A meeting is convened where Lu Ping'an announces that Ge Hong, the wife of Huaman Real Estate's chairman, who is known to be donating a new laboratory building to Tongshan Hospital, has relapsed breast cancer and wishes to transfer for treatment. He emphasizes the need to show "enthusiasm" as per Dean Jiang's instructions.
Lu Ping'an initially assigns Xiao Yan as Ge Hong's attending physician, but Xiao Yan firmly refuses, stating she has too many patients and the case is not suitable for the ER. After Xiao Yan leaves, Lu Ping'an asks Xu Yiran, who also declines, citing his lack of seniority. Bai Shu then volunteers to take the case. Lu Ping'an, after some hesitation, agrees but warns Bai Shu that Ge Hong has a bad temper and is quite mean.
Bai Shu assures him he can handle it and will take responsibility for any issues. Jiang Shan also assures that she will personally supervise the nursing care for Ge Hong. Bai Shu reviews Ge Hong's case and recommends a complete bilateral mastectomy to remove the lesions and prevent cancer from spreading, warning that otherwise, her condition would be incurable. Ge Hong initially dismisses his advice, asking if he could perform miracles.
Bai Shu clarifies that he would not be performing her surgery and that preventing the spread of cancer cells would already be the greatest miracle. Ge Hong adamantly refuses the mastectomy. When Bai Shu attempts to leverage the situation for a transfer back to cardiac surgery, Dean Jiang curtly tells him to leave. Observing Bai Shu's frustration, Xiao Yan suggests investigating the underlying reasons for Ge Hong's refusal.
She shows Bai Shu photos of Ge Hong as a beautiful young woman, noting that Ge Hong, despite being almost 50, appears much younger and is very conscious of her looks and figure. Xu Yiran reveals that Ge Hong is currently in a conflict with a younger, attractive woman over her husband. He deduces that Ge Hong views a mastectomy as a surrender in this fight.
Bai Shu expresses dismay at Ge Hong's "stupidity" for jeopardizing her life for a man who hasn't even visited her in the hospital. Xiao Yan agrees that such a sacrifice is foolish. Changing the subject, Xiao Yan informs them that Ge Hong has a daughter, Li Xuan, studying in the UK, and suggests that Li Xuan might be able to persuade her mother. She provides Li Xuan's email address.
Bai Shu drafts an email, and at Xiao Yan's suggestion, includes a line asking Li Xuan to return to care for her mother. Jiang Shan returns home to find her husband, Xian Yun, has accidentally made a mess while trying to take care of himself. Feeling guilty, Xian Yun apologizes for creating more work for Jiang Shan, who is already tired and has a cold.
He suggests they hire a caregiver and asks Jiang Shan to contact Lao Pan, the male caregiver they had considered before. That night, Xian Yun secretly messages Lu Ping'an, explaining their need for a caregiver, worried that Jiang Shan might be too embarrassed to ask. The next morning, Lu Ping'an informs Jiang Shan that he has already contacted Lao Pan, who is available and happy to return. Jiang Shan expresses gratitude, though she feels she has been a burden.
Lu Ping'an reassures her, promising to arrange for Lao Pan to meet her that afternoon to familiarize himself with the house, leaving the start date up to her. He playfully warns her that once her home life is settled, he'll assign her more work. Later, a young woman, Li Xuan, arrives at the hospital, immediately praising Bai Shu's good looks and flirting with him.
Bai Shu attempts to discuss her mother's condition, emphasizing that Ge Hong is refusing a highly successful surgery and urging Li Xuan to persuade her. Li Xuan vehemently refuses, asserting that her mother only sees her as "a tool to get revenge on my father" and would not listen to her. Despite her reluctance, Bai Shu convinces Li Xuan to visit Ge Hong, suggesting it might be her last opportunity. In Ge Hong's ward, the reunion is tense.
Ge Hong immediately criticizes Li Xuan's revealing clothing. Li Xuan retorts with sarcastic remarks about her mother's choice of ward and her father's absence, implying Ge Hong is a "lonely senior." Ge Hong dismisses Li Xuan, telling her she is fine and to leave. Before departing, Li Xuan exchanges contact information with a somewhat traditional Bai Shu, suggesting they "hang out" in the future.
Xu Yiran later shares information he gleaned from Ge Hong's assistant: Ge Hong sent Li Xuan to study abroad alone when she was ten, without her father's knowledge, causing Li Xuan to feel abandoned and fostering a cold relationship with her mother. Xu Yiran speculates this was to prevent Li Xuan from "getting in her way" of battling her husband's mistresses.
Bai Shu adds that Li Xuan views herself as a "tool" for her mother's revenge against her unfaithful father, to separate them and prevent him from seeing his daughter. They realize that Ge Hong's refusal of surgery is likely driven by hatred and a desire not to appear defeated in her marital conflict, rather than love for her husband. Despite the deep-seated animosity, Xiao Yan maintains her belief that both mother and daughter still deeply care for each other.
Bai Shu arranges a meeting with Li Xuan, accompanied by Xu Yiran. Li Xuan openly flirts, acknowledging Xu Yiran's attractiveness but affirming Bai Shu's superior looks. Bai Shu then presents information gathered by Xiao Yan, highlighting Ge Hong's long history of donating to maternal and child welfare charities as evidence of her deep underlying affection for Li Xuan. Bai Shu directly tells Li Xuan that she also cares for her mother but is unwilling to admit it.
Stung by this observation, Li Xuan angrily denies it, questions Bai Shu's right to comment, and abruptly leaves. Xu Yiran expresses skepticism about this strategy, but Bai Shu remains optimistic. Li Xuan is later seen loitering outside Ge Hong's intensive care unit, still unable to bring herself to enter. She tells Bai Shu she is waiting for Xu Yiran. Meanwhile, Xiao Yan discovers a web novel written by Li Xuan four years prior, finding it through her social media.
The novel, though under a pen name, contains details matching Li Xuan's personal information, and its plot features a protagonist abandoned by her mother, living in the UK, yet yearning for maternal love. Xiao Yan interprets this as Li Xuan's true, buried feelings. Bai Shu presents this novel to Ge Hong, suggesting she read it for potential insight.
Ge Hong, however, cynically dismisses it as a manipulative tactic by Bai Shu to secure her cooperation for the hospital's new laboratory building. She reiterates her refusal for surgery and demands a consultation with the oncology department for an alternative treatment plan, threatening to switch doctors. Bai Shu merely advises her to prepare tissues for reading and to manage her emotions to avoid affecting her health. That night, Ge Hong reads Li Xuan's novel, which deeply moves her to tears.
She then opens a folder on her computer containing numerous photos she secretly took of Li Xuan throughout her time studying and living in the UK. Bai Shu enters and confronts her about the photos, suggesting she show them to Li Xuan, who believes her mother doesn't love her, and to stop living in hatred. Ge Hong angrily refuses and orders him to leave.
Bai Shu later explains to Xu Yiran his belief that Ge Hong sent Li Xuan abroad not out of abandonment, but to protect her from being entangled in the bitter conflict between her parents. Since Ge Hong is unlikely to show the photos herself, Bai Shu and Xu Yiran decide to find a way to get the photos to Li Xuan.
Xu Yiran, after confirming with Li Xuan the dire consequences of metastatic breast cancer, arranges for Ge Hong's assistant to secretly retrieve Ge Hong's computer. He then gives the computer to Li Xuan. Upon seeing the decade's worth of secretly taken photos documenting her life and milestones in the UK, Li Xuan is profoundly moved to tears, realizing the depth of her mother's hidden affection. She confronts Ge Hong at a restaurant. Ge Hong admits to taking all the photos.
She explains that after sending Li Xuan to the UK as revenge against her father, she secretly followed Li Xuan to witness all her significant life moments, finding happiness in watching Li Xuan grow while her father remained ignorant. Ge Hong then reiterates that everything she did, from sending Li Xuan away to the present, was solely for revenge against her unfaithful husband.
She highlights that they are meeting in the same restaurant where they had their last meal before Li Xuan's departure ten years ago, now for Ge Hong to "send her away" again, urging Li Xuan to return to England and "never return." Devastated and enraged by her mother's words, Li Xuan declares she will "never forgive you in my whole life" and storms out without eating.
As Li Xuan prepares to return to the UK, she receives a text from Xu Yiran informing her that Ge Hong has fallen into a coma. She immediately rushes back to the hospital. Bai Shu explains that Ge Hong's coma is a result of a brain hemorrhage caused by high blood pressure, likely triggered by severe emotional distress, and is unrelated to her breast cancer.
He assures Li Xuan that the bleeding has stopped and her life is not in immediate danger. Bai Shu reveals that Ge Hong collapsed shortly after Li Xuan left the restaurant. He passionately asserts that Ge Hong's cruel words were not true, and her mother "actually loves you very much."
He explains that Ge Hong, afflicted with cancer, deliberately pushed Li Xuan away, wanting her to hate her, forget her, and forge a new life unburdened by her mother's illness or the ongoing marital strife. Bai Shu points out that Ge Hong failed to realize hatred cannot pave the way for a new beginning. Although Li Xuan finds it difficult to believe, Bai Shu urges her to consider that others close to her mother might know the truth. He stresses the urgency of Ge Hong's worsening cancer, reminding Li Xuan that "your mother really needs you" and that surgery is critical before it's too late.
