The people in the village were descendants of that Soul Master, but because they didn't have Soul Rings, they could never become Soul Masters.
The village chief used a special medicine to make Ma Hongjun possess the mutated Evil Fire Phoenix as his Martial Soul. That night, the village chief wanted to take the sleeping Ma Hongjun back for experiments. His father tried to obstruct him in every way, but was controlled by the medicine and couldn't help himself.
