After Qin Meiyang was injured and hospitalized, her grandmother scolded Chen Ting. Ling Xiao was distant from his mother's family members, including Qin Meiyang. Li Haichao visited Qin Meiyang in the hospital, and Chen Ting offered him a stack of money as thanks for his years of care for Ling Xiao. Li Haichao firmly refused, stating he treated Ling Xiao as his own child and would care for him regardless of payment.
However, as Chen Ting was preparing to return to Singapore and insisted, Li Haichao eventually found it hard to refuse her generosity and accepted the money. Chen Ting completed Qin Meiyang’s discharge procedures, and together they said goodbye to Ling Xiao before departing for Singapore. Li Jianjian and He Ziqiu were eager for Chen Ting and Qin Meiyang to leave, and once the mother and daughter drove away, they ran out to Ling Xiao, celebrating their departure.
Soon after, Li Jianjian, who had been learning wood carving online, won a gold award in a competition after Ling Xiao secretly submitted her work. Li Jianjian initially thought the call from the organizers was a scam until Ling Xiao took the phone and confirmed the award, making her extremely happy. She even displayed a celebratory banner outside the noodle restaurant.
Later, during the New Year, the Li and Ling families gathered for a New Year's Eve dinner, and Qi Mingyue called Li Jianjian specifically to wish her a Happy New Year. A new school semester began, and Tang Can transferred to Li Jianjian's class. Tang Can had previously appeared in an ice cream commercial and was a part-time actress. She introduced herself in a particularly elegant and dignified manner, expressing her hope for classmates' help to improve her academic performance.
After school, Qi Mingyue found Tang Can's bus card. She and Li Jianjian went to return it but unintentionally discovered Tang Can in an alley. There, Tang Can had changed out of her school uniform into mature clothes and was applying makeup, completely transforming from her previous pure student image. Li Jianjian and Qi Mingyue were astonished. When Tang Can turned and saw them, her face instantly darkened.
Qi Mingyue dropped the bus card on the ground, and she and Li Jianjian quickly ran away. From that day on, Li Jianjian and Qi Mingyue perceived Tang Can as "two-faced" or a "monster." During physical education class the next day, Li Jianjian mocked Tang Can by imitating her actions from the alley, angering Tang Can. Qi Mingyue, not wanting more trouble, pulled Li Jianjian away to watch He Ziqiu play basketball.
Li Jianjian later deliberately made a face at Tang Can while she was resting with other members of a club. After He Ziqiu finished playing basketball, a middle-aged man named Zhao Huaguang approached him, claiming to be his biological father.
Zhao Huaguang, who had already investigated and learned He Ziqiu was raised by Li Haichao, told He Ziqiu that he had been too poor to raise him, not knowing He Mei was pregnant when they divorced after only a year of marriage. He claimed He Ziqiu must have suffered many grievances living with others and offered to take him abroad to study at the best universities.
He Ziqiu, however, rejected Zhao Huaguang, believing him to be a liar and shaking him off to leave. He Ziqiu remained unhappy that evening, contemplating Zhao Huaguang’s words. He used an excuse to ask his Second Aunt (He Lan) about Zhao Huaguang. He Lan confirmed Zhao Huaguang was indeed his biological father, explaining that Zhao Huaguang's hometown was a remote, poor mountain village near He Mei's, where he was once too poor to support a wife and child.
Zhao Huaguang later became wealthy by marrying a rich woman and working with her family’s business. He had no children of his own, and although he had built a road for his village and was considered a local benefactor, He Lan knew his character was poor and was glad He Ziqiu hadn't inherited his low-quality genes. He Ziqiu implicitly guessed Zhao Huaguang's true motives.
Li Jianjian noticed He Ziqiu's sadness, but he would only say that he was too happy with his current life and feared it being disrupted by outsiders. In class, Li Jianjian checked her exam results and was pleased to see she had moved from second to last to third to last, while Tang Can had scored last. Teacher Huang called Li Jianjian to her office to lecture her.
At that moment, Tang Can's mother arrived with Tang Can, and Teacher Huang assumed it was about Tang Can's grades. Instead, Tang Can's mother requested leave for Tang Can to film an advertisement in Shanghai. Teacher Huang agreed but urged Tang Can not to fall behind in her studies. Tang Can, who truly aspired to be an actress, was not keen on filming commercials but accepted her mother's arrangements.
Jin Yuxiang, Qi Mingyue’s mother, heard about Tang Can and was dismissive, advising Qi Mingyue not to be influenced. Having been impressed by Ling Xiao and He Ziqiu’s good grades, Jin Yuxiang took the opportunity to invite the three siblings—Li Jianjian, Ling Xiao, and He Ziqiu—to dinner. A year later, Jin Yuxiang had a conversation with them about their future aspirations. All three expressed intentions to attend universities in Beijing.
Jin Yuxiang stated that Qi Mingyue wanted to become a lawyer and study at the China University of Political Science and Law, asking the trio to look after her. He Ziqiu shared his plan to become a traffic policeman, while Li Jianjian intended to pursue wood carving.
