In the first year of Tianqi, a prophecy from the Almighty Book foretold the coming of Eternal Night. Wei Guangming, the High Priest of Light from West Shrine, concluded that the Son of Lord of the Deceased had been born in Tang State. Using his knowledge of the King of Tang secretly marrying a Saint Virgin of the Demonic Cult, Wei blackmailed Tang General Xia Hou into slaughtering General Xuanwei's family.

One hundred and twenty-seven people tragically died that night, but Ning Que was the sole survivor. On his escape, he found an infant girl in a pile of corpses, rescued her, and named her Sangsang. He raised her, and though their bond was ostensibly that of master and servant, their lives had long become inseparable, enduring life and death together from Minshan Mountain to Wei City, and then to the House of Calligraphy in the capital.

Fifteen years later, Ning Que and Sangsang returned to the capital. Ning Que successfully enrolled in the Academy, becoming a personal disciple of the Headmaster and later a successor to Yanse, the Master of Talisman. He also forged a friendship with King of Tang, Li Zhongyi. When the Almighty Book appeared in the badlands, Ning Que, as the Universe Traveler of the Academy, was sent to retrieve it. Along the way, he met Mo Shanshan, Lady Book-Addict.

With her help, Ning Que successfully advanced his cultivation stage and shot an arrow through his old rival, Long Qing. This act, however, led to him being pursued by Ye Hongyu, Tao-Addict and a member of West Shrine. During a critical moment, the Relic of Demonic Cult opened, and the three, Ning Que, Mo Shanshan, and Ye Hongyu, inadvertently entered the forbidden area, engaging in a life-and-death struggle against the mysterious Liansheng 32.

Ye Hongyu was severely wounded, and Ning Que was caught in a demonic state. Upon returning to the capital, Ning Que had to choose between Mo Shanshan and Sangsang. He then painfully bid farewell to Mo Shanshan. Ye Hongyu, badly injured and framed by others in West Shrine, fled to the capital, where she spent six months with Ning Que and Sangsang. Later, Ning Que and Xia Hou engaged in a life-and-death duel.

In a desperate moment, Sangsang, to save Ning Que, expended all her Brilliance of Haotian, emitting a powerful light. Ning Que then killed Xia Hou, avenging his family, but Sangsang's chronic cold disease relapsed, leaving her critically ill. As Sangsang lay dying, the Heavenly Maid summoned her, and her soul drifted away. The Headmaster, Dean of the Academy, despite expending all his lifelong cultivation, could not expel the accumulated yin-cold energy from Sangsang's body.

He knew that only Qi Shan, an ascetic from Lanke Temple, could save her. With the Yulan Festival approaching on Mount Wa, during which Qi Shan would meet guests in his cave, the Headmaster instructed Ning Que to take Sangsang to Mount Wa. He stressed the urgency of reaching Qi Shan before the last leaf of the tree in front of his cave fell, as Sangsang's life depended on it.

Before departing, Ning Que went to bid farewell to King Li Zhongyi. The King, concerned that the Son of Lord of the Deceased might act, offered to send elite cavalry to escort them. Ning Que politely declined, explaining that if the rumors were true, West Shrine and all those who revered Light would seek to kill him, and no number of cavalry could protect him without implicating the King and Tang State.

The King, despite his worries, respected Ning Que's decision, expressing his deep affection for his "13th younger brother." Ning Que then said goodbye to the twelve masters of the Academy, each of whom gave him protective talismans and artifacts. Without delay, Ning Que and Sangsang immediately set off from the capital for Mount Wa.

Watching them leave, He Mingchi, a disciple of the South Branch of Sect Haotian, felt a surge of secret satisfaction, confident that West Shrine would never let Ning Que go. Meanwhile, in West Shrine, Ye Hongyu, after intense cultivation, finally broke through to the Stage of All-Knowing. She stormed into the Light Hall to confront and seek revenge on Mo Yu, the High Priest of Jurisdiction. Their disagreement quickly escalated into a fierce battle.

Neither was willing to yield, fighting intensely. Ye Hongyu, not wishing to prolong the fight, used her ultimate techniques, pushing Mo Yu relentlessly and eventually striking him down. Mo Yu, astonished that Ye Hongyu had used their battle to ascend to the Stage of All-Knowing, spat blood and fainted. Ye Hongyu naturally assumed the role of High Priest of Jurisdiction.

She then abolished the cultivation of Zi Mo, Jin Xuan, Lei Yu, and Mu Honglin, the cavalrymen who had once humiliated her, and forcibly expelled them from West Shrine, vowing that they would pay for their past actions. Ning Que and Sangsang traveled day and night. One day, while resting in Qingxia, their large black horse was caught stealing porridge from a local villager.

The villager, Yang Erxi, identified himself as a former soldier of the East Border Army and expressed a desire for Ning Que's strong, military-like horse. Ning Que, in turn, revealed he was a former Wei City border army soldier. Recognizing their shared military background, they shook hands, putting aside their dispute. Yang Erxi, mistaking Sangsang first for Ning Que's daughter and then his wife, exchanged friendly words before Ning Que and Sangsang continued their journey to the Yulan Festival.

Elsewhere, Long Qing, now consumed by madness, had drained a saint's power, quickly reaching the Stage of All-Knowing. After consuming a Tongtian Pill, he descended the mountain, vowing revenge on Ning Que and proclaiming his ambition and strength to the world. Along the way, he encountered the fallen cavalrymen — Zi Mo, Jin Xuan, Lei Yu, and Mu Honglin — whom Ye Hongyu had expelled from West Shrine.

Desperate and without direction, they pledged their loyalty to Long Qing when he offered them Zuodi Pills, which restored their Qihai Xueshan, allowing them to regain their cultivation. They willingly became his Fallen Knights, ready to join him on his path of vengeance. As dusk fell, Ning Que and Sangsang lit a campfire by the roadside to rest.

Sangsang asked Ning Que if his affection for her would ever fade, especially after being together for so long and considering his past feelings for others like the princess and Lady Book-Addict. Ning Que reassured her that after sixteen years together, their love had only deepened, and would continue to do so. However, Sangsang suddenly sensed the approach of West Shrine cavalry at the Stage of Seethrough, noting five in the upper stage and one at the peak.

Ning Que quickly pulled her back into their carriage and urged their horse to hurry. Sangsang then detected a blockade ahead. Ning Que jumped off the carriage, coming face to face with Long Qing. Without a word, the two sworn enemies immediately engaged in battle. Ning Que unleashed his arrows, but Long Qing expertly dodged them all. Fearing for Ning Que's safety, Sangsang called him back into the carriage.

Long Qing then used his unique skills to surround the carriage, and in the ensuing struggle, Sangsang was struck, spitting blood and fainting. Ning Que, desperate, invoked a Rain Talisman, calling upon his master for assistance. Heavy rain began to fall, and while Long Qing remained unfazed, his Fallen Knights were all knocked off their horses.

Long Qing, calm amidst the downpour, stated that the battle had just begun and planned to wait until the Rain Talisman dissipated with the rain, confident of Ning Que's demise. Ning Que retorted with his usual sharp wit, reminding Long Qing that despite his boasts, he had always been the victor in their past encounters, and that his past defeats of Long Qing had only made Ning Que stronger.

Long Qing mocked Ning Que for his "nasty" attitude, but Ning Que claimed it was befitting of the "Son of Lord of the Deceased," a title he was content to let Long Qing claim. With that, Ning Que readied his final technique.
