At the Lü residence, Jiang Xuening learned about You Fangyin and Lü Xian and angrily kicked Lü Xian out. Marriage was no trivial matter. She planned to discuss with Xie Wei to arrange for their divorce once the storm passed. But You Fangyin was firm—marrying was her best way to leave the You family, and Lü Xian treated her well, second only to Jiang Xuening. Seeing You Fangyin’s determination, Jiang Xuening went to speak with Lü Xian.

He truly loved You Fangyin and swore on his life that he would never mistreat her; otherwise, he wouldn’t earn a cent in his lifetime. Xue Dingfei brought many troubles to Xue Guogong but remained remarkably patient. Xie Wei wanted Xue Dingfei to buy time while he handled the rest. Since returning to the capital, no one had seen Lü Xian. Then news broke that he and You Fangyin had married. Jiang Xuening did not look pleased as she left.

The next day, Xie Wei went to the palace to meet Gu Chunfang, and together they proposed to the Emperor to exempt Zhang Zhe from the traditional three-year mourning period. With internal and external crises, the court needed capable people. Upon learning of this, the Empress Dowager summoned Xue Shu to the palace. The Emperor agreed to the exemption and rewarded those involved in the Tongzhou matter. Shen Jie was to select a consort.

The Empress Dowager summoned Xue Shu to discuss it. Shen Jie favored Jiang Xuehui. Not wanting conflict, the Empress Dowager agreed, and Xue Shu reluctantly complied. The Emperor rewarded Xue Dingfei generously. Xue Dingfei took the chance to scold Xue Guogong and even hit Xue Ye. Xue Guogong couldn't bear it anymore and kicked Xue Dingfei in front of everyone. Xue Dingfei ran around the courtyard and even gave Xue Ye a kick in return.

After a full day of work, Xie Wei summoned Lü Xian, who genuinely cared for You Fangyin. Xie Wei also sent a gift. Shen Jie had been keeping vigil at a temple and finally saw Jiang Xuehui. He hoped she would participate in the consort selection. Though hesitant, Jiang Xuehui knew everyone thought Shen Jie’s wife could only be her.

Shen Jie said that his wife must be someone he truly loved—if Jiang Xuehui would take one step, he’d take the remaining ninety-nine. Jiang Xuening and Jiang Xuehui entered the palace that day. Shen Zhiyi was delighted to see Jiang Xuening. Xue Shu came up to mock Jiang Xuehui, only to be rebuffed by Jiang Xuening.

Xue Dingfei tearfully told the Emperor that Xue Guogong had beaten him and claimed that Xue Guogong said the Emperor had long forgotten his support from the past. The Emperor’s expression changed immediately and summoned Xue Guogong. Xue Dingfei and Xie Wei performed a coordinated act, revealing that Xue Guogong’s military achievements were false. Everyone assumed Xue Shu would become Shen Jie’s princess consort. Jiang Xuehui worried she would disgrace the Jiang family if she lost.

What could she do if fate was so? Outside the palace, they encountered Xue Dingfei and Xie Wei. Seeing Xie Wei reminded Jiang Xuening of that day. He asked her to come play the zither with him. She tried to run but stopped when he mentioned news about Yan Lin. At home, Xue Shu found Xue Ye injured. Furious, he wanted to ask the Empress Dowager to strip Xue Dingfei of his post.

Their mother asked Xue Shu to find a way to preserve Xue Ye’s title. Meanwhile, Xue Shu overheard that Jiang Xuening had also gone to Tongzhou. Xie Wei had arranged everything for Yan Lin and Yan Mu. Jiang Xuening thought perhaps Yan Lin was always meant to be free. She asked why Xie Wei had summoned her, but he wouldn’t say. She turned to leave, and his gaze grew uneasy.
