The Earth Fiend, revealed to be the transformed Gou Ya, appeared in its true form, and the South Mountain Hunters quickly moved to capture it. The creature was agile and powerful, making the pursuit dangerous, and only Nie Jiuluo could match its strength. During the chase, Nie Jiuluo narrowly avoided injury but was startled when she spotted a necklace on the Earth Fiend's neck.
Distracted, she was almost attacked, but Yan Tuo intervened and saved her, suffering severe injuries in the process. The Earth Fiend escaped. Nie Jiuluo quickly bandaged Yan Tuo, then rushed him to Milan Mountain, the highest peak in Xicang. She explained that Earth Fiend wounds must be cauterized with "natural fire," which is sunlight, otherwise they will fester and become fatal.
She told him that she would do what she could, but his full recovery depended on the sun appearing, adding that "if heaven doesn't help," she couldn't save him. During his ordeal, Yan Tuo had a brief flashback of his sister, Xinxin. Meanwhile, Lin Xirou learned from Xiong Hei that the creature wasn't Gou Ya but a primal Earth Fiend showing signs of domestication. She immediately tasked Xiong Hei with an urgent matter.
In the forest, Xing Shen hurried deep inside, using a unique whistle to summon the Earth Fiend, which responded to his call. Xiong Hei, along with his team, was already searching for traces of the creature in the pouring rain. Xing Shen then returned to his group and confessed that he had captured and tamed this Earth Fiend many years ago, and it had somehow escaped the base today.
He revealed that he had been trying to research and tame it for their own use. His companions were shocked, but Jiang Baichuan intervened, explaining that the Earth Fiend, named Locust, was captured 20 years ago. It was a collective decision by all South Mountain Hunters at the time, including Mr. Crip and Mrs. Hua, to leave it with Xing Shen for study, despite the risks.
A somber Xing Shen explained that Locust had escaped only to protect him, not to intentionally attack them, as it had sensed he was in danger. He now only wished for Nie Jiuluo to end its suffering quickly to spare it further torment. At this moment, the clear sound of bells echoed through the forest, confirming Xiong Hei's search party was closing in. Xing Shen also mentioned he had temporarily placed Locust in a cave on the west slope.
The situation was critical. Jiang Baichuan, with a resolute expression, ordered Xing Shen to take Mr. Crip, the still-recovering Old Blade, and the other wounded, and retreat immediately. He, along with a few others, would stay behind to desperately block Xiong Hei's men, buying time for Xing Shen's group to escape. Jiang Baichuan emphasized that it was an order, entrusting the future of South Mountain to Xing Shen. Soon after, Xiong Hei swiftly dealt with several South Mountain Hunters.
When he tried to forcibly take Jiang Baichuan, he found his subordinates were no match for him. Realizing Jiang Baichuan's strength, Xiong Hei stepped in personally and, after a fierce battle, finally subdued him. On the phone, Xiong Hei informed Lin Xirou that while he hadn't found the Earth Fiend, he had captured Jiang Baichuan, the leader of South Mountain, to which Lin Xirou instructed him to "treat him properly."
As the sun gradually rose, its warm rays fell upon Nie Jiuluo's face, captivating Yan Tuo. Nie Jiuluo explained that while his external wounds were not severe, the infection was causing his discomfort. She placed a scorching hot iron plate, heated by the sunlight, onto Yan Tuo's wound, causing him to wince in pain. He joked about whether she was treating or torturing him, but she insisted he wouldn't recover otherwise.
She clarified that her actions were out of duty as a South Mountain Hunter, not personal trust, as he was simply another innocent person harmed by an Earth Fiend. Yan Tuo confidently responded that he would earn her trust. Noticing the significant healing effect of the light therapy and appreciating the pleasant surroundings, Yan Tuo decided to cook instant noodles for Nie Jiuluo as a gesture of gratitude.
He prepared "Xicang Instant Noodles" and offered it as his "most precious thanks," sharing a memory from his impoverished childhood when he and his sister, Xinxin, always longed to eat a pack of these noodles. He revealed that Xinxin had gone missing a long time ago, and Nie Jiuluo asked if her disappearance was also connected to Lin Xirou.
Later, Nie Jiuluo advised him to take antibiotics and get a tetanus shot but to avoid hospitals to prevent leaving any evidence, to which Yan Tuo confirmed he had a trustworthy doctor friend who could help. Jiang Baichuan was brought before Lin Xirou. She greeted him courteously, assuring him that his people were safe for the time being.
Lin Xirou then revealed her true identity: they had met twenty years ago at the Golden Gate incident, during which Mr. Crip lost his leg. She was the cunning, adult Earth Fiend that had escaped back then, while they only managed to capture a younger one. She then confirmed that the Earth Fiend seen in the woods was indeed the one they had captured years ago.
On the way back to the city, Nie Jiuluo and Yan Tuo engaged in a long conversation. Nie Jiuluo observed that the "Hermit Duck" pendant and the Five Emperor Coins hanging in his car seemed out of place with his image. Yan Tuo explained the coins were for warding off evil and that the "Hermit Duck," representing a tranquil recluse, combined with the duck's symbolism of warmth, made a perfect combination.
Nie Jiuluo playfully accused him of pretending to be knowledgeable. Yan Tuo then grew serious and revealed that his missing sister, Xinxin, adored ducks, so they always reminded him of her. He also found the duck's "restrained and disciplined" image reflective of himself. He admitted he had "snatched it right off" a client's car because he liked it so much. Yan Tuo reiterated his determination to find Xinxin and give her the duck.
Moved, Nie Jiuluo promised to personally craft a unique, limited-edition duck for Xinxin, assuring him it would be far more exquisite. Yan Tuo jokingly asked her to repeat her promise so he could record it, but Nie Jiuluo simply told him to focus on driving.
