly said no. She further probed if even someone who saved him couldn't be a friend, to which he replied it was "complicated" and he couldn't explain. Chu Fengling accepted this, promising to try and understand. She assured him that once he did consider her a friend, she would answer all his questions and return what he desired.
Before leaving, Chu Fengling gave Ding Yunqi her family's phone number. She also invited him to a hospital event scheduled for the day after tomorrow, suggesting he call her if he wished to attend, and even offered dinner at her home that evening. Ding Yunqi, however, declined her offer to try the coffee, stating he only drinks tea, and also refused a ride home. Outside the café, Ding Yunqi encountered Wu Shuang, who was waiting for him.
She was curious where he had been and how he had managed to escape her confinement. She then asked about the "pretty girl" he was with, and Ding Yunqi explained it was Chu Fengling, the one who saved him. As they shared roasted sweet potatoes, Wu Shuang asked about the "phone number" he held, revealing her unfamiliarity with telephones. Ding Yunqi promised to show her one another day.
Seeing students carrying violins, Wu Shuang mistook them for weapons, prompting Ding Yunqi to clarify they were Western musical instruments. He told her she would learn about everything if she stayed in Shanghai for a year. Wu Shuang contrasted this with the life in Mound-digging, where discussions revolved around weapons, martial arts sects, and farming, and her master had many businesses, though she disliked business.
She explained that she and her fellow disciples were all orphans taken in by their master. She recalled her first understanding of "home" was during a childhood visit to his house, even though his mother was already gone then. She remembered it as a "quiet and comfortable" place where she didn't worry about making mistakes and his father was caring.
She had wished to stay there forever, not wanting her master to pick her up, though she clarified that her master was good to her. While Wu Shuang and Ding Yunqi walked through various streets in Shanghai, including Waixiangua Street, Lane Baiye, and Little East Gate, they were being discreetly followed by Wu Shuang's senior, Jiang Xuewen, and his juniors.
After observing them, Jiang Xuewen instructed his juniors to retreat, though he jokingly complained to Wu Shuang about their poor tracking skills, acknowledging she had already spotted them. He then explained that their master had tasked him with making amends and helping them at any critical moment. Wu Shuang, eager to fulfill her duties, asked Jiang Xuewen to inform their master that she would return to Mound-digging and accept her punishment once she recovered the dragon bone.
However, Jiang Xuewen countered that she wouldn't be returning to Mound-digging, asserting that she and Ding Yunqi were engaged and were now expected to "travel the martial artists community together." Ding Yunqi, clearly uncomfortable, attempted to silence Jiang Xuewen. Unfazed, Jiang Xuewen pressed on, questioning what the other juniors would think if Wu Shuang and Ding Yunqi were always together.
Troubled by the mention of the engagement and the escalating situation, Ding Yunqi decided to speak directly with Wu Shuang's master, Zhou Qiuhai, to clarify matters. Ding Yunqi sought out Zhou Qiuhai to discuss Wu Shuang's engagement. Zhou Qiuhai, welcoming him but noting the matter wasn't one for him to personally discuss, quickly pivoted to the status of the dragon bone.
Ding Yunqi clarified that the dragon bone was not yet recovered, and explained that he had been unaware of the tradition of using it as a bride-price, thus deeming the engagement a "misunderstanding" that he wished to clarify. Zhou Qiuhai pressed him, asking if he was engaged abroad, which Ding Yunqi denied. Zhou Qiuhai then extolled Wu Shuang’s virtues—her beauty, character, and martial arts prowess—questioning why she wouldn't be worthy.
Ding Yunqi insisted it wasn't about her worthiness, but about his refusal to become the Heaven Official. This declaration stunned Zhou Qiuhai, who could not comprehend it. Ding Yunqi reiterated his firm stance: he did not want to be the Heaven Official nor join the Penta-sect.
Zhou Qiuhai countered, arguing that given Ding Yuanshan's past actions, he could no longer hold a position in the martial artists community or the Penta-sect, thus placing the responsibility of upholding the Ding family's dignity and the sect on Ding Yunqi. Ding Yunqi defended his father, asserting that based on his character, he was no traitor, and reminded Zhou Qiuhai that his father had even sacrificed his mother for the Penta-sect.
Zhou Qiuhai then demanded an explanation for the Kunlun Mountains incident, stating it was the foundation of the Penta-sect, not the Ding family's property, and Ding Yuanshan had no right to give it away. Ding Yunqi maintained that the truth will only be revealed once his father is found. Zhou Qiuhai emphasized the Penta-sect's thousand-year legacy, insisting it must not be lost in their generation.
Ding Yunqi defiantly declared that it "can" be destroyed by him, as the Penta-sect's "rotten rules" were not worth preserving, and proclaimed his intention to disband the sect, asserting that such a gang had no place in the modern era. Enraged, Zhou Qiuhai offered a compromise: if Ding Yunqi accepted the Heaven Official position, he would personally ensure the recovery of the dragon bone and the finding of Ding Yuanshan.
Furthermore, he promised to spare Ding Yuanshan’s life, confining him to the Mound-digging Region for the rest of his days as punishment, rather than killing him. Ding Yunqi remained resolute, repeating that his father was still alive and the rightful Heaven Official, and he did not want the position himself.
Zhou Qiuhai, giving him a final chance, asked again if he would become Heaven Official, to which Ding Yunqi firmly said no. Zhou Qiuhai then demanded that Ding Yunqi hand over the dragon bone and Dragon Scepter, claiming they belonged to the Penta-sect, not the Ding family. Ding Yunqi refused, stating they were his father's possessions, and he intended to safeguard them until his father was found. He confirmed his refusal to surrender them.
Jiang Xuewen, having been eavesdropping, urged Wu Shuang to intervene, fearing a fight between Ding Yunqi and Zhou Qiuhai. Wu Shuang, however, felt powerless to persuade either of them. Concerned about being discovered by her master, she decided to flee, despite Jiang Xuewen's attempts to stop her and his reminder that Ding Yunqi had called their engagement a "misunderstanding." Wu Shuang merely stated she knew what to do and left. Inside, Zhou Qiuhai's anger boiled over.
He challenged Ding Yunqi, demanding to know his intentions for rejecting Wu Shuang, refusing the Heaven Official position, and withholding the Penta-sect's items. He warned Ding Yunqi that he wouldn't be allowed to come and go as he pleased, and summoned his disciples, preparing for a confrontation. Zhou Qiuhai reminded Ding Yunqi that his previous escape at the dock was merely a "narrow escape."
Ding Yunqi retorted by asking if Zhou Qiuhai would disband the Penta-sect if he won the fight, to which Zhou Qiuhai emphatically said no. Ding Yunqi then concluded that violence could not change their fundamental beliefs, only offering temporary satisfaction. He expressed his exhaustion from the constant fighting since returning to Shanghai.
He differentiated his quest for his father, which was to clear his name, from Zhou Qiuhai's intent to kill or imprison him, stating he did not want anyone "helping" him counter-productively. With that, Ding Yunqi bid Zhou Qiuhai farewell and departed. Chu Fengling approached her brother, Luo Yunsong, who already seemed aware of "Her Ladyship's Certificate of Appointment," and she acknowledged that he knew.
The certificate formally appointed Chu Fengling as a special member of the Secret Investigation Team of the Kunlun Mountains, explicitly stating that the Black Feather Team would serve as operational members and that she had the authority to deploy the police when necessary, thereby making her Luo Yunsong's superior. Luo Yunsong responded with sarcasm, noting her new position and implying she had deliberately stayed that morning awaiting the appointment. Chu Fengling denied this, claiming the appointment was unexpected.
She expressed her belief that their objectives were aligned and suggested they "work together." Luo Yunsong disagreed, clarifying that her goal was the Kunlun Mountains, while his sole focus remained Ding Yuanshan, whom he considered his family's murderer. Chu Fengling tried to bridge the gap, arguing that finding either Ding Yuanshan or Ding Yunqi was a necessary step towards unlocking the Kunlun Mountains. Luo Yunsong dismissed her reasoning, emphasizing her new authority over the Black Feather Team.
She defended her actions, explaining that integrating the Black Feather Team into a public institution would legitimize them and that Her Ladyship had promised advanced weaponry. She insisted she wasn't trying to take over his team, but merely to provide them with a formal identity, and felt wronged by his suspicions. She reiterated that Her Ladyship desired their cooperation in apprehending Ding Yuanshan.
Luo Yunsong openly expressed his disapproval of her entering politics, but Chu Fengling asserted it was her own choice and desire. She explained that she had planned to discuss the matter with him that evening, but Her Ladyship had moved quickly to finalize the appointment. She tried to mollify him, urging him not to be angry. Back at his residence, Ding Yunqi found Wu Shuang already there. She was lamenting San Jin's absence and the lack of anyone to cook.
When she asked when San Jin would return, Ding Yunqi revealed that San Jin had left. Wu Shuang was puzzled, asking where he went. Ding Yunqi then explained that Luo Yunsong blamed his father for killing three members of his family and sought revenge on the entire Ding family.
Fearing that San Jin would be counted among them, Ding Yunqi had asked Sun Sanxuan to send San Jin out of the city to ensure he could live a good life, emphasizing San Jin's difficult past. Wu Shuang, asking if his father truly committed the murders, was met with Ding Yunqi's question of whether she believed it; she replied that she did not.
Ding Yunqi was surprised that Wu Shuang had come to the bell tower instead of following her master's orders. He then told her that he had won his argument with Zhou Qiuhai without resorting to violence. Wu Shuang was astonished that he had "won the argument" against her master, insisting that her master was "always right" and he should have lost.
He sarcastically agreed, asking why she, then, had not listened to her master and had come to the bell tower. She struggled to respond, but again affirmed her master was "always right." Later, Wu Shuang, having taken it upon herself to cook, proudly presented dinner to Ding Yunqi, announcing it was her "first time cooking" and he should feel honored.
Ding Yunqi ate a considerable amount, enduring the meal, which Wu Shuang believed he found delicious, noting she had even added extra soy sauce for his "heavy taste." That night, Ding Yunqi was struck by severe stomach pain. Wu Shuang, concerned and unsure how to help, remembered he was a doctor and retrieved his medicine box for him. She commented that he shouldn't have eaten so much, even if it was delicious.
Unexpectedly, San Jin returned, having felt uneasy about leaving. Upon discovering Ding Yunqi's ailment, he quickly deduced from the leftover dishes that Wu Shuang had cooked with mushrooms. He angrily confronted Wu Shuang, revealing Ding Yunqi's severe mushroom allergy and accusing her of poisoning him. Wu Shuang, unaware of the allergy, protested that she was fine after eating it.
San Jin, furious, ordered her out of the kitchen and strictly forbade her from ever touching pots and pans again, pushing her away from the kitchen area. Wu Shuang, attempting to return to Ding Yunqi's side to get him a glass of water, was once again stopped by San Jin. He harshly reaffirmed his ban, stressing that his young master had almost died and that the household could not function without him.
He then made her promise never to touch any cooking utensils again, to which she agreed. Later, Ding Yunqi, in his pain, called out for his mother in his sleep, startling both San Jin and Wu Shuang, who had quietly re-entered the room. He woke up, and San Jin immediately went to get him some water. Meanwhile, Chu Fengling, accompanied by her assistant Auntie Hei, was secretly searching Luo Yunsong's study for the hidden dragon bone.
They speculated on its whereabouts, dismissing the possibility that he would entrust it to experts. To their surprise, Luo Jiutian also entered the study, and they quickly recognized each other. Luo Jiutian questioned their presence in his brother's room, and Chu Fengling turned the question back on him. He stumbled over his words, claiming they shared the same purpose. Chu Fengling quickly clarified their goals were different.
Luo Jiutian then announced he was finished searching and planned to go to the police station to have tea with his brother, a clear threat to report them. Chu Fengling countered with a warning: while their brother might not punish her for searching his room, if he were to discover Luo Jiutian's involvement in "the ancient tomb of the Qing Dynasty," Luo Jiutian would be in serious trouble.
Luo Jiutian instantly feigned ignorance, claiming he didn't understand, and hastily left, stating he wouldn't drink tea and needed to find food. Chu Fengling's assistant noted Luo Jiutian's swollen hand, evidence of his own thorough search. Realizing this, Chu Fengling concluded that there was no point in continuing their search as Luo Jiutian would have found it if it were there. Later, Wu Shuang noticed a familiar comb hanging around Ding Yunqi's neck.
She immediately recognized it as hers and demanded he return it. When he asked where she had gotten it, she refused to tell him, reiterating her demand for its return. He Biao brought Hua Xingchen and Xiao Liuzi back to Zhou Qiuhai at the money shop. He informed Zhou Qiuhai that his two disciples had been questioned and were found to have no connection to the Qing Dynasty tomb case.
He Biao added that returning arrested individuals was an unprecedented action for them, and if Zhou Qiuhai sought further explanation, he should address their director. Zhou Qiuhai, acknowledging this, cryptically told He Biao to "tell your director that he's on my mind." He Biao assured him the message would be delivered. Afterward, Hua Xingchen reported to Zhou Qiuhai that he hadn't disgraced their sect, though Xiao Liuzi had cried under interrogation.
Zhou Qiuhai, saddened, reassured his disciples that he was the one who had failed to protect them. Later, Ding Yunqi expressed his frustration to Zhou Qiuhai, lamenting that despite trying every method, he still couldn't find his father and had "no clue now." He further explained the difficulty of his situation, with the dragon bone still in Luo Yunsong's possession.
Zhou Qiuhai then questioned Ding Yunqi about the masked individual who had saved him at the dock, to which Ding Yunqi replied that he didn't know. Following this, Zhou Qiuhai inquired about Chu Fengling's motives for saving him, wondering why she hadn't returned the dragon bone if she was truly helping him.
