The Emperor asked about Xie Wei and Jiang Xuening. Jiang Xuening, worried Xie Wei might be suspected, quickly feigned innocence, saying Xie Wei treated her differently and even made her learn the zither alone—which was quite unfair. The Emperor laughed, told her not to overthink, and privately thought her childish nature amusing. Jiang Xuening thought her naïveté had helped Xie Wei get by, unaware the Emperor was actually worrying about Xie Wei’s marriage prospects.

Zhang Zhe broke off the engagement with the Yao family. Chen Ying was furious, afraid they’d be implicated. Chen Ying visited Xie Wei and mentioned Zhang Zhe’s background. Xie Wei found out that Zhang Zhe and Lord Gu were close, not ordinary friends, and told Chen Ying to keep him updated on any news about Zhang Zhe. That morning, the Emperor sent many gifts to the Jiang family, finally learning of Jiang Xuening’s grievances.

Her father was anxious, while Lady Meng scolded her for always stirring trouble and being reckless. Jiang Xuening quickly argued with her again. Afterward, Jiang Xuehui comforted Lady Meng, saying she knew the scolding came from love. Besides, no one really knew what happened in the palace, and it wasn’t necessarily Jiang Xuening’s fault. Lady Meng then worried about Jiang Xuehui’s marriage—she should have found a good match, but now might be affected by Jiang Xuening.

Jiang Xuehui simply said fate is in heaven’s hands and that suffering could be a blessing. Late at night, Jiang Xuening visited her father, saying the palace matter was indeed a setup by the Empress Dowager to implicate the Yan family but had been resolved. Jiang Xuening didn’t know Yan Mu had been injured, though everyone was worried about the Yan family.

Yan Lin and Jiang Xuening were childhood friends; Jiang Boyou liked Yan Lin and had thought they would eventually marry. But now it seemed unlikely, and he feared Jiang Xuening would be heartbroken. Jiang Xuening said she only saw Yan Lin as a friend and asked her father to help the Yan family if they were in trouble. The Duke of Xue received letters showing correspondence between Prince Pingnan and the Yan family and immediately presented them to the Emperor.

The Emperor summoned Xie Wei and ordered the Yan family confined for investigation and to quickly locate the missing part of the letter. When the Xue family came to search, Yan Lin blocked them by himself. Jiang Xuening heard about the letter from Zhou Yinzhi and asked if he had any ideas. She reminded him that since he had already pledged loyalty to her, he should not waver.

Zhou Yinzhi said even if not him, someone else would report it, so if anything further was found about the Yan family, he would report it to the Xue family as well. Jiang Xuening needed money and arranged to meet You Fangyin. Xie Wei decided to meet Zhang Zhe and, upon hearing Jiang Xuening had gone to see Zhou Yinzhi, specifically told his men not to stop her if she came to see him.

You Fangyin gave Jiang Xuening 2,500 taels and revealed that Lü Xian and Xie Wei were working together. Jiang Xuening said they would split it fifty-fifty. You Fangyin thought she was being dismissed and panicked, but Jiang Xuening reassured her that she just wanted her to live well. This time, the problem Jiang Xuening faced couldn’t be solved with a mere thousand or two; she asked You Fangyin to help with another business deal.

The Zhang family canceled the engagement, and Yao Xi was harshly scolded by her father and deeply saddened. Zhang Zhe disliked drinking with colleagues and used an excuse to go out, where he coincidentally saw Jiang Xuening waiting for a carriage downstairs. In the past life, on a similar rainy day, Jiang Xuening had stepped on his robe to keep him from leaving. Zhang Zhe had torn it off and told her to behave.

The two gazed at each other from afar, and Xie Wei, watching, was very displeased. Chen Ying brought Jiang Xuening to see Xie Wei, but before he could speak, Chen Ying rejected his request. Xie Wei wasn’t angry—in fact, he admired him more.
