The Romance of Tiger and Rose Recap
Episode 1 Recap
Huayuan City was a land where women held power, while men ruled in Xuanhu City. The two cities had long been adversaries, and after a fierce battle, Xuanhu was defeated. As a result, Xuanhu's Young Master, Han Shuo, was sent to marry into Huayuan City. Han Shuo was a handsome and skilled warrior, admired by all who met him, but he suffered from a congenital heart disease, destined not to live past twenty.
As he was already nineteen, many bystanders in Huayuan City lamented his short lifespan, deeming his arrival unlucky. Suddenly, the Third Princess, Chen Qianqian, rode her horse wildly through the streets and crashed into Han Shuo’s procession. Han Shuo's true purpose in marrying into Huayuan City was to obtain the Dragon Bone, a secret treasure of Huayuan renowned for curing all ailments.
To achieve this, he had orchestrated a "hero saves the beauty" scenario, intending to meet and charm the Second Princess, Chen Chuchu, and then manipulate her to acquire the Dragon Bone. However, his plan went awry when Chen Qianqian intervened. Han Shuo inadvertently saved her instead of Chen Chuchu. Chen Qianqian was immediately smitten by his appearance and declared she would marry him the very next day.
Her attendant objected, reminding her that a marriage required the City Owner's approval and that forcefully taking a husband was against custom. Chen Qianqian, known for her unreasonable and unrestrained nature, dismissed the concerns, asserting that she had always gotten what she wanted and would seek her mother’s permission. Han Shuo feigned a severe heart attack, with his attendant pleading for Chen Qianqian to reconsider, citing his terminal illness.
However, Chen Qianqian remained unfazed, instructing her guards to send him to her mansion while he was still alive. Meanwhile, in the modern world, screenwriter Chen Xiaoqian struggled to make ends meet, relying on money for her script. Her historical drama, "The Tiger Sniffing the Rose," was picked up for production, but the lead actor, Mr. Han, raised concerns about the character of Han Shuo.
He questioned the sudden romantic development between Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu, arguing that love required equality, which was absent in the contrasting patriarchal and matriarchal societies of Xuanhu and Huayuan. Mr. Han even labeled his character a "male chauvinist" and implied that Chen Xiaoqian, never having been in a relationship, lacked the experience to write authentic love stories. Initially enraged by Mr. Han's remarks, Chen Xiaoqian’s mood changed when she received a substantial payment for her script.
Motivated by the money, she diligently revised the script day and night, determined to prove her professional skills. After finally completing the perfect ending, she collapsed from exhaustion. When she awoke, she found herself not in her apartment, but inexplicably transported into her own script, embodying the character of the Third Princess Chen Qianqian. To her horror, Chen Qianqian was a notorious, extravagant, and unlearned character, destined to be poisoned by Han Shuo on her wedding day in Episode 3.
She realized she had become the cannon fodder she had created. An attendant then arrived with an embroidered wedding dress, confirming her worst fears: she was in the third episode, and it was her wedding day. She vehemently rejected the dress, calling it a mourning garment, and refused to marry Han Shuo. Back in the script's reality, Han Shuo deduced that someone was intentionally interfering with his plan to connect with Chen Chuchu.
He decided to adapt, instructing his subordinate to allow the marriage to proceed. His new plan was to poison Chen Qianqian that night to eliminate her as an obstacle. He would then proceed with his original strategy: support Chen Chuchu’s rise to power, use her to secure the Dragon Bone to cure his heart disease, and then light the fire beacons on the lookout tower to signal Xuanhu’s army for a full-scale invasion of Huayuan City.
He ordered the execution of those who botched the horse incident as a warning, though his aide mistakenly killed the horse instead of the people involved. Chen Qianqian (Chen Xiaoqian) overheard her attendant, Zi Rui, disparaging Han Shuo as a "worthless person" from a "small city at the border." She quickly reprimanded Zi Rui, warning him that Han Shuo was far more dangerous than he seemed.
She also considered whether dying as Chen Qianqian would allow her to return to her own world. Anxious to get to the "poisoned wine" part of the plot and return home, Chen Qianqian (Chen Xiaoqian) began canceling all the elaborate wedding ceremonies, including the flower parade, the sacrifice to Heaven, and the meeting with the City Owner. She instructed Zi Rui to tell everyone she was "burning with anxiety" and "eager to consummate" the marriage with Han Shuo.
This news reached Chen Chuchu, who, despite the gossip about her sister's impatience, hoped the marriage would finally make Chen Qianqian more mature. Minister Pei, Chen Qianqian's childhood fiancé, also heard the news and dismissively accepted the cancellations, noting Chen Qianqian's lack of regard for tradition.
The City Owner initially found her daughter's actions unruly but ultimately allowed it, hoping that Han Shuo’s fragile health and Chen Qianqian’s impulsive nature might lead to Han Shuo’s early demise, solving a potential problem. In the bridal chamber, Han Shuo’s attendant recited the "seven grounds for lawfully divorcing a man" in Huayuan City, which Han Shuo already knew, and explained the custom of the veil: the woman who removed it would claim him for life.
Despite his disdain for Huayuan's customs, which inverted Xuanhu's gender roles, Han Shuo agreed to comply. However, when the attendant attempted to apply Gecko cinnabar to his arm as a mark of chastity, Han Shuo erupted in fury, feeling it was an intolerable insult. At that moment, Chen Qianqian (Chen Xiaoqian) burst in and stopped the ritual, arguing it was pointless to mark him with temporary cinnabar. She then approached Han Shuo, ready for the next step of the wedding.
Han Shuo suggested they drink to celebrate their marriage. Remembering her script, Chen Qianqian (Chen Xiaoqian) knew the wine was poisoned and eagerly drank, hoping to die and return to her world. However, Han Shuo feigned a cough and subtly swapped their cups. He offered her wine again, but he faked another cough, spilling some. Assuming he was having trouble because his veil was still on, Chen Qianqian reached out and removed it.
To her shock, the face beneath the veil was Mr. Han, the actor from her real world. Stunned, she confronted him, accusing him of being trapped in the script with her and of poisoning the wine. She declared that if she died, she would take him with her. She then called Zi Rui, dramatically accusing Han Shuo of attempted murder and ordering Han Shuo’s entire family line to be executed if she died.
Since she felt no ill effects from the wine or food, she suspected Mr. Han had poisoned his lips. To confirm her theory, she boldly kissed him. Immediately, her tongue grew numb, her vision blurred, and she felt the poison taking hold. As her head swam, she collapsed into Han Shuo's arms, weakly telling him that his poison had a strong, delayed effect. Han Shuo, now genuinely alarmed, quickly called for a doctor.
Episode 2 Recap
Chen Qianqian awoke to find herself still surrounded by Zi Rui and her attendants, a realization that filled her with dismay. She believed she was trapped in a dream and even suspected Han Shuo of altering her script. Having attempted suicide return to reality, her failure now left her anxious about the impending production start and her unfinished screenplay.
She recalled that in her original story, Chen Chuchu was destined to overcome great hardships to ascend the throne, with auspicious signs and an open heavenly gate marking her coronation. Qianqian suddenly speculated that her only way back to her own world was to witness this event, which in turn meant she needed Han Shuo's assistance to help Chen Chuchu become the City Owner.
Immediately, Qianqian sought out Han Shuo, only to discover he had been imprisoned and was slated for execution that very day. In his prison cell, Han Shuo was seething, wishing he could capture Chen Qianqian and her mother to subject them to a gruesome death by a thousand cuts. However, he was forced to restrain his anger for the sake of obtaining the Dragon Bone, a rare Huayuan City treasure crucial to his plans.
Qianqian rushed to the City Owner, pleading for Han Shuo's release and proposing that he marry Chen Chuchu instead. The City Owner flatly refused, expressing her suspicion that Han Shuo, as Xuanhu City's sole heir, harbored ulterior motives for marrying into Huayuan City. Despite Qianqian’s attempts to reassure her that Han Shuo had no intention of poisoning her, the City Owner questioned why Qianqian, usually resilient to alcohol, had collapsed after just one drink the previous night.
Qianqian, desperate, blurted out a lie, claiming she was pregnant with Han Shuo's child. Though angered by Qianqian's reckless disregard for her noble reputation, the City Owner, unwilling to chastise her beloved daughter too harshly, conceded. She sent Sangqi to tell Han Shuo that he would be pardoned and released if he acknowledged the child. She also strictly warned Qianqian to keep the alleged pregnancy a secret until enough months had passed.
Han Shuo was subsequently released from prison and showered with various gifts, predominantly green-colored items, including a jade scepter, a peacock feather fan, green mandarin duck silk, green tea, glazed bottles, and a gilded jadeite headdress. Sangqi explained that in Huayuan City, receiving a green headdress was a commendation for a husband being virtuous, amiable, and generous. Han Shuo, however, interpreted the "green" gifts as a blatant insult, signifying he was a cuckold.
He struggled to contain his fury, particularly when Qianqian brazenly told him not to nitpick, as the child would not bear his surname anyway. She went on to emphasize that everything they used—the house, the daily expenses, the servants—belonged to her, and since he couldn't even help deliver the baby, he had no right to complain. Han Shuo, shocked by the Huayuan custom of children not taking their father's surname, could only express his outrage.
Determined to avenge his perceived humiliation and remove the "bastard" child, Han Shuo secretly ordered his subordinate to proceed with their original plan: poison Qianqian. The poison, designed to be ingested at noon and take effect at midnight, was placed in a specific "glazed plate." Unbeknownst to Han Shuo, Qianqian, remembering the original plot where she was poisoned, decided to counteract any such scheme.
When Han Shuo, as per Huayuan custom, began diligently serving her food during dinner, she grew suspicious. To ensure she wouldn't inadvertently eat the poisoned food, she ordered all the dishes to be served in glazed plates, believing this would make it impossible for Han Shuo to pinpoint the target. Han Shuo, realizing his subordinate had poisoned "a" glazed plate among many now being used, found himself in a predicament.
He had to diligently serve Qianqian every single dish, as she enthusiastically devoured the meal. Frustrated and unable to act, Han Shuo could only watch. Qianqian, still suspecting he was trying to poison her, eventually flipped the table in anger and declared she would go to the City Owner's mansion for dinner. Han Shuo's subordinate later explained that Qianqian's whimsical order to use all glazed plates had inadvertently foiled their carefully laid plan.
At the City Owner's mansion, while warning Qianqian about proper dietary restrictions for a pregnant woman, the City Owner noticed the intact gecko cinnabar on Qianqian's arm. This instantly exposed Qianqian's lie about being pregnant. Enraged, the City Owner chastised Qianqian for fabricating such an important matter for a mere prisoner and for disgracing her noble family.
Qianqian immediately fell to her knees, tearfully confessing her "love" for Han Shuo, claiming she had fallen for him at first sight and could not live without him. Softened by her daughter's display of affection, the City Owner, though still displeased, spared Han Shuo's life. She warned Qianqian to keep her husband in line and prevent him from causing trouble, or face consequences herself.
Feeling like she was "treading on thin ice" and viewing Han Shuo as a "time bomb," Qianqian resolved to push him towards Chen Chuchu to get the story back on track and reach the finale, thus enabling her return home. She summoned the city's top storytellers, her "predecessors," to discuss her story, using fruits as metaphors for her characters: a "banana" for Han Shuo, an "apple" for Chen Chuchu, and an "orange" for herself.
She explained that the "orange" (herself) was supposed to die on the wedding night, allowing the "banana" and "apple" (Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu) to fall in love. But now, the "orange" had survived. The storytellers offered various suggestions, including drastic plot twists or simply "removing" the "orange" from the story.
Qianqian rejected these "violent" and "simple and crude" ideas, suggesting a more "technical means"—a "hero saves beauty" or "beauty saves hero" scenario to spark Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu's romance. To execute this, Qianqian brought Han Shuo to Lin Qi's Music and Dance Academy, known for its male performers. She boasted about Han Shuo, prompting Lin Qi to challenge her to a competition to determine the most talented man in Huayuan City.
Qianqian confidently put Han Shuo forward, and Lin Qi countered with Su Mu, the academy's renowned male beauty. Qianqian found herself captivated by Su Mu's appearance, praising him openly, much to Han Shuo's annoyance. Su Mu performed on the Qin, while Han Shuo delivered a powerful sword dance, filling the courtyard with flying petals. Qianqian anxiously waited for Chen Chuchu to arrive. Suddenly, Han Shuo unexpectedly thrust his sword towards Qianqian.
Just in the nick of time, Chen Chuchu appeared, deflecting Han Shuo's blade and sternly reprimanding him for daring to attack Qianqian. Zi Rui quickly informed Han Shuo of Chen Chuchu's identity, prompting Han Shuo to quickly snatch Qianqian's fan to conceal his face. Qianqian tried to intervene, explaining to Chen Chuchu that she had forced Han Shuo into the competition, provoking his attack.
However, Chen Chuchu asserted that a husband should respect his wife and obey her completely, not resort to violence. She continued to fight Han Shuo, tearing his clothes in the process. At this moment, Pei Heng arrived and stopped the fight. Qianqian was momentarily stunned, recognizing him as her favorite character from her original script—Huayuan City's most handsome scholar and her former fiancé.
Pei Heng pulled Qianqian aside, scolding her for her unruly and willful behavior, for disrespecting their broken engagement, for forcibly marrying Han Shuo, and for then humiliating him by bringing him to the Music and Dance Academy and comparing him to the performers. Qianqian broke down, crying that she was lonely and helpless, with no family or friends, constantly "treading on thin ice," and that she had only made such "unwise decisions" out of a desperate desire to return home.
She even admitted to liking Pei Heng and apologized for her actions. Pei Heng was taken aback by her uncharacteristic apology. Overhearing Qianqian's apology and the entire humiliating spectacle, Han Shuo, consumed by rage, secretly ordered his subordinate to deploy archers to ensure Chen Qianqian would die of arrow wounds that very night.
Episode 3 Recap
Chen Qianqian, still grappling with her new reality in the script, decided to mend her strained relationship with Han Shuo after a reprimand from Pei Heng. She acknowledged that her previous actions, comparing Han Shuo to a Music and Dance Academy musician, were humiliating and genuinely apologized for her recklessness. She confided in Pei Heng, expressing how adrift she felt in this unfamiliar world, constantly fearing harm and desperate to return home, a feeling she realized Han Shuo must share.
Pei Heng was surprised by her changed demeanor and conceded to her plea not to be disappointed in her. His attendant, however, observed Qianqian's newfound softness and willingness to apologize for Pei Heng's sake, suggesting her feelings for him were deeper than previously thought and urged Pei Heng not to cancel their engagement. Meanwhile, Han Shuo had arranged assassins around his residence, ready to eliminate Chen Qianqian on a signal.
Unaware of the danger, Qianqian fortified her resolve, telling herself that this Han Shuo was different, and she could get along with him. She approached Han Shuo, who, still smarting from being publicly humiliated when his clothes were torn during a recent skirmish, coldly questioned her purpose. Qianqian reiterated her apology, admitting her actions were inconsiderate.
Han Shuo remained unconvinced, so Qianqian offered to make amends by removing her outer garment to be paraded in public, just as he had been exposed. Han Shuo, alarmed and remembering the hidden archers, quickly stopped her, reminding her that as his nominal wife, she couldn't appear in public like that. Qianqian then playfully threatened to remove another layer, prompting a panicked Han Shuo to wrap her in a quilt.
During their exchange, Han Shuo, initially criticizing her behavior, noticed the gecko cinnabar on her arm. He realized she had faked her pregnancy to save him from prison, an act that deeply touched him. Qianqian, in turn, downplayed her sacrifice, stating that reputation was less important than a life, and her own honor was not worth much anyway.
Following this, Qianqian proposed a "three-chapter agreement" to Han Shuo: in public, he would adhere to Huayuan City's rules and obey her, but in private, she would abide by Xuanhu City's customs and obey him, establishing a foundation of mutual respect. As Qianqian started to leave, Han Shuo suddenly remembered the assassins. He rushed out, using the quilt to shield her from a volley of arrows.
Qianqian's expression changed, indicating she knew what had just happened, but she chose not to confront him and swiftly departed. Later, reflecting on the original script, Qianqian recalled Han Shuo's ruthless nature and how he was destined to conquer Huayuan City and kill many, including her as the cannon fodder. Determined to survive and return to her own world, she consulted with local scriptwriters.
She explained her predicament using an analogy of an "orange" (herself) needing to avoid being killed by a "banana" (Han Shuo) who was powerful and vengeful, especially since the "orange" had previously caused him trouble. She revealed her unique advantage: she knew the entire story, including Han Shuo's schemes and how he would gain power and even medicine from the "apple" (Chen Chuchu).
The scriptwriters, now intrigued, advised her to use this foresight to "curry favor," protect, and help the "banana" to earn his trust and change his perception of her. Inspired, Qianqian proposed a scenario where Han Shuo would be meeting a spy, Chen Chuchu would ambush him, and Qianqian would intervene to save Han Shuo, thus earning his gratitude. To set her plan in motion, Qianqian sent two anonymous tip-offs.
One went to Han Shuo's subordinate, claiming a spy had Huayuan City's defense map and wanted to meet at the moat at midnight. The other went to Chen Chuchu, informing her of a Xuanhu City spy meeting at the same time and place. Zi Zhu urged Chuchu to seize this chance to gain favor with the City Owner, but Chuchu hesitated, considering Qianqian.
Concealed by the moat with her attendant Zi Rui, Qianqian outlined her strategy: she would claim to be the one meeting Han Shuo, dispelling any notion of a Xuanhu spy and making Han Shuo trust her as his savior. Zi Rui expressed concern about the potential punishment from the City Owner for such a fabricated plot, but Qianqian, confident in her mother's favoritism, dismissed his worries.
However, Han Shuo, having anticipated a trap from the suspicious tip-off, did not show up, instead planning to "use this trap and find the person behind it." Chen Chuchu's troops found no spy, only Chen Qianqian and Zi Rui. Chuchu questioned Qianqian's presence, who, flustered, admitted the person she was meeting hadn't arrived. Chuchu's attendants immediately accused Qianqian of colluding with the enemy, a capital offense.
Realizing Han Shuo had outsmarted her, Qianqian frantically changed her story, claiming she had also received a tip-off and came to catch the spies herself, before trying to leave by saying she was just admiring the moon. Chen Chuchu, however, deduced that Qianqian, despite her wild reputation, was too cowardly for treason. She suspected Han Shuo had used Qianqian as a pawn, vowing to uncover his schemes.
She decided not to report the full incident to the City Owner, but warned her subordinates to be vigilant. Back at his residence, Qianqian confronted Han Shuo, chastising his lack of integrity and accusing him of trying to frame her. Han Shuo coolly asked if she was referring to the moat incident, questioning how she knew Chuchu would be there to catch him.
Qianqian denied any malicious intent, claiming she rushed there out of concern for him, only to be tricked by his absence. Noticing her injury, Han Shuo inquired about it. Qianqian confirmed she was hurt saving him, emphasizing her loyalty and asking for his trust in return. She declared her sole motivation was to make him happy, promising to prove her usefulness through actions.
Han Shuo's attendant questioned Qianqian's trustworthiness, but Han Shuo dismissed his doubts, attributing Qianqian's unpredictable nature to her innocence. He reasoned that someone as guileless as Chen Qianqian, a "grass-bag," could not have orchestrated a plot involving a defense map and secret communication methods. Instead, he suspected the prudent Chen Chuchu, believing she sought to gain merit by causing conflict between the two cities.
His attendant then pondered why Qianqian would save them if she wasn't seeking military or financial gain. Han Shuo, with a touch of narcissism, concluded she was infatuated with him. He recalled how she seemingly fell for him after he saved her from a runaway horse, rationalizing her past confrontational actions as expressions of love and regret.
Han Shuo ultimately decided to shift his focus from Chen Chuchu to Chen Qianqian, believing Qianqian, being more favored by the City Owner, could be molded into a capable leader with his guidance. He found it more expedient to utilize Qianqian's apparent devotion rather than contending with Chen Chuchu's hostility. Meanwhile, the City Owner chastised Chen Chuchu for her handling of the moat incident, calling her incompetent for alerting the enemy and making it harder to catch them.
Chuchu admitted her negligence, confirming Han Shuo's uninvolvement. The City Owner attributed Chuchu's failure to over-eagerness and expressed concern over Xuanhu City sending a seemingly sickly Han Shuo, suspecting a deeper plot. She lamented Chuchu's carelessness, casting doubt on her suitability as successor. An attendant tried to defend Chuchu, but the City Owner's thoughts turned to her other daughters. She despairingly described her youngest, Chen Qianqian, as "disobedient and capable of nothing," leaving her with "no hope."
Her eldest, Chen Yuanran, was a chronic invalid. In the end, despite her reservations, she reluctantly concluded that only Chen Chuchu was truly fit to be the Heir Apparent. The next day, Chen Yuanran, the eldest daughter, instructed her attendant Zi Nian to ask Pei Heng for leave from school, wishing to avoid Chen Qianqian and Han Shuo. Zi Nian encouraged her to socialize more, but Yuanran, feeling forgotten by her mother and unacknowledged by her sisters, expressed her isolation.
Later, Yuanran was seen worrying about hair loss, instructing Zi Nian to bring various ingredients for hair health, highlighting her ongoing struggles with her delicate health. Qianqian, mentally fatigued from her "dream" life, was relieved that Han Shuo was no longer trying to kill her. She decided to play matchmaker between Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu. At school, she tried to switch seats to place Han Shuo closer to Chuchu.
However, Lin Qi misinterpreted her actions, believing Qianqian wanted to sit closer to Pei Heng. A jealous Han Shuo promptly pulled Qianqian back to her original seat, reminding her that as a married woman, she should limit contact with other men. Qianqian, frustrated by his lack of understanding, inwardly labeled him a "clueless man."
Pei Heng then announced a poetry contest on the themes of "Wind, Flowers, Snow, Moon," as part of the selection process for the Heir Apparent, emphasizing rhyming. Chen Chuchu and Chen Yuanran flawlessly composed elegant verses. When it was Lin Qi's turn, she struggled with "Snow." Seeing Qianqian's amusement, Lin Qi challenged her to a bet: if Qianqian could compose a poem, Lin Qi would sweep the latrine; otherwise, Qianqian would.
Qianqian initially hesitated, but when Han Shuo, amused, bet on Qianqian and offered to sweep the latrine for her if she lost, she was spurred to action. Qianqian then cleverly composed unconventional but perfectly rhyming verses for each theme, associating "Wind" with air-dried foods and bellows, "Flowers" with flower-shaped pastries and flower-infused drinks, "Snow" with cold desserts, and "Moon" with mooncakes. Pei Heng praised her ingenuity, much to Lin Qi's chagrin, who was then forced to sweep the latrine.
Han Shuo, observing Qianqian's admiring gaze toward Pei Heng, became visibly jealous and pulled her away. Fuming from her public humiliation, Lin Qi returned to her residence, complaining about the indignity of cleaning the latrine. Her attendant tried to calm her, but Lin Qi expressed resentment toward the City Owner's favoritism for Qianqian over the more capable Chuchu. She then spotted Su Mu carrying gifts from Chen Qianqian.
Enraged, Lin Qi accused Su Mu of flirting with Qianqian and declared that since Qianqian had embarrassed her, she would take her anger out on "her man," savagely whipping Su Mu. Su Mu later returned Qianqian's gifts, his injured arm betraying the whipping. Qianqian immediately understood Lin Qi's actions as a blatant act of defiance, recognizing that the blows to Su Mu were intended for her. Su Mu, ever loyal, downplayed his pain, stating that it would be his heart, not his body, that would ache if Qianqian were angered.
Episode 4 Recap
After receiving Su Mu's gifts, which he was compelled to return, Chen Qianqian rushed to the Music and Dance Academy, furious that Lin Qi had hit Su Mu. Su Mu tried to calm her, stating that while the whip didn't hurt him, it would make his heart ache if she were angered.
Chen Qianqian told Su Mu he no longer needed to curry favor with her and should treat her as a friend, acknowledging his reluctance to remain at the Academy. She proposed to buy Su Mu's freedom, not to keep him for entertainment, but to free him and secure him a new path. Su Mu, however, felt his lowly status prevented such a friendship.
Unbeknownst to Chen Qianqian, Han Shuo, who had initially been angered upon hearing she went to the Academy for Su Mu and smashed a horse ornament he made, had followed her. He planned to mock her, but overheard her conversation with Lin Qi. Chen Qianqian bravely defended Han Shuo, urging Lin Qi not to look down on him due to his heart disease, as he possessed both martial arts skills and strategic intelligence.
Han Shuo was surprised and increasingly intrigued by Chen Qianqian, realizing she was not the arrogant, illiterate, and cruel person rumored, but rather cute, intelligent, and kind. He decided to help her, wanting to ensure Lin Qi had no musicians left if she dared refuse Chen Qianqian. Han Shuo went to the City Owner and feigned self-deprecation, emphasizing his terminal heart disease and short remaining lifespan.
He requested that all musicians from the Music and Dance Academy be transferred to Chen Qianqian's mansion to entertain her, so she wouldn't be lonely after he was gone. Despite a courtier's objection, the City Owner, who doted on Chen Qianqian, granted his request. The next day, Lin Qi, fuming, arrived at Chen Qianqian's mansion with all the musicians. Chen Qianqian gleefully taunted her, noting that since Lin Qi had refused her money, the Academy was now "banned by law."
As Lin Qi lunged at Chen Qianqian with her whip, Han Shuo intervened, snatching the weapon and presenting it to Chen Qianqian. Chen Qianqian, intending to keep only Su Mu, tried to return the other musicians to Lin Qi, but Lin Qi refused, reminding her of Han Shuo's self-abasement for these musicians and the rumors circulating about the couple's audacity. Han Shuo's true motive for acquiring the musicians was to facilitate communication with his spy, who was embedded among them.
The spy reported that despite years in Huayuan City, he hadn't located the Dragon Bone, but had gathered extensive intelligence on the city's treasury, military, and the City Owner's health. Han Shuo, however, was preoccupied with Chen Qianqian, asking about her past activities at the Academy. To allow his spy to continue gathering information, Han Shuo, in Chen Qianqian's name, sent the remaining musicians to the Second Princess Chen Chuchu's mansion.
The City Owner, upon learning this, was greatly displeased with Chen Chuchu, believing she was "hanging out" with musicians and neglecting her duties, thus diminishing her reputation. Meanwhile, Chen Qianqian sent a masterfully crafted Qin to Pei Heng. Han Shuo, mistakenly believing it was a thank-you gift for him, instructed his attendant Bai Ji to feign surprise and conceal his inability to play the Qin. However, Chen Qianqian was meeting Pei Heng.
She encouraged him to embrace his true passion for playing the Qin, which he had long suppressed to avoid being seen as a "pleasing tool" or bound by societal expectations. She urged him to "stick to his heart" and not care about others' opinions, drawing a parallel to Su Mu's own plight. Pei Heng, moved by her words, played the Qin, signaling his agreement to keep Su Mu.
Just then, Lin Qi, hearing the music, burst in and furiously accused Chen Qianqian of forcing Pei Heng to play. She then ambushed Chen Qianqian, dislocating her arm. Han Shuo, teasingly asking if "playing the Qin broke her arm," offered to help. Despite Zi Rui's proud recount of Chen Qianqian's childhood resilience to pain, Chen Qianqian admitted she was terrified.
Han Shuo dismissed everyone, then reset her arm, distracting her with an exaggerated tale of their first meeting, describing her bravery and how he fell in love at first sight. Chen Qianqian hummed dismissively throughout the procedure, later realizing his romantic narrative was merely a ploy. Han Shuo questioned why she always pretended not to be afraid of pain, to which she sighed that it was "the situation" and her role as the Third Princess.
Later, a spy reported a crucial secret: Chen Chuchu was not the City Owner's biological daughter. With Chen Yuanyuan disabled, Chen Qianqian was the sole legitimate successor. The spy proposed poisoning Chen Qianqian to force the City Owner to use the Dragon Bone, which could then be stolen to cure Han Shuo. This act, he argued, would also destabilize Huayuan City, making it ripe for Xuanhu's conquest and securing its valuable black stone mine.
Han Shuo, however, hesitated, realizing that the Dragon Bone could only save one person, condemning Chen Qianqian to death. He decided the plan needed "more time to think" and "couldn't be rushed." Han Shuo then spotted Chen Qianqian happily chatting with Pei Heng. Feeling a pang of jealousy, he overheard Chen Qianqian instructing Pei Heng not to send Xuanhu fruits to him, as it might make him homesick.
She added that Han Shuo "only has the Dragon Bone in his mind." Han Shuo was touched by her apparent consideration, even if she also saw him as single-minded. Chen Qianqian, realizing Han Shuo seemed unhappy after Pei Heng's visit and suspecting he might have been jealous, decided to throw him a surprise birthday party to make him feel at home.
She boasted to Zi Rui that she knew all his personal details—his birth date, height, weight, blood type, and preferences—"better than his mom." While shopping for gifts, all the shops closed their doors, fearing her past habit of buying on credit. It was only when Zi Rui shouted that they would pay in cash that the shops reopened. Chen Qianqian decided to make him custom shoes and socks, a Xuanhu City tradition.
She snuck into his room to secretly measure his shoe size. When Han Shuo walked in, she quickly measured his neck, then, with an embrace, measured his chest and waist, leaving Han Shuo utterly confused and convinced she was "throwing herself at him." She also made bamboo firecrackers for his celebration. That evening, Chen Qianqian presented Han Shuo with his gifts: a handmade outfit and shoes, and a hotpot meal. Seeing her efforts, Han Shuo finally smiled.
She shared her knowledge of his heart condition, the prophecy that he wouldn't live past twenty, and urged him not to give up. She confidently declared that "there's one person who can cure you, and she'll be the one who loves you the most," promising to create a miracle if one didn't appear. Han Shuo, who had poison hidden in his sleeve, silently put it away. They shared fruit wine, chosen by Chen Qianqian because of his heart condition.
She toasted him, even "sparing the orange's life." Han Shuo confessed that he had found a way to cure his disease, but "didn't want to use that." As they both became tipsy, Han Shuo observed Chen Qianqian was completely unguarded around him. They eventually drifted off to sleep, embracing amidst the flowers.
Episode 5 Recap
Lin Qi, having grown up alongside Chen Chuchu, staunchly supports her and holds great disdain for Chen Qianqian. Lin Qi also suspects that Chen Qianqian has lost her martial arts abilities. To confirm this and ensure Chen Qianqian’s defeat, she suggests to the City Owner adding a Kung Fu test, specifically an open challenge, to the upcoming Young Master selection exam. Chen Qianqian has little to recommend her beyond martial arts prowess, which she now lacks.
The City Owner, eager for Chen Qianqian to finally distinguish herself, readily agrees to Lin Qi's suggestion, hoping Chen Qianqian might surpass her adoptive sister, Chen Chuchu. Chen Qianqian, who is actually Chen Xiaoqian and possesses no martial skills, protests vehemently, arguing the addition of a Kung Fu test is "unfair" and suggests they are "pulling strings" by adding a section where she is supposedly strong.
However, her objections are dismissed by the City Owner, who playfully warns her not to be self-willed and to avoid injuring anyone with her supposed formidable skills. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Chen Qianqian approaches Chen Chuchu to ask for her help in convincing their mother to cancel the test.
Chen Chuchu, however, believes a Young Master should be proficient in both civil and military arts and refuses, even stating that if they become rivals in the test, sisterly affection should be cast aside. Feeling that "life has finally decided to teach me a good lesson," Chen Qianqian resolves to find a way to avoid the martial arts exam, turning to Han Shuo for assistance. Meanwhile, Han Shuo’s investigations into Chen Qianqian continue.
His subordinate reports finding five hundred sealing wax bamboo tubes in Chen Qianqian's backyard kitchen, custom-made by her servant, Zi Rui. These bamboo tubes are identical to the one used in the "secret letter" incident.
Recalling Chen Qianqian’s intimate knowledge of his personal details—including his height, weight, blood type, preferences, and even his mother’s cooking—Han Shuo concludes that she had thoroughly investigated him, misled him on purpose, and engineered the "secret letter" incident to gain his trust and disarm his suspicion. Enraged by her "sinister and insidious" manipulation, Han Shuo suffers a severe heart attack and faints. Chen Qianqian rushes into the room, distressed by Han Shuo’s collapse.
She quickly instructs Zi Rui to open the windows for fresh air and desperately searches for his Quick-Acting Heart Reliever or Ginseng lozenge. Finding a large pill, she administers it to him mouth-to-mouth. When Han Shuo regains consciousness, he accuses her of "false display of affection" and confronts her with the bamboo tube evidence, asking why she lied and framed him. Chen Qianqian, caught red-handed, falls to her knees in apology.
Zi Rui tries to make her stand, reminding her of Huayuan City's custom that women only kneel to Heaven, Earth, and the City Owner, but Chen Qianqian feigns weak legs. She tearfully admits to making up the story about his collusion with Xuanhu spies and instructing Chen Chuchu to intercept him, but insists she never put a defense map on the boat, as she couldn't genuinely harm him.
She then rationalizes her actions, claiming she wanted him to "think highly of me" and trust her, having sensed his initial dislike. As further proof of her sincerity, she offers to convert the remaining 498 bamboo tubes into fireworks as an apology. Han Shuo, feigning acceptance while secretly planning revenge, invites her to a "glorious moon in the garden" banquet to "drink some vintage wine." Panicked, Chen Qianqian seeks advice from the storytellers.
Framing her situation as "banana" (Han Shuo) planning to kill "orange" (herself), she learns that Han Shuo’s fatal weakness is a congenital heart disease, and if she could help him, he might spare her. She then remembers the Dragon Bone, which was Han Shuo's primary reason for marrying into Huayuan City. She believes that if she obtains the Dragon Bone and cures his heart disease, he will surely let her go.
The storytellers are aghast, revealing that the Dragon Bone is Huayuan City's most sacred and precious treasure, its location known only to the City Owner and Young Master. They warn that touching it without elaborate rituals, the City Owner’s explicit order, and official witnessing is a capital offense. Ignoring their pleas, Chen Qianqian defiantly declares herself "the Third Princess who's afraid of nothing" and vows to "become a drama queen" to twist her fate.
Chen Qianqian then breaks into the ancestral hall, brushing past the horrified female officials who desperately try to dissuade her with warnings of execution and by trying to mislead her about the Dragon Bone's location. Finding the Dragon Bone, she orders her servants to stew it, instructing them to add spices to mask its awful smell. When her terrified servants hesitate, Chen Qianqian takes over the cooking herself, noting the pungent odor of the stewing bone.
Upon hearing that Chen Qianqian has stolen and stewed the ancestral Dragon Bone, the City Owner is furious and rushes to Yueli Mansion, vowing to "hit her to death." At the garden banquet, Han Shuo repeatedly urges Chen Qianqian to drink the poisoned wine. Chen Qianqian attempts to refuse, claiming to be unwell. She apologizes for her past foolishness and acknowledges her supposed reputation as a "hopeless" daughter.
She then gives a long speech, admitting her past wrongs were "forced" but claiming deep concern for his heart disease, which she noticed upon their first meeting. She presents the Dragon Bone soup as a "guiding drug" for his longevity, hoping they will "live together until old age." Han Shuo, still disbelieving, presses her on the Dragon Bone, which she assures him is now stewing in the kitchen.
Han Shuo goes to the kitchen, where his subordinate marvels at the "condensed essence" of the soup, and Zi Rui, still oblivious to the full danger, extols the Dragon Bone's legendary powers and significance to Huayuan City, while also worrying about Chen Qianqian's punishment. Han Shuo, though still suspicious, is struck by the foul smell of the soup.
Suddenly, his subordinate reminds him that Chen Qianqian is still in the garden, making Han Shuo realize she might have drunk the poisoned wine he intended for her. He rushes back, shouting "Qianqian, no!" as he sees her drink the 'poisoned' wine and dramatically spit fake blood, collapsing into his arms. At this very moment, Zi Rui sets off fireworks, which were meant to create a dramatic effect for Chen Qianqian's staged "death."
Simultaneously, Chen Chuchu, leading a mission to capture Xuanhu spies, also uses fireworks as a signal for her converging attack. Zi Rui's fireworks inadvertently expose Chen Chuchu's team, leading to a chaotic fight, injuries, and a failed capture. The City Owner, already furious about the stolen Dragon Bone, arrives at Yueli Mansion and is immediately informed of Chen Qianqian's "poisoning."
Learning the Dragon Bone is "melted" in the kitchen, she panics and orders the soup to be brought immediately, convinced it can cure her daughter. The First Princess, Chen Yuanyuan, briefly examines Chen Qianqian and concludes her condition is "not fatal." Han Shuo, distraught, still believes Chen Qianqian is dying from his poisoned wine. He takes the Dragon Bone soup and administers it to her mouth-to-mouth, vowing he cannot let her die after all she has done for him.
Chen Qianqian dramatically "wakes up," proclaiming the Dragon Bone's miraculous effect. She then insists that Han Shuo drink the remaining soup to cure his heart disease. He hesitates, but Chen Qianqian feigns weakness, claiming her "only wish" is for him to be cured, and threatens to "feel dizzy" and "want to die" if he refuses. Feeling guilty over his attempted poisoning and seeing her "threatening him with her own life," Han Shuo reluctantly drinks the rest of the soup.
He feels no immediate change but Chen Qianqian reassures him he will be cured. The City Owner, relieved to find Chen Qianqian alive, scolds her for destroying the ancestral Dragon Bone, lamenting the inevitable public and official outrage. Chen Qianqian apologizes, but the City Owner, still doting on her, comforts her, promising to protect her from any harm, regardless of the consequences.
Episode 6 Recap
The City Owner realizes Chen Qianqian genuinely loves Han Shuo, as the cinnabar dot, a symbol of purity, remains on Qianqian’s wrist, indicating their marriage has not been consummated. However, she suspects Han Shuo used Qianqian to obtain the Dragon Bone. Seeing Han Shuo as ambitious and manipulative, the City Owner vows to strip him of his newfound health, making him "a worthless person again."
She coldly remarks that if she must keep someone around, it should be "an obedient dog," implying Qianqian will be kept in line. Meanwhile, Minister Yang, a hidden agent for Xuanhu City, meets with Han Shuo. She informs him that news of him consuming the Dragon Bone has been sent back to Xuanhu City and thanks him for the diversion created by the fireworks that exposed Chen Chuchu’s activities, allowing her to meet with him.
Han Shuo clarifies he didn't orchestrate the fireworks. With his heart disease cured, Minister Yang states their next step is to seize Huayuan City's black stone mine. After affirming her loyalty due to her family ties in Xuanhu City, Han Shuo asks Minister Yang to protect Chen Qianqian and defend her reputation if any future incidents arise, emphasizing his desire to prevent any further harm to Qianqian.
Chen Chuchu, who sustained severe injuries during her failed mission, refuses to report them to the City Owner, fearing her mother's disappointment and accusations of uselessness. Her subordinate, Zi Zhu, questions how Chen Qianqian knew the Dragon Bone’s hidden location, suggesting favoritism from the City Owner. Chen Chuchu dismisses this, attributing Qianqian’s discovery to mere coincidence, but Zi Zhu presses further, questioning if the fireworks, which also caused Chuchu’s injury, were also just a coincidence.
Chen Qianqian, determined to avoid the upcoming Kung Fu test, stages an elaborate act, pretending that the poison she ingested has rendered her martial arts abilities completely useless, declaring herself "a worthless person." When Han Shuo arrives, concerned, she exaggerates her despair, even feigning a craving for pomegranates she later rejects. She proposes annulling their marriage and urges him to seek refuge with Chen Chuchu, believing this will redirect the story according to her original script.
Han Shuo reveals Chen Chuchu is severely injured and details how the fireworks from the previous night exposed Chuchu’s secret mission, leading to her injury. Qianqian feigns surprise and dismisses the fireworks as a mere "accident." Han Shuo steadfastly refuses to leave her. Once alone, Qianqian congratulates herself on her acting prowess for protecting her life, but she is still frustrated that Han Shuo refused to leave, resolving to find another opportunity to push him towards Chen Chuchu.
Lord Sangqi arrives at Qianqian's mansion, delivering the City Owner's decree: Han Shuo is accused of seducing Chen Qianqian into stealing the Dragon Bone, and as punishment, a rib will be surgically removed from him to appease public outrage and restore order. Qianqian is horrified, realizing her actions have inadvertently endangered Han Shuo. The City Owner arrives, explaining the severe punishment is necessary because Han Shuo "damaged the fortune of Huayuan City."
Qianqian desperately pleads with her mother, offering to take the punishment herself, stating she alone stole the Dragon Bone and forced Han Shuo to drink it. She argues that such an injury would leave the proud Han Shuo disabled, a fate worse than death for him. The City Owner counters that Qianqian wouldn't have caused such chaos without Han Shuo's influence and that Qianqian is now branded a "bane of civilians."
Qianqian vehemently insists on bearing the consequences, proclaiming herself "his rib," and continues to offer her own body for punishment, but the City Owner orders her guards to pull her away. Amidst the chaos, Han Shuo awakens. Qianqian tearfully apologizes, explaining she only stole the Dragon Bone to cure his heart disease, never intending for him to suffer. Han Shuo, now fully recovered and demonstrably powerful, effortlessly breaks his chains, shielding Qianqian behind him.
He then voluntarily offers himself for the bone removal, believing his punishment will exonerate Qianqian. Qianqian, concerned for his life, tries to refuse, but Han Shuo asserts that as a princess, she must face consequences, and his punishment is for her sake. Qianqian, in an impulsive act, declares she no longer wants to be a princess and pleads with her mother to strip her of her title and make her a commoner if it means escaping responsibility.
The City Owner initially rejects this. However, Lord Sangqi intervenes, highlighting Han Shuo and Qianqian's "unbreakable love" and cautioning the City Owner that continued defiance would only worsen Qianqian’s predicament. Ultimately, the City Owner compromises, issuing a decree that Chen Qianqian is "stubborn and disobedient," guilty of stealing the Dragon Bone and "damaging the fortune of the city."
Consequently, she is stripped of her princess title, reduced to a commoner, deprived of all privileges, and confined to her mansion to reflect on her mistakes. News of Chen Qianqian's demotion spreads quickly, shocking many who thought she was the City Owner's favorite. Whispers about Han Shuo's miraculous recovery and enhanced strength contrast sharply with Qianqian, now deemed a "worthless person."
At the Clan School, students gossip about Qianqian's inability to attend and even speculate she orchestrated her demotion to avoid classes. Meanwhile, the Eldest Princess, Chen Yuanjuan, who has been disabled by poison for many years, dismisses concerns for Qianqian, noting Qianqian’s audacity in stealing the Dragon Bone.
Although her attendant points out that Dragon Bone cannot cure Yuanjuan's specific ailment, Yuanjuan, while acknowledging her mother’s continued favoritism towards Qianqian, admits that Qianqian’s willingness to sacrifice her status for someone else makes her "better than before." Later, while struggling to retrieve a book at the Clan School, Chen Yuanjuan is helped by Su Mu, who then kneels to speak to her at eye level. Her attendants object, belittling Su Mu as "just a musician."
Yuanjuan rebukes them, asserting that "musicians are not different from ordinary people" and forbidding gossip. She later reflects that Su Mu is the only person who has ever shown her such respect, making him unique. Lin Qi, gloating over Chen Qianqian's downfall, leads a mob of debt collectors to Yueli Mansion. She asserts that Qianqian, now merely "a commoner," is vulnerable to demands for repayment and retribution.
The creditors recount long-standing debts for luxury goods and outrageous demands for free items. Qianqian, seemingly resigned, instructs her servant Zi Rui to allow the creditors to take everything from the mansion to settle the accounts. Despite her mansion being emptied, Lin Qi is still not satisfied. She brings forward a man who claims Qianqian's reckless horse-riding on her wedding day caused his leg fracture. Qianqian accuses him of trying to cheat her.
As Qianqian expresses her helplessness, Han Shuo steps forward, proclaiming he will "solve" the problem and proudly declares, "I will support you." Lin Qi mocks their "love" and belittles Qianqian’s new status. As Han Shuo warns the crowd not to touch Qianqian, Pei Heng arrives with his private guard.
He reminds everyone that regardless of her title, Qianqian is his fiancée of over ten years and offers to settle all her financial and personal debts at Pei Mansion, even suggesting they take his own leg if compensation is needed. Lin Qi attempts to provoke him by mentioning Han Shuo's recovery and the enduring engagement, but Pei Heng calmly states that Han Shuo's health does not alter his "teacher and student relationship" with Qianqian.
He then powerfully declares that Qianqian, as the City Owner's daughter, the future City Owner’s sister, accompanied by Xuanhu City’s young master, and still his fiancée, "is still the most honorable woman in Huayuan City." Enraged, Lin Qi shoves Qianqian into a large water pot. Han Shuo immediately dives in to rescue her. Chen Qianqian falls ill with a cold. Pei Heng diligently attends to her, and when she struggles to sleep, he plays the Qin, reminiscing about their childhood.
Qianqian expresses gratitude for his care, acknowledging the unfamiliar warmth of having someone look after her when sick. Pei Heng eventually departs, citing the late hour and propriety. Soon after, Han Shuo, who had been secretly listening and grew jealous, enters and roughly administers medicine to Qianqian. He states that since he can't play the Qin, he can only ensure her quick recovery.
Qianqian shares glimpses of her past life as a scriptwriter, recalling times she had to work even when sick, with no time for dating, and being mocked by actors. Han Shuo, attributing her disjointed words to feverish delirium, checks her temperature. Qianqian calls him her "big tiger." The next morning, Han Shuo instructs Zi Rui to lock the doors, particularly against Pei Heng, to ensure Qianqian's rest.
Later, despite being stripped of her title and possessions, Qianqian expresses a sense of freedom and contentment, proclaiming that "with Han Shuo, I have everything in the world." Han Shuo reassures her he has ample wealth from Xuanhu City to support her. Qianqian then playfully questions whether his funds are "dowry" or "betrothal presents," subtly suggesting she wishes to manage them.
Though initially correcting her, Han Shuo eventually relents, instructing Bai Ji to bring the account books and playfully suggesting he'd agree to call them "dowry" if she'd call him "husband." Qianqian is surprised, but Han Shuo assures her he won't force her.
Episode 7 Recap
Han Shuo attempted to keep Chen Qianqian confined to the mansion, arranging for various entertainments and services to be brought to her. However, Chen Qianqian felt stifled and, defying his wishes, snuck out with Zi Rui to attend an opera. As soon as they stepped outside, they were met by an angry mob who accused Chen Qianqian of destroying the Dragon Bone. The crowd pelted her with rotten eggs and vegetables, forcing her and Zi Rui to flee.
Chen Qianqian consulted three storytellers, hoping they could devise a solution. They advised her that such widespread public indignation would be difficult to appease and suggested that only a new treasure from heaven, a phenomenon that might take over a thousand years, could truly shift public opinion. Dejected, Chen Qianqian was forced to scold herself publicly to blend in and make her way home through the persistent crowd, where Han Shuo eventually pulled her to safety inside the mansion.
Meanwhile, Lin Qi, initially gloating over Chen Qianqian's misfortune, received devastating news from her steward: her family's black stone mine had been struck by lightning and exploded. Lin Qi was furious, attributing the disaster to Chen Qianqian's jinx-like influence, despite the lightning having "struck the wrong person's asset." Chen Qianqian, overhearing this, secretly relished Lin Qi’s plight, but Zi Rui quickly warned her that the mob outside her mansion was growing larger and threatening to storm the gates.
Chen Chuchu reported to the City Owner that the mine disaster was indeed caused by a lightning strike, not human error. However, rescuing the over one hundred trapped miners proved complicated. An official explained that their only escape route was blocked by debris, and while explosives could clear it, doing so would jeopardize Huayuan City's crucial fortune lode, which was intrinsically linked to the mine.
Having recently lost the Dragon Bone, the city's leaders were unwilling to risk destabilizing another fundamental asset. A petition signed by thousands of citizens was then presented, demanding Chen Qianqian's execution to appease heaven's wrath. The City Owner, unwilling to sacrifice her daughter, sought alternative solutions. Minister Yang proposed delaying the rescue until the mine collapsed, then feigning a late arrival and offering financial compensation to the victims' families, thus preserving the fortune lode.
To protect Chen Qianqian from the agitated public, Chen Chuchu volunteered to lead troops to surround Yueli Mansion, publicly stating it was to guard Chen Qianqian and address her crimes later, but secretly to ensure her safety. The City Owner approved, also privately instructing Chen Chuchu to always protect Chen Qianqian.
Han Shuo, inside the mansion, reassured Chen Qianqian, reminding her that as the City Owner's daughter, it was understandable for the public to turn on her, but he vowed to keep her safe. Outside, the crowd continued to demand Chen Qianqian's sacrifice. Han Shuo, having studied the mine maps, proposed using explosives to breach the fortune lode and create an escape route for the miners, believing they were still alive.
Chen Qianqian, however, worried about the severe repercussions of such an act, fearing she would again face public condemnation. She first approached Chen Chuchu, urging her to take action to save the miners and win popular support. Chen Chuchu, still resentful of the City Owner's perceived favoritism towards Chen Qianqian, refused to act, believing the miners' sacrifice was their "privilege" as Huayuan citizens and fearing the City Owner's displeasure. She then confined Chen Qianqian to her room.
Observing Chen Qianqian's failed attempt to get help from Chen Chuchu, Han Shuo subtly suggested she rely on a man. Chen Qianqian, missing the hint, thought of Pei Heng, much to Han Shuo's annoyance. She feigned illness to summon Pei Heng and requested his help to escape. Pei Heng, agreeing, disguised her as his male servant to facilitate her departure.
Han Shuo, noticing Pei Heng's involvement, was visibly jealous but remained confident that without his explosives, no one else could blast the fortune lode. Chen Chuchu soon discovered Chen Qianqian's escape and, furious, reported it to the City Owner. Overcome with worry for Chen Qianqian, the City Owner immediately rushed to the mine, followed by Chen Chuchu and her City Guards.
Pei Heng tried to dissuade Chen Qianqian from her plan, warning of heightened public anger and the inability of even the City Owner to protect her, but Chen Qianqian remained steadfast, asserting that all lives were equal. She left Pei Heng to meet Zi Rui at the mine, while Pei Heng, concerned, followed. Han Shuo, knowing Huayuan City lacked proper explosives, anticipated that Chen Qianqian would eventually turn to him.
At the mine, Chen Qianqian and Zi Rui realized their lack of explosives, as Huayuan City only produced fireworks. Han Shuo then appeared, slightly annoyed that Chen Qianqian had not considered him. He confirmed he had the necessary explosives from Xuanhu City and, despite their differing political positions, declared it a matter of life and death, refusing to gamble with human lives. Chen Qianqian was surprised by his compassionate stance, recognizing him as a true hero.
Han Shuo revealed he had already planted the explosives. A heated argument ensued between him and Chen Qianqian over who should detonate the charge, each wanting to protect the other from danger. As they debated, Han Shuo's subordinate, Bai Ji, quickly lit the fuse, pushing them both to safety just before the powerful explosion. Immediately after the blast, Lin Qi and her men arrived, confronting Chen Qianqian and blaming her for the mine's destruction.
Chen Qianqian retorted that she had detonated the fortune lode itself, making Lin Qi's mine seem insignificant. Pei Heng's guards attempted to protect Chen Qianqian, but they were soon outmatched by Chen Chuchu and the City Guards, who arrived with orders to arrest Chen Qianqian for destroying the fortune lode. However, the City Owner intervened, angrily reprimanding Chen Chuchu for attempting to arrest her sister and reassuring Chen Qianqian of her safety.
With the path cleared, all the trapped miners were successfully rescued. They recognized Chen Qianqian and expressed profound gratitude for her heroism. Despite this, Lin Qi and several officials continued to demand Chen Qianqian's execution, lamenting the loss of both the Dragon Bone and the fortune lode, and demanding a new treasure as compensation. But the rescued miners knelt and passionately pleaded with the City Owner for Chen Qianqian's pardon, praising her benevolence and love for the people.
As the debate raged, Chen Qianqian noticed a black liquid seeping from the ground. She identified it as petroleum, a substance far more precious than the black stone mine. An official confirmed that this "black water" was an incredibly rare and valuable resource, its discovery attributed to Chen Qianqian's actions, which had evidently moved the ancestors to bestow a new, immense blessing upon Huayuan City. With this monumental discovery, Minister Yang promptly proposed restoring Chen Qianqian's Princess title.
The City Owner, overjoyed by the unexpected wealth, readily agreed, acknowledging Chen Qianqian's great contribution. The crowd, their anger transformed into reverence, cheered for Chen Qianqian, now hailing her as Huayuan City's new lucky star. Later, as Chen Qianqian and Zi Rui walked through the streets, they were initially alarmed when citizens began chasing them once more. To their surprise, the people were no longer throwing rotten food but instead offering heartfelt gifts and thanks for saving their loved ones. Han Shuo joined them, helping Chen Qianqian carry the abundant offerings from the grateful populace.
Episode 8 Recap
Huayuan City buzzed with tales of Chen Qianqian's heroism in saving the miners, her popularity growing with each retelling. Her relationship with Han Shuo also deepened, becoming noticeably more intimate. Meanwhile, Lin Qi's fortunes continued to dwindle. With the Music and Dance Academy closed and the mine destroyed, her family was left with only a struggling restaurant.
Her steward even reduced her rations, much to Lin Qi's fury and resentment, as she complained about their sudden poverty after just a mine explosion. Pei Heng received an unprecedented appointment as Minister of Education in the Clan School, a position never before held by a man in Huayuan City. Chen Qianqian encouraged him, expressing her conviction that he could one day become a renowned leader of the City Guards, just like his mother, the late Minister of Defense Pei.
Pei Heng, however, felt a deep-seated inferiority due to his male identity in a matriarchal society, struggling to envision such a future for himself. He confessed his envy for the men of Xuanhu City, who could study, practice Kung Fu, lead armies, and protect their women in times of crisis. Chen Qianqian reassured him that Kung Fu wasn't everything and that his academic prowess, coupled with his compassion in saving the miners regardless of gender, proved his worth.
Despite her recent acclaim, Chen Qianqian found herself unable to escape the Crown Princess Election, a prospect the City Owner held high hopes for. Pei Heng, impressed by her growing public support, vowed to help her secure the top spot, believing she would be a benevolent ruler capable of shouldering the people's burdens. However, Chen Qianqian was deeply distressed by the idea, comparing the public's current demand for her to compete with their previous calls for her sacrifice.
Han Shuo, seeing Pei Heng's involvement, became possessive and decided to tutor Chen Qianqian himself, leading to a comical rivalry between the two men. Pei Heng presented her with a thick volume of past exam questions and notes, urging her to study diligently. Han Shuo, observing Qianqian's disinterest, countered with a slim book of "carefully chosen" questions, hinting mischievously that they might be illegally obtained.
The two bickered over who knew Qianqian better and how to best prepare her, with Han Shuo reminding Pei Heng of the limited time. At one point, Han Shuo used his finger to write a character for "you" on Qianqian's back, intentionally adding a stroke to make it mean "you are in my heart," much to her embarrassment. At the tea house, people placed bets on the Crown Princess Election.
Despite Chen Qianqian's recent heroic act, the public overwhelmingly favored Chen Chuchu, dismissing Chen Qianqian as an "ignorant naughty girl" compared to Chen Chuchu's proven skills in literature, martial arts, riding, and archery. Even Chen Qianqian herself, disguised and accompanied by Zi Rui, wagered all her assets on Chen Chuchu, determined to avoid becoming the Crown Princess. Han Shuo, also in disguise, discovered her scheme.
When exposed, Chen Qianqian scrambled to explain she was buying melon seeds for him, but her excuse was unconvincing. She then quickly pledged to study hard, primarily for Han Shuo's sake. Chen Qianqian visited Chen Chuchu, giving her famous tutors' predicted test questions and asking for Chuchu's completed practice books to present to Han Shuo and Pei Heng as her own. She openly admitted she was the same old troublesome Chen Qianqian, unsuitable for the role of City Owner.
She told Chen Chuchu that their mother's strictness with Chen Chuchu was a sign of high expectations, while her own mischievousness was tolerated because no one expected anything from her. She also rationalized Chen Chuchu's earlier decision to prioritize duty over saving the miners, suggesting that given another chance, Chen Chuchu would still choose to save people.
Chen Chuchu was touched, realizing her previous suspicion of Chen Qianqian was due to her own narrow-mindedness and believing Qianqian genuinely cared for her. She dismissed her subordinate Zi Zhu's warnings about Chen Qianqian's past "thefts," including Han Shuo. Back at her mansion, Han Shuo intensified Chen Qianqian's studies, ordering everyone in the household to quiz her, even at meal times.
Overwhelmed and frustrated, Chen Qianqian threw her food, declaring her refusal to compete for the Crown Princess title and lamenting that she was "a worthless person, a fat worthless person who is ridiculed by the whole world." Her elder sister, Chen Yuanyuan, overheard these disheartened words. Feeling a profound empathy, having experienced similar sentiments of uselessness due to her own physical disability, Chen Yuanyuan decided to withdraw from the election.
Su Mu, who now worked at the Clan School and cherished Chen Yuanyuan's acceptance of him despite his past as a musician in the Music and Dance Academy, sought Chen Qianqian's help to persuade Chen Yuanyuan not to give up. Chen Qianqian, regretting the impact of her words, rushed to Chen Yuanyuan's mansion. She found Chen Yuanyuan preparing to submit a petition to withdraw. Chen Yuanyuan confronted her, echoing Qianqian's self-deprecating remarks.
Chen Qianqian clarified that her words were only about herself and presented Chen Yuanyuan with a compilation of rehabilitation methods for her leg injury, urging her to try. Chen Yuanyuan, however, took this as an insult to her own medical expertise, accusing Chen Qianqian of thinking her skills were superior. She revealed her fear of trying and failing to heal herself, comparing Qianqian's chances of winning the martial arts test without Kung Fu to her own chances of walking again.
She then ordered Chen Qianqian to leave. Later, Han Shuo found Chen Qianqian trying to drink away her sorrows with fruit juice, which she mistook for wine. He gently took it from her, explaining he had replaced all the alcohol in the mansion for her health. To cheer her up, he presented her with two handmade puppets, one resembling her and the other him.
When one of the puppets broke its leg, Han Shuo used the moment to share his own past. He revealed that he had been diagnosed with a fatal heart disease and was told he wouldn't live past twenty, leading him to a period of self-pity. However, Chen Qianqian's unexpected arrival and her efforts to procure the Dragon Bone had cured his condition, changing his perspective.
He realized then that "no one's fate is predestined" and that "everything can be changed," just as his fate had been. He hinted that if she could win the martial arts test despite her lack of Kung Fu, then Chen Yuanyuan could also overcome her disability. Unbeknownst to Chen Qianqian, Lin Qi had bribed a Kung Fu test officer to ensure she would face Chen Qianqian in the martial arts portion of the Crown Princess Election.
Lin Qi intended to personally defeat and publicly humiliate her rival. Han Shuo, learning of this plot, informed Chen Qianqian, offering the "bad news" first but quickly following with the "good news" that he had a plan to ensure her victory. Armed with this new information and renewed determination, Chen Qianqian returned to Chen Yuanyuan's mansion. Despite the guards attempting to turn her away, she pressed forward, calling out to her sister.
She boldly declared that she would win the martial arts test of the Crown Princess Election and demanded Chen Yuanyuan's promise to undergo rehabilitation and try to stand again if she succeeded. Though Chen Yuanyuan remained silent, Chen Qianqian took it as a tacit agreement and vowed to achieve her goal, no matter the difficulty.
Episode 9 Recap
With the Crown Princess Election merely seven days away, Han Shuo takes on the task of personally training Chen Qianqian. Recognizing the tight schedule, he focuses on teaching her powerful, single-strike moves, beginning with the basic horse stance and progressing to specific punching techniques. When Qianqian initially protests, Han Shuo shifts to a serious tone, revealing a strategic maneuver for her upcoming martial arts test against Lin Qi.
He advises her to ensure her score is one point higher than Lin Qi’s. That way, even if both were to tumble off the ring simultaneously, resulting in a draw, Qianqian would still be declared the winner of the Kung Fu test. Han Shuo also dispatches his secret agent, Yang Sihu, to ensure Chen Qianqian’s victory in the election.
He explains that Qianqian's simple-minded, ignorant, and lawless nature makes her easily controllable, allowing him to exert influence over Huayuan City from Yueli Mansion. He emphasizes that Chen Qianqian "must" become the Crown Princess, and since she lacks motivation, they will secure the outcome for her.
Unbeknownst to Han Shuo, Qianqian’s true intent is not to become the Crown Princess but to win the martial arts test solely to inspire her elder sister, Chen Yuanyuan, to recover, secretly hoping that Chen Chuchu will ultimately secure the position. During the literacy test, Chen Qianqian, still aiming to lose, simply draws a stick figure on her paper. However, before it is officially submitted, Yang Sihu's agents discreetly swap her paper with a prepared one, ensuring her successful advancement.
Qianqian remains oblivious to the switch, later confidently remarking that her drawing was "beautiful." The martial arts test commences, featuring fifteen contestants. In the first round, Chen Qianqian’s opponent, secretly arranged by Han Shuo, feigns defeat by intentionally falling off the ring. Qianqian is initially bewildered but continues to win the first three rounds in similar fashion. Onlookers speculate that Lin Qi has bribed these opponents, intending to embarrass Qianqian in a later match.
The City Lord, however, seems to entertain these rumors while confidently noting that Han Shuo, due to his affection for Qianqian, will ensure her protection. In the fourth round, Qianqian faces an unexpected opponent who is neither allied with Han Shuo nor Lin Qi. This formidable opponent quickly knocks Qianqian to the ground. Concerned, Han Shuo instructs an aide to tell Qianqian to forfeit, but her own attendant, Zi Rui, encourages her to fight on.
Qianqian, now genuinely struggling, resorts to a frantic evasive strategy, running around the ring to exhaust her opponent. Once her adversary is winded, Qianqian seizes the opportunity, cunningly pushing her off the stage to secure another win and advance to the finals. The night before the final match, both Chen Qianqian and Han Shuo find themselves unable to sleep. Qianqian expresses her deep fear of facing Lin Qi, worried about severe injury or even death.
Han Shuo reassures her, reminding her of his tactical advice and asserting that Lin Qi would not dare to seriously harm a princess. He even offers her the option to withdraw from the final, acknowledging her fear of pain. However, Qianqian refuses, determined to fight for Chen Yuanyuan, feeling a sense of responsibility for her sister’s leg injury. Han Shuo then shares a custom from Xuanhu City: making wishes to the full moon can make them come true.
To be "closer" to the moon, they climb to a higher vantage point. Despite her fear of heights, Qianqian feels comforted and secure in Han Shuo's embrace. She wishes to win the next day's competition and asks if he will be there to watch; he promises he will. Han Shuo, in turn, makes a silent wish for Qianqian to remain unharmed. Meanwhile, Su Mu persistently tries to persuade Chen Yuanyuan to attend the final.
Despite having already dressed for the occasion, Yuanyuan feigns indifference and claims physical weakness, expressing a desire to stay indoors and read medical texts. Su Mu points out her preparations, but Yuanyuan, stubbornly adhering to her pretense, orders her attendant, Zi Nian, to push her to the study. In the highly anticipated final match, Chen Qianqian confronts Lin Qi, who is notorious for her lethal whip and has a history of losing to Qianqian.
Anticipating a brutal fight, Qianqian requests protective gear. She then proposes an unusual "slow-motion" fighting style, which she calls an "increase in FPS," that momentarily bewilders Lin Qi, allowing Qianqian to land a surprise punch. Following Han Shuo’s earlier advice, Qianqian then closes the distance, engaging Lin Qi in a tenacious hand-to-hand struggle to prevent Lin Qi from effectively using her whip. Enraged by Qianqian's tactics, Lin Qi unleashes her whip, tearing Qianqian's protective gear.
Undeterred, Qianqian discards the broken armor, lunges forward, and embraces Lin Qi, enduring the relentless blows but steadfastly refusing to release her grip or surrender. Witnessing Qianqian’s brutal beating, Pei Heng attempts to intervene by hitting the truce gong. However, Han Shuo’s aide, acting on a subtle signal from Han Shuo, tries to block him.
Pei Heng, invoking his fifteen-year engagement to Qianqian, argues that he has more right to intervene than Han Shuo, who has only recently entered her household. He then strikes the truce gong, urging Qianqian to concede. Qianqian, however, publicly repudiates Pei Heng’s action, declaring that he is neither her family nor her husband, rendering his intervention invalid.
She explicitly chooses Han Shuo to represent her wishes, stating that as long as Han Shuo doesn’t hit the gong, she has not surrendered. The referee, respecting Qianqian's decision, nullifies the truce gong, and the match resumes. Amidst the crowd's murmurs about Pei Heng’s public rejection and Qianqian’s surprising determination, Han Shuo, though visibly pained by Qianqian’s suffering, remains still, understanding her unwavering resolve.
Battered and bruised, Chen Qianqian stubbornly continues the fight, her eyes scanning the crowd for Chen Yuanyuan. Su Mu, having finally convinced Yuanyuan to attend, reports on Qianqian's severe injuries and unwavering refusal to yield, making Yuanyuan realize Qianqian is fighting specifically to motivate her. Despite her lingering hesitation, Yuanyuan is finally wheeled to the arena by Su Mu. Seeing Qianqian's bloodied state, Yuanyuan tearfully pleads with her to surrender, promising to finally commit to rehabilitation.
Lin Qi dismisses Yuanyuan's emotional appeal, scoffing at her as "worthless." Seizing on Lin Qi's momentary distraction, Qianqian musters her last reserves of strength, grabs Lin Qi, and pulls them both off the stage. The match is declared a draw, and according to Han Shuo's cunning strategy, Chen Qianqian is announced as the winner of the Kung Fu test. Later, as Yuanyuan meticulously tends to Qianqian's numerous wounds, Han Shuo, listening from outside the room, furiously counts twenty-seven whip marks.
Enraged, he orders his aide, Bai Ji, to exact revenge by inflicting precisely twenty-seven cuts on Lin Qi before killing her, threatening Bai Ji with the same fate if he falls short. Overhearing this, Qianqian intervenes, calling Han Shuo and Bai Ji inside. She tells them that merely killing Lin Qi would be too lenient, revealing that she has a more comprehensive and satisfying plan for revenge. Pei Heng visits Chen Qianqian to inquire about her injuries.
He expresses genuine remorse, admitting that his attempt to stop the match was purely out of concern for her well-being, a sentiment Qianqian quietly acknowledges. As Pei Heng leaves, Han Shuo intercepts him, confronting him about his sudden public assertion of an engagement he had previously neglected for years. Han Shuo questions whether Pei Heng's actions are driven by genuine concern or an ulterior motive.
He then unequivocally declares that his heart disease is fully cured and that he intends to spend his entire life with Qianqian, advising Pei Heng to abandon any lingering hopes of renewing their past engagement. Han Shuo even suggests that Lin Qi, who is clearly devoted to Pei Heng, might be a more suitable match for him.
Pei Heng counters, challenging Han Shuo's own sincerity by highlighting Qianqian's sacrifices for him, such as losing her princess status for the Dragon Bone, and Han Shuo’s perceived indifference during her brutal whipping. Pei Heng asserts his claim based on their fifteen-year engagement, refusing to be dismissed as an outsider. Han Shuo retorts that Pei Heng's past neglect invalidated the engagement, and his current interest is merely a reactive response to Han Shuo "stealing" Qianqian away.
While Pei Heng admits to his past indifference, he insists his current feelings are sincere. The two men exchange veiled threats and unspoken challenges. Later, Han Shuo's aide, Bai Ji, attempts to incite Han Shuo to conquer Huayuan City, suggesting he could then claim both Qianqian and even Pei Heng. Han Shuo, however, sarcastically dismisses the idea of ever wanting Pei Heng. Despite Han Shuo's warnings and dismissals, Pei Heng remains steadfast in his determination not to give up on Chen Qianqian.
Episode 10 Recap
Lin Qi, who has a severe phobia of rats, found herself confined in a room with twenty-seven of them, a torment orchestrated by Chen Qianqian. Chen Qianqian observed Lin Qi's terrified screams from outside, finding amusement in the situation as a way to vent her frustration while indirectly saving Lin Qi from Han Shuo's more severe retaliation. However, her mirth was short-lived when an escaped rat bit her skirt, causing her to leap in fright.
Han Shuo instinctively caught her, leading to a brief, intimate moment that secretly delighted him. Following the martial arts test, the candidates faced a discourse on current politics, tasked with proposing effective revenue-increasing strategies for Huayuan City. Chen Qianqian's proposal was to implement a head tax on all adults, both male and female. She argued this would not only boost the city's dwindling treasury but also help regulate population growth, alleviating demographic pressures. However, Minister Liu vehemently opposed the idea.
He pointed out that men in Huayuan City held the lowest social status, and requiring them to pay taxes would grant them rights, eventually leading to a social structure akin to Xuanhu City, thus undermining the city's ancestral rules and female-dominated order. The other officials echoed his concerns. Chen Qianqian quickly retracted her suggestion, feigning childishness and claiming her remarks were mere "baby talk." The City Owner, doting on Chen Qianqian, accepted her excuse and dismissed the matter.
Chen Chuchu then presented her strategy, suggesting that Huayuan City follow Xuanhu City's example by converting black stones into explosives. This, she argued, would both bolster their military power and create a lucrative trade commodity. Based on the strength of her discourse, Chen Chuchu was widely considered the undisputed winner of this round. Chen Qianqian, confident in her sister's victory, had even prepared an early congratulatory gift, telling Chen Chuchu that her own financial bets depended on her sister's success.
To everyone's astonishment, including Chen Qianqian herself, the results were announced, declaring Chen Qianqian as the first-place winner of the literacy test. Overjoyed, the City Owner immediately proclaimed Chen Qianqian the Young Master of Huayuan City, allowing no room for refusal. Chen Qianqian tried to decline, stating she was unsuitable and that Chen Chuchu was far more capable.
Although deeply hurt, believing Chen Qianqian's prior gestures were insincere and resenting what she perceived as her mother's blatant favoritism, Chen Chuchu publicly pledged her loyalty and support. Despite Chen Qianqian's persistent protests, the City Owner solidified her decision, ordering Chen Qianqian to prepare for the coronation. Feeling that she had won the city but lost everything important to her, Chen Qianqian expressed her despair.
Later, Chen Chuchu learned from her attendant that Han Shuo had placed a massive bet on Chen Qianqian winning the Young Master title and had profited immensely. This fueled Chen Chuchu's anger, making her believe that Chen Qianqian had deliberately misled her. Chen Qianqian, upon realizing that Han Shuo had secretly manipulated the test results to secure her position as Young Master, became furious.
She confronted him, accusing him of being "showy," "dense," and a "jinx to his wife" for interfering without her consent. Han Shuo insisted he only wanted to give her what she desired, but Qianqian rebuked him for not considering her preferences. During the Young Master's inaugural parade, Han Shuo and Chen Qianqian were mandated by tradition to participate together. Still simmering from their earlier argument, they bickered publicly, trading accusations about past grievances.
Chen Qianqian brought up Han Shuo's attempts to frame her, his suspicious dining habits in her mansion, and the public humiliation she suffered at the Music and Dance Academy. Han Shuo retorted by reminding her that she had kidnapped him, leading to the "poison in the bridal chamber" incident, and pointed out that she had originally intended to save Chen Chuchu, not him.
Exasperated, Han Shuo declared he would not parade with such a difficult woman and abruptly walked away, accidentally stepping on and tearing Chen Qianqian's elaborate ceremonial dress. The public, witnessing the spectacle, criticized Han Shuo's disrespect towards his wife. To make amends, Han Shuo later appeared in women's clothing, offering to let Chen Qianqian tear his clothes as retribution for the parade incident. However, Pei Heng arrived unexpectedly and witnessed the awkward scene.
Han Shuo quickly tried to explain it as a playful domestic moment. Pei Heng, unimpressed, lectured Han Shuo on adopting the "virtues of Huayuan City men" and presented him with a book on "Men's Virtues." Seizing the opportunity, Chen Qianqian immediately appealed to Pei Heng for help with the mountain of official documents she faced, flattering him by calling him a "male god" whose presence made people "unconsciously like him."
This interaction led Pei Heng to mistakenly believe Chen Qianqian harbored romantic feelings for him. Han Shuo, overhearing that Pei Heng was staying overnight in Chen Qianqian's residence to assist her with paperwork, was consumed by jealousy. He realized that his efforts to elevate Chen Qianqian to Young Master status had inadvertently created an advantageous situation for Pei Heng.
Acting on a suggestion from an official, subtly influenced by Han Shuo's machinations, the City Owner decreed that Chen Qianqian should lead an expedition to suppress bandits on Weimeng Mountain as a trial, with Han Shuo accompanying her for assistance. Chen Qianqian was highly reluctant, citing her lack of military experience and expressing concern for the local populace. She argued that Chen Chuchu was better suited for such a task.
Bai Ji's comment that Chen Qianqian merely wanted to stay home and review documents with Pei Heng further irritated Han Shuo. Remembering her overarching goal to foster a relationship between Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu to move the story towards its conclusion, Chen Qianqian agreed to the mission, but stipulated that Chen Chuchu must accompany them. Meanwhile, concerned for Chen Qianqian's safety, Pei Heng secretly dispatched his trusted attendant, Su Ziying, to protect her and provide updates.
As they prepared for the expedition, Chen Qianqian packed an excessive amount of personal belongings, seemingly preparing to relocate rather than suppress bandits. Han Shuo was visibly displeased by Pei Heng's decision to send an attendant, sensing a deepening rivalry. Chen Qianqian initially rejected Su Ziying, but upon learning his name, she recognized him as a crucial character from her original screenplay—a plot device introduced to advance the narrative and ultimately become the matchmaker for Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu.
With renewed enthusiasm, she promptly accepted Su Ziying into their retinue, much to Han Shuo's frustration. Han Shuo grumbled that his attempt to remove Chen Qianqian from Pei Heng's influence had been cleverly countered, leading to Pei Heng installing a "spy" in their midst. He pondered whether he had spoiled Chen Qianqian too much by allowing her to accept another man into her service so easily.
Episode 11 Recap
As the group prepared for their journey, Chen Qianqian, viewing her current reality through the lens of a story, internally mused about Su Ziying, whom she conceptualized as "Cherry." In her revised plot, she cast Chen Chuchu as the heroine "Apple" and Han Shuo as the male lead "Banana." She recalled that in the original script, "Cherry" was a loyal advisor who had manipulated events on Weimeng Mountain—through methods like "trapping and drugging"—to make "Banana" fall for the heroine.
Chen Qianqian hoped Su Ziying could now repeat his role to facilitate a romance between Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu, thus allowing her to "rest and wait for the finale." Han Shuo, noticing the chill, moved to drape a cloak over Chen Qianqian, cautioning her to be careful. However, Su Ziying swiftly intervened, covering her himself. He immediately knelt before Han Shuo, feigning humility and concern for Chen Qianqian's health, subtly implying Han Shuo had threatened him.
Han Shuo, infuriated by Su Ziying's cunning, clenched his chest in frustration. Chen Qianqian, oblivious to the deeper manipulation, chided Han Shuo for supposedly making Su Ziying kneel and insisted that Pei Heng had sent Su Ziying purely for her care. She then asked Su Ziying to join her in the carriage for a private talk. Later, Han Shuo spoke with Bai Ji, admitting his chest tightness was from vexation, not heart disease.
Chen Qianqian, continuing her matchmaking efforts, then urged Han Shuo to consult with Chen Chuchu about their itinerary, praising their respective intelligence and military prowess and emphasizing the need for thorough discussion. Chen Chuchu and Han Shuo discussed strategy for Weimeng Mountain. Chen Chuchu acknowledged the mountain's complex terrain and asked Han Shuo for his plans. Han Shuo, dismissing Meng Guo as arrogant, predicted the bandit leader would not remain hidden.
He proposed stationing their forces to lure Meng Guo out, humorously suggesting Su Ziying as bait before declaring that he, as Young Master of Xuanhu City, would serve as the bait himself. Meanwhile, Chen Yuanyuan remained at Risheng Mansion due to her leg injury, feeling sorry for herself and lamenting her inability to contribute. Zi Nian, her attendant, brought her various tonics while discreetly disparaging Chen Qianqian's idleness.
When Su Mu arrived, he informed Chen Yuanyuan that Chen Qianqian had been dispatched to Weimeng Mountain to suppress bandits and had instructed him to oversee Chen Yuanyuan's daily rehabilitation. Surprised and perhaps shamed by her sister's active role, Chen Yuanyuan initially refused to continue, but later, moved by Su Mu's persistent and genuine encouragement, she allowed him to read her private diaries.
In these writings, she revealed her secret desires: to skate, to ride a horse, to fly a kite, and even to visit the Music and Dance Academy. Su Mu promised to fulfill all these wishes if she committed to her rehabilitation. Touched by his sincerity and unique kindness, Chen Yuanyuan overcame her initial shyness, agreed to resume her exercises, and declared Su Mu an honored guest of Risheng Mansion.
Back on the road, Chen Qianqian complained that the carriage felt crowded with three people, hinting for someone to disembark. Su Ziying, feigning humility, offered to get off, but then offered his massage skills, claiming they would alleviate Chen Qianqian's travel fatigue. Han Shuo, again battling for Chen Qianqian's attention, insisted he could also massage her, leading to playful jostling and bickering between the two men.
Han Shuo accused Pei Heng of teaching Su Ziying his kneeling habit, which Chen Qianqian quickly dismissed. At an inn, Bai Ji, mistakenly believing Han Shuo's primary goal was to secretly subdue Meng Guo and not to foster romance with Chen Qianqian, quickly secured three separate rooms for Han Shuo, Chen Qianqian, and Chen Chuchu, much to Han Shuo's dismay.
Bai Ji confidently explained his rationale to Han Shuo, who, realizing Bai Ji had inadvertently aligned with his "actual" ambition to co-opt Meng Guo, silently acquiesced. Chen Qianqian, still determined to unite Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu, drafted two romantic invitation letters, one for each, asking them to meet at a secluded cabin behind the mountain at noon.
She instructed Zi Rui and Su Ziying to deliver them discreetly and then hid to observe, hoping to witness the blossoming of love. However, Han Shuo misinterpreted his letter, believing Chen Chuchu was inviting him to a martial arts duel. What Chen Qianqian envisioned as a romantic idol drama quickly devolved into a full-blown martial arts battle. Han Shuo fought fiercely, showing no mercy, much to Chen Qianqian's exasperation from her hiding spot.
As Han Shuo was about to deliver a decisive blow, Su Ziying, from his own hiding place, intentionally stepped on Zi Rui's foot, eliciting a loud yelp. This noise exposed Chen Qianqian, who awkwardly emerged, trying to praise both of their "equally matched" fighting prowess and calling them a "heaven-made match." Chen Chuchu, believing Han Shuo had deliberately set her up for public humiliation, left in a huff.
Chen Qianqian was frustrated by Han Shuo's "one-track-minded" nature, telling him he was not fit for an idol drama. Han Shuo, however, misinterpreted Chen Qianqian's complaints as jealousy over his interaction with Chen Chuchu, making him delighted. Su Ziying, continuing his subtle manipulations, lectured Han Shuo on "men's ethics" and avoiding upsetting Chen Qianqian, further fueling Han Shuo's misinterpretation of Chen Qianqian's feelings.
Frustrated by her failed matchmaking attempts and Han Shuo's obliviousness, Chen Qianqian secretly tasked Su Ziying with finding a way to bring Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu together, suggesting a "harder" approach might be necessary to spark romance through mutual reliance in peril. Su Ziying, mishearing "peril" (xiǎnjìng) as "trap" (xiànjǐng), ingeniously dug a pit on the marching route and then dispatched a messenger with a false report of Han Shuo being ambushed.
Chen Chuchu, falling for the ruse, rushed to investigate and fell into the trap. Han Shuo, learning of Chen Chuchu's danger, quickly went to rescue her, confirming his earlier suspicion that the ambush report was a diversion orchestrated by Meng Guo. He found Chen Chuchu in the pit with an injured leg and tended to her, noting her resilience compared to Chen Qianqian's more expressive nature.
As they sought refuge in a dilapidated temple, Chen Chuchu, overcome with emotion, confessed her regret at having "given up" Han Shuo to Chen Qianqian. She wondered if, given another chance, Han Shuo would choose her instead. Han Shuo, though acknowledging her feelings and the twist of fate that brought him and Chen Qianqian together, firmly stated his deep love for Chen Qianqian, reaffirming he would always choose the "pure-hearted, upright, and kind" Third Princess.
Meanwhile, Su Ziying, attempting to cook congee for Chen Qianqian at their campsite, unknowingly exposed their location with the smoke. Meng Guo and his bandits attacked, with the specific intent of capturing Chen Qianqian to make her his "wife." Han Shuo, having returned from rescuing Chen Chuchu, arrived just in time to defend Chen Qianqian, taking a blade intended for her. After Meng Guo was captured, Chen Chuchu ordered his execution.
However, Chen Qianqian, recalling that Meng Guo was a key general in the original script, intervened. She convinced everyone, including a hesitant Han Shuo, to spare Meng Guo's life and instead "co-opt" him, making a clever allusion to the famous tale of capturing a rival seven times to win his loyalty. Han Shuo, impressed by her quick thinking and her efforts to protect him, felt his affection for her deepen.
Chen Qianqian, seeing Han Shuo's injury, apologized for causing him to be distracted and wounded. As Chen Chuchu rejoined them, she questioned who had exposed their campsite, realizing that she and Han Shuo had been out all night. Chen Qianqian, piecing together that Su Ziying's cooking fire was the cause, angrily demanded Su Ziying be brought before her for severe punishment.
Episode 12 Recap
After Meng Guo was spared from a death sentence, attention turned to Su Ziying for his negligence. Chen Qianqian suggested sending him back to Pei Heng, but Chen Chuchu found a jade pendant on Su Ziying that matched a piece found in the trap that held her captive. When questioned, Su Ziying admitted it was his family heirloom, claiming he must have broken it by accident. Chen Chuchu pressed further, suggesting he broke it while setting the trap.
Su Ziying then confessed that he had arranged for the trap but insisted Chen Qianqian was not involved. Chen Qianqian tried to explain that her original intention was to trap herself to lure Meng Guo, but Su Ziying quickly interjected, stating that Chen Qianqian had arranged the trap because she knew Chen Chuchu had a crush on Han Shuo and wanted to bring them together.
Chen Qianqian was angered by Su Ziying's directness, as his story, while a lie, seemed more plausible to Chen Chuchu. Han Shuo, upset by Chen Qianqian's matchmaking attempts, accused her of being willful and heartless. Chen Qianqian attempted to explain, but Chen Chuchu dismissed her, sarcastically thanking her and suggesting she should create more such opportunities if she truly wanted Han Shuo to move on.
Chen Chuchu then went to Han Shuo to tend to his injuries with medicine she brought from Huayuan City. She told Han Shuo not to take Chen Qianqian's actions personally, explaining that in Huayuan City, women hold higher status and Chen Qianqian viewed him as a "new toy" she no longer wanted. Su Ziying echoed these sentiments, praising Chen Chuchu's thoughtfulness.
Chen Qianqian, feeling guilty, arrived with her own medicine, only to witness Chen Chuchu and Han Shuo in a seemingly intimate moment. Han Shuo even offered Chen Chuchu some fruit, asking how she knew he liked it. Chen Qianqian, seeing this and noticing Chen Chuchu's sachet on Han Shuo, became furious and left. Han Shuo then instructed Bai Ji to keep a close eye on Su Ziying, wanting to understand Pei Heng's intentions.
As a result of this surveillance, Han Shuo later taunted Chen Qianqian by having Bai Ji announce a dinner menu consisting entirely of various pigeon dishes, revealing that they had been intercepting Su Ziying's messenger pigeons to Pei Heng. Meanwhile, in Huayuan City, the City Lord hosted a banquet. Su Mu, the head musician, was seen visiting the mansion, sparking whispers among the officials.
Chen Yuanyuan, still recovering from her leg injury, publicly awarded Su Mu her personal jade pendant and declared him a guest of honor at Risheng Mansion, ensuring no one would dare disrespect him. This unexpected patronage from the Great Princess further fueled the rumors. Chen Qianqian continued her strategy of "seven captures and seven releases" with Meng Guo, having already released him six times. Meng Guo, aware of her plan, asked if she would release him again.
Chen Chuchu was frustrated by this repeated cycle, but Chen Qianqian insisted that Meng Guo, a brave but simple man, would become a loyal general if genuinely won over. She requested one final chance. A subordinate suggested letting Chen Qianqian make the final decision as the leader of the bandit suppression, to protect Chen Chuchu from any repercussions, noting that news of their actions had surely reached the City Lord's Mansion.
Chen Qianqian ordered Meng Guo's release, and he agreed to a final battle the next day, five kilometers from the camp. At the City Lord's Mansion, news arrived that Chen Qianqian had captured Meng Guo, initially leading to congratulations. However, upon hearing that she had released him again, the City Lord grew angry and questioned Chen Qianqian's repeated actions.
Despite one official's defense of Chen Qianqian as a smart leader with a purpose, the City Lord remained exasperated, wondering what her intentions truly were. For the final battle, Chen Qianqian outlined a plan: she would lure Meng Guo, while Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu would flank him from behind. Han Shuo expressed concern, reminding Chen Qianqian that Meng Guo had once boasted about capturing and possessing her, and asked what she would do if the plan went awry.
Alarmed, Chen Qianqian decided she couldn't act alone. When Han Shuo asked who she wanted to accompany her, she hesitantly suggested Chen Chuchu, who refused, fearing Chen Qianqian would release Meng Guo again. Su Ziying then suggested Chen Qianqian remain at the camp, allowing Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu to proceed separately.
Misinterpreting this as Chen Qianqian's reluctance to be with him, Han Shuo grew angry and left, but not before instructing her to use fireworks as a distress signal if she encountered danger. The next day, the camp was attacked. Zi Rui attempted to launch the signal fireworks but found them soaked and unusable, a deliberate act of sabotage by Su Ziying. Su Ziying appeared, declaring that no one would come to their rescue.
A scout reported to Han Shuo that Meng Guo and his men had bypassed Chen Chuchu's ambush and were headed directly for their camp. Han Shuo immediately realized Meng Guo's true target and soon learned that he had captured Chen Qianqian. Chen Qianqian was brought to the bandit stronghold, which was decorated for a celebration. Inside, she discovered Meng Guo's "vision board," with ambitious goals like "Occupy Huayuan City" and "Get the Dragon Bone," which she dismissed as impossible.
She also saw "Capture the Young City Lord," acknowledging that he had accomplished that much. Meng Guo's men eagerly prepared for a "ceremony." Chen Qianqian, fearing a forced wedding, vehemently resisted, threatening to take her own life. Meng Guo, however, revealed he viewed her six releases as acts of "grace and loyalty," and that she had "discovered" his potential.
He then clarified that the ceremony was for them to become sworn brothers and for her to become the leader of Weimeng Mountain. Seeing his genuine surrender, Chen Qianqian accepted.
She then established three rules for the bandits: no robbing civilian homes (the bandits clarified they only robbed merchant caravans), no kidnapping women (claiming they were often kidnapped by women themselves), and finally, she pointed to the character for "stockade" (寨, zhài) on a banner and, being illiterate, insisted it was written incorrectly. The bandits, amused but loyal, readily agreed to her 'correction' and cheered. Their celebration was cut short by news of an approaching army.
Chen Chuchu, having captured a bandit and learned of the "ceremony," concluded that Meng Guo was forcing Chen Qianqian into marriage. Han Shuo, hearing this, immediately ordered an attack. As the two sides clashed, a drunken Chen Qianqian burst onto the scene. When Chen Chuchu asked if she was alright, Chen Qianqian declared herself the "ruler of Weimeng Mountain," no longer the Young City Lord, even suggesting Chen Chuchu take her place.
In her drunken state, she flirted with Han Shuo, complimenting his looks and trying to "kidnap" him to be her "husband," even attempting to check his abs. Han Shuo embraced her, gently telling her to stop. Tearfully, Chen Qianqian recounted how he had promised to protect her but then got mad and left her alone. Han Shuo apologized profusely. Despite her drunken state, Chen Qianqian declared that Han Shuo "belonged to the heroine."
Han Shuo then commanded all of Weimeng Mountain's bandits to surrender and pledge their loyalty to Chen Qianqian, warning that any disobedience would be met with military punishment. Later, Han Shuo gently chided Chen Qianqian for her heavy drinking. Zi Rui brought a "refreshing soup" from Su Ziying, but a suspicious Chen Qianqian ordered Zi Rui to "keep a closer eye on Su Ziying."
Meanwhile, Su Ziying gave Chen Chuchu a nourishing soup, inwardly vowing to help her reclaim the Young City Lord position. To further his plan, Su Ziying bribed a cook to deliver a message to Han Shuo, ostensibly from Chen Qianqian, inviting him to the inn's storage room. Su Ziying's real plan was to lure Chen Chuchu there as well, lock them both inside, and let an aphrodisiac incense take effect.
Zi Rui overheard this plot and rushed to warn Chen Qianqian. Calling Su Ziying "black-hearted," she raced to the storage room. Han Shuo had already arrived and, noticing the unusual scent of the incense, quickly realized he had been drugged. Chen Qianqian burst in to find him collapsing in pain. As she tried to help him, he grabbed her, his desires fueled by the aphrodisiac, though he fought to restrain himself. The door was locked.
Chen Qianqian instructed Zi Rui, who was outside, not to spread the news and to find Bai Ji for help. Inside, she tried to encourage Han Shuo to endure the ordeal. Su Ziying soon arrived, and the cook informed him that both Han Shuo and Chen Qianqian were locked inside, to Su Ziying's horror, as his plan was to trap Han Shuo with Chen Chuchu.
When the cook confessed to losing the key, Chen Qianqian, still trapped with Han Shuo, mentally lamented her predicament, realizing that as the original author, she had written about aphrodisiac incense but never imagined it would be used on her own main character.
Episode 13 Recap
Han Shuo was severely affected by the potent aphrodisiac incense, struggling to suppress its effects, which could prove fatal if he resisted completely. Chen Qianqian, harboring growing feelings for him, couldn't bear to stand by. She mentally urged him to endure, acknowledging that this was a test of his character. In his distress, Han Shuo expressed regret that their marriage had lacked a proper ceremony and promised to make it up to her if he returned to Huayuan City alive.
Chen Qianqian responded that it was her fault for forcefully marrying him and declared she didn't want him to die. Han Shuo then solemnly swore eternal loyalty, vowing never to betray her. Just as the situation reached its peak, Bai Ji burst through the door with a basin of cold water, dousing both Chen Qianqian and Han Shuo.
Bai Ji explained that Zi Rui and Su Ziying had alerted him to Chen Qianqian's danger, and he had rushed in, fortuitously finding the water. Han Shuo, soaked and furious, interrogated Bai Ji, who cluelessly admitted his mistake and pleaded for another chance. Han Shuo, exasperated, threatened to send Bai Ji back to Xuanhu City, but Bai Ji refused.
Su Ziying and Zi Rui watched the scene in shock, while Chen Qianqian was left utterly bewildered, and Han Shuo glared daggers at Bai Ji. Alone by her bed, Chen Qianqian reflected on the near-consummation. She felt a strange mix of relief and regret, even irritation at Bai Ji for interrupting. She realized that in the storage room, instead of wanting to push Han Shuo away, she had felt a slight anticipation.
This sparked a further realization: she might be falling for Han Shuo. Despite her initial resistance, reminding herself he was a fictional character and they were from different worlds, she couldn't deny his attractiveness – his handsomeness, manliness, and charm. She initially doubted her feelings, as she didn't feel the "heart beating faster" sensation typically associated with love. Just as Chen Qianqian pondered her feelings, Han Shuo entered her room.
The sight of him immediately caused her heart to race, finally revealing to her what falling in love felt like. Han Shuo apologized for his earlier actions, expressing concern for her well-being, though Chen Qianqian jokingly brushed it off. Han Shuo then confessed his deep feelings, recalling how she saved him from his heart condition by stealing the Dragon Bone.
He declared that if she had been born in Xuanhu City, he would have married her with the utmost ceremony, abiding by the principles of the "Three Letters and Six Etiquettes," and promised a lifetime together with no one else between them. He concluded by asking if she now understood his heart. Chen Qianqian was stunned, realizing Han Shuo truly loved her, which explained his earlier reluctance to be paired with Chen Chuchu.
A fluttery sensation in her stomach confirmed her own burgeoning feelings. As he leaned in to kiss her, the intimate moment was abruptly shattered by the sudden appearance of Zi Rui. Su Ziying quickly reported the storage room incident to Chen Chuchu, fabricating a story that placed all blame on an absconded inn pageboy. Chen Chuchu readily accepted this explanation.
Zi Rui, furious at Su Ziying's lies, wanted to expose him, but Chen Qianqian intervened, instructing him to let Su Ziying continue, as she intended to use him to guide the plot back towards Chen Chuchu becoming Young Master. Han Shuo, aware of Su Ziying's manipulative nature, decided against immediate action. He knew killing Su Ziying would be easy but could provide Pei Heng an opportunity to discredit him to Chen Qianqian.
Han Shuo planned to observe Su Ziying, catch him in a clear act of malice against Chen Qianqian, and then expose him to Pei Heng, leaving no room for excuses. Chen Qianqian, understanding Su Ziying's motive was to clear her path for Chen Chuchu to become Young Master, resolved to feign cooperation while secretly monitoring him. She tried to calm her racing heart, acknowledging her own intricate feelings for Han Shuo, which were causing her internal turmoil.
Chen Chuchu invited Chen Qianqian to play chess, a veiled challenge. Chen Qianqian acknowledged Chen Chuchu's long-standing deference, offering to return what "originally belonged" to her, implying the Young Master position. Chen Chuchu, however, revealed her true intentions, questioning the storage room incident and suggesting Chen Qianqian had orchestrated it to trap her and Han Shuo, mirroring a previous scheme.
Chen Qianqian denied it, but Chen Chuchu declared she would no longer back down, openly stating her desire for Han Shuo. Chen Qianqian, despite her own burgeoning feelings for Han Shuo, agreed to arrange a divorce upon their return to Huayuan City, promising to "give him back" to Chen Chuchu, "intact."
As Chen Chuchu declared her victory, Chen Qianqian felt a profound sadness, realizing that while she was putting the plot back on track, it felt like she was losing everything, and the earlier "butterflies" in her stomach had vanished. During the return journey, Han Shuo, seeing Meng Guo and Su Ziying in a carriage with Chen Qianqian, abruptly pulled her out and insisted she ride on his horse, declaring she shouldn't be with other men.
Chen Qianqian, feigning disinterest and even annoyance, told him she didn't like him and accused him of being narcissistic. Han Shuo, however, saw through her words, noting her reluctance to push him away, and insisted she was merely bluffing. Chen Qianqian maintained that they were from different worlds, like Huayuan City and Xuanhu City, and she couldn't sacrifice her own world for him or stay indefinitely.
Han Shuo then asked if she would be with him if the conflicts between the two cities were resolved, but Chen Qianqian simply responded that he would never understand. The successful recruitment of bandits from Weimeng Mountain and the triumphant end of the campaign brought great joy to the City Lord, who showered Chen Qianqian with rewards. Meanwhile, Meng Guo, who had joined Chen Qianqian's household, was being introduced to the city by Su Ziying.
Zi Rui, acting on Chen Qianqian's orders, prevented Meng Guo from entering her study, citing its confidential nature. Su Ziying then met with Pei Heng, subtly poisoning his mind against Han Shuo. He falsely claimed Han Shuo had intercepted letters, endangered Chen Qianqian, fawned over Chen Chuchu, abandoned Chen Qianqian at an inn leading to her capture by Meng Guo, and even tried to sexually assault her using aphrodisiac incense.
Pei Heng, infuriated, promised to ensure Su Ziying remained by Chen Qianqian's side to assist her. At the clan school, Chen Qianqian found Han Shuo's intense gaze overwhelming and decided to use Pei Heng as a shield. She made Pei Heng stand close to her during class and recited a lovesick poem, claiming she missed him while on Weimeng Mountain.
Han Shuo, visibly jealous, questioned her actions, to which Chen Qianqian retorted that she had to be "forward" since Pei Heng wasn't interested. Pei Heng, surprisingly, completed the poem, revealing it was one they learned together as children. This led to a heated, childish argument between Han Shuo and Pei Heng over whether Chen Qianqian understood the poem's romantic meaning. Chen Qianqian, eager to escape, quickly left the class.
A storyteller recounted Chen Qianqian's heroic exploits on Weimeng Mountain, detailing her "empty-city strategy," the "seven captures and seven releases" of Meng Guo, and her overall cleverness in subjugating the bandits, giving her all the credit. The crowd cheered for Chen Qianqian, elevating her public image. Chen Chuchu's maid, Zi Zhu, openly complained that Chen Qianqian merely released the bandits caught by Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu, yet took all the glory.
Chen Qianqian attempted to greet Chen Chuchu, but she was pointedly ignored. Su Ziying, playing the victim, reported to Chen Qianqian that Han Shuo intended to challenge Pei Heng at the theater over the poem incident, claiming Pei Heng, a weak scholar, was in danger. Worried about Pei Heng, Chen Qianqian rushed to the theater. Meanwhile, Han Shuo confronted Pei Heng there, accusing him of inappropriate behavior with his wife.
He declared his own love for Chen Qianqian and vowed to win her heart, prompting a heated exchange where they insulted each other. Han Shuo then directly questioned Pei Heng about Su Ziying's loyalty and his repeated attempts to harm Chen Qianqian. Pei Heng acknowledged Su Ziying as his trusted subordinate, implying knowledge of his actions, causing Han Shuo to suspect Pei Heng was behind Su Ziying's schemes.
Bai Ji, however, argued that Pei Heng, who loved Chen Qianqian, wouldn't harm her, suggesting he might only harm Han Shuo. Han Shuo decided to gather evidence against Su Ziying to expose him to Pei Heng later. Chen Qianqian arrived to find Pei Heng had already left. She confronted Han Shuo, accusing him of jealousy and petty behavior for inviting Pei Heng to watch plays about unfaithful women.
She reiterated that she was the one who initiated the poem exchange and chastised Han Shuo for his narrow-mindedness. Han Shuo, frustrated by her constant siding with Pei Heng, expressed hurt that she never considered his feelings. Chen Qianqian, exasperated and feigning indifference to push him away, declared their marriage over and told him to leave, causing Han Shuo to question if that was truly what she meant. Distraught by the situation, Chen Qianqian decided to leave.
Han Shuo, seeking to appear magnanimous after their recent argument, sent an invitation to Pei Heng to join him for a talk, also inviting Meng Guo and Su Ziying. Chen Qianqian, knowing Han Shuo's intentions were likely less than sincere, was surprised to find all of them gathered. Han Shuo claimed he was reflecting on the "woman divorcing her husband" play they had seen earlier.
Wanting to embody Huayuan City's values of male virtue and generosity, he had gathered them to ask how they would handle such a situation. Meng Guo tried to diffuse the tension by clumsily admitting his past attraction to Chen Qianqian but then toasted everyone. Su Ziying declared his loyalty to Chen Qianqian, regardless of her choice, slyly implying Han Shuo was playing a dangerous game.
Pei Heng, in response to Han Shuo's direct question about the play, sarcastically praised the wine, while Zi Rui quickly covered for him. Chen Qianqian, frustrated by the forced drama, wished to fast-forward through the scene. She attempted to soften her previous harsh words to Han Shuo, suggesting their relationship was complicated and couldn't be taken too seriously, to protect her "public image."
When Pei Heng tried to respond, Chen Qianqian feigned extreme drunkenness, and Zi Rui swiftly helped her retreat from the uncomfortable gathering. Once away, Chen Qianqian admitted she wasn't drunk and asked Zi Rui about Su Ziying. Zi Rui reported that Su Ziying had recently tried to enter her study multiple times but was blocked. Chen Qianqian instructed Zi Rui to allow Su Ziying entry next time, eager to see what he planned to do.
Episode 14 Recap
Chen Qianqian, having foresight into the original storyline, strategically arranged for Zi Rui to pretend to be asleep in the storeroom. As expected, Su Ziying discreetly placed a defense map there and then sent a secret report to Chen Chuchu. Realizing Su Ziying's intention to frame her, Chen Qianqian decided to allow the plot to unfold, hoping to use this opportunity to relinquish her position as Young City Owner.
Upon receiving the anonymous tip-off, Chen Chuchu swiftly assembled her guards and headed to Yueli Mansion. However, she found that an accuser had already arrived. Su Ziying, who worked in Chen Qianqian's mansion, now reported her for plotting rebellion. As Chen Chuchu's forces began their search, no defense map was found. Su Ziying, convinced of his own discovery, led them to the alleged hiding spot, but instead of the map, they uncovered a collection of portraits of Pei Heng.
Han Shuo had anticipated Su Ziying's scheme and had Bai Ji secretly swap the defense map with these portraits. Pei Heng arrived shortly after, witnessing the scene and the scattered portraits of himself. Su Ziying, cornered, desperately insisted that Chen Qianqian was cunning and must have replaced the map after noticing his intentions.
When accused of colluding with Chen Chuchu, Su Ziying quickly denied her involvement, claiming he acted alone due to a deep-seated private grudge against Chen Qianqian, whom he believed was brutal and undeserving of her position. Chen Qianqian, bewildered, wondered when she had ever offended him. Chen Chuchu, despite the chaotic outcome, ordered Su Ziying to be imprisoned for framing the Young City Owner, awaiting his punishment.
Later, Han Shuo came to Chen Qianqian, revealing his role in swapping the map. He proudly declared that he would always protect her and gloated that Pei Heng would now be too ashamed to face her. Chen Qianqian was furious, accusing him of ruining her plan and humiliating both her and Pei Heng. She mockingly suggested they divorce if he was so bothered by the situation.
Han Shuo immediately backtracked, offering an excuse that the portraits were likely old, forgotten items she kept out of youthful curiosity. He then warned her not to mention divorce again. Word of Chen Qianqian secretly keeping Pei Heng's portraits quickly spread, damaging Pei Heng's reputation and sparking city-wide gossip. Despite the scandal, Pei Heng, who had secretly harbored feelings for Chen Qianqian, visited her.
He dismissed her apologies, expressed his enduring affection, and confessed that he now understood his true feelings for her after Han Shuo's appearance. Pei Heng declared that he would no longer yield her to anyone and had already requested the City Owner to annul her marriage to Han Shuo so that he could marry her as per their childhood engagement. Distraught, Chen Qianqian rushed to her mother, the City Owner, adamantly denying any romantic feelings for Pei Heng.
Her mother, however, questioned her sincerity given the discovered portraits and expressed her long-standing disapproval of Han Shuo's character, favoring the familiar and dependable Pei Heng. Chen Qianqian proposed a compromise: she would agree to divorce Han Shuo but pleaded not to be forced into marrying Pei Heng, reasoning that she couldn't break Pei Heng's heart right after Han Shuo's.
The City Owner agreed not to push her into an immediate marriage with Pei Heng but insisted on the divorce from Han Shuo. Chen Qianqian asked for time to discuss it with Han Shuo, describing him as a "tiger with a bad temper" who needed careful handling. Meanwhile, in prison, Su Ziying desperately demanded to see Chen Chuchu.
Later, a servant from Pei Heng's mansion delivered a box of red beans to Chen Qianqian, explicitly stating they were a token of love, not for cooking. Han Shuo, witnessing this, became enraged, throwing the servant out and ordering Bai Ji to scatter the red beans at Pei Heng's gate. He passionately reiterated his love for Chen Qianqian, declaring he couldn't live without her, and subtly warned her that he could become uncontrollable if pushed too far.
Feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about her true feelings and the chaotic plot, Chen Qianqian sought advice from the three old storytellers. Using fruit analogies, she described Pei Heng (Peach) confessing to her (Orange) and her fear of Han Shuo (Banana) reacting violently, recalling his original destructive tendencies.
She reminisced about two crucial scenes from her original script's ending: Chen Yuanyuan (Apple's sister) choosing Su Mu as her husband during the Double Seventh Festival's embroidered ball event, and Han Shuo's subsequent bombing of the city, which would injure the City Owner. With the Double Seventh Festival fast approaching, Chen Qianqian worried that Han Shuo, despite the changed circumstances, might still revert to his original violent plan. Unbeknownst to Chen Qianqian, Han Shuo met with Xuanhu City officials.
They informed him of their City Owner's orders to plant explosives and assassinate Huayuan's City Owner during the festival parade, aiming to conquer Huayuan City in the resulting chaos. They pressed him to act, reminding him that his heart ailment was cured and the black stone mine awaited. Han Shuo, however, remained hesitant, asserting that the time was not right yet and warning them against acting rashly.
The officials expressed their frustration, accusing him of wavering for a woman and reminding him that Chen Qianqian could become his maidservant after their victory. At a banquet hosted by Chen Qianqian in her mother's stead, Chen Chuchu, under the influence of alcohol, cornered Han Shuo and confessed her feelings for him, recalling when he saved her. Han Shuo firmly rejected her advances, advising her to keep her feelings to herself to avoid causing trouble, especially for Chen Qianqian.
Chen Chuchu retorted, questioning why Chen Qianqian had everything when she didn't even truly love him and hadn't yet rejected Pei Heng's engagement. Han Shuo vowed to invalidate that engagement. During the banquet, Xuanhu officials, deliberately provocative, demanded that Chen Qianqian pour them wine or perform a dance. Pei Heng intervened, defending Chen Qianqian's status and Huayuan City's custom of female superiority.
Chen Qianqian then facetiously offered to have Han Shuo perform a dance, recalling his past performance at the Music and Dance Academy, which prompted the Xuanhu officials to quickly back down, unwilling to embarrass their Young Master. The City Owner, having observed the Xuanhu officials' early arrival and suspicious conduct, ordered Chen Chuchu to covertly investigate the city's defenses.
She also decided to test Han Shuo's true feelings for Chen Qianqian by ordering their divorce and arranging Chen Qianqian's marriage to Pei Heng, leaking this news to Han Shuo. Han Shuo's jealousy surged, deepening his indecision regarding the Xuanhu invasion plan. Later, as Pei Heng walked Chen Qianqian home, he reiterated his love and devotion. Chen Qianqian, however, clearly rejected his romantic advances, stating that her feelings for him were of friendship, not romantic love.
She then asked him to inform her mother that he didn't love her, hoping to annul the marriage order. The next day, Chen Qianqian visited her elder sister Chen Yuanyuan and found Su Mu attending to her. Chen Qianqian asked Su Mu to spend more time with Pei Heng to help him cope with her rejection. While doing so, she inadvertently mentioned Su Mu and Chen Yuanyuan's mutual affection, "spoiling" their unacknowledged feelings. Chen Yuanyuan was initially flustered but soon smiled upon realizing the truth in her sister's words. Chen Qianqian quickly made her exit.
Episode 15 Recap
Han Shuo's subordinate, Bai Ji, inquired about the City Owner's sudden order for Han Shuo and Chen Qianqian to divorce. Han Shuo suspected it stemmed from the Xuanhu City envoys' visit, which had likely aroused the City Owner's suspicions. Bai Ji urged Han Shuo to consider severing ties with Chen Qianqian, emphasizing their distinct city allegiances, and suggested that if Han Shuo were to conquer Huayuan City, Chen Qianqian would inevitably become his. Han Shuo, however, remained non-committal.
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Han Shuo, Xuanhu City envoys, under orders from their City Owner, were surreptitiously burying explosives throughout Huayuan, with an official reminding his men to be cautious of the volatile contents. During Huayuan City's annual hunting gathering, the City Owner reiterated her demand for Chen Qianqian to divorce Han Shuo. Chen Qianqian requested more time, expressing her strong dislike for Pei Heng and dismissing the idea of choosing a husband based on superficial qualities.
The City Owner, however, insisted on Pei Heng's superiority. Pei Heng, overhearing, tried to reassure Chen Qianqian, suggesting they remain friends. Chen Qianqian, hoping to thwart her mother's plans, urged Pei Heng to pretend to reject her, but Pei Heng subtly indicated his unwavering intention to pursue her, promising to address the matter with the City Owner at an opportune moment and ensuring she wouldn't be burdened.
When Han Shuo arrived, the City Owner openly challenged his love for Chen Qianqian, demanding proof. She introduced a new custom: a princess's husband must wear a permanent copper bracelet engraved with the family crest, symbolizing his allegiance. Han Shuo pointed out that in Xuanhu City, such marks were reserved for servants, and this custom did not exist in Huayuan City. The City Owner declared that the tradition would begin with him, contrasting his hesitation with Pei Heng's supposed willingness.
When Han Shuo asked what would happen if he refused, the City Owner stated that he should end the marriage. Han Shuo felt coerced but did not immediately yield. The City Owner then shifted focus to her other daughters, announcing her intention to find husbands for them as the Double Seventh Festival was approaching. Chen Yuanyuan initially declined, feeling weary.
Chen Qianqian, aware of Chen Yuanyuan's affection for Su Mu, privately proposed that Chen Yuanyuan host an embroidered ball ceremony, confident she could manipulate events for Su Mu to catch it. Later, Chen Qianqian approached Su Mu, inquiring why he had stopped helping Chen Yuanyuan with her rehabilitation. She encouraged him to embrace the opportunity, but Su Mu, citing his humble status and concern for Chen Yuanyuan's reputation, refused, frustrating Chen Qianqian.
During the hunt, as Chen Qianqian retrieved a rabbit shot by Chen Chuchu, Chen Chuchu aimed another arrow, intending to kill her. Han Shuo swiftly intervened, shooting Chen Chuchu's arrow mid-air. Feigning ignorance, Chen Qianqian calmly took the rabbit away. Han Shuo then sternly warned Chen Chuchu against harming Chen Qianqian again, proclaiming his unwavering devotion to her alone. Chen Qianqian, hidden nearby, overheard their exchange, including Chen Chuchu's retort that she didn't deserve him.
Later, Su Ziying, having broken out of prison, secretly met with Chen Chuchu. He presented an intercepted document, revealing Xuanhu City's plan to detonate explosives and attack Huayuan City during the Double Seventh Festival. Professing his loyalty, Su Ziying offered to help Chen Chuchu usurp Chen Qianqian's position by capturing Han Shuo and implicating her. Chen Chuchu recalled saving a young Su Ziying from a beating by Chen Qianqian years ago, which made her trust him more.
Citing her inability to deploy City Guards without approval, Chen Chuchu was prompted by Su Ziying to seek help from Pei Heng, whose private soldiers were renowned. She visited Pei Heng, proposing an alliance: she would help him win Chen Qianqian if he lent her his troops to expose Han Shuo's malicious intentions. After some consideration, Pei Heng agreed. Meanwhile, Han Shuo went to the armory.
A craftsman explained the forging process: a mold would be affixed to the wrist, and molten metal poured in, fusing permanently with the skin. Han Shuo viewed it as a cruel humiliation, akin to the branding of slaves in Xuanhu City. However, he agreed to undergo the ordeal on the condition that the City Owner withdraw the marriage proposal between Chen Qianqian and Pei Heng.
Despite the agonizing pain, Han Shuo endured it silently, managing a faint, pale smile once it was complete. The next day, as the Double Seventh Festival began, Han Shuo attempted to approach Chen Qianqian, but she consistently avoided him, citing her busy schedule. When Han Shuo pressed her, expressing his hurt at her evasion, Chen Qianqian, steeling herself to push him away, cruelly told him he only knew how to threaten her, implicitly accepting the divorce.
Deeply wounded, Han Shuo walked away. He then met with the Xuanhu officials, who confirmed all detonation points were prepared. With "the arrow on the string," Han Shuo felt he had no choice but to proceed with the attack. In the city, Lu Peng had become the new top musician at the Music and Dance Academy. The embroidered ball ceremony for Chen Yuanyuan attracted many bachelors, including Lu Peng.
Chen Qianqian had a plan to ensure Su Mu, who briefly appeared, would catch the ball. However, Su Mu overheard the crowd's disparaging remarks about his low status and left dejectedly. As Chen Qianqian was about to execute her plan, she overheard townspeople discussing Han Shuo's forced wearing of the humiliating copper bracelet. Overwhelmed with remorse, she realized the extent of his sacrifice.
Zi Rui then reported seeing Han Shuo overseeing the transport of many boxes, which Bai Ji had called "special local products" for a "big surprise." Chen Qianqian immediately understood they were explosives. Realizing Han Shuo was about to bomb the city, Chen Qianqian frantically handed the embroidered ball to Zi Rui, instructing him to give it only to Su Mu, and rushed to find Han Shuo.
She confronted Chen Chuchu, who revealed she already knew of the plan and had deployed Pei Heng's soldiers to ambush Han Shuo, intending to use his treachery to solidify her claim as successor. Appalled by her sister's ambition, Chen Qianqian accused her of sacrificing Han Shuo for power, but Chen Chuchu had her confined, blaming her erratic behavior for Han Shuo's actions.
Moved by Chen Qianqian's tearful pleas, Pei Heng helped her escape, making her vow not to be swayed by Han Shuo again. They split up to search for him, but Han Shuo suddenly appeared and pulled Chen Qianqian aside. Back at the ceremony, heartbroken by Su Mu's absence, Chen Yuanyuan defiantly threw the ball to decide her own fate. Despite Zi Rui and Meng Guo's attempts to intervene, the musician Lu Peng caught it.
Chen Yuanyuan boldly declared that the one who caught the ball would be her husband, specifically stating her intent to marry a musician. Seeing the permanent copper bracelet on Han Shuo's wrist, Chen Qianqian was overcome with guilt. She finally confessed her love for him, promising to stay by his side. Han Shuo was overjoyed. However, his expression changed as he spotted the City Owner's parade vehicle approaching. Without another word, Han Shuo ignited the fuse.
Episode 16 Recap
As the fuse was lit, soldiers who had been ambushed throughout Huayuan City prepared for the expected explosion. However, instead of the anticipated destruction, the sky erupted with colorful and beautiful fireworks. Han Shuo had secretly drugged the Xuanhu City envoy and replaced all the explosives with fireworks prior to the plan's execution.
His aide, Bai Ji, worried about defying the Xuanhu City Owner, but Han Shuo knew that harming Huayuan City or its owner would permanently sever his relationship with Chen Qianqian, leaving no room for reconciliation. When Chen Qianqian asked if he regretted his past actions, he then asked if her recent confession of liking him was sincere. Before she could answer, she kissed him, confirming her feelings.
The Huayuan City Owner was deeply moved by Han Shuo’s unexpected change of heart, which led him to abandon the city siege plan and the conflict between the two cities for Chen Qianqian's sake. She bowed towards Xuanhu City, expressing gratitude for such a capable son-in-law. Chen Qianqian then declared she no longer wished for a divorce. Meanwhile, Chen Yuanyuan was despondent after Lu Peng caught the embroidered ball, meaning he was to become her husband.
Chen Qianqian rushed to apologize and promised to resolve the issue. However, Lu Peng arrived uninvited at Yuanyuan's mansion, bearing chestnut cakes from Maixiangcun and bringing his luggage, ready to move in. He brazenly stated that all his future possessions, including himself, would belong to her after their marriage, implying he intended to live off her. Left with no choice, Chen Yuanyuan instructed Zi Nian to find Lu Peng a separate property.
Soon after, Su Mu arrived, returning the jade pendant Chen Yuanyuan had given him earlier as a love token. He expressed his unworthiness to wear it and warned Chen Yuanyuan about Lu Peng's ill nature, predicting she would regret marrying him. When Chen Yuanyuan offered to marry him instead of Lu Peng, Su Mu humbly refused, stating his identity as a musician made him an unsuitable match and arguing that she should look beyond immediate desires.
Chen Yuanyuan felt that everyone was making decisions for her and not truly caring about what she wanted. Back at her mansion, Chen Qianqian expressed her disdain for men like Lu Peng, calling them "gigolos" who live off women and covet their assets. Han Shuo, overhearing her, initially thought she was criticizing him, causing him a moment of panic before realizing she was referring to Lu Peng. Relieved, their conversation dissolved into tender confessions, strengthening their bond.
They reluctantly said goodnight, exchanging affectionate nicknames, much to the exasperation of Zi Rui and Bai Ji. Later that night, Chen Qianqian was lost in thoughts of Han Shuo when he secretly entered her room through the window. Zi Rui, alerted by the noise, came to check, but Chen Qianqian quickly sent him away with a series of fabricated excuses.
Han Shuo presented her with some pastries he had brought from the kitchen, concerned she might be hungry, which she happily ate despite them being crumbled. Since Zi Rui was still guarding her door, Han Shuo had no choice but to stay the night. He assured Chen Qianqian he understood her reserved nature and would not force anything, promising to wait until she was ready to consummate their marriage.
He covered her with a blanket and extinguished the candle, holding her close. When he leaned in for a kiss, Chen Qianqian, flustered, gently pushed him away and turned over, closing her eyes happily. Han Shuo then offered to help her deal with the troublesome Lu Peng, reminding her that he could solve any problem she caused. The next morning, gossip about Han Shuo and Chen Qianqian spending the night together spread quickly through the Clan School.
Han Shuo accompanied Chen Qianqian to class, holding her hand, their affection enraging Chen Chuchu, especially after a student suggested Chen Qianqian was merely "playing hard-to-get" to make Han Shuo fall for her. Pei Heng then announced his resignation as Minister of Education, lamenting that despite becoming the most respected man in Huayuan City, he could not possess Chen Qianqian.
He regretted not realizing his love for her sooner, feeling unwilling to accept losing her after growing up together and being engaged for so long. Han Shuo felt a pang of jealousy. After Pei Heng's departure, Su Mu returned to the Music and Dance Academy, hanging his shingle once again. Many women flocked to see him, but he found their attention tiresome.
Meanwhile, Lu Peng, determined to win the City Owner's favor, had a bracelet with a family crest custom-made and wore it, visiting the City Owner's mansion daily. He believed his proactive approach and the City Owner's parental authority over marriages would secure his union with Chen Yuanyuan. During one such visit, he overheard Chen Chuchu vehemently arguing with the City Owner.
Chen Chuchu accused Han Shuo of initially planning to use explosives on the night of the Double Seventh Festival and demanded to search Yueli Mansion for evidence, feeling that her mother was protecting Han Shuo and Chen Qianqian. The City Owner revealed she had been aware of Han Shuo's original plan but he had given it up for Chen Qianqian, contrasting this with Chen Chuchu's ambition for the Crown Princess's position, which she felt put the entire city at risk.
Chen Chuchu retorted with a long-held grievance, accusing her mother of favoritism towards Chen Qianqian and never acknowledging her. Overwhelmed with anger and stress, the City Owner collapsed, suffering a stroke. Chen Qianqian, learning of her mother's illness and Chen Chuchu's role in it, was deeply disappointed.
As the Crown Princess, she immediately declared martial law throughout the city, suppressed news of the City Owner's condition, and ordered Sang Qi to confine Chen Chuchu to Xingzi Mansion, punishing her with copying the Classic of Filial Piety 100 times. Chen Chuchu complained about the unfair treatment compared to Chen Qianqian's past actions. Su Ziying, seizing the opportunity, advised Chen Chuchu on how to navigate the situation and regain control. Chen Chuchu declared she would have both power and Han Shuo, recalling that Lu Peng had witnessed her argument with the City Owner.
Episode 17 Recap
Lu Peng, relying on his status as the Princess Royal's future husband, became increasingly arrogant. He frequently visited the Music and Dance Academy to provoke Su Mu and even insulted Princess Chen Yuanyuan. Enraged by Lu Peng's disrespect towards Chen Yuanyuan, Su Mu fiercely beat him. That night, Su Ziying, acting on orders from Chen Chuchu, ambushed an injured Lu Peng in an alley and killed him with a knife, stating that anyone who obstructs the Second Princess must die.
Chen Qianqian was buried in official documents as she took over the City Lord's duties. She expressed her weariness and concern about Xuanhu City's intentions to Han Shuo. Han Shuo reassured her, promising that Xuanhu City would not attack as long as he was there. Just then, Bai Ji reported that Lu Peng had been found dead in an alley. This news disturbed Chen Qianqian.
She realized that despite her interventions, the plot seemed to be reverting to its original tragic course, where Han Shuo (whom she internally referred to as "Banana") would face Chen Chuchu (her "Apple") in battle, leading to Bai Ji's sacrifice and Han Shuo's eventual death at Chen Chuchu's hands. She worried that character destinies, once set, might be unchangeable. Meanwhile, Lin Qi was secretly planning to frame Han Shuo for Lu Peng's murder.
She believed Han Shuo was unworthy of Chen Chuchu's affection, especially after he chose Chen Qianqian and caused Pei Heng to leave the clan school. She intended to use Lu Peng's death to avenge Chen Chuchu and teach Chen Qianqian a lesson. Although her subordinate questioned the wisdom of framing the Young Master of Xuanhu City, Lin Qi was resolute.
She believed Han Shuo would face severe punishment for killing the Princess Royal's fiancé, perhaps even being sent to the Music and Dance Academy under her care, which would humble Chen Qianqian. Lin Qi confirmed that the fabricated murder weapon and evidence were ready to be planted in Han Shuo's residence that night. Aware of Lin Qi's scheme, Chen Qianqian immediately led her guards to Lin Qi's residence, brushing aside Lin Qi's protests.
She accused Lin Qi of killing Lu Peng and attempting to frame Han Shuo. A search revealed an account book containing a drawing of a weapon matching the murder weapon's dimensions, which Lin Qi unconvincingly claimed was for "customization." Crucially, a shingle bearing Han Shuo's name, intended for use at the Music and Dance Academy, was also found. Chen Qianqian confronted Lin Qi, suggesting she was planning for Han Shuo to be disgraced.
Furious, Chen Qianqian declared, "How dare you touch my man?" and ordered Lin Qi's arrest, asserting her authority in Huayuan City. Lin Qi accused Chen Qianqian of being a "rascal" and conducting a baseless investigation. Chen Qianqian internally confirmed her suspicion that Lin Qi was indeed the culprit, feeling a sense of relief that the plot wasn't simply unfolding on its own, but rather through Lin Qi's actions.
Su Ziying reported Lin Qi's predicament to Chen Chuchu, who was annoyed by Lin Qi's recklessness and feared being implicated due to their close association. Su Ziying suggested solidifying Lin Qi's guilt to put the matter to rest. At a public hearing, Chen Chuchu disregarded pleas for leniency and, in front of the assembled officials, demanded a death sentence for Lin Qi.
Chen Qianqian, recalling that Lin Qi was supposed to die in her original story, fiercely opposed the death penalty. She worried that if Lin Qi's fate remained unchanged, Han Shuo's would too, concluding that Lin Qi "must not die." She mitigated the sentence to banishment, citing the Lin family's long service to Huayuan City and admitting her own hasty investigation.
Chen Chuchu, still under house arrest but present to "uphold the law," publicly challenged Chen Qianqian's leniency, accusing her of emotional judgment and favoritism. Chen Qianqian visited Lin Qi in her prison cell. Lin Qi, defiant, accused Chen Qianqian of gloating and threw past accusations at her, calling her the most willful. Chen Qianqian countered by claiming that Chen Chuchu had pleaded tirelessly for Lin Qi's life, which led to the mitigated sentence.
Lin Qi, though still hostile, believed this lie. Chen Qianqian then announced Lin Qi's banishment to Xuanhu City, a place "where men take charge," much to Lin Qi's dismay, who preferred death. Chen Qianqian offered Lin Qi a Huayuan City golden token for protection, but Lin Qi scornfully refused it. Lin Qi then questioned why Chen Chuchu hadn't visited her; Chen Qianqian lied, saying she had confined Chen Chuchu for constantly pestering her.
Lin Qi became enraged, shouting at Chen Qianqian to release Chen Chuchu. Chen Qianqian left, privately relieved to have saved Lin Qi's life, hoping this would in turn safeguard Han Shuo's. A guard later reported to Chen Qianqian that Lin Qi had set off on her journey, and her instructions to the accompanying guards to care for Lin Qi had been passed on. Chen Qianqian feigned indifference. On the road, Lin Qi complained about the slow pace.
The guards, mentioning that a "superior" had ordered them to care for her, clarified it was the Crown Princess Chen Qianqian, not the Second Princess Chen Chuchu, much to Lin Qi's astonishment. Suddenly, black-clad assassins attacked, killing the guards. Lin Qi fought back, managed to unmask one assailant, revealing a subordinate of Chen Chuchu, and was then struck by an arrow, falling into a river, her fate unknown. The news of Lin Qi's death deeply unsettled Chen Qianqian.
She confided in her internal "Masters" (her inner writer self) that despite her efforts to alter the plot, Lin Qi still died as originally intended. She understood that she was now an active participant in the story she created, losing control over its narrative. To protect Han Shuo (her "Banana") from his tragic end, she decided to send him "outside the story," believing that only then could he truly be safe.
This, she acknowledged, would mean an early exit for Han Shuo, transforming his ending into a "tragedy" for herself (her "Orange"). Her inner voice mused that happiness often follows suffering, and this was the trial she must endure. Chen Qianqian, visibly distraught, discussed her fears about Chen Yuanyuan and Su Mu with Han Shuo.
Han Shuo, understanding Su Mu's concerns about public opinion if he were to marry Chen Yuanyuan, offered to go in Chen Qianqian's stead to persuade Su Mu at a tea house meeting. Chen Qianqian agreed, claiming she would visit her mother, the City Lord. She then secretly instructed Zi Rui to accompany her to find Pei Heng.
Zi Rui expressed concern about her meeting Pei Heng after her earlier intimacy with Han Shuo, reminding her of past instances where she had knelt before Han Shuo in apology. Chen Qianqian admitted she feared Han Shuo's anger. She met Pei Heng, who readily agreed to help her. At the tea house, Han Shuo met Su Mu, explaining Chen Qianqian's absence.
Meanwhile, Chen Yuanyuan arrived at the Music and Dance Academy, only to learn that Su Mu had not returned since meeting Han Shuo the previous night. Fearing he had met the same grim fate as Lu Peng, Chen Yuanyuan began posting notices for his disappearance. Back at the mansion, Han Shuo expressed regret for not escorting Su Mu back. Chen Qianqian changed the subject, inquiring about the "shadow guards" Han Shuo brought from Xuanhu City for intelligence.
Bai Ji tried to stop her, but Chen Qianqian complained about her lack of martial arts, lamenting that the poisoned wine had stripped her of her skills. Han Shuo, ignoring Bai Ji's protests, handed Chen Qianqian his command token, the sole means to control his loyal guards, who would protect its bearer with their lives. Surprised by his trust, Chen Qianqian questioned if she was worthy.
Han Shuo assured her she was, then playfully chided her for not yet calling him "husband" despite giving her his "possessions and life." Chen Qianqian, looking at him, finally called him "husband." She then urged them to hurry and find Su Mu, admitting her worry. Internally, Chen Qianqian revealed her true intention: "Only by pushing Han Shuo out of the story completely, can I save his life."
Episode 18 Recap
Gossip spread widely regarding Su Mu's disappearance. Given that only Han Shuo's footprints were found at the scene and other musicians' testimonies placed him as the last person to see Su Mu, he became the primary suspect. During the inquiry, musicians recalled Han Shuo and Su Mu quarreling at a teahouse, connecting it to Chen Qianqian and Pei Heng, and suspecting Su Mu's disappearance was linked to their animosity towards Han Shuo.
Han Shuo acknowledged he had gone to meet Su Mu in Chen Qianqian's stead. The Criminal Minister presented a piece of Su Mu's belt found in an alley near the Music and Dance Academy, along with footprints identified as belonging to Han Shuo’s unique waterproof, non-slip shoes, which Chen Qianqian had made for him. Han Shuo denied having a quarrel.
Chen Qianqian, receiving praise for upholding the law, encouraged Han Shuo to cooperate with the investigation, promising to secure his release once the truth was clear. Han Shuo, for her sake, agreed to be taken to the prison. Once incarcerated, Han Shuo was offered tea by the Criminal Minister, stating it was from Chen Qianqian.
The tea was secretly drugged, and after drinking it, Han Shuo was presented with new "evidence" – the shadow guard token he had entrusted to Chen Qianqian. It was then that he realized Chen Qianqian had orchestrated the entire plot against him, causing him to collapse. Han Shuo awoke to Pei Heng proclaiming his banishment to the southern frontier, where he would be heavily guarded and forbidden from ever returning to Huayuan City or Xuanhu City.
Pei Heng also handed him a divorce letter personally written by Chen Qianqian. Han Shuo, distraught and refusing to believe Chen Qianqian could be so ruthless, was convinced she was hiding something or that Pei Heng was manipulating the situation, and demanded to see her. To shatter Han Shuo's remaining hope, Pei Heng led him to Yueli Mansion to meet Chen Qianqian. Chen Qianqian, fully aware of the original storyline where Han Shuo would die, confronted him.
She falsely claimed she had never truly loved him, asserting that all her actions were a calculated scheme to use him as a bargaining chip against Xuanhu City. She recounted how their "love at first sight" was a lie, how she had "stolen" him, and how her theft of the Dragon Bone was merely a move to earn his trust, as he was nothing more than a "living amulet" to her.
She even revealed that the "Soul Missing Powder" he believed he ingested was just syrup, designed to make him feel guilty and compliant, turning him from a "tiger" into an "obedient little cat," leading him to wear her bracelet, exchange explosives for fireworks, and give her his token. She coldly explained that she wouldn't banish him to the southern frontier to be rescued by Xuanhu spies but would imprison him in a secret location, heavily guarded.
If Xuanhu City ever threatened Huayuan, she would order his execution, as he was the Xuanhu City Owner's only son. When Han Shuo desperately asked if she had ever felt genuine affection for him, even for a moment, she flatly replied, "No." Han Shuo noticed the stamp he had carved for her on a nearby table, a symbol of their bond, clinging to a sliver of hope that she was merely putting on an act.
To thoroughly sever his illusions, Chen Qianqian picked up the stamp and deliberately smashed it on the ground, its fragments mirroring his shattered heart and memories. Heartbroken, Han Shuo, despite the agonizing pain, forcefully broke and discarded the bracelet Chen Qianqian had given him, declaring their relationship "through" from that moment on.
Watching his desolate figure walk away, Zi Rui expressed his pity for Han Shuo and questioned Chen Qianqian, wondering why she had conspired with Pei Heng and Su Mu to frame and divorce him, and why she had instructed him to embed a white jade bottle in the wall. Chen Qianqian remained silent. Later, she was seen crying profusely under a tree in the rain, with Pei Heng silently standing beside her, holding an umbrella.
In the days that followed, Chen Qianqian plunged into a drunken stupor, constantly demanding entertainment from musicians, who eventually pleaded for mercy from exhaustion and were promptly dismissed. Pei Heng, understanding Chen Qianqian's lingering affection for Han Shuo, carefully collected and reassembled the broken stamp. He told her she didn't need to hide her true feelings from him and offered to be her comfort, but she gently declined. Meanwhile, Su Mu sought out Chen Yuanyuan to bid her farewell.
He offered her earnest advice on caring for herself, including eating on time, avoiding cold tea, and not sitting in drafts, even suggesting she read comic books like Chen Qianqian instead of just medical texts. Chen Yuanyuan, confused by his words, questioned whether he truly cared for her.
Su Mu, however, denied having any feelings for her, claiming that as a "dissipated musician" and a "plaything," a relationship with her would only make them "a constant topic of conversation," repaying her kindness with malice. He asked if she had ever considered his feelings. He wished her well and hoped she would "find a good match."
As Su Mu turned to leave, Chen Yuanyuan instinctively reached out to stop him and, in an astonishing moment, stood up and took a step. But Su Mu did not look back. Chen Qianqian, sitting by her mother's bedside, confessed all the recent events, particularly her decision to send Han Shuo away, explaining that it was for his own good to save him from his scripted tragic end.
As she poured out her heart, the City Owner slowly regained consciousness and was even able to sit up and eat. The City Owner was displeased to hear about Han Shuo's departure but acknowledged Chen Qianqian's filial piety had moved the heavens. Chen Qianqian then informed her mother about Lu Peng's murder and Chen Yuanyuan's subsequent illness, requesting that any talk of Chen Yuanyuan's engagement be postponed.
The City Owner revealed that Lu Peng had been present during her argument with Chen Chuchu, leading Chen Qianqian to suspect Chen Chuchu's involvement in Lu Peng's death. She also became suspicious of Chen Chuchu's continuous "copying of the Classic of Filial Piety" while supposedly confined in her mansion. Chen Qianqian instructed her attendant to deliver the "copied" texts to the City Owner's mansion, cautioning them to ensure no one realized Chen Chuchu was actually absent from the city.
Chen Qianqian pondered whether Chen Chuchu had a greater motive than Lin Qi to kill Lu Peng, and if uncovering the truth could still alter Han Shuo's predetermined fate now that her mother was awake. Meanwhile, Su Ziying, utilizing his tracking skills honed in the military, helped Chen Chuchu find Han Shuo's actual location after intercepting an empty prison cart, which they realized was a diversion set up by Chen Qianqian.
Su Ziying had deduced Han Shuo's true hiding place by analyzing the signs of wear on a few maps in Chen Qianqian's study. Observing Han Shuo’s distress and refusal to eat, Chen Chuchu urged him to do so. She offered him an alliance, stating that she would not sit by while he was in trouble and criticized Chen Qianqian's faithless nature, hoping to leverage Han Shuo's unforgiving and vengeful character.
Chen Chuchu admitted she needed Han Shuo's help to reclaim the City Guards, revealing she possessed the token to deploy them and defense maps that could change the situation in Huayuan City. Han Shuo, blinded by hatred, agreed to cooperate. He initially stated he only wanted the newly discovered black water mine as his price.
However, after agreeing to the deal, Han Shuo confessed to Bai Ji that he would not return to Xuanhu City, as he no longer trusted any woman from Huayuan. He declared that the black water mine was insufficient compensation for Chen Qianqian's betrayal; what he truly desired was "the whole Huayuan City." He then instructed Bai Ji to send a letter back to Xuanhu City.
Chen Qianqian received a confusing letter from Meng Guo, whom she had sent to follow Han Shuo. Meng Guo described a suspicious caravan and mentioned seeing a small, thin, and agile person who reminded him of Su Ziying. Chen Qianqian was frustrated, realizing Meng Guo had failed to provide any useful information about Han Shuo's whereabouts. That night, Huayuan City was sealed off.
Chen Chuchu and Han Shuo, having assassinated the city gate guards and changed into their uniforms, successfully entered the city. The remaining guards were startled to see Chen Chuchu, who was supposed to be confined.
Episode 19 Recap
Chen Chuchu showed Han Shuo a map of the City Owner's Mansion defenses, outlining her plan: she would enter first to make arrangements, and in half an hour, he would bring his forces for a coordinated attack. She confidently stated that she would soon regain control of Huayuan City's City Guards. Han Shuo acknowledged her assistance, feeling empowered by her support. Moments later, Chen Qianqian arrived at Xingzi Mansion.
Chen Chuchu quickly hid Han Shuo before allowing Chen Qianqian to enter. Chen Qianqian immediately recognized one of the men as Han Shuo's guard, realizing he now worked for Chen Chuchu and had previously tried to harm her on Weimeng Mountain. The guard, in turn, declared Chen Qianqian unfit to rule Huayuan City. Chen Qianqian then directly confronted Chen Chuchu, accusing her of murdering Lu Peng.
Chen Chuchu denied it, attempting to shift the blame to Lin Qi and then back to Chen Qianqian herself, but Chen Qianqian remained firm, pointing out that Lu Peng had witnessed Chen Chuchu's argument with their mother, giving her a strong motive. Chen Chuchu then retorted that confining Han Shuo for life was crueler than killing him, dismissing him as a mere plaything for Chen Qianqian, who now had Pei Heng.
She even brought up rumors of constant revelry in Chen Qianqian's Yueli Mansion since Han Shuo's exile. Chen Qianqian, disgusted, declared that Chen Chuchu was the reason their mother had fallen ill. Han Shuo, who had been hiding and listening, concluded that he held no importance to Chen Qianqian. After the heated exchange, Chen Qianqian ordered her own guards to reinforce Chen Chuchu's confinement, ensuring no one could enter or leave Xingzi Mansion.
Following the confrontation, Chen Qianqian found herself in despair. She felt lost without a path home, lamenting the distorted storyline where the male lead was gone, the female lead had turned villainous, and supporting characters were sacrificed. She expressed frustration that despite her efforts to save Huayuan from Xuanhu's conquest, her own story had stalled. Later, outside her mansion, Pei Heng found a despondent Chen Qianqian drinking heavily.
He urged her to stop, suggesting she could pardon Han Shuo and recall him if she truly missed him, rather than punishing herself. Chen Qianqian explained that Han Shuo could never return to Xuanhu or Huayuan, blaming herself for everything and musing that if Lin Qi were still alive, there might have been a chance for her and Han Shuo to be together forever. Pei Heng offered to drink with her.
Drunk, Chen Qianqian mistook Pei Heng for Han Shuo, tearfully apologizing for lying about not loving him and expressing her heartfelt wish to be with him always. Han Shuo, who had secretly followed her and was watching from a distance, overheard her words and silently echoed her wish. Meanwhile, the City Owner, though awake, was still weak.
She expressed concern over Chen Qianqian's continuous visits to the Music and Dance Academy, attributing it to her being "love-stricken," and openly questioned if Chen Chuchu would be a more suitable heir. Despite Sang Qi's attempts to speak neutrally, the City Owner decided to reconsider her decision, stating that Chen Qianqian had shown little concern for the city or its people since Han Shuo's departure. She decided to lift Chen Chuchu's confinement, hoping she had matured.
However, a guard then reported that the city was besieged and the City Owner's Mansion was under attack. The City Owner quickly asked if Chen Qianqian had confiscated Chen Chuchu's flower token while she was in a coma. When Sang Qi confirmed that Chen Qianqian, considering their sisterly bond, had only confined Chen Chuchu and not taken the token, the City Owner became furious and spat blood.
Later, she was relieved to learn that Chen Qianqian was surrounded by Han Shuo's forces at Yueli Mansion, believing she would be safe in his hands. Back in Yueli Mansion, Chen Qianqian woke up from her drunken stupor, startled to find Han Shuo standing before her. She had just finished reading a letter from Meng Guo that vaguely described losing track of Han Shuo, making his sudden appearance even more shocking.
She tried to feign sleep, expressing a desire to sleep until "the end of the play." When she attempted to explain that her past actions were "for his own good," even she admitted it was unbelievable. A guard then loudly reported that Han Shuo had besieged the City Owner's Mansion, leading Chen Qianqian to realize he had taken over the city.
Han Shuo recounted his painful exile, stating he would have forgiven her for any sadness, but all he saw was her acting happy. Chen Qianqian insisted she was truly sad and had been feigning happiness. Han Shuo then presented her with a "gift": ten bottles, one containing a potent poison called "Soul Missing Powder." He forced her to choose one to drink daily, threatening her mother's life if she refused.
Hoping to die and return to her own world, Chen Qianqian chose a bottle, but it turned out to be bitter melon juice. Han Shuo then ordered Bai Ji to confine her to Yueli Mansion. Chen Qianqian lamented that despite her efforts to prevent Xuanhu from conquering Huayuan, the situation had unfolded regardless, leaving her questioning the purpose of her struggles. Amidst the chaos, the city gates were shut, trapping everyone inside.
Su Mu, who had been attempting to leave Huayuan, found himself caught in the lockdown. Upon hearing that Risheng Mansion was surrounded by Xuanhu soldiers, he immediately rushed back to find Chen Yuanyuan. He found her in her ruined home, seemingly preparing a will. He saved her from falling debris, sustaining an injury in the process. Chen Yuanyuan initially pushed him away, reminding him of his earlier confession that he did not love her.
Su Mu, however, declared his changed heart, expressing that his feelings for her were real, especially in such a dire situation, and swore to stay with her until death. Chen Yuanyuan worried about implicating him further but acknowledged that they were now like "a couple on the run." They shared a quiet moment over a preserved drawing bearing the words "To win someone's heart."
Meanwhile, Chen Chuchu, feigning filial concern, reported to her mother, falsely claiming that Han Shuo had viciously attacked Huayuan City after being humiliated by Chen Qianqian. She reassured her mother that she had secured the mansion, earning the City Owner's praise. In the council hall, Zi Zhu, acting under Chen Chuchu's instruction, read a decree stating the City Owner was unwell and had appointed Chen Chuchu to "act in the City Owner's stead."
When an official protested, arguing the Crown Princess should be the one to fill in, Chen Chuchu immediately ordered him to be taken away. She then silenced other dissenting officials and had them removed. Soon after, Pei Heng burst into Chen Chuchu's mansion, urging her to repent. He questioned why Han Shuo had returned and whose guards had truly besieged the City Owner's Mansion, implying her complicity.
Chen Chuchu, unmoved, dismissed his concerns, stating that her desire to obtain what was rightfully hers was merely a "matter of time." She disrespectfully implied that her only reason for acknowledging him was out of respect for his late father. Nearby, one of her aides commented on Han Shuo's apparent unease when seeing Pei Heng, suggesting Han Shuo still harbored feelings for Chen Qianqian, and noting that Pei Heng's actions would only further infuriate him.
Despite warnings from his guard about the futility of his actions, Pei Heng decided to confront Han Shuo at Yueli Mansion to rescue Chen Qianqian. He accused Han Shuo of hurting Chen Qianqian and of being unworthy of her affection, reminding him that they were divorced and he intended to take her away. Han Shuo, enraged, brutally attacked Pei Heng, asserting that Huayuan City's rules of divorce held no sway, and that only Xuanhu City's rules mattered.
He declared Chen Qianqian his wife and that she would "stay with me forever." Pei Heng collapsed, coughing blood. Chen Qianqian rushed out to his side, asking if he was alright. Han Shuo, consumed by jealousy, roughly grabbed Chen Qianqian and carried her back into the room, ignoring her struggles and Pei Heng's pleas. Inside the room, Han Shuo confronted Chen Qianqian, accusing her and Pei Heng of mutual affection.
Chen Qianqian, terrified, pleaded with him to stop, declaring that while she once loved, respected, and cherished him, he was now "unworthy." Han Shuo, defiant, scoffed at her warning that force would not yield agreeable results. As he attempted to force intimacy, Chen Qianqian screamed for help and slapped him. Disturbed by her cries and obvious terror, Han Shuo stopped, calling her a "spoilsport."
He then confirmed that she truly had lost her martial arts skills, realizing she rarely spoke the truth, and began to question his own harsh actions. Still outside in the rain, Pei Heng continued to call Han Shuo a "beast" and begged him to release Chen Qianqian. Han Shuo emerged to tell Pei Heng to give up, warning him against any further attempts to "steal my wife," then ordered his men to escort Pei Heng home.
As he was being led away, Pei Heng vowed he would not give up on Chen Qianqian. Bai Ji tried to prod Han Shuo, commenting on how quickly his anger softened for Chen Qianqian, and offered to "help." Han Shuo angrily dismissed him, then, distrusting Chen Chuchu, ordered Bai Ji to replace all existing guards with their own Xuanhu soldiers, following the city defense map.
Zi Rui, finding Chen Qianqian still distressed, suggested she "give in" to Han Shuo to end the siege, portraying it as a mutually beneficial outcome. He warned that if she continued to resist and infuriate Han Shuo, Chen Chuchu might become the City Owner, leaving them unprotected. Chen Qianqian expressed concern about Han Shuo, calling him an "an-eye-for-an-eye demon."
Zi Rui then confirmed that Chen Chuchu was indeed expected to become City Owner, citing an official decree read in the council hall. Chen Qianqian realized that the plot was "getting back to the plot," indicating a path home for her, but worried about Han Shuo's fate, as the original storyline dictated his death shortly after Chen Chuchu ascended to power. Determined, she resolved not to let Chen Chuchu become City Owner.
Later, Bai Ji brought Chen Qianqian five bottles, telling her Han Shuo found it "funnier" to reduce the number of choices from the previous day's ten. Frustrated, Chen Qianqian called Han Shuo an "obstacle on my way home" and decided to "counter-attack." She dramatically mixed all five bottles (which contained an assortment of mundane liquids like soy sauce, vinegar, and onion juice) and drank the concoction, then began to fake excruciating stomach pain, loudly calling for her sister, Yuanyuan.
Han Shuo, seeing through her ruse, mocked her, stating that he drank the same concoction without issue. He refused her pleas to see Yuanyuan or her mother, correctly deducing her intention to use the pretense to escape. He coldly told her to endure the pain if she didn't want a doctor, then left, instructing her to "stay here" and "don't think about escaping."
Chen Qianqian, still feigning pain, lamented how Han Shuo treated her despite her missing him while he was away. At that moment, Bai Ji announced that a group of musicians had arrived, claiming Chen Qianqian used to invite them "every few days" and missed her. Han Shuo, further angered by this apparent confirmation of her indifference, sarcastically allowed them in to "entertain" her, implying she sought to escape to see them.
Among the musicians was a disguised Pei Heng, who revealed he had come to rescue her. Recognizing the opportunity, Zi Rui quickly and loudly ordered Bai Ji to prepare a ridiculously long list of elaborate dishes for Chen Qianqian, effectively distracting Bai Ji and sending him scurrying off to the kitchens. Chen Qianqian praised Zi Rui's quick thinking and Bai Ji's gullibility.
Zi Rui updated her that the City Owner, Chen Yuanyuan, and Su Mu were under house arrest but were currently safe. Chen Qianqian thanked Pei Heng for his disguise. Pei Heng, in turn, confessed that while he once considered it shameful to please women, he now found it fulfilling to help and bring joy to the woman he loved.
Chen Qianqian, despite the urgency, asked if Han Shuo had troubled him again, then defended Han Shuo, claiming she was to blame for pushing him to this point. Before she could elaborate, a butler interrupted them.
Episode 20 Recap
After successfully escaping Yueli Mansion, Chen Qianqian and Pei Heng found temporary refuge at Butler Lin’s residence. Butler Lin, still grateful to Chen Qianqian for saving Lin Qi's life, housed them. Suddenly, a mysterious brocade box arrived at the mansion. Inside, they found Lin Qi's golden token and a brief handwritten note that read, "This letter represents me. I am doing fine." Butler Lin was overjoyed to learn that his lady was alive. This revelation deeply impacted Chen Qianqian.
She reflected on her decision to drive Han Shuo away, which she had made because she believed she had lost control of the story, fearing Han Shuo would follow the tragic plot she had originally written. However, with her mother's recovery from a stroke, proof that Chen Chuchu was responsible for Lu Peng's death, and now Lin Qi’s survival, Chen Qianqian realized she could indeed alter the characters' destinies. Her prior actions against Han Shuo now seemed unnecessary.
Seeing her lost in thought, Pei Heng asked what was wrong. Chen Qianqian, determined to clarify the misunderstanding, announced her decision to return to Yueli Mansion. Despite Pei Heng's fervent warnings that she was walking into a trap, Chen Qianqian remained resolute. She sought a discreet way to re-enter the mansion from Butler Lin, apologized to Pei Heng, and departed. Meanwhile, at the City Owner's Mansion, Han Shuo demanded the City Owner's Seal.
The City Owner, aware of Han Shuo's affection for Chen Qianqian, refused to yield, subtly reminding him to be wary of Chen Chuchu. Han Shuo, understanding her veiled threat, asserted that as City Owner, the Seal was more important than her life. When Han Shuo threatened to harm her, the City Owner cleverly countered by invoking Chen Qianqian, suggesting that her death would cause Chen Qianqian immense grief and turn her against Han Shuo.
Realizing he was outmaneuvered and could not risk alienating Chen Qianqian, Han Shuo recognized he was compelled not only to spare but also to protect the City Owner. He then instructed his Xuanhu City soldiers to guard the City Owner's bedroom strictly, prohibiting entry or exit. Chen Qianqian, having returned to Yueli Mansion disguised among musicians, was caught off guard by Han Shuo’s unexpected return.
She frantically tried to instruct the musicians to pretend they had forced her to leave, while she had steadfastly refused, professing her loyalty to Han Shuo. But Han Shuo had already seen her in the musician's attire. He confronted her, accusing her of attempting to escape with Pei Heng again, calling it the "same trick." A musician, under duress, confessed that Pei Heng had instructed them. Enraged, Han Shuo ordered Bai Ji to escort the musicians away.
Chen Qianqian tried desperately to explain, but Han Shuo, seething with anger, refused to listen. He accused her of exploiting his unwavering devotion and abandoning their love for political gain. He declared he would no longer show her mercy, threatening to consummate their marriage to ensure she could not escape. Chen Qianqian, in a desperate attempt to prove her sincerity, tore up the divorce letter and lay on the bed, inviting him to proceed.
Han Shuo, however, misinterpreted her actions as a shameless sacrifice to save Pei Heng or her mother. Furious, he denounced her as indecent and declared that if she refused to be his wife, she would become his slave, responsible for all household chores. Soon after, Bai Ji informed Han Shuo that Chen Chuchu had arrived. Han Shuo, seizing the opportunity to provoke Chen Qianqian, ordered her to serve them.
Chen Chuchu, noting that Han Shuo and Chen Qianqian were divorced, suggested sending Chen Qianqian to Risheng Mansion. Han Shuo readily agreed, coldly stating that Chen Qianqian was "just a toy" and her location was irrelevant. He then deliberately acted intimate with Chen Chuchu, asking if she needed further proof of his indifference. When Chen Chuchu pressed him on when he would send Chen Qianqian away, Han Shuo replied that he preferred to keep his "toy" close.
Chen Chuchu then proposed Han Shuo move to Xingzi Mansion for easier discussion of city affairs. Han Shuo countered, accusing her of treating him like a subservient Huayuan man. Chen Chuchu realized Han Shuo's entire performance was an act to upset Chen Qianqian, and, angered, she departed. Chen Qianqian, heartbroken, reflected on how much more pain Han Shuo must have felt when she presented him with the divorce letter.
Zi Rui then informed Chen Qianqian that Han Shuo required her help changing clothes. She reluctantly complied. Han Shuo, feigning nonchalance, then demanded tea. Chen Qianqian brought him a cup, which he dramatically declared too hot. He threatened her, reminding her of his power over Huayuan City, her mother's confinement, and the "little white bottles" of poison, stating her life was entirely in his hands and she would not leave Yueli Mansion.
As a final torment, he ordered her to iron his clothes, warning her of sleepless nights if any wrinkles remained. Chen Qianqian, weary, complained about men imposing housework, and inadvertently burned her hand while ironing. Meanwhile, Chen Chuchu confronted Han Shuo about placing his own guards around her mother’s room, fearing he was growing soft towards Chen Qianqian. Han Shuo maintained it was a precaution against her potential betrayal, implying Chen Qianqian was not a sufficient hostage for her.
Chen Chuchu pressed him about the abdication decree, lamenting that while documents could be forged, the City Owner Seal could not, and without it, she could not truly rule. She then chillingly revealed her plan: to coerce the City Owner into handing over the Seal by progressively cutting off Chen Qianqian's fingers and sending them to her.
She challenged Han Shuo to see if he could bear it, and reminded him of their alliance and his claim to the black water mine. Han Shuo reassured her he would help her obtain the Seal, but Chen Chuchu cautioned him against breaking their agreement, warning that she also commanded the City Guards. Pei Heng, having learned of Chen Qianqian's burned hand from his servant, rushed to Yueli Mansion despite being told nothing could be done.
He confronted Han Shuo, accusing him of mistreating Chen Qianqian, who had never truly been cherished. Han Shuo scoffed at the idea that mere housework constituted torture and feigned ignorance of Chen Qianqian's injury. Pei Heng reiterated that Chen Qianqian had burned her hand and declared his intention to take her away. Han Shuo, mocking Pei Heng's lack of military power, asserted that Pei Heng could not even protect himself, let alone Chen Qianqian.
Han Shuo rushed into Chen Qianqian's room. From under the covers, she tearfully accused him of being a "beast" for trying to force intimacy while she was injured. Han Shuo was more preoccupied with why she hadn't told him about her injury, and why Pei Heng had known first. Chen Qianqian retorted that he didn't care about her anyway, and she hadn't told Pei Heng.
Han Shuo's anger softened as he noted she had applied medicine and asked if it hurt. Chen Qianqian, wanting him to stay, begged him not to leave her alone. He initially offered to send Zi Rui but ultimately stayed, taking the entire bed for himself and leaving Chen Qianqian to sleep on the hard floor. She complained about the discomfort, to which Han Shuo jokingly replied that "hard is good for the waist."
Later that night, Han Shuo gazed at the moon, remembering their first night together. He quietly apologized for the pain he had caused her, wishing her earlier rejection of him had only been an act. The next morning, it seemed they had reconciled. Han Shuo spoke of taking Chen Qianqian back to Xuanhu City as his wife once the City Owner signed the abdication decree.
However, Chen Qianqian refused to abandon her mother and Huayuan City, reminding him of its ancestral significance and her mother's devotion. She challenged his intentions regarding Chen Chuchu, who had "saved" him. Han Shuo dismissed Chen Chuchu's motives as self-serving, stating everyone would be his prisoner once her mother abdicated. He then accused Chen Qianqian of betraying him and having an unchanging, manipulative nature.
Chen Qianqian retorted by reciting his character biography, accusing him of being a petty, ruthless man, and demanding he direct his anger at her, not her elderly, sick mother. Han Shuo, in a fit of jealousy, asked her a "fatal question": if he and her mother fell into the water simultaneously, who would she save first? Chen Qianqian sarcastically questioned why a grown man couldn't swim and accused him of being jealous of her mother.
Han Shuo then threatened to end her mother's life if Chen Qianqian disobeyed him. Declaring her intention to go to the City Owner's Mansion, Chen Qianqian stormed out. Han Shuo immediately ordered Zi Rui to confine her to the room. Zi Rui and Bai Ji then engaged in a comical argument about their masters' quarrel, with Zi Rui lamenting Chen Qianqian's potential loss of inheritance and Bai Ji defending Han Shuo.
Determined to save Chen Qianqian, Pei Heng resolved to seize the flower token and rally the City Guards. He had already learned that Chen Chuchu, despite controlling the City Guards, showed no intention of rescuing the City Owner, and that discontent was brewing within the army against her rule.
He reconnected with an old wet nurse, a former confidante of his mother, the late Minister of Defense, who confirmed Chen Chuchu's true nature and acknowledged that Pei Heng's mother would never have supported Chen Chuchu's betrayal of the City Owner. The wet nurse agreed to assist Pei Heng in snatching the flower token while Chen Chuchu was inspecting it.
Soon after, Chen Chuchu and Han Shuo were discussing the impending abdication decree when a guard reported that a thief had been caught trying to steal the flower token. Han Shuo departed, leaving Chen Chuchu to deal with the "family matter." Pei Heng, having successfully obtained the flower token with the wet nurse’s help, arrived at the City Guards' camp.
Displaying the token, he commanded the City Guards to switch their allegiance to Chen Qianqian, rescue the City Owner, and confront Han Shuo in battle. The guards initially mocked him, refusing to take orders from a man in Huayuan City. Pei Heng asserted his authority, reminding them that the position of Minister of Defense had historically belonged to the Pei family and that he possessed the courage of the City Guards. He then executed the defiant commanding officer.
Faced with a leaderless situation and Pei Heng, a legitimate Pei, holding the revered flower token, the remaining generals rallied behind him, pledging to rescue the City Owner and Chen Qianqian. Meanwhile, Chen Qianqian, still confined, grew increasingly anxious, fearing she would be trapped until the story's end. The thought of her unyielding mother clashing with Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu terrified her. Realizing a violent confrontation was imminent, she resolved that she had to intervene and prevent it.
Just as her resolve solidified, Pei Heng, leading the City Guards, stormed into Yueli Mansion. He found Chen Qianqian, declaring he had come to rescue her. He reminded her of her past words, that he would become the first male Minister of Defense, a feat he had now accomplished. He apologized to her, explaining that while it wasn't her fault, he had to acquire power to truly protect her.
Episode 21 Recap
Chen Chuchu presented a drafted abdication decree to the City Owner, demanding the official City Owner Seal be stamped on it to legitimize her claim to the throne. The City Owner, however, mocked her for her attempt to forge the decree and suggested she should have just forged the seal as well.
Chen Chuchu argued that the decree needed the genuine seal to be convincing and brazenly asked her mother to publicly declare her as the successor in the meeting hall and demote Chen Qianqian, reminding the City Owner that she had always been groomed for this role. The City Owner read a passage from the decree that praised Chen Chuchu as large-hearted and caring while denouncing Chen Qianqian as ill-behaved and immoral.
She then reminisced about the late Minister Pei, who sacrificed her life for Huayuan City, and how she had intended to raise Chen Chuchu to be righteous like her. She acknowledged that Chen Chuchu's ambition now seemed to fulfill that aspiration. Chen Chuchu inquired why her mother suddenly brought up Minister Pei. The City Owner expressed her deep disappointment, feeling that years of her efforts had been wasted.
When Chen Chuchu pressed her for time, the City Owner recounted how the City Owner Seal got chipped when Chen Chuchu, as a child, played with it like a toy. She lamented that Chen Chuchu was now using the same seal for such disloyal and unfilial acts, regretting not punishing her more severely back then. Chen Chuchu remained unyielding, declaring it was too late to turn back, and threatened Sang Qi, enraging the City Owner.
At that moment, Su Ziying reported that Han Shuo had betrayed them, confirming that Han Shuo had never intended to truly cooperate. He informed Chen Chuchu that their forces were now surrounded by Xuanhu City Guards. Furious, Chen Chuchu confronted Han Shuo, accusing him of betraying her while she was busy with her mother. Han Shuo retorted that she was too credulous, just as he once was.
Chen Chuchu blamed Chen Qianqian for Han Shuo's actions, to which Han Shuo dismissively commented that all Huayuan women were the same. Chen Chuchu then questioned if Chen Qianqian was the only one in his heart, and they began to fight. Chen Chuchu was outmatched, and Han Shuo's sword was about to strike her when Su Ziying bravely stepped in to block the blow. Suddenly, Chen Qianqian and Pei Heng arrived, leading the Huayuan City Guards.
Han Shuo was visibly disappointed, believing Chen Qianqian had abandoned him. Chen Qianqian explained that her affection for Han Shuo did not conflict with her duty to protect the citizens of Huayuan. Meanwhile, Meng Guo and his bandits helped the City Guards secure the city gate. Chen Chuchu, in a fit of rage, lunged at Chen Qianqian with her sword, but Han Shuo swiftly intercepted the attack, saving Chen Qianqian.
Just as Han Shuo attempted to take Chen Qianqian with him, the City Owner appeared and ordered the arrest of both Han Shuo and Chen Chuchu. She sternly declared to Chen Chuchu that their mother-daughter relationship was severed, stating that while she might have owed Chen Chuchu in the past, they were now even. Bai Ji urged Han Shuo to retreat, but Han Shuo remained fixated on Chen Qianqian.
Later, Pei Heng secretly met with the City Owner, pleading for Chen Chuchu's life. He argued that Han Shuo was the primary instigator and that Chen Chuchu had been coerced. He even claimed that Chen Chuchu's final strike at Chen Qianqian was an attempt to prevent Han Shuo's escape.
Pei Heng further asserted that the City Owner would forgive Chen Chuchu regardless, reminding her that Chen Chuchu was the only daughter of the late Minister Pei and recalling the promise the City Owner had made to his own mother to care for Chen Chuchu. Pei Heng, who had been old enough to remember these events, then proposed that Han Shuo be executed to silence any dissent, and all blame be shifted to him.
This would allow Chen Chuchu to be portrayed as an unwilling accomplice, a hostage, or even a cunning spy who ultimately served Huayuan City. The City Owner accepted Pei Heng's counsel, commending him for living up to his mother's esteemed reputation. Despite having calculated many things, Han Shuo realized he had overlooked Meng Guo’s forces. He lamented not listening to Bai Ji’s advice to enlist Meng Guo earlier. Chen Qianqian visited Han Shuo in prison, determined to save him.
At the execution ground the next day, Chen Qianqian desperately begged her mother to spare Han Shuo's life. She revealed that she and Han Shuo were truly married, showcasing the absence of the cinnabar mark on her arm. She declared her sincere love for him and offered to relinquish her position as Crown Princess to Chen Chuchu, assuring her mother that Chen Chuchu, under her guidance, would become a wise City Owner, bringing peace to the City Owner's later years.
Chen Qianqian pleaded for her mother to consider her dead from the day she married Han Shuo, and to free him, offering to give up everything for him. The City Owner was deeply pained, questioning if Chen Qianqian would abandon her mother for a man. When Chen Qianqian replied that she never truly desired the Crown Princess title, only Han Shuo, the City Owner, heartbroken and enraged, ordered Han Shuo's immediate execution.
Chen Qianqian rushed to the execution block, pushing the executioner aside. She pulled out a retractable dagger and plunged it into her chest, hoping her death would bring an end to the conflict and save Han Shuo. The crowd was stunned. Pei Heng, distraught, rushed to embrace Chen Qianqian, unable to accept her death. The Yueli Mansion was draped in white mourning banners, and the City Owner, overwhelmed with grief, agreed to release Han Shuo.
Pei Heng, remorseful, arrived to offer his condolences, regretting his suggestion to blame Han Shuo. He was surprised by Han Shuo’s seemingly emotionless demeanor and accused him of merely deceiving and manipulating Chen Qianqian. In despair, Pei Heng nearly attempted to join Chen Qianqian in the coffin, but Han Shuo intervened. At that moment, Chen Qianqian's voice emanated from the coffin, revealing her elaborate ruse of faking her death.
She explained it was a "prop" to deceive everyone, save Han Shuo, and finally disarm Chen Chuchu's suspicions. Han Shuo, relieved but annoyed, chided her for almost causing Pei Heng's death. Chen Qianqian apologized to Pei Heng, admitting her desperate measures. She asked Han Shuo to leave so she could speak with Pei Heng alone.
Chen Qianqian acknowledged that she had overheard Pei Heng’s heartfelt words and regretted that things might have been different if she had shown courage earlier, but concluded that perhaps they were never meant to be. She asked him to imagine she had been poisoned on her wedding night, at a time when he still disliked her, suggesting it might make his pain more bearable.
Pei Heng confessed that falling in love with her after her marriage gave his life meaning, making her his greatest aspiration. However, Chen Qianqian gently told him that she only understood true love after meeting Han Shuo, and encouraged him to move on, assuring him he would find a wonderful person in the future and that she would be fine. They made a solemn pact that Pei Heng would stop loving her starting the next day.
As Pei Heng, still heartbroken, left Yueli Mansion, he encountered Chen Chuchu, who had come to pay her respects. Noticing Pei Heng’s lack of tears, Chen Chuchu grew suspicious of Chen Qianqian’s death and instructed her attendant, Zi Zhu, to prepare some items. Back inside, Han Shuo, teasingly calling himself the "Xuanhu King of Jealousy," demanded Chen Qianqian explain all her secrets, including her martial arts, once they returned to Xuanhu City.
She agreed, and he playfully threatened to "reassert his husband's authority" if she lied again. The City Owner, Chen Yuanyuan, and Chen Chuchu then arrived at the mourning hall. Chen Chuchu insisted on seeing Chen Qianqian one last time, but the City Owner gently refused, saying it would only bring more sorrow.
Chen Chuchu then proposed a method to preserve the body: refining mercury from cinnabar and injecting it into the blood vessels to prevent decay, a clear attempt to poison Chen Qianqian. Han Shuo vehemently objected, accusing Chen Chuchu of disrespecting the deceased and attempting to poison her. Chen Chuchu retorted that Chen Qianqian was a sinner who disobeyed the City Owner and did not deserve an elaborate coffin or burial in the ancestral tomb.
She then suggested cremation, turning Chen Qianqian's remains into a sarira to be enshrined in the ancestral temple, an act that Han Shuo recognized as an attempt to completely destroy her. He loudly questioned Chen Chuchu's deep-seated hatred for Chen Qianqian, provoking Chen Chuchu to call him heartless. The City Owner, observing Han Shuo’s unusually strong reaction, realized Chen Qianqian's fake death plan. Feigning sorrow, she pounded on the coffin, discreetly creating a small gap for Chen Qianqian to breathe.
She then dismissed everyone, and privately urged Han Shuo to treat Chen Qianqian well. The City Owner understood that Chen Qianqian’s feigned death was not just for Han Shuo, but also for Huayuan City, to prevent further conflict with Chen Chuchu and ensure a smoother succession. By accepting her death, she was severing their mother-daughter bond, hoping Chen Qianqian would understand her difficult choice.
She ordered Chen Qianqian's coffin to be escorted to the cemetery that night, giving her a chance to escape. However, Chen Chuchu had already anticipated this and secretly dispatched Su Ziying to assassinate Chen Qianqian at the cemetery, intending to turn the fake death into a real one. As the coffin was being transported, Chen Qianqian, still inside, complained about the dark and confined space, and the lack of oxygen.
Han Shuo jokingly offered to join her, and when she mentioned the oxygen issue, he declared she was his oxygen. Suddenly, Su Ziying launched an ambush, attacking the coffin and demanding Chen Qianqian’s death. Fortunately, Lin Qi arrived with her people and captured Su Ziying on the spot. Lin Qi, who had survived thanks to Chen Qianqian's previous intervention, declared she couldn't die before avenging her past grievances.
When asked how to deal with Su Ziying, Meng Guo suggested capturing and releasing him repeatedly to earn his loyalty. Chen Qianqian, knowing Su Ziying's cunning nature, disagreed, insisting that releasing him would be a mistake. Han Shuo argued for harsher punishment, even death, given Su Ziying's repeated attempts on Chen Qianqian's life. Chen Qianqian, however, chose mercy, ordering them to simply tie him up to prevent further trouble, and Meng Guo led Su Ziying away.
Lin Qi then explained that she had come to pay her respects, surprised to find Chen Qianqian alive. Han Shuo urged Chen Qianqian to return to Xuanhu City with him, and Chen Qianqian, delighted to see Lin Qi, suggested she join them. Lin Qi revealed that she had gotten married to a traveling merchant from Xuanhu City who saved her life when she was severely injured. Chen Qianqian enthusiastically suggested that Lin Qi and her husband accompany them, but Lin Qi, though happy for Chen Qianqian, still expressed hesitation, reiterating that she now had a husband.
Episode 22 Recap
Lin Qi's unexpected survival and Su Ziying's failed assassination attempt enraged Chen Chuchu, who had her subordinate report the events. Chen Chuchu, furious that Chen Qianqian had escaped with Lin Qi's help and that Su Ziying was captured, immediately dispatched more assassins with orders to kill Chen Qianqian before she could reach Xuanhu City. Meanwhile, Pei Heng confronted Chen Chuchu, expressing his profound disappointment.
He reminded her that with the City Owner's public declaration of Chen Qianqian's death and her older sister still recovering, Chen Chuchu was the sole rightful candidate for the position of City Owner, yet she remained obsessed with harming Chen Qianqian. Chen Chuchu dismissed his concerns, believing that once her mother forgave her, she would still become Minister of Defense. Pei Heng countered that the City Guards were historically linked to his family, making the position rightfully his.
Disillusioned, he left Chen Chuchu, determined to assume his inherited role as Minister of Defense. The City Owner, having withdrawn into seclusion and fortified her mansion, left the city's affairs to her generals. Chen Chuchu, no longer holding any military rank, boldly went to the army camp, ordering the execution of the Xuanhu City prisoners of war. However, Pei Heng, now formally the Minister of Defense, firmly rejected her demand.
He argued that these soldiers were merely following orders and did not deserve death; instead, he decreed they should be sent to labor in the mines. Pei Heng invoked the wisdom of his late mother, the former Minister Pei, stating that true courage lies not in prolonging conflict but in finding a rational way to end it.
The assembled generals, deeply impressed by Pei Heng's compassionate and decisive leadership, openly pledged their loyalty to him, implicitly shaming Chen Chuchu's ruthless proposal. Enraged by their defiance, Chen Chuchu stormed out. On their journey to Xuanhu City, Han Shuo, anticipating Chen Qianqian's boredom, arranged for three storytellers to accompany them. As the storytellers recounted tales, they revealed their understanding of Chen Qianqian's "Apple, Orange, Banana" analogy, correctly identifying them as Chen Chuchu, Chen Qianqian, and Han Shuo respectively.
They marvelled at her apparent foresight, suggesting she was like an immortal, possessing knowledge of secrets like the Dragon Bone's whereabouts and Han Shuo's heart condition. Chen Qianqian, with a modest air, admitted she was indeed the creator of their entire world. Han Shuo, overhearing her confession, was furious about her secrecy. He confronted her, demanding an explanation for framing him for Su Mu's troubles and his subsequent exile.
Chen Qianqian tearfully explained that in her original script, characters like her mother, Lin Qi, and Lu Peng had died or suffered terrible fates. Fearing a similar end for Han Shuo, she deliberately altered events to save him. She confessed that she had stopped trying to push him towards Chen Chuchu once she realized her true feelings for him. She also revealed that his heart condition was a plot device she created, which she then cured with the Dragon Bone.
Han Shuo was initially incredulous but also captivated by this extraordinary revelation. He asked about the story's ultimate ending, and Chen Qianqian shared her belief that she might return to her original world when "the sun and moon are up in the sky at the same time and the gate to Heaven is wide open." Han Shuo, deeply saddened by the prospect of her departure, playfully tried to provoke her by boasting about taking three hundred concubines if she left.
However, Chen Qianqian reassured him, affirming her decision to stay with him, regardless of whether their world was fictional. She emphasized that her love for him was real and she could not easily let go. Hearing this, Han Shuo's resentment dissipated, replaced by relief and joy at finally understanding her true feelings. Upon their arrival in Xuanhu City, a starkly male-dominated society, Han Shuo and Chen Qianqian were met with a mix of curiosity and disapproval.
Locals openly gossiped, especially at the sight of Han Shuo, a prominent male figure, leading Chen Qianqian's horse, an act viewed as highly unconventional and demeaning for a man. Chen Qianqian's attendant bravely defended her mistress's title as "Third Princess," but Chen Qianqian gently urged him to conform to Xuanhu customs. They encountered a guard who barred the attendant from the back garden, explicitly stating that "irrelevant men" had to be castrated to enter.
Chen Qianqian then attended a banquet hosted by the City Owner's wife, where she tried to present herself as demure and scholarly. However, Lin Qi inadvertently revealed Chen Qianqian's past frequent visits to the Music and Dance Academy, shattering this facade, shocking the City Owner's wife and other aristocratic women and creating a poor first impression.
Meanwhile, Han Shuo met with his father, the City Owner, who sternly reprimanded him for failing all his missions in Huayuan City, particularly for not securing the valuable black stone mine. Back in her quarters, Chen Qianqian, feeling stifled by Xuanhu's rigid environment, voiced her desire to leave, even contemplating returning to Huayuan City despite Chen Chuchu's threats, prioritizing her own happiness.
As punishment for her perceived improper conduct and as a prerequisite to leaving, she was ordered to copy "Female Virtues" a hundred times. When Han Shuo learned of her predicament, he was deeply moved. In a powerful defiance of Xuanhu City's patriarchal norms, he immediately offered to help her copy the text and, in front of the servants, personally washed her feet.
This act of blatant submission to his wife enraged the City Owner, who saw it as a profound humiliation for his son. However, the City Owner's wife, a woman of quiet strength who generally deferred to her husband in public, subtly revealed his diminished authority at home, as he was later seen meekly washing her feet. News of Young Master Han washing his wife's feet spread like wildfire across Xuanhu City.
The local aristocratic wives, who had initially looked down on Chen Qianqian, were now a mixture of astonished and envious. They flocked to her residence the following morning, eager for her "husband-taming" advice. Chen Qianqian, embracing her new role as a relationship expert, explained that true "husband-taming" was actually about "self-mastery." She taught them that women should cultivate their own inherent value and their value to their partners.
She emphasized that love thrives on mutual respect and a man's recognition of his wife's irreplaceable presence, advocating for equality rather than a mere reversal of power dynamics. At a subsequent banquet, the male officials openly complained about their wives' recent, unusual behaviors, noting their wives were now demanding jobs or threatening to return to their parental homes if their feet weren't washed, clearly influenced by Chen Qianqian's teachings and Han Shuo's example.
Han Shuo, further challenging social norms, openly served Chen Qianqian at the table, much to the City Owner's visible displeasure. When the City Owner expressed concern about the city's declining birth rate due to marriage issues, Chen Qianqian seized the opportunity. She sharply critiqued Xuanhu City's deep-seated male chauvinism, where men's self-righteousness led them to make decisions without consulting their partners.
She dismissed suggestions of "bachelor taxes" or forced marriages as ineffective, asserting that the problem lay with the men, not the women. Chen Qianqian then boldly proposed opening intermarriage between Xuanhu City and Huayuan City. She argued that despite their differing social structures, allowing individuals to freely choose partners from either city would solve Xuanhu's population decline, resolve cultural misunderstandings, and foster peace and prosperity between the two realms.
The City Owner, however, vehemently rejected her proposal, and Han Shuo's agreement only earned him a stern rebuke from his father. Meanwhile, Chen Chuchu attempted to visit the City Owner but was barred by newly appointed, loyal guards, underscoring her increasing isolation. The City Owner finally summoned Chen Chuchu, who feigned ignorance about the assassination attempt on Chen Qianqian.
The City Owner, revealing that Su Ziying had already confessed, chastised Chen Chuchu for her ruthless actions, especially after Chen Qianqian had willingly faked her own death to clear the path for Chen Chuchu's ascension. The City Owner then revealed Chen Chuchu's true parentage: she was the biological daughter of the late Minister Pei, whom the City Owner had adopted and raised as her own after Minister Pei's death, keeping her identity a strict secret.
The City Owner accused Chen Chuchu of having developed a "wolf's ambition," driven by fear that Chen Qianqian might eventually return to reclaim the throne. She somberly told Chen Chuchu that despite her willingness to transfer power, Chen Chuchu lacked the moral character and popular support, even from the City Guards who had served her for years, to rule effectively, thus bringing shame upon the memory of her true mother, Minister Pei.
Episode 23 Recap
In the ancestral hall of the Pei family, Chen Chuchu knelt before the memorial tablet of her birth mother, the late Minister Pei Wujiang. She recalled her mother's dying wish, entrusted to the City Owner: that Chuchu would grow up to be useful, succeed her as Minister, and serve Huayuan City. Now knowing her true lineage, Chen Chuchu lamented that she was never destined to be City Owner, yet was given false hope.
When Pei Heng arrived to comfort her, Chen Chuchu, believing he, Chen Qianqian, and others had kept the truth from her, angrily accused them of letting her live a grand illusion. Her resentment towards Chen Qianqian intensified. Meanwhile, Chen Qianqian spoke with Han Shuo's mother, the Xuanhu City Owner's wife, Minister Hua. Minister Hua shared her past: her father was Xuanhu's Minister of Defense.
When he fell ill and war was imminent, she, then young, disguised herself as a man to fight in his place. During that campaign, she met Han Shuo’s father, who was then an Army Supervisor, and proudly recounted how she defeated him in a duel. After their marriage, however, she acknowledged that she had lived a domestic life, abandoning her love for the art of war and leading armies.
Chen Qianqian resonated with her, understanding her desire to return to the battlefield. Chen Qianqian argued that a family should be a partnership, where both husband and wife are equal and free to pursue their ambitions, challenging the notion that women must sacrifice their careers for family. She also reflected that her own female-superior system in Huayuan City was equally unfair to men.
Minister Hua was deeply moved by Chen Qianqian’s words, realizing that her longing to return to her true self was valid. Empowered by her hidden history and newfound determination, Chen Chuchu publicly revealed her identity as the daughter of the late Minister Pei Wujiang, presenting a jade pendant and a handwritten letter as proof.
She then forcefully seized the flower token, the symbol of command, from Pei Heng and crushed it, declaring that from now on, Huayuan City’s City Guards would only recognize the person, not the token. Proclaiming herself the rightful Minister Pei, she immediately tore up the existing trade agreement with Xuanhu City and withheld the black stone mine.
She sent a message to Xuanhu, demanding Chen Qianqian's return, threatening to never sell black stone minerals to the Han family again if they refused. She further consolidated her power by replacing the City Owner's Mansion guards with her own loyalists and effectively placed the Huayuan City Owner under house arrest. When her adoptive mother confronted her, Chen Chuchu unapologetically stated that with power in her hands, the title of City Owner was irrelevant.
She vowed to prove herself superior to Chen Qianqian and ensure she wouldn't enjoy a peaceful life with Han Shuo. News of Chen Chuchu's actions reached Xuanhu City. Chen Qianqian, suspecting it was a trap, decided to return to Huayuan to investigate. Han Shuo, fearing for her safety, insisted on accompanying her. However, his father, the Xuanhu City Owner, refused to permit it, intending to send Chen Qianqian back alone to resolve the crisis.
Han Shuo's mother, Minister Hua, was enraged by her husband's condescending attitude toward women and his willingness to sacrifice Chen Qianqian. She declared her intention to personally lead troops to assist Chen Qianqian. When her husband threatened to divorce her if she dared to take up arms, Minister Hua promptly threw a divorce letter back at him, stating she had endured his misogyny long enough and was divorcing him first.
She then summoned Minister Li, who had guarded her father's Xuan Token, and dramatically reclaimed her ancestral authority, reassuming her role as Minister Hua, commander of Xuanhu's City Guards. The Xuanhu City Owner was devastated, lamenting his "ruined family" and bitterly blaming Chen Qianqian for causing his wife to leave. In a fit of anger, he swiftly enacted a series of stringent new laws restricting women's attire, education, and involvement in politics or business, even prohibiting them from initiating divorce.
These oppressive decrees caused widespread discontent among Xuanhu women, who, inspired by Minister Hua, began to demand more autonomy. Simultaneously, in Huayuan City, Chen Chuchu's rule was equally tyrannical. She openly interfered with state affairs, issuing harsh decrees targeting men, ordering the arrest and punishment of any man found improperly dressed, learning to read, or engaging in business. The men of Huayuan suffered greatly under her oppressive policies.
Pei Heng, deeply troubled by his adoptive sister's actions, confronted her, but Chen Chuchu defiantly declared that her will was the people's will, dismissing his concerns. Before the Xuanhu army's departure, Han Shuo sought out his father for a private conversation. The Xuanhu City Owner reminisced about his youthful romance with Minister Hua, recalling her as a fearless and captivating warrior. He lamented that after their marriage, she had lost her vibrant spirit.
Han Shuo subtly rebuked his father, likening his mother to a magnolia—a flower of unique elegance meant for the open wilderness, whose charm would be suppressed if confined indoors. He questioned why his father, who fell in love with a proud warrior, had forced her into a stereotypical domestic role and wondered if he truly understood her desires.
On the day of departure, Chen Qianqian formally introduced Su Ziying to Minister Hua, recommending him as her lieutenant, though with a cautious warning. Meanwhile, the Xuanhu City Owner, perhaps influenced by Han Shuo's words, secretly packed his belongings and followed his wife’s army. Chen Yuanyuan, accompanied by Su Mu, managed to escape the City Owner's Mansion through a secret passage and met up with Chen Qianqian.
Upon learning that the Huayuan City Owner and Pei Heng were imprisoned, and deeply disillusioned by Chen Chuchu's cruel and tyrannical actions, Su Ziying proposed a daring 'bitter flesh' strategy. Chen Qianqian initially wanted to avoid collateral damage to Huayuan citizens from a direct assault. Su Ziying suggested she feign capture by him, allowing them to infiltrate the city and seize Chen Chuchu without bloodshed.
Although Han Shuo offered to join, Chen Qianqian decided to go alone with Su Ziying to make the deception more convincing. Su Ziying, with the cooperation of Han Shuo and his subordinate Bai Ji, successfully enacted the plan. He dramatically presented a supposedly captured Chen Qianqian at the city gates, gaining entry into Huayuan City.
However, the Xuanhu City Owner, who had secretly followed his wife, was discovered while trying to speak with her and was promptly apprehended by the City Guards. The Xuanhu City Owner and Minister Hua, now captured, found themselves imprisoned alongside the Huayuan City Owner.
This unexpected meeting of the two City Owners led to an amusing debate about their children's marriage, arguing fiercely over whether Han Shuo should reside in Huayuan or Xuanhu, and whose surname their future children would bear. Eventually, Minister Hua and Sang Qi mediated, leading to a compromise: any sons would take the Han surname, while daughters would be surnamed Chen. Simultaneously, Chen Chuchu, having been informed of Chen Qianqian's presence, ordered the City Guards to seize her.
However, the City Guard commanders, tired of Chen Chuchu's misrule, her disregard for the citizens' welfare, and her betrayal of the late Minister Pei Wujiang's legacy, refused to obey. They openly sided with Chen Qianqian, turning their weapons against Chen Chuchu, who stood alone and betrayed.
Episode 24 (Ending) Recap
As Chen Chuchu and her forces stood at a tense standoff with Chen Qianqian's allies, Pei Heng arrived with the City Guards. Seeing the tide turn against her, Chen Chuchu attempted to stab Chen Qianqian, but Han Shuo suddenly shielded Chen Qianqian, collapsing unconscious shortly after. Chen Yuanyuan quickly examined Han Shuo. Although the sword narrowly missed his heart, his lungs were severely damaged, leaving him with little time left.
Chen Qianqian was heartbroken, regretting that she had written Han Shuo's death into the script. Han Shuo, however, comforted her, stating that he had no regrets meeting her and that his sacrifice for her, Huayuan City, and Xuanhu City was worthwhile. He explained that this was not the ending Chen Qianqian wrote, but his own decision as Han Shuo.
He believed he now understood why the male lead would love the female lead: because she was kind, optimistic, and strong, never backing down from setbacks. He hoped he was her "good match" and that she would never regret their meeting. Han Shuo urged her to bravely finish the story and return to her own world, expressing his desire to see her ascend to the City Owner's throne with his own eyes.
Listening from the doorway, the City Lord and his wife were moved to tears. Despite their grief, they did not blame Chen Qianqian, respecting their son's choice and sense of responsibility. In the aftermath, Huayuan City transformed. Pei Heng was reinstated as Minister of Education and opened a school, ensuring that all citizens, male and female, could receive an education, promoting equality.
Reflecting on the saying, "Nothing lasts forever; seize the day," and unwilling for hatred to linger, Chen Qianqian visited Chen Chuchu in prison. Chen Chuchu, stripped of her former prestige, was filled with bitterness.
Chen Qianqian acknowledged her own part in Chen Chuchu's downfall, admitting that if she had died early on as intended, Han Shuo would have allied with Chen Chuchu, Su Ziying and Meng Guo would have sided with her, and she would have earned the love of the people. However, Chen Qianqian explained that her survival wasn't her fault, and Chen Chuchu's failure stemmed from her inability to adapt when faced with an unexpected "stumbling block."
Chen Qianqian emphasized that Chen Chuchu, despite being the original protagonist with "golden fingers" in the story, ultimately lacked the virtue and talent to become a true City Owner. A few days later, the City Owner succession ceremony was to take place. An old legend held that the first City Owner of Huayuan City encountered a miraculous vision of the sun and moon shining together and the heavens opening during her succession ceremony, signifying a wise ruler.
Chen Qianqian proposed that all three sisters—herself, Chen Chuchu, and Chen Yuanyuan—walk the succession path to see who could summon this auspicious phenomenon. The City Lord agreed, stating that whoever triggered the sign would inherit the throne. On the day of the ceremony, with officials and City Lords from both cities present, Chen Chuchu went first, full of confidence. However, as she offered incense, dark clouds gathered and strong winds erupted, an ominous sign.
Shocked, Chen Chuchu dismissed it as coincidence. Next, Chen Yuanyuan, supported by Su Mu, walked the path; the sky turned clear, but with no special omens. When it was Chen Qianqian's turn, she refused to walk the path, wanting to remain in this world with the man she loved. However, Han Shuo, defying Bai Ji's pleas and struggling with his deteriorating condition, appeared. He stumbled and coughed up blood before collapsing down the steps. Chen Qianqian rushed to him, distraught.
Han Shuo insisted on appearing because he did not want her to be left alone in this world after he was gone. He wanted her to return to her own reality, saying, "You have your own world. I don't have much time left to be with you." At that moment, the sky suddenly glowed with brilliant light, and auspicious clouds descended, astonishing the officials, who knelt in reverence. Han Shuo smiled, looking at the auspicious clouds.
Chen Qianqian's vision blurred, and as she reached out to touch him, everything dissolved into a strong white light. When Chen Qianqian, now Chen Xiaoqian, opened her eyes, she found herself back in her familiar modern apartment. The wall clock showed only a few hours had passed, and her laptop screen still displayed the revised ending of her script, where Chen Chuchu became the City Owner amidst auspicious signs.
Chen Xiaoqian was stunned, struggling to believe that her experiences in Huayuan City were merely a dream. Filled with an emptiness, Chen Xiaoqian received a call from her producer, who informed her that the lead actor, Mr. Han, had been in a car accident, injuring his lungs, and would need three months to recover. Remembering Han Shuo's similar injury and Mr. Han's striking resemblance to him, Chen Xiaoqian rushed to the hospital.
There, she spoke to Mr. Han about the joys and sorrows of Chen Qianqian and Han Shuo. Initially, Mr. Han seemed annoyed, telling her she was "too immersed in the story." He claimed his head was filled with memories of "apple, banana, orange" that were not his own and that he was struggling to differentiate between dream and reality.
However, when he called her "Orange," a nickname only Han Shuo used, Chen Xiaoqian knew with certainty that he was Han Shuo. She instantly hugged him, while Mr. Han's agent, filming the scene, lauded his actor's professionalism.
Mr. Han confirmed he had experienced many strange things after the accident, including memories of Chen Qianqian snatching him from the street, his heart disease being cured by the Dragon Bone, the aphrodisiac incense on Weimeng Mountain, their confession in Yueli Mansion, and the fact that while Chen Qianqian loved Han Shuo, he loved Chen Xiaoqian. Life is full of unexpected encounters, and sometimes, a single moment of perseverance is all it takes for two people to find their destined union.
