Ever Night Season 2 Episode 5 Recap
> Ever Night Season 2 Recap
The Yulan Festival arrived, and Ning Que attended with Sangsang. Various martial arts sects gathered in the grand hall, offering their respects to Sangsang, who was widely regarded as the future High Priest of Light or Daughter of Light. Qu Ni and Bao Shu were already present, eager to witness the Son of Lord of the Deceased manifest under the Yulan Bell's call.
Ning Que publicly declared that if anyone continued to call him the Son of Lord of the Deceased, they would face his rudeness. Mo Shanshan arrived shortly after and, observing the hostile atmosphere created by Qu Ni and Bao Shu, worried for Ning Que. Guan Hai returned to his cave to report to Master Qi Shan that Qu Ni had stolen the Yulan Bell. Without hesitation, Qi Shan, accompanied by Guan Hai, hurried to the great hall to intervene.
Qu Ni tightly clutched the Yulan Bell, as she and Bao Shu vocally asserted that Ever Night was approaching, exaggerating the dangers to insist on testing Ning Que with the bell. Qu Ni, convinced Ning Que was the Son of Lord of the Deceased, cited Wei Guangming's past judgment as proof. Ning Que vehemently argued against them, warning Qu Ni not to bring disaster upon Yuelun State and openly questioning the bell's authenticity.
Qu Ni remained unyielding, and Bao Shu threatened Ning Que with the bell. Lu Chenjia then explained that the Yulan Bell was crafted from bronze that had rested for countless years amidst purifying Yulan flowers in the Pure Land of West Pole. It had then been tempered through countless years of cultivation with Tianqing, imbuing it with Tianqing's essence, making it a sacred artifact capable of discerning evil and warning all beings. Ning Que, however, remained skeptical.
He questioned why, if the bell was truly so powerful, West Shrine had killed so many people in its search for the Son of Lord of the Deceased, and why Wei Guangming had been imprisoned for over a decade. He mocked the bell, suggesting it might be a common bell stolen from an old ascetic, wondering if its true owner would be distraught upon discovering its disappearance. Qu Ni defended the bell's legitimacy.
As Bao Shu moved to ring the bell, Master Qi Shan stepped forward and ordered him to stop, preventing the immediate confrontation. Ning Que then produced the Academy's treasured Tianluo handkerchief, stating that this relic could subdue all evil in the world. He provocatively suggested that a deceased Yuelun elder might be the Son of Lord of the Deceased, offering to dig up her ashes and test them.
Suddenly, a voice—Master Qi Shan's—spoke in Sangsang's mind, urging her to leave the hall immediately before the bell rang. Sangsang, feigning exhaustion, declared her need to depart, and Ning Que readily agreed. Qu Ni and Bao Shu, however, vehemently blocked their path. Qi Shan's voice then echoed in Ning Que's mind, instructing him to ensure their escape, even if he had to kill Bao Shu.
Defiant, Ning Que declared he would leave and challenged anyone to stop him, then proceeded to exit the hall with Sangsang. Despite Qi Shan's earlier intervention, Bao Shu suddenly rang the Yulan Bell. Immediately, a multitude of crows swarmed into the hall. Ning Que remained unharmed, but Sangsang was engulfed by a swirling mass of Tianqing energy. She coughed up blood and cried out in agonizing pain, her screams only drawing more crows that relentlessly entangled her.
Enraged by Sangsang's suffering, Ning Que furiously attacked Bao Shu, calling him scum and a bedbug. He then unfurled his large black umbrella, shielding Sangsang, which caused the flock of crows to disperse instantly. Master Qi Shan then announced to everyone that Ning Que was not the Son of Lord of the Deceased; rather, Sangsang was the Daughter of Lord of the Deceased. Qu Ni immediately incited the crowd to eliminate Sangsang for the good of the world.
Ning Que refused to believe Qi Shan, asserting that he had found Sangsang amidst a pile of dead bodies and had raised her by feeding her porridge, considering her his own daughter, his Sangsang, not the Daughter of Lord of the Deceased. Qi Shan, with a heavy heart, confirmed that he had discovered this secret during Sangsang's treatment at his cave.
He explained that when he placed his hand above her palm, he felt a unique wave of bitter coldness, a distinct mark of the Lord of the Deceased within her. He further clarified that the three Go games played at Mount Wa were specifically designed by him to uncover her true identity, as even the Sage and West Shrine's divine skills couldn't remove that coldness, proving her illness was unusual.
In the first game, Sangsang used a "sky calculation," an ability beyond human reach, proving she was not an earthly being. In the second game, she ignored the conventional rules and chose the black stones, signaling an opposition to the balance of black and white, which mirrored the eternal conflict between darkness and light in the heavens. Finally, in the third game, Sangsang had transcended the eternal law of death, a power that further solidified her extraordinary nature.
Qi Shan explained that these three outcomes, collectively, pointed to one undeniable truth: Sangsang was indeed the Daughter of Lord of the Deceased. Ning Que vehemently refused to accept this revelation. Qi Shan further elaborated, asking Ning Que if he had never noticed the many unusual occurrences during their childhood together. He pointed to Ning Que's black umbrella, stating it was not an ordinary earthly object.
When Ning Que questioned its nature, Qi Shan revealed it was a piece of Night itself. He explained that sixteen years prior, when the universal travelers converged in the badlands to find the Son of Lord of the Deceased, General Lin's mansion was massacred by Xia Hou. However, just next door, a baby girl was born in Zeng's mansion – that girl was Sangsang.
Qi Shan concluded that Wei Guangming had indeed made a mistake; had he not, it would have been Zeng's mansion, not General Lin's, that was wiped out that fateful night. Heartbroken and devastated, Ning Que looked at Sangsang beneath his black umbrella, remembering every moment of their life together since childhood. Sangsang, not wanting to implicate Ning Que, urged him to leave. But Ning Que swore he would not let her die and would never abandon her.
Qu Ni accused Ning Que of deliberately stalling, hoping for the Academy to come to their rescue. Ning Que, supporting Sangsang, refuted the claim, stating that he had protected Sangsang long before he joined the Academy, shouldering her through mountains and avoiding those who wished them harm. He then pleaded with Master Qi Shan to allow them to leave Mount Wa. Qi Shan, torn and deeply pained at the thought of losing Sangsang, his unique disciple, reached out to her.
Overwhelmed by grief, he fainted. Qu Ni seized the moment, rallying the crowd to kill the Daughter of Lord of the Deceased. Ning Que, declaring his readiness to wage war against anyone who harmed Sangsang, fiercely fought to protect her. Seizing an opportunity, Ning Que carried Sangsang on his back and broke out of the hall. As their pursuers closed in, Mo Shanshan intervened, using a divine talisman to block the crowd and cover Ning Que and Sangsang's escape.
