Go Ahead Episode 5 Recap
> Go Ahead Recap
Earlier, Ling Xiao had discovered that Qin Meiyang has a birthmark on the back of her neck identical to that of his deceased older sister. Chen Ting finds this profoundly miraculous, believing it to be a sign of fate. She reveals that since Qin Meiyang's birth, she has stopped having recurring dreams of rain and thunder, a phenomenon she attributes to the fact that her first daughter passed away on a night of severe thunderstorms. He Ziqiu's 18th birthday approaches.
Qi Mingyue remembers it is next Friday, while Li Jianjian has forgotten, leading to Qi Mingyue's shy demeanor as she asks about He Ziqiu's gift preference, implying her affection for him. On the day of his birthday, Ling Xiao buys a pair of headphones for him, leaving school accompanied by Li Jianjian, who has been feeling upset regarding Ling Xiao's situation. He Ziqiu returns home and starts cooking.
Aunt He Lan, He Ziqiu's maternal aunt, specifically visits the Li family for his birthday. While He Ziqiu is helping Li Haichao cook in the kitchen, Ling Xiao tells him to go entertain Aunt He Lan. Reluctantly, He Ziqiu leaves the kitchen. He brings a plate of fruit into Li Jianjian's room, where Aunt He Lan is observing Li Jianjian's wood carving. Noticing wood shavings on the table, He Ziqiu tells Li Jianjian to clean them up later.
Aunt He Lan, however, is displeased with He Ziqiu's attitude. She pulls him aside, reminding him that he is not Li Haichao's biological son and must therefore be grateful, not lazy, and diligently do chores around the house. She suggests that he is "eating and drinking for free" and will be disliked by the Li family if he isn't more diligent. Li Haichao, preparing dinner, overhears Aunt He Lan's words from outside the room.
He becomes annoyed by her constant "outsider" perspective, feeling she always expects He Ziqiu to be submissive. Li Haichao calls them for dinner, and the family gathers to eat. Aunt He Lan insists that He Ziqiu toast Li Haichao as a display of gratitude, even threatening to break his legs if he isn't filial in the future. Both He Ziqiu and Li Haichao are embarrassed by this.
Aunt He Lan then tries to make He Ziqiu toast Ling Heping, who declines the offer but gives He Ziqiu a red envelope instead. Li Haichao, having had too much to drink, expresses his true feelings. He confronts Aunt He Lan, criticizing her for being too formal and constantly demanding He Ziqiu's gratitude. He passionately declares that He Ziqiu is already very filial and diligent with chores, despite what Aunt He Lan perceives.
Getting increasingly agitated, Li Haichao asserts his deep love for Ling Xiao and He Ziqiu, considering them his own sons despite their lack of blood relation. He recounts Ling Xiao's sleepless nights after seeing Chen Ting and the many grievances He Ziqiu suffered growing up, always being reminded to be filial or risk being sent away because he was fostered. Li Haichao states that Aunt He Lan's words hurt both him and He Ziqiu deeply.
Overwhelmed, Li Haichao suddenly feels nauseous. Ling Heping and others quickly help the drunken Li Haichao to bed. Aunt He Lan remains in the living room alone, feeling uneasy. After being helped to bed, Li Haichao regains some sobriety and reflects on the past. Seven or eight years ago, He Mei had left He Ziqiu in their mountain village and gone to another city, where she had a brief one-year marriage.
She owed Li Haichao a sum of money which she never repaid. Li Haichao, accompanied by Li Jianjian and Ling Xiao, traveled to He Ziqiu's hometown. He found He Ziqiu neglected by both Aunt He Lan and his maternal grandmother, who initially assumed Li Haichao was there to collect the debt. Feeling deeply pained by He Ziqiu's situation, Li Haichao suddenly decided to offer to raise him, promising him better living conditions and family.
After He Ziqiu was brought back to the city to live with the Li family, he feared being sent away, so he proactively washed clothes and cleaned tables at Li Haichao's noodle shop. When customers joked about him, Li Haichao angrily pulled He Ziqiu aside, reassuring him that he was his own child, just like Li Jianjian, and would never be sent away. He Ziqiu has now lived with the Li family for seven or eight years.
As Aunt He Lan leaves, she advises He Ziqiu not to inquire about He Mei anymore, telling him to forget her to avoid upsetting Li Haichao, as many years have passed since He Mei sent a thank-you letter to Li Haichao, promising to repay the money she owed, but there has been no further news from her. Qin Meiyang unexpectedly shows up alone at Li Jianjian's house, asking Li Jianjian to take her to find Ling Xiao.
Li Jianjian initially refuses, but changes her mind when Qin Meiyang offers her 100 yuan. Li Jianjian accepts the money and takes Qin Meiyang to a place with stone steps. As they walk up, Qin Meiyang accidentally falls down. Li Jianjian hears a scream, turns to see Qin Meiyang at the bottom of the steps. Li Jianjian immediately takes Qin Meiyang to the hospital. Ling Xiao, He Ziqiu, and Li Haichao quickly arrive there.
Fortunately, Qin Meiyang is not seriously injured. Chen Ting, upon her arrival, rages at Li Jianjian, accusing her and questioning how Qin Meiyang fell, even suspecting Li Jianjian purposely injured her. Li Jianjian, who had been facing away, honestly states she doesn't know how Qin Meiyang fell, but Chen Ting refuses to believe her. When Ling Xiao emerges from the ward, Chen Ting immediately dismisses Li Jianjian and goes to attend to Qin Meiyang.
As Li Jianjian looks at Ling Xiao, wanting to say something, Qin Meiyang loudly calls for her brother from inside the ward. Ling Xiao then tells Li Jianjian, He Ziqiu, and Li Haichao to go home. Afterwards, Chen Ting speaks with Ling Xiao, expressing her wish for him to share his affection for Li Jianjian with Qin Meiyang.
Ling Xiao firmly refuses, stating that he is different from Chen Ting and will not share what he considers to belong exclusively to Li Jianjian. Li Jianjian is deeply bothered by these events. He Ziqiu, accompanying Li Jianjian later as they look at the night sky, expresses his view that Chen Ting is shameless and Qin Meiyang is a jinx, believing that the Li and Ling families will only find peace once Qin Meiyang is discharged from the hospital.
For several days, Ling Xiao goes directly to the hospital after school, leading to Li Jianjian not seeing him for a while. She worries that he must be in a bad mood constantly dealing with Chen Ting and feels that she has inadvertently caused trouble for him, though Ling Xiao does not blame her.
When Li Jianjian picks up Ling Xiao from school later, they chat, and Ling Xiao reassures her by stroking her head, affirming that he is not angry about his sister's injury. In the hospital room, Ling Xiao's maternal grandmother scolds Chen Ting, accusing her of spoiling Qin Meiyang and forcing Ling Xiao, a senior in high school, to stay overnight every night to accompany Qin Meiyang. Chen Ting is annoyed, feeling that her mother always finds fault with her actions.
The grandmother further complains that Chen Ting married too far away, preventing her from being present to care for her if she falls ill, and that Chen Ting can only send money in such situations.
