When the disciples arrived in Qishan, Wen Chao immediately declared that they must abide by Qishan's rules, beginning with surrendering their swords. He claimed this was to avoid disturbing his father, the Chief Cultivator, and that cultivators should not carry weapons during indoctrination. Many disciples protested, asserting that a cultivator never parts with his sword. Jin Zixuan openly refused to comply.

Wen Chao, asserting his authority, declared that such disobedient disciples were precisely why the indoctrination was necessary, to prevent future challenges to the Wen clan's power. He then ordered the confiscation of all swords. Though restrained by Jiang Cheng, Wei Wuxian surrendered his sword, reassuring his brother he would not cause trouble. Jin Zixuan, however, remained defiant, stating that Jin disciples and their swords are one.

Just as Wen Chao ordered him to be taken away, a Jin disciple named Mianmian intervened. She pleaded for Jin Zixuan's pardon, citing the good relations between their clans. Charmed by her words and appearance, Wen Chao relented but still demanded Jin Zixuan's sword. Urged by another disciple to endure the humiliation for their clan's sake, Jin Zixuan reluctantly complied.

Wen Chao then warned that any further defiance would be met with no mercy and announced that each disciple would receive "The Quintessence of Wens," a book of the Wen ancestors' glorious deeds, which they were required to memorize for daily recitations under threat of punishment. Wei Wuxian sarcastically muttered that he would memorize it to see just how disgusting the Wen clan could be.

Elsewhere, Wen Qing returned to Wen Ning, who asked if Wei Wuxian had arrived for the indoctrination. Recalling Wen Ruohan's threats, she sternly warned her brother to stay away from Wei Wuxian, insisting they were not of the same world. Wen Ning protested, reminding her that Wei Wuxian had saved his life.

Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian sardonically read a passage from the Wen book to Jiang Cheng about executing those who abuse their power, joking that Qishan would soon have more severed heads than pig heads. Jiang Cheng expressed concern for Wen Qing and noted that for the vindictive Wen clan to single out Lan Wangji for indoctrination, something terrible must have happened. The next day, when no one volunteered to recite, Wen Chao called upon Lan Wangji, who stated he could not.

Wen Chao then called on Wei Wuxian, who eagerly volunteered. Instead of reciting the Wen doctrines, he recited a long list of the Lan clan's strict rules, to the amusement of the other disciples. Enraged, Wen Chao accused him of seeking death and ordered him, along with Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan, to be taken to the vegetable garden to carry dung as punishment.

While performing the task, Wei Wuxian tried to discreetly ask Lan Wangji about the Wen clan's visit to Cloud Recesses and the Yin Iron. Wen Chao arrived, demanding to know what they were whispering about. Wei Wuxian quipped that the garden's stench reminded him of Wen Chao himself. Furious, Wen Chao confronted him. Boasting that the Wen clan now possessed three shards of the Yin Iron, he credited a "wise" Lan Wangji for surrendering his piece.

He then accused Wei Wuxian of hiding the final shard and ordered him taken to the dungeon. Wei Wuxian defiantly retorted that a dungeon would be a welcome respite. Lan Wangji was unable to prevent Wei Wuxian's removal. From a distance, Wen Ning watched in distress until Wen Qing pulled him away.

Lan Wangji confronted the guards to no avail, then found Wen Qing and asked if Wen Ruohan had been harsh with her, to which she simply replied that she would do her best. Wen Chao led Wei Wuxian to a dark cell, taunting him with the "special" creature inside. He locked Wei Wuxian in with a ferocious, giant dog, knowing it was his greatest fear. As Wei Wuxian panicked, a bufotoxin needle shot from outside, incapacitating the beast.

Wen Ning secretly entered, bringing medicine. He revealed the grim news: Wen Xu had burned down much of Cloud Recesses, and because the final Yin Iron shard was not found, he had brutally beaten and broken Lan Wangji's leg. Wei Wuxian was horrified and enraged. He urged Wen Ning to give the medicine to Lan Wangji instead and to leave quickly before being discovered. The next morning, sensing Wen Chao's approach, Wei Wuxian removed the needle.

The dog awoke, but was too weak to attack. Wen Chao entered, annoyed that his pet had failed, and brought Wei Wuxian back to the group. Wei Wuxian acted unbothered, joking about his "glorious" experience and begging for food. Wen Chao then made several announcements: Cloud Recesses was now under Qishan's jurisdiction; the insubordinate Nie clan was being suppressed; and the compliant Jin clan would be spared as long as they caused no trouble.

Finally, he lamented that Jiang Fengmian was a coward hiding in Lotus Cove, expressing his eagerness to pay a visit. Later, Wen Qing confronted Wen Ning, having discovered the missing medicine and his absence the previous night. She threatened to confine him, but he tearfully reminded her of their family's principle to repay kindness, as Wei Wuxian was his savior. Wen Qing emotionally replied that Wen Ning was her only living family, revealing her deep fear for his safety.

Soon after, Wen Chao received a report about bizarre, monstrous events on Mount Muxi. He decided to lead an expedition, coldly stating that with "so many human shields," he had nothing to fear. As the disciples were marched towards the mountain, they complained about being used as a suicide squad without their swords. Wei Wuxian noticed Lan Wangji struggling, his leg injury clearly worsening. Despite Jiang Cheng’s warning to mind their own business, Wei Wuxian insisted on helping. He approached Lan Wangji and offered to carry him, but was repeatedly rebuffed with a terse, "I am fine."
