The Heavenly Empress, acknowledging Run Yu's predicament, presented him with two choices: either personally execute the remaining members of the Dongting tribe, thereby severing ties with them, or bear the full extent of their punishment and atone for his birth mother, Su Li. Run Yu, stating his inability to betray his mother and her family again, chose to take on all the blame himself, offering his life for theirs.

Pleased with his decision, the Heavenly Empress immediately ordered the Thunder God and Lightning Goddess to unleash their Shocking Heavenly Thunder and Lightning Light, combined with her own Lotus Fire of Retribution. She remarked that even the fearsome Qiong Qi could not withstand such a torment, wondering if Run Yu could endure 30,000 rounds of this cruel punishment.

Despite a concerned attendant's reminder that this was the sacred Empyrean Cloud Palace and Run Yu was the Heavenly Emperor's son, the Heavenly Empress insisted on the punishment. Run Yu suffered greatly, crying out for his mother. Kuang Lu arrived, horrified to see his state, and desperately tried to rouse him. She furiously called the Heavenly Empress a demon, offering herself for punishment instead.

When the Heavenly Empress prepared to use Glazed Pure Fire, which was not part of the prescribed punishment and would certainly kill Run Yu, Water Immortal intervened, demanding to know what crime Run Yu had committed to deserve such an illegal execution. The Heavenly Empress accused Water Immortal of shielding a criminal, but he retorted by highlighting her attempt to murder the Heavenly Emperor's son. Just then, the Heavenly Emperor appeared, commanding them to stop.

He issued an imperial decree, declaring Su Li executed but pardoning the Dongting Water Tribe, who he believed were deceived and coerced. He warned them against future transgressions. Run Yu, weakened but grateful, thanked the Heavenly Emperor on behalf of the 36,400 souls of Dongting. He then implored the Heavenly Empress to release them. The Heavenly Emperor instructed the Heavenly Empress to manage the aftermath.

The Heavenly Empress, though thwarted, warned Run Yu that his 30,000 heavenly punishments were ten times more agonizing than slow slicing, and his recovery would be even worse. Run Yu defiantly vowed to live, to personally witness her uphold her promise and release everyone without fail. Run Yu, delirious with pain, experienced intense cold and burning sensations, hallucinating about his mother.

Later, the Heavenly Empress, Tu Yao, confronted the Heavenly Emperor, blaming him for being soft-hearted after delegating the matter to her. She accused him of acting the benevolent ruler while leaving her to be the villain, causing widespread resentment. She blamed his indulgence for Run Yu's defiance, noting how Run Yu now championed his birth mother and the Dongting remnants over her. She feared Run Yu would destabilize the Heaven Realm.

The Heavenly Emperor reassured her that he was in control, emphasizing the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate heirs, and that he knew who held more importance between Xu Feng and Run Yu. Tu Yao urged him to remember his words. Run Yu eventually awoke, immediately inquiring about the Dongting tribe. Kuang Lu chided him for his disregard for his own life.

Run Yu explained that he had promised his mother to protect his people, not wanting them to endure the centuries of hardship and displacement he had suffered himself. Water Immortal visited, commending Run Yu's empathy. Run Yu, still weak, asked for Water Immortal's help in safeguarding the vulnerable Dongting Water Tribe, admitting his own inability to contend with the Heavenly Empress. Water Immortal assured him he would do his utmost and vowed to oppose the Heavenly Empress until the end.

Run Yu then specifically requested that neither Kuang Lu nor Water Immortal reveal his injuries to anyone, especially Jin Mi, as he did not wish for her to worry or see him in such a state of disgrace. The Heavenly Emperor later visited Run Yu in Xuanji Palace to aid his healing. He admonished Run Yu for failing to cultivate patience and endurance, stating that Run Yu's conflict with the Heavenly Empress made his own position difficult.

He dismissed the incident at the Empyrean Cloud Palace as a harsh lesson and made Run Yu swear an immortal's oath never to speak of his suffering for the Dongting Water Tribe again. Run Yu, however, questioned whether his mother, Su Li, was truly as wicked as portrayed. The Heavenly Emperor insisted the matter was closed, advising Run Yu, as a High Immortal, to rise above worldly attachments and emotional entanglements.

He surprisingly revealed that his delayed intervention during Run Yu's punishment was a test, hinting that Run Yu's defiance against the Heavenly Empress would now position him to counter her and the Bird Family. Run Yu then pressed, asking if the Heavenly Emperor would have abandoned the Dongting Water Tribe to their fate had he not intervened.

The Heavenly Emperor replied that Run Yu was too young to understand, explaining that after tens of thousands of years, he would realize that mortals were as ephemeral as mayflies, their brief lives meaningless, and their absence would not alter the grand scheme of things. This, he declared, was the merciless way of Heaven. This revelation struck Run Yu deeply, as he realized his entire existence was merely a calculated conspiracy.

He concluded that in the Heavenly Emperor's eyes, notions of family, love, and kinship were nothing more than chess pieces to be manipulated. He then resolved to live on, determined to become stronger from his suffering. Meanwhile, in the Floral Realm, Yu Lan knelt before Chief Peony, tearfully confessing her grave mistake.

She admitted to secretly contacting members of the Dongting Water Tribe, who sought an alliance against the Heaven Realm, and, in a moment of confusion, revealing Jin Mi's true lineage. She believed this disclosure was directly responsible for Jin Mi's near-fatal encounter with the Spirit-Vanishing Arrow during her mortal trial and sought death to atone for her sin and honor the late Floral God, Zi Fen.

Chief Peony prevented her, reminding Yu Lan that Zi Fen, in her dying wishes, had not sought revenge and had only cared for Jin Mi's well-being. Recognizing Yu Lan's genuine repentance, Chief Peony pardoned her, instructing her never to speak of the matter again, and instead to join her sisters in faithfully upholding Zi Fen's teachings and protecting Jin Mi. Jin Mi arrived at Xuanji Palace to visit Run Yu.

Kuang Lu informed her of Run Yu's dire condition, not eating or sleeping since the Heavenly Empress executed his birth mother, Su Li. She urged Jin Mi to persuade him, as he always listened to her. Jin Mi found Run Yu, expressing her condolences and believing his mother must have been a kind person. Run Yu poured out his heart, lamenting that he had only just reconnected with his mother before watching her die helplessly before him.

Jin Mi shared her own profound grief, recounting how she had watched Rou Rou sacrifice her life to save her, feeling equally helpless. Understanding his pain, Jin Mi offered words of comfort, quoting a mortal saying, "The deceased now has rested in peace, while the alive must keep living on," assuring him his mother would not wish to see him despondent and neglecting himself. Run Yu agreed, acknowledging that those who loved them would not want them to suffer.

He then observed that Jin Mi seemed changed. He mentioned that the Heavenly Emperor had set their wedding date and asked her about her intentions. Jin Mi, fearing that a refusal would only deepen his sorrow, remained silent. Run Yu expressed his desire to observe a three-year mourning period for his mother, as he couldn't be with her when she was alive, and asked Jin Mi if she would wait for him. Jin Mi paused, unable to answer.

He then asked her to simply stay with him for a while, stating that her presence was the only thing that could ease his hatred and pain. Back in the Floral Realm, Jin Mi was warmly greeted by Chief Peony and her friends. They expressed relief that she had returned safely despite her arduous mortal trial. Water Immortal sat down to play chess with Jin Mi.

Hesitantly, Jin Mi asked him what would happen if she did not wish to marry. Water Immortal advised her that her experiences with Fire Immortal in the mortal realm were like a fleeting dream. He cautioned her to separate her mortal self's feelings from her immortal self's choices and to carefully consider her decision before acting.

Elsewhere, Sui He was seen expressing her distress to her aunt, frustrated by Xu Feng's growing obsession with Jin Mi after their mortal trial, despite Sui He's own extreme actions to help him in the mortal realm. Her aunt advised her to remain calm and promised to consider the matter. Meanwhile, Lord Liaoyuan, having followed Xu Feng to the mortal realm, reminisced about his mortal king, wishing to serve him again.

The Matchmaker Immortal, who had discreetly brought Lord Liaoyuan back to the immortal realm, praised his loyalty to Xu Feng. The Matchmaker Immortal presented Lord Liaoyuan to Xu Feng, who thanked him for protecting him during his mortal trial and noted Lord Liaoyuan's unique decision to join him as a mortal. Xu Feng questioned why Lord Liaoyuan hadn't simply protected him as an immortal.

The Matchmaker Immortal quickly made an excuse about his matchmaking duties and departed, reminding Lord Liaoyuan to look after Xu Feng, who was under house arrest. Xu Feng then asked Lord Liaoyuan about the phoenix lanterns from the mortal world. Lord Liaoyuan informed him they were stored in the Imperial Mausoleum. Xu Feng instructed him to retrieve them and place them by the Liuzi Pond.

When Lord Liaoyuan brought back the lanterns, Xu Feng noticed that the one he had made with Jin Mi was missing. Lord Liaoyuan explained that his mortal counterpart, Qin Tong, had placed it in the coffins of King Yi and Jin Mi, as it was King Yi's most cherished lantern. Xu Feng, calling him less intelligent in the Heaven Realm, ordered him to retrieve it immediately.

Observing Jin Mi in the Floral Realm, her friends noted that she had changed since becoming an Immortal. While her sadness stemmed from Rou Rou's death, they speculated her underlying vexation might be due to a perceived inferiority to Run Yu, her future husband, who was a High Immortal while she was only an Immortal. Her happiness, they surmised, came from her engagement to Run Yu. Suddenly, a disturbance was detected in the Water Mirror, prompting them to investigate.
