The battle at Nevernight was exceptionally brutal. Jiang Yanli tragically died while trying to protect Wei Wuxian, and in their grief and anger, the sect leaders and cultivators heaped scorn upon him, vowing to kill him to avenge their losses. They accused him of causing the deaths of Jiang Fengmian, his wife, and now his senior sister, declaring his sins unforgivable.

As they closed in, clamoring for his death and labeling him a heartless and crooked cultivator, Wei Wuxian, cornered and filled with a desire for vengeance, slowly raised his flute, Chenqing. As the haunting melody drifted through the air, he spat out a mouthful of blood. Seeing him wounded, the sect leaders surged forward, eager to seize his Stygian Tiger Amulet.

Wei Wuxian sneered and leaped to the highest point, mocking them that if they wanted the amulet so badly, they should take it with their own strength. Lan Wangji watched with a worried gaze, urging Wei Wuxian to stop. Ignoring the plea, Wei Wuxian tossed the Stygian Tiger Amulet into the crowd. Driven by greed, the cultivators fought frantically, even turning on each other. Wei Wuxian watched this ruthless world with a cynical, sorrowful smile, no longer wishing to live.

He then let himself fall from the cliff. In that critical moment, Lan Wangji rushed forward and grabbed Wei Wuxian's arm. Touched yet resigned, Wei Wuxian told Lan Wangji to let him go. Lan Wangji refused, insisting that Wei Wuxian return with him. However, a distraught Jiang Cheng, holding a blood-stained sword, approached. Unable to accept Jiang Yanli's death and the scene of carnage, he thrust his sword forward with a cry of anguish.

Though the blade struck the rock beside them, the act caused Wei Wuxian to resolutely break free from Lan Wangji's grasp and plunge into the abyss, leaving no trace. Sixteen years later, Wei Wuxian was forcibly resurrected through Mo Xuanyu's body-sacrificing curse. Mo Xuanyu’s spirit explained that he had been driven to it by constant bullying and begged Wei Wuxian to avenge him by killing his tormentors.

Wei Wuxian later awakened to find himself in Lan Wangji's room in the Cloud Recesses. Lan Wangji, who was calmly playing the guqin, had already recognized him. Lan Wangji revealed that sixteen years ago, Jiang Cheng had insisted on searching for Wei Wuxian at the bottom of the cliff but only found bones. Three years after that, Lan Wangji himself had gone to search, but even the bones were gone.

As Wei Wuxian wandered freely through Cloud Recesses, passing familiar railings and flowers, he recalled laughing with Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng. He felt a profound sense of wistfulness, as if a lifetime had passed. His return was a rebirth, but the world had changed beyond recognition, and they could never go back. Wei Wuxian approached the Library Pavilion, reminiscing with a warm smile about being punished to copy the Lan sect rules and playfully teasing Lan Wangji.

Following a small path, he came upon fluffy white rabbits in the back mountains, realizing Lan Wangji had kept them all these years, despite his earlier pretense of disliking them. As he continued on, he was startled to find Lan Wangji bathing, his bare back covered in glaring whip scars. Seeing Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji quickly dressed but refused to explain why he, a model disciple, had received such a severe punishment.

At that moment, a junior disciple reported that the sword spirit summoned in the antechamber was out of control. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji rushed to find Lan Qiren unconscious after spitting blood. The two quickly played their dizi and guqin in unison, finally suppressing the sword spirit. Wei Wuxian noticed the sword was tainted with the energy of the Stygian Tiger Amulet.

When he picked it up, an ear-piercing scream echoed in his mind, forcing him to drop it in disbelief. Still wearing a mask, Wei Wuxian later listened as a concerned Lan Sizhui theorized that the sword spirit was deliberately planted by someone with ulterior motives.

The next day, Wei Wuxian discussed the matter with Lan Wangji, stating that since he had destroyed the Stygian Tiger Amulet by shattering it, it would be impossible to reassemble unless someone used a piece of Yin Iron to forge a new one from the fragments. This led both of them to suspect Xue Yang, a vicious cultivator who had disappeared with a piece of Yin Iron.

Wei Wuxian also theorized that with the Yin Iron sword from the Xuanwu Cave, there could be at least five Yin Iron pieces in total. He pointed out the coincidence of the sword spirit and his own reappearance at Mo Manor, concluding that he was the target of this entire scheme. Following the direction indicated by the sword spirit, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji set their course northwest.

As they traveled, the spirit's resentful energy grew stronger, confirming they were on the right path. They soon arrived in the region of Qinghe. In the market, Wei Wuxian encountered a charlatan selling crude portraits of the Yiling Patriarch. By coincidence, Jin Ling was also there. Upon hearing Wei Wuxian's name, Jin Ling became enraged, kicking over the charlatan’s stall.

Wei Wuxian shook his head, lamenting that Jin Ling had inherited the worst traits of Jiang Cheng and Jin Zixuan—arrogance and a bad temper—while possessing none of his mother Jiang Yanli's virtues. He considered teaching Jin Ling a lesson, but his plans were cut short when Jin Ling released his spiritual dog, Fairy, sending the terrified Wei Wuxian running.
