Following her discovery of Jinxia knowing a lullaby exclusive to her and Lin He, Lin Ling's suspicion that Jinxia might be her sister's daughter grew stronger. As Yang Yue prepared Jinxia's favorite pancakes for her, Lin Ling observed his kindness towards Jinxia. Yang Yue explained that while his father, Yang Chengwan, was strict with Jinxia, he actually favored her the most, always ensuring she received the best food first.
Lin Ling inquired about how long Yang Yue and Jinxia had been neighbors, and he recalled moving there around six years old and having an initial fight with a petite but overwhelming Jinxia. Noticing Yang Chengwan's exceptional kindness to Jinxia, an orphan, Lin Ling deepened her suspicion, wondering if Jinxia could indeed be her sister's daughter. Lin Ling then asked Yang Chengwan about their return to the capital, expressing her firm intention to accompany them.
Yang Chengwan warned her of the dangers posed by Yan Shifan in the capital, but Lin Ling was resolute, revealing that Yan Shifan had saved her from Dong Qisheng and claimed to know the whereabouts of her sister's daughter. Lin Ling further reasoned that if Yan Shifan was so certain about the child's location, it implied he might have taken the child himself.
Yang Chengwan dismissed this as a lie, asserting that Yan Shifan couldn't possibly know the child's whereabouts and urging her not to trust him. However, Lin Ling pressed him, convinced that Yang Chengwan knew the truth and was deliberately concealing it from her, her only remaining relative. She directly questioned if Jinxia was her sister's daughter, which Yang Chengwan vehemently denied.
Meanwhile, in the imperial court, discussions revolved around Huang Yu's negligence as Director-general of the Northeast, which allowed Altan Khan to intrude. Yan Song and Xu Jing offered their perspectives, leading the Emperor to dismiss Huang Yu and hand him over to the Ministry of Justice for trial. The Emperor then appointed Yang Mo to immediately take over Huang Yu's post and repel Altan Khan's army.
Elsewhere, Yuan Jinxia brought pancakes to Xie Xiao, who was deeply saddened after Shangguan Xi informed him about her relationship with Lu Yi. Xie Xiao questioned why Jinxia chose Lu Yi over him, despite his good treatment of her. Jinxia patiently explained that a brother is different from a lover, and her heart belonged only to Lu Yi. She advised him that many beautiful girls existed and a better match awaited him.
Xie Xiao then announced his decision to return to the Wu'an Sect, as promised to Shangguan Xi, to manage its affairs, suggesting they might never meet again. Jinxia encouraged him, expressing her belief that he would lead the Wu'an Sect to greater heights. After Jinxia departed, Xie Xiao shed tears, eating the pancakes and reluctantly wishing her happiness, though still convinced Jinxia should have been his.
Yan Shifan discussed Huang Yu's imprisonment with an associate, confirming his satisfaction that Huang Yu was now jailed and would not be released, explaining that Huang Yu's downfall stemmed from giving him a fake "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" painting. Yan Shifan also made it clear he would not allow Yang Mo, whom the Emperor had just appointed, to return to the capital, preferring to keep him at the border.
Lin Ling presented Jinxia with a newly made dress and a beauty powder called "Seven White Powder," meticulously explaining its ingredients and benefits for whitening and beauty. She expressed her desire to completely transform Jinxia's appearance, even offering to wash her hair with egg white.
Jinxia, uncomfortable with the pampering, politely declined, citing her busy schedule with cases and using an urgent meeting with Lu Yi as an excuse to leave, while Lin Ling advised her to walk like a lady. Lu Yi then led Jinxia to see an "interesting" animal. Jinxia, full of curiosity, guessed it was alive, had fur, and four legs. Lu Yi confirmed it was the White Deer, which Wu Shouxu had captured without any wounds.
Wu Shouxu intended to offer the deer to the Emperor by writing a memorial, but Lu Yi advised him that for the Emperor to truly cherish such a unique gift, the memorial itself needed to be of "great literary grace." Inspired by this, Wu Shouxu wrote a beautifully crafted "White Deer Memorial" that captivated the Emperor. The Emperor praised Wu Shouxu's merit and ordered Lu Yi to escort the White Deer to the capital.
Upon receiving the imperial edict, Lu Yi informed Yang Chengwan and Jinxia about their imminent return to the capital. Jinxia was overjoyed, reflecting on her significant gains during the journey and playfully asking Lu Yi about his. He confessed that his greatest gain was her. Jinxia, blushing, then expressed her regret at not having found her lost family during the trip.
Xie Xiao bade Jinxia farewell with a "brother's hug," then sternly warned Lu Yi that if he ever mistreated Jinxia, he would be the first to take her back, a challenge Lu Yi confidently dismissed.
Yang Yue promised Shangguan Xi that after they returned to the capital and prepared the betrothal presents, he would go to Yangzhou to propose and come with the matchmaker, urging her to take care of herself and wait for him while she took care of Xie Xiao. Lin Ling decided to accompany Lu Yi's group to the capital, declining Shangguan Xi's offer to stay as the Wu'an Sect's doctor, while Mr. Beggar declared he would go wherever Lin Ling went.
The group then set off for the capital. Meanwhile, Luo Wenlong returned to the capital and reported to Yan Shifan that he had thoroughly burned all files concerning Yan Shifan's dealings with Mao Haifeng in Hangzhou, ensuring no trace remained for Lu Yi to uncover. He reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to Yan Shifan, even recounting how he endured torture from Qi Weigang's wife without revealing anything.
Upon their arrival in the capital, Lu Yi, in his impressive Embroidered Uniform Guards attire, escorted the White Deer. Jinxia, awestruck, commented on the grandeur of the Embroidered Uniform Guards, to which Lu Yi jokingly corrected her, stating that it was "someone of the Embroidered Uniform Guards" who was particularly impressive. Jinxia invited Lin Ling to stay at her home, an offer Lin Ling gratefully accepted.
Yang Yue, however, subtly cautioned Lin Ling about Jinxia's mother, Mrs. Yuan, hinting that she was no ordinary person to deal with. Jinxia reassured Lin Ling that her mother would be fond of her. Yang Yue also arranged for Mr. Beggar to stay at Yang Chengwan's home. As Lu Yi entered the palace, he encountered Huang Yu's sons, Huang Shizhen and his brother, tearfully pleading for their father's innocence and begging Lu Yi for assistance.
Lu Yi ordered them to be taken away to prevent them from startling the White Deer. Jinxia brought Lin Ling to her home, where Mrs. Yuan was selling tofu. Mrs. Yuan expressed her heartfelt joy at Jinxia's return after months away. Jinxia introduced Lin Ling as a kind doctor she met in Yangzhou, a friend of her master Yang Chengwan, who would be staying with them. Mrs. Yuan warmly welcomed Lin Ling, admiring her beauty.
In the palace, Lu Yi met Lan Qingxuan, who enthusiastically spoke of his fulfilling life, including how he playfully mocked treacherous officials under the guise of gods, thanks to the Emperor's trust. Lan Qingxuan then shed light on Huang Yu's predicament, explaining that Yan Shifan sought to eliminate Huang Yu because of a fake painting he had received.
He detailed how Huang Yu's sons had futilely pleaded at Yan Song's mansion, with Yan Song outwardly promising help but secretly forcing the Court of Judicial Review to ensure Huang Yu's death. Lan Qingxuan also noted that no one dared to intervene on behalf of the Huang brothers, due to the formidable power of Yan Song's faction.
News of Lin Ling residing at Jinxia's house quickly reached Yan Shifan, who, pleased that the "big fish" had come to him, confirmed that his renovated mansion, fully equipped, was ready for her. During an audience with the Emperor, Lu Yi humbly responded to questions about his contributions to the Cen Harbor battle, disclaiming credit and attributing any success to the soldiers. The Emperor praised Lu Yi's modesty, acknowledging his merits, and commended Lu Ting for raising such a son.
At Jinxia's home, Mrs. Yuan served doufunao to Jinxia and Lin Ling. Mrs. Yuan's inquisitive nature led her to ask Lin Ling about her origins in Fujian, her purpose in coming to the capital (to seek her family), and her marital status. Jinxia interjected, explaining that her mother, though kind-hearted, spoke without much thought due to her lack of formal education. Lin Ling reassured Mrs. Yuan that she did not mind.
Meanwhile, Lu Ting directly asked Lu Yi if he was behind Wu Shouxu's impressive White Deer memorial. Lu Yi admitted to offering a "tip" and expressed his frustration over the unfair impeachment of brave commanders like Yu Dayong and Qi Weigang, viewing his advice as a measure to protect the people of the southeast from pirates.
Lu Ting advised Lu Yi to stay out of official affairs, but Lu Yi disagreed, stating that everyone's destiny was linked to the factional struggles within the government. Soon after, Lu Yi and Lu Ting encountered Yan Shifan. Yan Shifan greeted Lu Yi, inquiring about the White Deer's journey.
He then instructed Lu Yi to promptly investigate Huang Yu and submit the case files to the Court of Judicial Review, so that the Ministry of Justice could handle it, and Huang Yu's sons would no longer disturb the Emperor's tranquility with their pleas.
