Dongdong got lost after chasing a puppy, and a good Samaritan brought him to the police station. The police required a guardian with identification to pick him up. He Mei, knowing Ling Heping was a police officer, called Li Haichao for help. With Ling Heping's assistance, He Mei retrieved Dongdong. Ling Heping and Li Haichao then learned that Dongdong was not He Mei's biological son.
Dongdong was the child of a staff member from He Mei's time as a beauty salon manager in Shenzhen. Dongdong's mother had endured long-term domestic violence; in an argument, she stabbed her husband to death. The court ruled it excessive self-defense, sentencing her to four years, and she was due for release this year. He Mei had arranged to hire Dongdong's mother upon her release. Ling Heping and Li Haichao were moved by the story.
Dongdong, who rarely spoke, suddenly said "dog," prompting Li Haichao to realize Dongdong wanted to play with Snow Egg, a dog He Ziqiu had once found and was now kept by the supermarket. Li Haichao arranged for He Mei to take Snow Egg. He Mei was grateful to Li Haichao but felt she had caused trouble. Li Haichao, curious, asked if He Mei had remarried, and she confirmed she was still alone.
Li Haichao questioned why she had kept them in the dark, especially since He Ziqiu had been upset under the impression she had remarried. He Mei explained her principle: she had promised that if Li Haichao raised He Ziqiu, he would be Li Haichao's son, and she would not claim him back. Li Haichao angrily reminded her of her unkept promise to return for He Ziqiu. He Mei, stung, cried, and Li Haichao comforted her, as he also felt bad.
He Mei expressed that she felt unworthy of being a mother for abandoning He Ziqiu and did not hope for reconciliation. Qi Mingyue's mother, Jin Yuxiang, paid a house deposit for Qi Mingyue without her father, Qi Papa's, approval. Qi Papa flew back from out of town and met Jin Yuxiang and Qi Mingyue at a restaurant, where the family could not eat harmoniously.
Qi Papa strongly opposed spending all their savings to buy a house, worrying that, being in their fifties, they would have no money for unexpected incidents like illness. Jin Yuxiang insisted on buying the house, stating she wanted to solve Qi Mingyue's biggest life pressure. Qi Mingyue, while acknowledging her own biggest pressure came from Jin Yuxiang, supported her father.
Jin Yuxiang scolded Qi Papa for saying inauspicious things and remained unyielding, despite Qi Papa usually deferring to her on everything else. The argument escalated, with Jin Yuxiang angrily threatening divorce if Qi Papa continued to oppose the purchase. In anger, Qi Papa also stated he would divorce if she insisted, then left the table. Qi Mingyue blamed Jin Yuxiang for being excessive and casually bringing up divorce, but Jin Yuxiang saw no fault in her actions.
Since Tang Can started working at the museum, her relationship with her parents had not improved. However, during a lunch break, her mother, Tang Mama, expressed satisfaction with Tang Can's recent changes and suggested she take the civil servant exam the following year. Tang Mama recalled how Tang Can, as an actress, had earned enough to buy the family two houses and a car.
She noted that the family's small supermarket now generated sufficient income, crediting Tang Can for enabling her parents to live a good life, and expressing that they would be fully relieved once Tang Can settled down. Chen Ting and Qin Meiyang visited Ling Xiao at his hospital, giving gifts to the front desk staff. Feng Xixi deduced Qin Meiyang was Ling Xiao's sister from his personal file.
After surgery, Ling Xiao swapped shifts to spend the afternoon with them, taking them for lunch and to play. Later, Ling Xiao spent the afternoon shopping with Chen Ting and Qin Meiyang. That night, Li Jianjian snuck into Ling Xiao's room, worried he couldn't sleep, offering to keep him company.
Ling Xiao appreciated her concern but sent her back, mentioning his plan to take Chen Ting and Qin Meiyang to Gulangyu Island the next morning and the potential trouble if Li Haichao found out. The next morning, Ling Xiao found Li Jianjian's birthday gift—new shoes—on his table and happily put them on.
For Ling Xiao's birthday, He Ziqiu kindly made a cake, but when Qin Meiyang came to pick it up, she insisted on paying despite He Ziqiu's refusal, stating Chen Ting's instructions to leave money if he wouldn't accept. She placed a stack of money on the table and left, leaving He Ziqiu angry, so he did not attend Ling Xiao's birthday party that night. Chen Ting hosted a dinner at a hotel for Ling Xiao's birthday.
Ling Xiao and the others present were visibly unhappy about the cake payment but said nothing. Chen Ting toasted Li Haichao, thanking him for his care of Ling Xiao over the years but with sarcasm, reminding him that Ling Xiao was not his biological son. Ling Heping remained silent and looked uneasy throughout the dinner. Everyone at the table was unhappy and filled with suppressed anger. When Li Jianjian went to the restroom, Qin Meiyang followed her.
At the sink, Qin Meiyang asked Li Jianjian if she was dating Ling Xiao. Upon confirmation, Qin Meiyang declared their relationship futile, saying both she and Chen Ting disliked Li Jianjian and would never accept her marrying Ling Xiao, adding that she personally hated Li Jianjian. Li Jianjian remained unfazed, stating she didn't care. Seeing Li Jianjian's attitude, Qin Meiyang ended the conversation. After dinner, Ling Xiao accompanied Chen Ting and Qin Meiyang back.
Li Haichao and Li Jianjian waited for Ling Heping to bring the car. Li Jianjian, after a moment, said He Ziqiu had asked her to return quickly and decided to take a taxi to talk to him.
