Being a Hero Episode 9 Recap
> Being a Hero Recap
Following the discovery of drugs at Yang Ling's coffee shop, an incident Chen Yu believed was a frame-up against Wu Zhenfeng, police intensify their efforts. Chen Yu and Liu Kaihua meet with Lin Dezan to discuss the ongoing situation. Chen Yu suggests that if Wu Zhenfeng is truly looking for this particular gambling den, it must be connected to K and inevitably to drug trafficking.
He notes that two previous attempts to apprehend suspects failed to yield drugs, indicating the culprits' quick reactions. Liu Kaihua emphasizes the need for prior arrangement, sending someone undercover into the gambling den for reconnaissance and evidence collection. They can only act once they have confirmed evidence of drug transactions and quantities. Liu Kaihua reveals he has already started organizing files of previous suspects and their social connections, hoping to find someone suitable who can infiltrate without raising suspicion.
Lan Anran later reveals that she knows Wan Mengmeng, a person who appears in the files. Yang Ling calls Lin Dezan, informing him of his daughter Tingting's arrival. Lin Dezan is surprised, realizing he mistook the date; Tingting was supposed to arrive today, the first. He hastily issues strict orders for tight surveillance of the gambling den before rushing off. Lin Dezan arrives to meet Tingting, who is preoccupied with her phone.
He offers her money, relaying her mother's advice to take vitamins, but Tingting suggests bank transfers are safer due to the large amount. Lin Dezan tries to invite her to dinner, hoping to spend some time, even just two hours. However, Tingting refuses, stating she has pre-booked flight tickets and upcoming IELTS classes. Lin Dezan offers to drive her, but she declines, saying her car is waiting.
As she leaves, Wu Zhenfeng watches from a distance, muttering about Lin Dezan's seemingly ample funds for "IELTS and studying abroad." Lin Dezan turns to Wu Zhenfeng, warning him to behave himself while staying at Yang Ling's place and not to cause any trouble. Yang Ling angrily confronts Lin Dezan, upset that he arranged for Wu Zhenfeng to stay with her, which caused an argument with her father and further estranged them.
Lin Dezan apologizes for her distress and promises to talk to her father. Later that evening, Chen Yu comes to Yang Ling, quickly apologizing for the morning's incident. Yang Ling chastises him, reminding him that he promised no trouble, yet on the very first day, she witnessed what meth looks like. Chen Yu confronts Wu Zhenfeng, accusing him of not being truthful in his police statement and asking if K framed him. Wu Zhenfeng remains silent.
Chen Yu gives him a light kick, telling him to get ready for dinner, but sternly warns him to apologize to Yang Ling at the meal. He stresses that Wu Zhenfeng caused a lot of trouble at her coffee shop on his first day, regardless of whether the meth was his. Meanwhile, Lin Dezan goes to apologize to Yang Xingquan.
Lin Dezan assures him that Chen Yu is loyal and cares deeply for Yang Ling, promising he would not let her come to harm. However, Yang Xingquan dismisses this, believing Lin Dezan doesn't understand the dangers. He asserts that the police are merely trying to use Wu Zhenfeng for information, and housing such a person near Yang Ling is reckless, potentially endangering both her and Chen Yu.
During dinner, Yang Ling states she believes the meth was not placed by Wu Zhenfeng, but she understands her father's intense anger. She reveals their tragic family history: twenty years ago, her father reported a drug dealer to Lin Dezan, which ultimately led to her mother's death and her father's decade-long exile abroad, shattering their family. She asserts that while Lin Dezan bears responsibility, it was the drug dealer who truly took her mother's life.
This painful past explains why she, and her father, absolutely cannot tolerate drugs anywhere near them. She warns Wu Zhenfeng not to let such an incident occur at her shop again, urging him to show some gratitude to Chen Yu for his efforts. Wu Zhenfeng, reflecting on his own father, bitterly contrasts his situation with Yang Xingquan's, whose innocence can at least be proven and who is still alive.
He feels the police wrongly labeled his father a drug dealer, implying he deserved to die, and he desires revenge. Chen Yu warns Wu Zhenfeng that he cannot accomplish anything alone and will only jeopardize himself, urging him to share everything he knows. Wu Zhenfeng, however, views this as Chen Yu's true purpose for keeping him around. Yang Xingquan remains deeply wary of Wu Zhenfeng.
He tells Chen Yu that although there is no direct proof of Wu Zhenfeng's drug involvement, his three years spent in Mengka after being rescued—first as a laborer, then joining a local militia due to his combat skills—strongly suggest a connection to drugs, as the region is inextricably linked to drug activities.
Yang Xingquan questions Wu Zhenfeng's contacts and purpose in Yunhe, implicitly expressing his distrust and concern about Lin Dezan's decision to house a potentially dangerous person near Yang Ling. Posing as a misguided youth, Lan Anran contacts Wan Mengmeng. She eagerly asks about a gambling den, pretending to have already lost hundreds of thousands and desperately wanting to recoup her losses.
Wan Mengmeng, seemingly viewing Lan Anran as a significant mark, informs her about a boxing match happening that night and arranges to meet there. Wu Zhenfeng instructs his associate, Li ShougGui, to find a person named "Ah Shu." Upon learning about a boxing match scheduled for that night, Wu Zhenfeng deduces that if it is K's main sales point in Yunhe, Ah Shu will surely be there.
As they prepare to leave, Li ShougGui expresses concern about getting caught again so soon after rehab, but Wu Zhenfeng reassures him, knowing Liu Kaihua had already arranged for Chen Yu to follow them. Meanwhile, Lan Anran contacts Liu Kaihua, providing her location, and is soon picked up by Wan Mengmeng. Police surveillance confirms Lan Anran's target is heading towards an abandoned auto scrap yard on Union Road in the city outskirts, which aligns with Wu Zhenfeng's suspected destination.
Liu Kaihua mobilizes his elite police team, confirming the location and preparing for deployment. The abandoned auto scrap yard has been transformed into a bustling, underground boxing venue, teeming with people. Lan Anran uses the excuse of finding a restroom to discreetly scout the area. Through her communication device, Chen Yu informs her that Wu Zhenfeng has also entered the fight club, warning her to be cautious.
Lan Anran spots a suspicious flat-roofed building, guarded by four men, which she suspects is where drugs or money are being stored. She attempts to approach it for evidence, but Wan Mengmeng pulls her away, directing her to a different restroom and sternly warning her not to wander off carelessly. To Lan Anran's shock, Wu Zhenfeng suddenly appears in the boxing ring as one of the fighters. He makes eye contact with her from the ring.
From across the arena, Ah Shu recognizes Wu Zhenfeng and immediately orders his men to "kill him" on the spot, realizing Wu Zhenfeng is there to cause trouble. Wu Zhenfeng, aware of the police surveillance, quickly tells Li ShougGui that if they are arrested, they should only claim they came to box and know nothing else.
Ah Shu, infuriated, orders the match to be stopped immediately, despite the placed bets, acknowledging that Wu Zhenfeng is clearly there to "smash the place." Wu Zhenfeng has already defeated his opponent. After the match is halted, Ah Shu dispatches someone to summon Wu Zhenfeng. To everyone's surprise, Wu Zhenfeng then walks towards Ah Shu, bringing Lan Anran with him, and explicitly identifies her as "a cop" right in front of Ah Shu.
