Bai Shu arrived to meet Jiang Xian Yun, who asked Jiang Shan to leave so they could speak privately. Lu Ping'an, noticing Jiang Shan’s distress, offered comfort and urged her to eat. Jiang Shan expressed her deep worry, as Jiang Xian Yun was refusing to speak with her and keeping all his feelings to himself. Jiang Xian Yun opened the conversation by demanding one million yuan in compensation.

He threatened to accuse Bai Shu and Tongshan Hospital of violating his personal wishes by saving him, which has left him in endless suffering, a state worse than death. He specifically mentioned "Old Pan" had told Bai Shu not to save him.

Bai Shu refused, explaining that as a doctor, he could not make such a decision on behalf of the hospital, and even if he could, he would not agree, as neither he nor the Tongshan Emergency Department made any mistakes during the rescue. He suggested Jiang Xian Yun could apply to the Medical Malpractice Committee if he believed there was an error, assuring his full cooperation with any investigation, while maintaining he had a clear conscience.

Jiang Xian Yun scoffed, asking if Bai Shu still believed saving him was the only option, noting Bai Shu's brief hesitation as proof of his understanding. Bai Shu, still asserting his clear conscience, eventually left. Upon learning of the one-million-yuan demand, Lu Ping'an rushed in to persuade Jiang Xian Yun, who remained unyielding.

Jiang Xian Yun threatened to expose his story on television, claiming Tongshan Hospital was cruel and cold-blooded for prioritizing "recovery rates" and doctors' "obsession with saving lives" over patients' wishes, leading to endless pain. He believed publicizing his plight would garner sympathy and damage the hospital's reputation far more than one million yuan. Lu Ping'an tried to appeal to Jiang Xian Yun's past resilience, but Jiang Xian Yun dismissed it, stating he now only cared about the money.

Despite Jiang Shan's pleas, Jiang Xian Yun silenced her. Lu Ping'an reluctantly agreed to convey the request to the hospital committee but warned it was unlikely to be approved. Jiang Xian Yun retorted that he had plenty of time to wait, hoping the hospital might eventually let him die. Later, Jiang Shan confided in Lu Ping'an, insisting Jiang Xian Yun was not motivated by money but by immense pain.

Lu Ping'an realized that Jiang Xian Yun’s true intention was to leave the money to Jiang Shan. Jiang Shan, in turn, confronted Jiang Xian Yun, confirming his hidden motive to provide for her. She tearfully declared she didn't want the money and only wanted him to live. Jiang Xian Yun replied that he simply wanted to alleviate her suffering one last time. Lu Ping'an reported the situation to Jiang Zhongjing, the dean.

Jiang Zhongjing stated that the hospital could not set a precedent for compensation, as it would deter doctors from making critical life-saving decisions. He affirmed Bai Shu's actions were correct and promised to provide maximum support in terms of medical expenses and Jiang Shan's work, but not compensation. Jiang Zhongjing emphasized the importance of protecting doctors, whom he considered the hospital's foundation.

Lu Ping'an then asked Jiang Zhongjing what he would have done in Bai Shu's situation, and the dean admitted he might have made the same choice, but acknowledged that doctors have different philosophies, and some outcomes might still lead to regret. That afternoon, Lu Ping'an assigned Bai Shu and Xiao Yan to attend a city-wide hospital public image conference to promote the EICU.

Both initially declined, citing patient care, but Lu Ping'an stressed the critical importance of publicizing the EICU, especially as their department's performance was lagging in the annual assessment. He feared the EICU, which was established under a one-year trial, might be shut down. Xu Yiran supported Lu Ping'an, emphasizing their collective responsibility. Xiao Yan agreed, and Bai Shu, after some grumbling, also consented.

On their way to the conference, Xiao Yan on her motorcycle and Bai Shu in his car encountered a massive multi-vehicle collision on the Xifeng Expressway. Without hesitation, they immediately sprang into action, calling the Tongshan Hospital Emergency Department for urgent reinforcement. Lu Ping'an promptly dispatched an ambulance and medical team to the scene. At the accident site, Bai Shu and Xiao Yan split up to tend to the injured.

Xiao Yan assisted a young woman whose father sustained a fractured vertebrae, instructing her, a nursing student, on cervical spine fixation. She also taught CPR to another patient's husband and improvised with a tennis racket to stabilize another patient’s broken leg. Meanwhile, Bai Shu attended to a critically injured patient with cardiac arrest and suspected pneumothorax. With no puncture kit available, he ingeniously used a syringe to drain fluid from the patient's chest, saving their life.

He also instructed the patient's husband on how to perform CPR. Thanks to their timely and innovative interventions, all seriously injured patients survived. Lu Ping'an and his team soon arrived, and the injured were transported to the hospital. Lu Ping'an informed Bai Shu and Xiao Yan that they were excused from the conference and their expertise was needed for the patients' follow-up care.

Exhausted but relieved, Xiao Yan reflected on the fragility of life and the helplessness doctors sometimes face, recalling her deceased fiancé, Lin Zhiyuan, and acknowledging that she couldn't have handled the overwhelming situation alone. Later, in the Emergency Department, a grandmother brought in her granddaughter, Lin Lin, who had been suffering from a week-long high fever, headache, fatigue, and sore throat, eventually falling unconscious. Bai Shu harshly chastised the grandmother for the delayed treatment.

When Lin Lin's parents arrived, they immediately started arguing and blaming the grandmother. Bai Shu sternly ordered them out of the room. After examination, Bai Shu diagnosed Lin Lin with human herpesviruses, commonly known as the "kissing virus," which is transmitted through saliva. He admonished the grandmother about unhygienic practices, such as kissing the child on the mouth, tasting food before feeding, or sharing utensils, and warned of the life-threatening complications that could arise from delayed care.

Outside, Lin Lin's parents decided to take over her care and hire a nanny, implying the grandmother was unfit, causing her to break down in tears. Xiao Yan, returning Lin Lin's favorite toy to the weeping grandmother, gently advised the family about maintaining hygiene, but also urged the parents not to solely blame the elderly, highlighting that children need a loving family atmosphere, not just scientific parenting.

Xiao Yan later confronted Bai Shu about his unusually harsh behavior, stating it was unlike him to scold patients' families. Bai Shu explained that he became angry witnessing a child suffer due to family negligence, stressing how fragile children are. While he acknowledged his loss of emotional control, he enigmatically claimed to understand the pain of a sick child's parents "more than anyone else." Puzzled, Xiao Yan wondered if Bai Shu had a child of his own.

Just then, Little Guang was rushed into the Emergency Department after fainting during PE class due to thalassemia. Xu Yiran immediately recognized Little Guang as Bai Shu's son and administered a blood transfusion. Bai Shu rushed to his son's side, arranging for Little Guang to stay in the EICU for observation due to signs of a cold, given his already weakened condition.

Xu Yiran later explained to Xiao Yan that Little Guang was diagnosed with thalassemia major at birth, and doctors predicted he wouldn't live past his first birthday. However, Bai Shu, through his relentless care, defied all odds, allowing Little Guang to reach eight years old.

Xiao Yan, recalling a similar case of a young girl with severe thalassemia she encountered abroad who unfortunately passed away at three despite the best treatment, finally understood the root of Bai Shu's unwavering medical philosophy: his profound belief in miracles and his determination to never give up on any hope for life, even if it meant going against a patient's expressed wishes, was born from his own son's miraculous survival.

When Little Guang awoke, Bai Shu playfully scolded him for not following instructions and staying in the classroom during PE, playfully confiscating his allowance. Jiang Shan, visiting Jiang Xian Yun in the adjacent room, noticed Little Guang and greeted him. Little Guang, recognizing her as "Dad's colleague, Auntie Jiang," asked why she wasn't wearing a white coat like a doctor. Jiang Shan clarified she was a nurse and was on leave to care for her own sick family member.

Little Guang, being an understanding boy, wished her well. Bai Shu jokingly chided Little Guang for his talkativeness, but Little Guang cheekily implied he learned it through his father's "teaching by precept and example." Bai Shu then promised to take him to visit his grandparents in their hometown once he was discharged.

Meanwhile, Lin Zhi and Tang Hua gossiped about Bai Shu secretly having an eight-year-old son, but Xiao Yan quickly intervened, reminding them to respect his privacy and refrain from gossip. Lu Ping'an also approached Bai Shu about Little Guang, expressing regret for not knowing earlier. Bai Shu simply stated that Little Guang was close by in the EICU and that Lu Ping'an, as a leader, had "bigger things to worry about." Soon after, Jiang Shan approached Bai Shu, ready to apologize for her earlier distress and accusations.
