A murder occurred at Jin Maochang's textile mill; the manager was killed in Jin Maochang's office. Jin Maochang called to report the crime. Lin Shaobai, who happened to be shopping nearby, heard about it and rushed to the murder scene to investigate. He discovered footprints below the window and a safety amulet that had fallen to the ground. His first thought was Xu Wei, because he had previously given this safety amulet to Xu Wei.

Out of self-interest, Lin Shaobai pocketed the safety amulet. Meanwhile, Lu Zhengyang arrived at the murder scene, ordered Lin Shaobai to leave, then questioned the factory employees, and subsequently questioned Lin Shaobai.
