Wei Wuxian, worried that Lan Wangji might be heading off alone to search for the Yin Iron, pondered their shared discovery of the relic while talking to a group of white rabbits he had secretly kept. His Senior Sister Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng arrived, amused to see him with the animals. Jiang Cheng teased Wei Wuxian, questioning why a grown man would keep rabbits and even suggested eating them, which horrified Wei Wuxian.

Jiang Yanli considered taking a rabbit back to Lotus Pier but decided against it, not wanting to separate it from its family. Shortly after they departed, Lan Wangji arrived at the hidden spot, observing the rabbits thoughtfully. That night, as Lan Xichen meditated, Wen Chao unexpectedly appeared, demanding to know if the Lan clan's back hill held any treasures, citing information from Wen Qing. Lan Xichen explained it was merely the burial ground of their ancestors.

Unmoved, Wen Chao grew belligerent. Pointing out that Lan Wangji had just departed alone, he threatened his safety and demanded that Lan Xichen promptly surrender the Yin Iron to ensure the survival of the Gusu Lan clan. After Wen Chao left, a worried Lan Xichen could only silently wish for his brother's safety. The next morning, Jiang Cheng discovered Wei Wuxian had left without a word and became furious.

Jiang Fengmian, however, seemed resigned, assuring Jiang Cheng that Wei Wuxian understood the gravity of situations and must have left for an urgent reason, deciding they should return to Lotus Pier first. Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian caught up with Lan Wangji descending the mountain. Wei Wuxian expressed his frustration that Lan Wangji had abandoned their joint mission, humorously suggesting Lan Wangji was afraid Wei Wuxian would steal his show. Lan Wangji simply dismissed his comments as "boring."

To keep Lan Wangji from leaving him behind again, Wei Wuxian playfully stuck a self-created talisman on his back, designed to keep them within a short distance of each other. During their squabble, Lan Wangji sensed an unusual stir from the Yin Iron he carried, indicating another fragment might be nearby. Back in Lotus Pier, Jiang Cheng, worried for Wei Wuxian's safety, secretly packed his belongings and prepared to leave.

Jiang Yanli, aware of his intentions, simply cautioned him to be careful on his journey, making no effort to stop him. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, now accompanied by Nie Huaisang whom they encountered, arrived at a bustling market. They learned the renowned yet reclusive Lady Florist had suddenly extended invitations to cultivators for a poetry gathering, promising to personally host anyone with elegance and talent.

Nie Huaisang excitedly recounted tales of the Lady Florist, while Wei Wuxian playfully teased him for remembering such anecdotes but failing at his academic studies. As colorful papers fluttered down, Nie Huaisang marveled at Lan Wangji's unparalleled elegance. Wei Wuxian sarcastically agreed with the praise, joking that Lan Wangji looked so formal in all white, as if he were dressed for a funeral. Upon returning to their inn, they discovered a Dire Owl feather, confirming Wen Chao's presence.

Wei Wuxian deduced that a fragment of the Yin Iron had corrupted a leading peony, causing it to mutate and imprison the true Lady Florist. The imposter, he explained, was using the poetry gathering as a ruse to lure cultivators and locate other Yin Iron fragments. Nie Huaisang was astonished by the Yin Iron's terrifying power, making him wary of the fragment Lan Wangji possessed.

Elsewhere, Wen Qing reported to Wen Chao, relaying an order for them to assist Xue Yang in Yueyang. Wen Chao disdainfully dismissed Xue Yang as unworthy of his help. He accused Wen Qing of trying to protect Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, suggesting she had grown attached to them.

Wen Chao threatened the safety of Wen Qing's clan if she did not comply, declaring that obtaining Lan Wangji's Yin Iron, combined with the one from the Lady Florist, would secure a greater contribution than Xue Yang's. He also ominously noted that Dafan Mountain was Wen Qing's birthplace, hinting that Wei Wuxian's group would pass through there, and ordered one of his men to "take care of that man-eating monster" on the mountain.

Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng encountered Wen Qing at an inn. After a brief, tense exchange, Wen Qing covertly warned Jiang Cheng that Wei Wuxian was in danger at Dafan Mountain. Taking her words to heart, Jiang Cheng promptly left. Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and Nie Huaisang arrived at Dafan Mountain. They found an old woman muttering incoherently about a "Dancing Heavenly Maiden" who snatches souls.

Wei Wuxian found the atmosphere unsettling as the old woman led them to a structure she called the Tiannv Temple. Inside, they found a statue of the so-called maiden. Nie Huaisang dismissed the legend, viewing it as an ordinary, albeit ugly, statue. An old man they encountered reiterated the warnings, explaining that the statue was originally a spiritual stone that took on a human-like form.

Twenty years prior, it began snatching spirits and was eventually suppressed by a "great clan leader," though many lives were lost. When pressed, the old man claimed not to remember the clan's identity, but Wei Wuxian shrewdly suggested it was the Wen clan of Qishan. The old man neither confirmed nor denied it, simply inviting them to stay if they wished to understand everything. Despite Nie Huaisang's unease, they decided to spend the night in the temple.

Later, Nie Huaisang's scream from a nightmare woke the others. To their horror, the Dancing Heavenly Maiden statue suddenly came to life, lumbering towards them with a chilling smile. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian fought back, with Wei Wuxian even joking that the statue had a crush on Lan Wangji. They managed to seal the colossal statue, but their relief was short-lived. Outside, villagers, transformed into soulless puppets, surged towards the temple.

Dire Owls circled overhead, indicating the Wen clan's involvement. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji realized their seals were useless against the puppets, and a chilling thought dawned on them: they had fallen into a trap.
