Chen Yu reports to Lin Dezan that he found jade fragments at the Hu Qingshan murder scene. He explains that the fragment matches a jade pendant given to him by Wu Gang, who was in the jade business. Wu Gang had given an identical pendant to his son, Wu Zhenfeng, when they were children. Believing this proves Wu Zhenfeng has returned, Chen Yu requests to merge the Hu Qingshan murder case with Wu Gang's three-year-old case.

Lin Dezan simply instructs him to file the evidence. After leaving the station, Ba Peng calls his superior, Huang Daxian, who orders him to arrange for "Feng Ge" to be permanently silenced. Huang Daxian clarifies that Ba Peng is not to kill him but to frame him for Hu Qingshan's murder and set him up for a police bust, forcing him to bring all his drugs to the scene.

Following these orders, Ba Peng calls Lin Dezan, claiming he has found Hu Qingshan's killer, a man known as "Feng Ge," and has arranged to meet him that night. Chen Yu covertly monitors Ba Peng, following him to a deserted chemical plant. He contacts his colleague, asking him to request backup but to report the situation "only" to Liu Kaihua, as he suspects a leak within the department.

Inside the plant, Ba Peng and his associates plot to subdue Wu Zhenfeng and frame him with the drugs. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Chen Liwen reprimands Lin Dezan, noting that the anti-drug situation in Yunhe has worsened during Lin Dezan's three years as director. Lin Dezan defends his meticulous "slow-cook soup" strategy, explaining he aims to map out and dismantle Yunhe's entire drug trafficking network before he retires.

As Wu Zhenfeng confronts Ba Peng and his men at the plant, Liu Kaihua arrives with police support. Chen Yu and Liu Kaihua rush in to make arrests, but Wu Zhenfeng escapes in the chaos. To destroy evidence, Ba Peng's men douse the trunk of a car filled with drugs in gasoline and set it on fire. As he flees, Wu Zhenfeng glances back at the officers battling the blaze.

An enraged Lin Dezan arrives and berates Liu Kaihua for launching a major operation without reporting it, accusing them of disrupting his month-long plan and demanding written self-critiques from everyone involved. At the scene, Chen Yu finds another jade pendant. He presents it to Lin Dezan, along with the fragment from the first crime scene, as proof that Wu Zhenfeng was present at both locations. He once again insists on merging the cases and issuing a warrant for Wu Zhenfeng.

Lin Dezan furiously rejects the request, arguing that a jade pendant is not definitive proof, as it could have been lost, stolen, or sold. He lectures Chen Yu on the difference between conjecture and hard evidence, stating that what one sees isn't always the truth and a single item does not form a complete evidence chain. After the heated exchange, Lin Dezan apologizes for his tone, but Chen Yu leaves the office angered.

Lin Dezan recalls an incident from three years ago: after Wu Gang's death, he informed Wu Zhenfeng that an autopsy was necessary due to the discovery of ten kilograms of heroin at the scene, implying his father was a drug dealer. The accusation caused Wu Zhenfeng to lash out, claiming Lin Dezan was the one who should be investigated, as drug trafficking had only grown more rampant during his tenure. Troubled, Lin Dezan calls Liu Kaihua for a meeting.

Elsewhere, Yang Ling waits to celebrate Chen Yu's return to the anti-drug squad, but he is visibly preoccupied, replaying Lin Dezan's questionable words and behavior in his mind. Lin Dezan meets with Liu Kaihua and explains his actions. He reveals he went to Ba Peng, knowing he possessed "Dahuang" capsules, and used this as leverage to pressure him into investigating the source of the drugs and the details of Hu Qingshan's murder, hoping to uncover the entire trafficking network.

Lin Dezan also admits he was the one who tipped Ba Peng off about the earlier police search of his pharmacy, causing Liu Kaihua to question his superior's methods and demand a credible explanation. Meanwhile, Chen Yu confides in Yang Ling about the events three years ago. He recounts how Wu Zhenfeng overheard the plan for an arrest operation targeting his father's suspected killer.

By interfering, Wu Zhenfeng caused the mission to fail, which led to officer Gong Wei being severely injured and Chen Yu's own suspension from the anti-drug squad. Seeking to make Wu Zhenfeng answer for his actions, Chen Yu tracked him down abroad. During a struggle on a bus, they bumped into a man, revealing he was armed. Chen Yu warned Wu Zhenfeng that the man was targeting him.

When they tried to get off, they were ambushed by other passengers, revealing the bus was full of traffickers. The ensuing fight led Chen Yu to conclude that Wu Zhenfeng must have discovered a critical clue, making him a target.
