Seven days later, a pale and clearly unwell Wei Wuxian, clutching his abdomen, waited for Jiang Cheng in an Yiling teahouse. However, he was ambushed by Wen Chao and Wang Lingjiao. Wen Chao cruelly stepped on Wei Wuxian’s hand, taunting him about his arrogance in the Slaughter Xuanwu Cave and demanding he kneel. Wei Wuxian defiantly retorted that he only heard a dog barking, not a human voice, enraging Wen Chao, who ordered his men to beat him.

Wang Lingjiao reminded Wen Chao of his promise to sever one of Wei Wuxian’s arms, but Wen Chao changed his mind, deciding to have Wen Zhuliu first crush Wei Wuxian’s golden core, wanting to hear him scream as Jiang Cheng did, before chopping off his arm. Wei Wuxian, unyielding, dared them to use their cruelest methods, vowing to become a ferocious ghost after death and haunt the entire Wen Clan.

Wang Lingjiao dismissed his threat, claiming gentry disciples couldn't become ghosts due to soul-calming ceremonies, but Wei Wuxian countered that as a servant’s son, he never had such a ceremony. Annoyed, Wang Lingjiao used a hot iron to brand his old chest wound, causing it to bleed, but Wei Wuxian endured silently. Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng awoke on a lush mountain, shaken by a vivid dream of Lotus Cove.

He saw his parents and sister, Jiang Yanli, in happier times, only for the dream to turn into a nightmare of his mother's eyes bleeding, Lotus Cove burning, and Wen Zhuliu striking him, destroying his golden core. He awoke to find his spiritual power restored, believing an Immortal had saved him, unaware that Wei Wuxian had sacrificed his own golden core for him. Back in Yiling, Wen Chao had Wei Wuxian dragged away.

Civilians nearby spoke of the Wen clan’s tyranny and the destruction of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan. Wen Chao revealed they were above the Burial Mounds, a notorious place in Yiling that was both a mountain of corpses and an ancient battlefield, perpetually shrouded in dense resentful energy. He menacingly explained that no living person who entered the place, body or soul, ever returned. Laughing, Wen Chao then pushed Wei Wuxian into the abyss.

Wei Wuxian screamed as he fell, quickly enveloped by a dark mist before hitting the ground unconscious. Imprisoned in Yiling for aiding Wei Wuxian, Wen Qing cradled a bruised and battered Wen Ning. Despite his injuries, he only cared about Wei Wuxian's well-being and whether Jiang Cheng had regained his golden core. Unbeknownst to them, Wei Wuxian struggled to awaken amidst the darkness of the Burial Mounds.

A fierce wind howled, carrying countless ghostly screams and voices that called his name, asking if he desired revenge and urging him to join them. Not far away, he spotted the black sword he had pulled from the Slaughter Xuanwu. With bloodshot eyes, he painstakingly made his way towards the sword as the cacophony of spectral voices grew louder, all whispering of vengeance.

With a final surge of strength, Wei Wuxian grasped the hilt and plunged the sword into the ground, his eyes filled with a chilling, murderous intent, devoid of the bright youth he once was. Three months passed. In a Qishan teahouse, a group of Wen clan subordinates drunkenly boasted about exterminating the Jiang clan and brutally torturing Wei Wuxian. Suddenly, the grim-faced Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng burst in. Lan Wangji demanded to know Wei Wuxian’s whereabouts.

Terrified, the men revealed that Wei Wuxian had been thrown into the Burial Mounds, his body and soul believed to be utterly destroyed. Both Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji were aghast. Later, other Lan clan members found Wei Wuxian’s sheathed sword, but it had sealed itself, and no one could draw it. Meanwhile, a restless Wang Lingjiao, plagued by nightmares of a vengeful Wei Wuxian, nervously spoke with Wen Chao.

Annoyed, Wen Chao dismissed her fears, pointing out that no one had ever returned from the Burial Mounds. He was preoccupied with a letter, frustrated by the ongoing "Sunshot Campaign." After Wen Chao was summoned away by a spiritual message from his father, Wang Lingjiao, left alone and trembling, picked up the crumpled letter. It detailed the gathering of the great clans in Lanling to launch the campaign against the Wen clan, noting that Qinghe had already fallen.

The Sunshot Campaign swiftly gained momentum. Nie Mingjue, the Red Blade Master, displayed immense valor by beheading Wen Xu, a son of Wen Ruohan. Jin Zixuan escorted Jiang Yanli to Qinghe, where she was reunited with Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji. Jiang Yanli rejoiced at seeing her brother but was filled with renewed anxiety upon learning that Wei Wuxian's whereabouts remained unknown.

Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji both requested to be assigned to the Yiling front, a vital and well-defended fortress for the Wen clan. Nie Mingjue granted their request, instructing them to depart the next day and avoid main roads to maintain secrecy. During their meeting, Nie Mingjue also inquired about Meng Yao, surprising Jin Zixuan, who stated that Meng Yao was not in the Jin clan’s service and had not been seen since their brief encounter at the Lan clan.

That night, Jiang Yanli expressed her worry to Jiang Cheng, who promised to bring Wei Wuxian back. As the war raged on, Wang Lingjiao, hearing that the Wen's Indoctrination Bureau had fallen, decided to flee rather than be dragged down with Wen Chao. She went to retrieve her hidden valuables, but upon opening her jewelry box, she shrieked in horror: instead of jewels, a pair of bloody eyeballs stared back at her.

Frantically, she tore a protective talisman from her door and stuck it to her chest. After a moment of terror, she re-examined the box and found her gold and jewels inside. As she clutched them, a chilling realization dawned that something was terribly wrong.
