Ever Night Season 2 Episode 4 Recap
> Ever Night Season 2 Recap
Ning Que, impatient to continue, snatched the pear from Sangsang's hand and began eating it, urging her to start the chess game quickly. Master Qu Ni playfully remarked about them "sharing" the pear, an omen of separation. Before Sangsang could make her move, the very last leaf on the tree fluttered down onto the chessboard, causing Sangsang to suddenly collapse.
Ning Que was frantic, but Qi Shan calmly stated that Sangsang had gone to another world and was now inside the chessboard. Ning Que attempted to strike the chessboard with his sword, but the impact sent him reeling and he fainted. In a daze, Ning Que found himself amidst mountains. He spotted Sangsang and called out to her, but she had been summoned by the Heavenly Maid and had lost part of her memory, not recognizing him.
Ning Que desperately tried to awaken her memories, speaking of their past, until Sangsang finally remembered. Overjoyed, they embraced. When Sangsang and Ning Que awoke, they found themselves lying under the large tree where they had been playing chess, with Qu Ni and Baoshu observing them.
Qu Ni remarked on them being a couple helplessly in love, and Baoshu recognized the chessboard as a powerful artifact of Sect Tian Qing, believing that both Ning Que and Sangsang had been reborn by entering it. Baoshu declared his intent to use the Yulan Bell to ascertain if Ning Que was the Son of Lord of the Deceased, driven by a desire for revenge for his son, Dao Shi.
Qi Shan firmly opposed this, cautioning Baoshu not to let hatred blind him. Despite Baoshu's insistence that he was acting for the common good, Qi Shan forcibly took the Yulan Bell from him and dismissed him. Qi Shan explained that Tian Qing was a holy place where killing intent should not be harbored, emphasizing that mercy was the law of Tian Qing, something he no longer saw in Baoshu.
He then pondered on how Sangsang had broken out of the chessboard, correcting Baoshu's assumption about courage by saying that the chessboard couldn't imprison them at all; they didn't need to break out.
Qi Shan warned Baoshu not to disrupt the peace of Mount Wa, and after Baoshu reluctantly backed down from a confrontation, Qi Shan declared he would have the Yulan Bell returned to Xuankong, allowing Baoshu to return as its Bell Holder only after Ning Que and the Daughter of Light had left. Later that night, Sangsang, while sorting through their finances, revealed they were in debt to Brother Chang and Brother Qi for seven hundred taels of silver.
She suggested renting out the House of Calligraphy to earn money, but Ning Que refused. Sangsang then mentioned a book containing records of gifts from the King and Princess, which Ning Que could sell in an emergency, but he again refused. She then admitted to having a secret stash of 2,100 taels of silver stored with Lady Jian, telling Ning Que to retrieve it if needed.
Sangsang, remembering her memory loss in the chessboard, worried about not being able to stay with Ning Que until they were old. She shared her final wishes, including revealing where she had hidden Mo Shanshan’s letters to Ning Que in a small black box. Ning Que quickly interrupted her, forbidding such talk and embracing her. He reassured her that Master Qi Shan would cure her illness. Qu Ni, upon learning that Qi Shan had confiscated the Yulan Bell, confronted Baoshu.
She scoffed at Qi Shan's supposed old age and clouded judgment for taking away the artifact meant to identify the Son of Lord of the Deceased. She encouraged Baoshu to remain determined to expose Ning Que, arguing that it was the only chance for all people, and promised to help him retrieve the Yulan Bell to ensure Ning Que remained on Mount Wa.
Qi Shan examined Sangsang and found her internal cold poison deeply rooted in her bone marrow and blood, making it impossible to completely remove. He proposed that Sangsang cultivate the Tian Qing method, which would allow her to control the cold qi within her body and alleviate her suffering. Sangsang immediately knelt, asking to be taught, and Qi Shan, moved, expressed his excitement at taking such a unique disciple in his twilight years.
Ning Que then presented Qi Shan with a bottle of Jiujiang Double Liquor, claiming it as a gift from the Sage that he had "stolen" from Confessing Cliff. Qi Shan was delighted, believing it was truly from the Sage, and reminisced about the Sage's previous stinginess. Ning Que silently apologized to the Sage for his deception. In return, Qi Shan gave Sangsang a scripture, urging her to read it diligently. That night, Sangsang stayed up late writing.
Ning Que, curious, secretly opened her notebook while she slept. Inside, he found a detailed list of ten points about himself, including his weapons, his status as Mr. Thirteen of the Academy, the master of the God-Startling Formation, his apprenticeship under Master Yanse, how he saved Sangsang, their homes in Wei City and the House of Calligraphy, his fondness for her spicy and sour noodles, and the Chicken Soup copybook he wrote for her.
The notes concluded with a powerful statement: "Young Master is the most important person to Sangsang, which is not allowed to be forgotten, even if death comes." Reading this, Ning Que was deeply moved and pondered what Sangsang had experienced in the chessboard to make her record these details so carefully.
The next morning, Ning Que met Qi Shan outside the cave and inquired about Sangsang's experience in the chessboard, also directly asking if he was the Son of Lord of the Deceased, fearing it would bring harm to Sangsang. Qi Shan responded philosophically, explaining that a future that can be foreseen is not truly the future, and if it's not certain, it can be changed. He advised Ning Que to stop overthinking and just go with the flow.
Ning Que agreed, stating that any future was acceptable as long as Sangsang was alive. Qi Shan then presented Ning Que with a book called "Tian Qing Palm," joking that it was an interesting book suitable for a "little kid" like Ning Que, despite Ning Que's protests.
Qi Shan then summoned Guan Hai and instructed him to return the Yulan Bell to Xuankong, strictly ordering that it must only be escorted by people from Lanke and must not fall into the hands of outsiders. As the Yulan Festival approached, various figures gathered at Mount Wa. Lu Chengjia spoke with Master Qu Ni, who expressed confidence that the Yulan Bell would reveal Ning Que's true identity as the Son of Lord of the Deceased.
Secretly pleased by this news, Lu Chengjia voiced her worry about what would happen if Ning Que wasn't the Son of Lord of the Deceased, but Qu Ni insisted that he had to be, in order to conquer Tang State and destroy the Academy. Meanwhile, Ning Que quickly grasped the essence of the "Tian Qing Palm," finding it brought him inner peace and dispelled his inner demons regarding the Son of Lord of the Deceased prophecy.
Sangsang’s health had also significantly improved, and she no longer felt cold. Ning Que promised Sangsang they would attend the grand Yulan Festival before returning to the Academy to live a peaceful life, herding cattle and feeding geese. Qi Shan, after confirming their progress and their determination to celebrate the festival, urged them to leave Mount Wa immediately afterward. However, on his way to Xuankong, Guan Hai was intercepted by Qu Ni. She demanded the Yulan Bell, but Guan Hai steadfastly refused, citing his master's orders. Enraged, Qu Ni attacked Guan Hai, knocked him unconscious, and seized the Yulan Bell.
