Ma Shang's mother felt that An Jing looked familiar. She searched through Ma Shang's room and eventually found an old photograph of Ma Shang with An Jing, confirming that the An Jing who recently visited their home was the same girl Ma Shang dated in college. Ma Shang's father dismissed her efforts, but Ma Shang's mother was convinced that Ma Shang still deeply cared for An Jing, noting that he hadn't pursued any relationships since their breakup.

She hoped they would rekindle their romance so he wouldn't remain single. An Jing prepared to go to Ma Shang's home to deliver the notice that the investigation was concluded, even though Du Meng offered to go in her place. Meanwhile, in the underground parking lot, Ma Shang had a near-collision with Wu Miao.

Ma Shang inquired if National Security agents had visited Wu Miao while he was on sick leave, mentioning that Yu Haoran had vouched for him, stating he was in the lab during Jia Changan's accident. Wu Miao appeared visibly uncomfortable during this conversation. An Jing arrived at Ma Shang's parents' house, officially informing Ma Shang's father that the investigation was over.

Ma Shang's mother, recognizing An Jing, warmly insisted she stay for dinner, swiftly adding that An Jing and Ma Shang were university classmates. Unable to decline the enthusiastic invitation, An Jing went inside and immediately sent a text to Ma Shang, urging him not to return home, but her message was too late as Ma Shang walked through the door. Ma Shang feigned surprise upon seeing An Jing.

During dinner, Ma Shang's mother continued to press An Jing, recalling how Ma Shang was "asking the whole world" for An Jing's whereabouts after she suddenly dropped out of school and was "crying" while holding his phone. Ma Shang was deeply embarrassed by his mother's revelations. Ma Shang's mother then tried to play matchmaker, asserting that fate had not broken the connection between An Jing and Ma Shang.

To divert the conversation, Ma Shang asked An Jing how she came to work for National Security, which led to an awkward silence. After dinner, Ma Shang walked An Jing outside. He clarified that his current feelings for her were not based on their past relationship but on who she is now—straightforward, clever, independent, proper, and beautiful.

An Jing reminded him of their professional boundaries, emphasizing that they were in a peculiar period and, as members of the task force, needed to be careful about personal relations when investigating cases. Ma Shang admitted he had struggled with this, having initially tried to joke and use "sweet nothings," but realized that being indirect would only make him seem unreliable and that An Jing probably wouldn't understand his intentions.

He told her she was not required to give an immediate answer, suggesting she could respond once the task force was disbanded. An Jing then bid him farewell, but a subtle smile played on her lips after he left. Back home, Ma Shang's mother eagerly questioned him about An Jing. Ma Shang told her that An Jing already had a boyfriend. His mother, undeterred, reasoned that An Jing wasn't married, so there was still a chance.

Later, in his room, Ma Shang texted An Jing, expressing his desire to share something from his heart. An Jing replied that she couldn't give him an answer, explaining that she had experienced a "nightmare" during their separation and didn't want to dwell on past events.

Before Ma Shang could send another message, An Jing sent a follow-up text, reminding him that the mission came first and that they should discuss other matters later, then told him to go to bed early. At National Security, Department Chief Song reviewed Dinghua's old transaction records. The prices were suspiciously close to the reserve price, leading him to believe that Miao Huanyang was not clean.

He instructed Ma Shang to apply pressure on Miao Fei while An Jing was tasked with bringing Miao Huanyang in for questioning. Ma Shang expressed concern that Miao Fei might be coerced, but An Jing assured him that she would proceed carefully. An Jing and Du Meng then went to Miao Huanyang's home. They arrived as he was having dinner with Miao Fei and Miao Lu, who was annoyed by their presence.

An Jing informed Miao Huanyang that new findings required his cooperation for examination, and he promptly agreed, despite the visible concern of his daughters as he was escorted away. During the interrogation, Miao Huanyang became nervous seeing the documents presented by An Jing and Du Meng. He firmly denied any wrongdoing concerning the suspicious early transaction records of Dinghua, claiming he was young and inexperienced, often suffering losses.

When asked about his sudden departure from Dinghua before Jia Changan's death, Miao Huanyang attributed it to health reasons, specifically his heart condition. An Jing and Du Meng suggested that Jia Changan's death might be related to his ore smuggling, which Miao Huanyang had approved. They expressed concern that those involved might threaten Miao Huanyang's life. Miao Huanyang maintained his innocence, insisting he knew nothing.

An Jing then informed him that while he was free to move around and not under any travel restrictions, he needed to keep his cellphone on. She also mentioned that the National Security's Economic Investigation Division had been contacted regarding Dinghua's early transaction records, and he should be prepared for their investigation. Miao Huanyang continued to deny any involvement.

Department Chief Song, however, confirmed that their objective for the interrogation had been met: approval for surveillance monitoring had been obtained, and An Jing was put in charge of the operation. Miao Huanyang returned home, much to the relief of Miao Fei and Miao Lu. Unaware that he was now being monitored, he reassured them that their family had overcome this hurdle. Miao Fei, however, suspected the situation was more complex.

Later, Ma Shang informed An Jing that his investigation into Wu Miao revealed issues, but Wu Miao was likely not the commercial spy they were looking for. He suggested that Miao Huanyang and Miao Fei might be involved in Jia Changan's smuggling but were probably not connected to his death. Ma Shang cautioned An Jing against blind optimism, reminding her that they might have only found the beginning of a complex maze.

He emphasized the importance of thorough preparation and encouraged her to maintain the team's morale, as fatigue would eventually set in, and she was the only one who could encourage them. An Jing thanked him for his reminder and trust.
