Ordinary Greatness Episode 30 Recap
> Ordinary Greatness Recap
Li Dawei offered Xia Jie a sandwich to help her de-stress. Xia Jie expressed her frustration, lamenting that she knew her mother too well, and the "knot in her heart wouldn't be easily untied." Li Dawei gently advised her not to be pessimistic and to take things slowly, assuring her that he was there for her. Meanwhile, at the police station, Cheng Hao, Ye Wei, and Gao Chao attempted to appease Mrs. Xia.
Mrs. Xia angrily accused Wang Shouyi and Cheng Hao of being ungrateful and failing to protect Xia Jie, despite Xia Junxiong's dying wish. When Gao Chao attempted to calm Mrs. Xia by praising Xia Jie's dedication, Mrs. Xia vehemently reiterated her concerns, arguing that Xia Jie's father sacrificed his life, and she didn't want Xia Jie to face the same danger. She then accused Wang Shouyi and Cheng Hao of betraying Xia Junxiong's dying wish, failing to protect Xia Jie.
Unable to listen further, Gao Chao impulsively slapped the table in protest. Mrs. Xia then realized they were in a conciliation room and accused Ye Wei of treating her like a suspect or a troublesome person. Gao Chao apologized, explaining that hitting the table was an oversight. Mrs. Xia, unrelenting, claimed Wang Shouyi was deliberately avoiding her and declared her intention to speak with Director Song to have Xia Jie transferred to the Household Registration Department.
Ye Wei agreed to provide a response within three days. After Mrs. Xia left, Gao Chao questioned Ye Wei's promise, but Ye Wei believed Wang Shouyi would return within three days to handle the matter. Gao Chao also remarked on Mrs. Xia's demanding nature, suggesting Xia Jie had no choice with such a mother. Ye Wei then recalled an urgent meeting called by Secretary Wei of the Balihe subdistrict office, which she was supposed to attend with Wang Shouyi.
This meeting was to organize a joint operation as part of the population census, involving a comprehensive review of the population, including illegal property rentals, unlicensed operations, and foreign resident registration, as well as safety inspections. She asked Gao Chao and Zhang Zhijie to attend with her. Gao Chao initially resisted, citing a case he needed to investigate, but Ye Wei insisted, reminding him of his responsibility for community affairs.
Gao Chao then instructed Zhang Zhijie to lead a team with Sun Qiancheng and Auxiliary Police Wang to encourage residents with expired ID cards to renew them. Later, Qizi approached Cheng Hao, looking unwell, and asked about Wang Shouyi and Ye Wei. He learned Wang Shouyi was on leave and Ye Wei was at a meeting. Qizi confided in Cheng Hao that he desperately needed to take leave, or his wife would divorce him.
Cheng Hao, unable to approve the leave himself, promised to speak to Ye Wei upon her return, although he noted that "divorce" might not be a valid reason for a leave of absence. Meanwhile, unable to reach Ye Wei on her phone, Mrs. Xia called Cheng Hao, demanding to know when Xia Jie's transfer would be settled and insisting that Xia Jie stop going on duty immediately. Cheng Hao assured her he would relay the message to Ye Wei.
After the meeting, Ye Wei received a phone call from her son's teacher, Mrs. Wu, informing her that her son was in trouble again and she needed to go to the school immediately. Feeling overwhelmed because her husband was on a business trip, Ye Wei was hesitant to leave the station before assigning the important post-meeting tasks.
However, Gao Chao and Zhang Zhijie convinced her to go, promising they would convey the meeting's spirit to the entire station and handle the workload. They even offered her the police car. After settling her son for the night, Ye Wei called Gao Chao late to check on the station. Gao Chao informed her that he and Cheng Hao had organized a meeting, conveyed the municipal and district directives, and made deployment plans for the population review.
He also mentioned rejecting Qizi's leave request, having assigned him to the joint operation due to the existing staff shortage. Ye Wei acknowledged Qizi's situation and mentioned Mrs. Xia's continuous calls. Gao Chao confirmed Mrs. Xia had also called him, but he was busy dealing with other cases. He continued his interrogation of the convenience store owner regarding a recent theft.
The theft was complicated by the store's broken surveillance cameras and the owner's social media post about the broken cameras, which was seen by over three thousand friends. Gao Chao noted the lack of forced entry and the large number of fingerprints collected, making it difficult to identify suspects due to high foot traffic. He also asked for the contact of the store owner's partner, who also had a key.
Gao Chao's night was relentless; he dealt with an elderly woman reporting her lost "son" (a dog), and later, two drunk men who made a false police report for a bet, whom he then brought back to the station for violating public security laws. The next morning, Xia Jie visited Ye Wei, expressing her strong desire not to be transferred to the Household Registration Department.
She stated that being a police officer was her choice, and she was willing to face all dangers and difficulties. Ye Wei, concerned about Mrs. Xia's persistence, decided to assign Xia Jie to the joint enforcement team for the population review, a comparatively safer task, explaining that the team was severely understaffed. Xia Jie, however, felt her life was her own and not her mother's.
Ye Wei empathized with Xia Jie's mother's protective instincts, especially given her family's past trauma, and urged Xia Jie to try and understand her mother. When Xia Jie wondered why Wang Shouyi hadn't told her directly, Ye Wei reminded her that he had promised not to overprotect her. Soon after, Qizi once again requested a long leave from Ye Wei.
Ye Wei explained the station's severe manpower shortage and heavy workload, especially with Wang Shouyi's absence, making a long leave impossible for now. She assured him they would discuss it with Wang Shouyi upon his return, but for now, he needed to join the community joint operation. Adding to Ye Wei's stress, her husband, Lao Wang, called to inform her that he was coming home tomorrow, but his father had gone to the hospital alone.
Gao Chao then briefed the officers for the joint population review, dividing them into several teams led by Zhang Zhijie, Qizi, himself, and Ye Wei. However, just as they were about to deploy, Ye Wei received another call from her husband, Lao Wang, informing her that her father had gone to the hospital alone. Concerned, she told Cheng Hao, who immediately instructed her to go to the hospital and offered to lead her team.
At the hospital, Ye Wei accompanied her father for his check-up. She called Mrs. Wu, her son's teacher, to apologize for missing another parent-teacher conference, promising to visit the school later. Mrs. Wu expressed her annoyance, noting Ye Wei's repeated absences and the importance of a child's education, before Ye Wei had to abruptly hang up as her father's number was called for his appointment.
During their part of the population review, Zhao Jiwei and Auxiliary Police Wang encountered an elderly man named Lu Fugui whose ID card had expired. Lu Fugui, feeling neglected by his children, resisted their advice to renew it, joking about being a "dead" illegal resident. Zhao Jiwei, concerned, obtained the contact for Lu Fugui's son, Lu Changsheng, and called him.
Meanwhile, Qizi and his team went to investigate an illegal rental at the home of an old Mrs. Zhang, a notoriously difficult resident. After a long wait, Mrs. Zhang finally opened the door and immediately started verbally abusing Qizi. Already stressed, Qizi angrily reprimanded her. Gao Chao, hearing the commotion, arrived to mediate, but Qizi, still furious, lashed out at Gao Chao. Back at the station, Ye Wei saw her officers still busy.
Gao Chao reported Qizi's difficult behavior with Mrs. Zhang and his outburst at him. As Ye Wei contemplated talking to Qizi, Mrs. Xia called her again. Ye Wei reluctantly answered and tried to explain the situation. Xia Jie, nearby, overheard the call and, frustrated, called her mother to threaten to "cut ties" if she didn't stop interfering. Cheng Hao, also nearby, clearly heard Xia Jie's desperate words.
Later, Li Dawei and Zhao Jiwei returned to their shared apartment to find a dejected Xia Jie. Li Dawei offered to help her with whatever was troubling her. Separately, Cheng Hao went to see Mrs. Xia, who accused him of being responsible for Xia Junxiong's death and questioned his motives for visiting, asking if he was there to discuss Xia Jie's transfer or to persuade her. Cheng Hao replied that he was there to talk about his relationship with Xia Junxiong.
