A Female Student Arrives at the Imperial College Recap
Episode 1 Recap
The Imperial College, a prestigious institution in Bianjing, was known to gather the finest scholars and teachers of the Song Dynasty. After the previous chief's resignation, the young and capable Deputy Chief Yan Yunzhi took over, shifting the focus from ornate literature to classical teachings and current affairs. Intrigued by the news, Sang Qi, clad in red and riding a fine steed, decided to visit the Imperial College herself to uncover the truth.
Meanwhile, Yan Yunzhi found his carriage deliberately agitated for the third time that month. When his coachman noted that the horse was about to run into Young Lady Song Jiayin, the beloved daughter of Grand Tutor Song, Yan Yunzhi calmly ordered him to accelerate, anticipating she would dodge. However, Sang Qi dramatically intervened, leaping from a rooftop to rescue Song Jiayin before seizing the reins and bringing the runaway horse to a halt.
Far from grateful, Song Jiayin accused Sang Qi of ruining her plans and asserted her identity as the daughter of Grand Tutor Song. Sang Qi, identifying herself as Sang Qi, boldly retorted that she never judged lives by status and challenged Song Jiayin to try and catch her. Upon hearing the name Sang Qi, Yan Yunzhi emerged from his carriage, his gaze filled with surprise and interest as he observed her.
Sang Qi, noting his silence, mistakenly concluded he couldn't speak, expressing pity before departing, unaware of his exasperated internal thoughts about being deemed mute. Later, at Qingfeng Restaurant, Sang Qi shared her surprising ambition with her childhood friend, Zhuo Wenyuan: to enroll in the Imperial College. Zhuo Wenyuan was astonished, reminding her that the academy, the most prestigious in the Song Dynasty, traditionally only accepted noblemen aged fourteen to nineteen.
Sang Qi was resolute, declaring that she would petition His Majesty to become the first female student, as it was the dying wish of her late brother, Sang Yu, for her to inherit his ambition and study there. Their conversation was interrupted by the demanding voice of Song Jiayin outside.
Inside the restaurant, Song Jiayin, despite learning Sang Qi was the daughter of Grand Commandant Sang, was disrespectful, calling her an "uncouth girl from the frontier" who had embarrassed her in front of her "future husband." Sang Qi and Zhuo Wenyuan then exchanged insults about Song Jiayin in their native dialect, which Song Jiayin, misinterpreting as compliments on her grace and beauty, encouraged.
This led to a bet: Sang Qi had to make Yan Yunzhi accept her pouch by the Lantern Festival. If she failed, she would perform publicly like an entertainer; if she succeeded, Song Jiayin would apologize in front of everyone in Bianjing. Zhuo Wenyuan warned Sang Qi that Yan Yunzhi, revered as one of the Four Young Masters of Bianjing and the Chancellor's secondary son, was exceptionally talented but known for rejecting advances.
Undeterred, Sang Qi seized the opportunity when Yan Yunzhi appeared, presenting him with her pouch. Yan Yunzhi, however, recognized her earlier comments about him in dialect. He sarcastically dismissed her offering as a "tip" and threw the pouch to a waiter, confirming that he did understand their dialect. Back at the Grand Commandant's residence, Sang Qi's father, Grand Commandant Sang, secured a royal decree for his daughter to study at the Imperial College.
This unprecedented move sparked outrage among the scholars, who demanded an additional entrance exam for Sang Qi, hoping she would withdraw. Deputy Chief Yan Yunzhi initially argued against rigid traditions, stating that if Sang Qi had academic potential, she shouldn't be discriminated against simply for being a woman. However, Scholar Feng insisted on the exam to prove her academic capability and to have a justified reason should His Majesty question their decision. Yan Yunzhi eventually conceded.
Sang Qi, finding the situation difficult, sought Zhuo Wenyuan's help. He provided her with crucial insights into the examiners: Scholar Feng, who was old-fashioned but had predictable exam questions, and Scholar Huo Cheng, a martial arts teacher close to the Sang family, who would likely test her horseback archery skills. It was during this discussion that Sang Qi realized Yan Yunzhi was the Deputy Chief, accusing him of being petty for making her take an exam after the pouch incident.
Despite the challenge, she declared her determination to enroll. With Zhuo Wenyuan's assistance, Sang Qi successfully passed her exam, securing her admission. On the first day of school, Sang Qi's arrival as the Imperial College's first female student caused a stir. Students, including Yan Yan, the Grand Preceptor's eldest son, expressed their displeasure, suggesting she was merely there to find a suitor.
Undeterred, Sang Qi confronted Yan Yunzhi again, presenting him with a pouch as a "student's gift," a formal gesture, not a romantic one. Yan Yunzhi, however, scorned the "insignificant trick," publicly tore up the pouch, and again refused the gift, complaining about her persistent and annoying attempts and denying any "past connections" as Sang Qi had claimed.
After this attempt failed, Sang Qi persisted in her efforts to get Yan Yunzhi to accept her pouch, but all were met with failure. To instill humility and responsibility in Sang Qi, Yan Yunzhi assigned her to Class Yellow, the lowest-ranked class, despite her family background and exam results being sufficient for Class Terre.
He explained to Zhuo Wenyuan that if Sang Qi, as the pioneering female student, could not set a strong example of humble reverence for learning, it would deter other women from ever daring to enter the Imperial College. Surprisingly, Zhuo Wenyuan, a top student from Class Sky, voluntarily transferred to Class Yellow to be Sang Qi's classmate.
When Yan Yunzhi questioned this decision, Zhuo Wenyuan cited Yan Yunzhi's own teaching that study should not be solely for glory, and then subtly probed Yan Yunzhi's seemingly harsh treatment of Sang Qi. Yan Yunzhi’s response revealed his true intentions for Sang Qi's placement: to set a precedent.
A flashback then showed Sang Yu, Sang Qi's late brother, asking Yan Yunzhi to look after Sang Qi should she ever return to Bianjing and enroll in the Imperial College, a promise Yan Yunzhi had made. Later, Sang Qi visited Yan Yunzhi's quarters, finding him in a peculiar state as he was testing a piece of white silk, related to investigating a suicide case for the Jingzhao Mansion.
Misinterpreting his actions, she rushed in, startling him and causing him to fall. Convinced he had attempted suicide, she quickly shared this sensational news with Zhuo Wenyuan. The rumor of Deputy Chief Yan Yunzhi attempting suicide then spread like wildfire throughout the Imperial College, reaching Yan Yunzhi himself, who was furious. He confronted Sang Qi, who braced herself for a reprimand, still convinced she had witnessed a suicide attempt.
Episode 2 Recap
After Yan Yunzhi calls Sang Qi to him to ask what it would take for her to stop bothering him, Sang Qi states that he only needs to accept her pouch. Yan Yunzhi agrees but emphasizes he will only give her this one chance. When Sang Qi reaches for her pouch, she discovers it is missing.
Yan Yunzhi seizes the opportunity to accuse her of simply trying to disrupt order, cutting her off when she tries to explain and declaring she has missed her chance. He then adopts a benevolent tone, promising not to pursue past rumors she had spread and urging her to focus on her studies. As Sang Qi departs, she immediately realizes the truth: Yan Yunzhi must have stolen the pouch himself.
She bursts back in to accuse him, but he feigns innocence and shoos her away. Pleased with himself, Yan Yunzhi summons his attendant, Bai Shi, and instructs him to secretly return the pouch to Sang Qi's desk. However, the confused Bai Shi mistakenly places the pouch in Yan Yan’s desk instead. Upon finding the pouch, Yan Yan assumes Sang Qi has a romantic interest in him.
He begins acting ambiguously towards her, much to Sang Qi's bewilderment, who believes Yan Yan simply resents her for being the only female student. Later, Yan Yan has Zhuo Wenyuan pass a note to Sang Qi, asking her to meet him alone at the school field after class. Interpreting this as a challenge due to Yan Yan's earlier hostile behavior, Sang Qi readily agrees. At the school field, Yan Yan fantasizes about a romantic encounter.
When Sang Qi arrives, she adopts a combative stance, ready to fight. Confused, Yan Yan suggests they are moving too quickly and should follow a more traditional courtship. Misunderstanding completely, Sang Qi punches him. Stunned, Yan Yan reveals the pouch, explaining he believed it was her declaration of affection. Sang Qi instantly recognizes it and realizes Yan Yunzhi's scheme. Mistaking her shock for passion, Yan Yan grandly announces he will consider their marriage.
Aghast, Sang Qi explains it was all a mistake and rushes off to confront Yan Yunzhi, leaving Yan Yan publicly humiliated and vowing revenge. Sang Qi corners Yan Yunzhi, accusing him of orchestrating the entire trick. Yan Yunzhi admits to his actions, justifying them as a lesson in self-preservation, citing the adage that "all's fair in war." He claims it was merely "teaching and educating." Sang Qi scoffs at his explanation, vowing to eventually make him pay for his arrogance.
Meanwhile, classmates gossip about Sang Qi’s audacity, and Yan Yan gathers his men, intending to seek revenge. Zhuo Wenyuan worries about the potential consequences, fearing Yan Yunzhi's vindictiveness more than Yan Yan's antics. When Yan Yan and his group arrive, Sang Qi and Zhuo Wenyuan flee, inadvertently running into Song Luotian’s faction. Quick-thinking, Sang Qi tricks Yan Yan by feigning an alliance with Song Luotian.
An enraged Yan Yan attacks Song Luotian, and their brawl brings them dangerously close to a pool. Sang Qi intends to kick both of them into the water, but someone grabs her arm, causing her to lose balance. Zhuo Wenyuan steadies her, and she promptly kicks both Yan Yan and Song Luotian into the pool. Just as Yan Yunzhi arrives to sternly reprimand the students, a panicked-acting Sang Qi deliberately pulls him into the pool with her, escalating the chaos.
Submerged in the water, Yan Yunzhi's anger is palpable. Once out of the pool, he furiously scolds the students. Later, Wei Zhan Hong of Class Xuan, feigning concern, offers to take Sang Qi to a side room to change her soaked clothes. Aware of his malicious intentions, Sang Qi plays along. As Wei Zhan Hong opens the door, Sang Qi spots a bucket of water poised on a beam and swiftly pushes him into the room, triggering the trap.
The other students who were following rush in, only to get drenched by their own prank. Sang Qi coolly warns them to leave her alone in the future. Back in his chambers, Yan Yunzhi receives ginger soup sent by Sang Qi but refuses to forgive her, harboring a desire for personal revenge. When Scholar Feng complains about Sang Qi bullying the Class Xuan students, Yan Yunzhi dismisses the matter as a minor student squabble.
Though his servant remarks on his magnanimity, Yan Yunzhi reiterates his intention to get his own retribution. During a law class, Yan Yunzhi announces a simulated crime investigation. Sang Qi is initially excited, but her enthusiasm wanes when she draws the role of "the deceased." As the investigation unfolds, Yan Yan suggests a ludicrous theory that the deceased committed suicide by jumping on a knife held upright by ice, causing a frustrated Yan Yunzhi to sigh.
Finally, Zhuo Wenyuan reveals the true solution: the victim was fatally wounded elsewhere before succumbing to his injuries in the room. Yan Yunzhi commends Zhuo Wenyuan, using the case to teach the importance of not being deceived by superficial appearances. After consistently drawing the role of "the deceased" in subsequent simulations, Sang Qi begins to question her decision to join the Imperial College.
She recalls her late brother, Sang Yu, describing his exceptional and kind classmate named "Xiao Bai," who he promised would protect her. Sang Qi wonders where this friend is now, musing aloud that Xiao Bai would surely teach Yan Yunzhi a lesson. Yan Yunzhi, having quietly approached, overhears her. Realizing Sang Qi is talking about him, he decides to conceal his identity to maintain his authority over her and curtly sends her to horseback archery class.
Later, during practice, Yan Yan volunteers to show off his skills, but his horse suddenly bolts. After Yan Yan is thrown, Sang Qi rushes to help. She manages to grab the reins but lacks the strength to control the panicked animal. Just as she is about to be thrown, Yan Yunzhi leaps onto the horse behind her and firmly reins it in. The close call leaves Sang Qi’s heart pounding as Yan Yunzhi reminds her that as his student, her safety is his responsibility.
Episode 3 Recap
After Sang Qi bravely intervened to save Yan Yan during a recent training exercise, she earned his immense respect. To express his gratitude, Yan Yan prepared a meal for her, though its arrangement initially looked more like a funeral offering. Realizing his mistake, Yan Yan rearranged the dishes, only for it to resemble an offering for ancestors even more. Thinking quickly, he then offered Sang Qi a pastry, an act that finally helped them clear up their past misunderstandings.
Meanwhile, Yan Yunzhi investigated a murder case at a private residence. He noted that the entire courtyard appeared to have been meticulously cleaned, leaving no immediate clues. However, his sharp eye spotted something unusual under a table: red powder. This powder was peculiar, and even the authorities could not identify its origin.
Yan Yunzhi observed that the victim's death closely mirrored that of Sang Yu, his late friend, and the family had mysteriously vanished, all of which raised his suspicions about a possible connection between the cases. He believed that finding the source of the poison would help solve everything.
The magistrate of Bianjing’s Capital Prefecture Office, acknowledging Yan Yunzhi's expertise in solving cases, assured him of full support in seeking justice for Sang Yu and specifically requested him to look after Sang Qi, as she was his late friend’s sister. Later that night, Yan Yunzhi pursued a black-clad figure who had covertly entered the residence. The chase led him into The Grand Commandant's Residence, where the figure vanished into the darkness.
During the pursuit, Yan Yunzhi inadvertently stumbled into Sang Qi's bathing room while she was taking a bath. Their startled cries drew the attention of the household staff. Mistaking the staff for those chasing Yan Yunzhi, Sang Qi quickly urged him to hide in the bathtub. Despite the chaotic situation, Yan Yunzhi remained clear-headed and quickly leaped out a window, narrowly avoiding an embarrassing scene.
During a music lesson, the scholar used a unique method to select students to play instruments. When it was Sang Qi’s turn, having no prior experience with musical instruments, her attempt produced a jarring, ear-splitting sound, causing other students and even the scholar to cringe. Only Yan Yan applauded enthusiastically. Recognizing her lack of musical talent, Sang Qi offered to sing a folk song as an apology. Initially, the students tightened their hands over their ears, fearing another harsh sound.
But as Sang Qi began to sing, her captivating voice made them involuntarily lower their hands, becoming fully engrossed in the beautiful melody. Sang Qi's singing reached Yan Yunzhi’s ears, evoking memories of his dear friend, Sang Yu. Drawn by the melody, he walked over to Sang Qi and began to play his zither, harmonizing with her voice. Their combined performance was exquisite, prompting cheers from the other students. Just as the song concluded, a sudden downpour began.
Zhuo Wenyuan promptly approached Sang Qi to shield her from the rain, but she paid him no mind, instead running into the rain to catch up with Yan Yunzhi. Sang Qi recognized her brother Sang Yu's distinct composition in Yan Yunzhi's zither playing. She confronted him about it, but Yan Yunzhi vehemently denied knowing the song or her brother, becoming flustered whenever Sang Yu was mentioned.
Sang Qi sensed he was hiding something crucial, but their conversation was cut short when Yan Yunzhi was called away by the scholar. Later, believing that the student rosters in the Imperial College's archive might hold information about her brother, Sang Qi went to investigate. The archive was spacious and well-organized. She found Sang Yu's name in the roster for Class Sky and noticed that Yan Yunzhi was listed as his classmate.
Just as she was about to examine it further, Yan Yunzhi entered. He asserted his authority as a teacher, reprimanding her for unauthorized entry and punishing her with a task to copy the Imperial College rules. Sang Qi reluctantly accepted but persisted in questioning him about his relationship with her brother. Yan Yunzhi steadfastly denied any close ties. Frustrated, Sang Qi left. Yan Yunzhi then noticed someone suspiciously leaving through the archive window.
After Sang Qi departed, he investigated and discovered that several pages had been torn from a book, which he believed was connected to the red powder found at the murder scene. He concluded that the person he sought was likely within the Imperial College. Sang Qi decided to learn cooking, hoping to impress Yan Yunzhi and win her bet with Song Jiayin.
However, her attempt to cook led to an unexpected discovery: the usually stern Yan Yunzhi was terrified of feathered chickens. Meanwhile, Song Luotian, worried that Sang Qi would win against his sister Song Jiayin, secretly poisoned the food Sang Qi prepared, intending to ruin her image in Yan Yunzhi's eyes. Unbeknownst to him, Sang Qi herself consumed the tainted meal, causing her to become delirious and embrace Yan Yunzhi.
As Sang Qi's movements became erratic and she slowly lost consciousness, Yan Yunzhi grew increasingly alarmed. To his surprise, Sang Qi then unexpectedly kissed him, causing the atmosphere to freeze in an intimate moment. Sang Qi was rushed back to The Grand Commandant's Residence, where she remained unconscious late into the night. Several renowned physicians in Bianjing were summoned but proved unable to rouse her, declaring themselves powerless against the severe poisoning.
Having already lost his close friend Sang Yu, Yan Yunzhi was desperate not to lose another person. He observed that Sang Qi's hallucinatory symptoms were unsettlingly similar to Sang Yu's two years prior. Ignoring the stormy weather, he intercepted Imperial Physician Wen on the road, urgently pleading for him to treat Sang Qi, knowing of his renowned skill in detoxification. Despite Imperial Physician Wen's initial protest about being "kidnapped," he agreed to help. Official Yan, who had also arrived at the residence, stated that the incident at the Imperial College demanded a thorough investigation.
Episode 4 Recap
Imperial Physician Wen was urgently sought out by Yan Yunzhi to treat Sang Qi, who had been gravely poisoned. Although displeased about being intercepted halfway on his journey home, Imperial Physician Wen, guided by his medical ethics, quickly began his examination. Both Yan Yunzhi and Zhuo Wenyuan were deeply anxious. Meanwhile, the real culprit, Qi Lang, was baffled, having only intended to administer a laxative, not something that would cause poisoning.
He confessed his involvement to his friend, Song, expressing fear of expulsion from the Imperial College, but Song advised him to remain calm and appease his father. After a long night, Imperial Physician Wen successfully detoxified Sang Qi, but she remained unconscious even as the sun rose high. Yan Yunzhi realized with alarm that Sang Qi's symptoms, especially the hallucinogenic aspect, mirrored those of Sang Yu's past poisoning.
This made him even more worried, and he disregarded his own lingering cold, insisting on staying to care for her. Sang Qi briefly regained consciousness before drifting back to sleep. Her maid, fetching warm water, asked Yan Yunzhi to watch over Sang Qi. After a moment of hesitation, he entered her bedchamber. In her haze, Sang Qi mistook Yan Yunzhi for her brother, Sang Yu, clinging to his hand and seeking comfort.
Yan Yunzhi, initially awkward, sat down as she softly called out "Brother." As her vision cleared, Sang Qi recognized him, abruptly pulling her hand away in shock. Yan Yunzhi then admitted he knew her brother, Sang Yu, and explained that the poison was likely intended for him due to past investigations where he'd offended some people. He also informed her that the poisoned meals were sealed in the Imperial College's cold storage.
Sang Qi resolved to help him investigate once she recovered. Soon after, Yan Yan, Sang Qi's close friend, arrived at The Grand Commandant's Residence with tonics. His boisterous entry caused a maid to spill a basin of water, leading to a brief, petty argument. Zhuo Wenyuan then arrived, and upon learning Yan Yunzhi was already with Sang Qi, quickly proceeded inside. Yan Yunzhi, feeling it inappropriate to linger, departed shortly after.
Back at his own residence, Yan Yunzhi found himself unusually distracted, his thoughts consumed by Sang Qi. He penned a letter describing the strange poisoning incidents and dispatched Bai Shi to deliver it to Miss Su Lan at Nanshan Manor. Meanwhile, Sang Qi's maid, Lian Pian, urged her to rest, emphasizing that her health was still fragile and that the Imperial College was closed for the New Year.
However, Sang Qi, concerned about Yan Yunzhi's safety and the ongoing investigation, secretly slipped away after her maid left to prepare food. She knew the college gates would be closed, but her determination to find the culprit fueled her actions. She managed to enter the cold storage, which, to her surprise, was unsealed. A sudden large hand seized her arm, pulling her out of sight just as guards entered for a routine check, failing to detect anyone.
Once the guards were gone, Yan Yunzhi, the one who had pulled her aside, and Sang Qi realized their extreme proximity, quickly pushing each other away. This motion accidentally toppled a storage shelf, scattering its contents. Among the spilled items, Sang Qi immediately spotted the bean sprouts she had made, confirming her suspicion. Yan Yunzhi, recognizing the significance, carefully collected a suspicious red powder found with them.
Their relief at finding the evidence was short-lived as they discovered the door was locked from the outside. Yan Yunzhi declared they would freeze to death if not rescued. Sang Qi attempted to bang on the door with a stick, but Yan Yunzhi pointed out that the louder crash of the fallen shelf had gone unnoticed. Sang Qi, accepting their predicament, somberly stated they should "do something meaningful" before they died.
Outside, Lian Pian was frantic over Sang Qi's disappearance, realizing her scholar uniform was gone. Zhuo Wenyuan arrived and quickly deduced Sang Qi had gone to the Imperial College to investigate, promising to bring her back safely. Inside the freezing cold storage, Sang Qi shivered uncontrollably. Yan Yunzhi, without hesitation, removed his outer coat and draped it over her.
Though weak, Sang Qi inquired if he liked fireworks, reminiscing about her brother, Sang Yu, and how fireworks warmed her, even in the coldest weather. Yan Yunzhi responded poetically about the beauty of fireworks. Sang Qi, noting his uncharacteristic care, asked why he was being so attentive. He simply replied it was a teacher's duty to care for his students. To cheer her, Yan Yunzhi promised to introduce her to "White" once they were free.
Still focused on her wager, Sang Qi asked him to accept her pouch if he truly cared for her. Yan Yunzhi, though initially dismissive, conceded he would "consider it" if they survived. He also reminded her that with the college closed, they wouldn't see each other again until the Lantern Festival, urging her to reflect on her studies.
Their ordeal ended when Bai Shi arrived, having been sent by Yan Yunzhi to provide backup if he didn't emerge within a set time. As they exited, Yan Yunzhi, carrying Sang Qi, explained why he had feigned anxiety earlier: it was a contingency plan to prepare her for the worst and keep her spirits up. Sang Qi, still coherent enough to recall his promise, pressed him about meeting "White," accusing him of lying.
Yan Yunzhi admitted he had fabricated the promise to motivate her. As they exited, they encountered Zhuo Wenyuan, who observed Yan Yunzhi carrying Sang Qi with a visible surge of anger and jealousy. Zhuo Wenyuan swiftly took Sang Qi from Yan Yunzhi, returned his outer coat, and escorted Sang Qi away.
He later received the red powder sample, learning it was a poison possibly originating from Xizhao, and noted its symptoms of eye swelling and spinal arching matched those of Sang Yu's previous poisoning. The city buzzed with excitement as New Year's Eve arrived. Sang Qi awoke from a dream where she had kissed Yan Yunzhi, feeling a rush of emotions. Her maid informed her it was New Year's Eve, and her father was at the palace.
Zhuo Wenyuan was waiting for her, having prepared a warm setting and food. Sang Qi confessed to him her feelings of loneliness in the bustling capital, reminiscing about her father's lively fireworks parties on the frontier. She also mentioned her upcoming guqin performance at the Lantern Festival. Unbeknownst to Sang Qi, it was Zhuo Wenyuan who was setting off a spectacular display of colorful fireworks.
His servant remarked on his unusual fondness for fireworks, to which Zhuo Wenyuan mused that the fireworks seemed to convey a message for him not to give up, and in an internal monologue, promised Sang Yu he would take good care of Sang Qi. Despite her recent ordeal, Sang Qi remained fixated on her wager.
She confided in her maid, Lian Pian, deciding to formally present her pouch to Yan Yunzhi at Chancellor Yan's Residence the next day, though she knew the chances of his acceptance were slim, and he was prone to breaking promises. Meanwhile, at a teahouse, Song Jiayin confidently boasted to Yin that Sang Qi would undoubtedly fail in her attempt to give the pouch to Yan Yunzhi.
Song Jiayin dismissed Sang Qi as an "imprudent girl" and Yan Yunzhi as her "future husband," belonging to Chancellor Yan's distinguished residence, thus implying he would never accept a pouch from Sang Qi. When Yin pointed out Zhuo Wenyuan's apparent affection for Sang Qi, Song Jiayin scorned him as an un-influential royal relative, merely coveting Grand Commandant Sang's status, and a "hopeless romantic" known for frequenting pleasure houses to seek out singers.
She then inquired about Miss Su Lan, who was soon returning to Bianjing after a three-year mourning period at Nanshan Manor. Yin, unfazed, declared herself Yan Yunzhi's destined partner but allowed that Miss Su, being learned and kind, might be considered as a concubine in the Yan household.
The next day, Sang Qi bravely went to Chancellor Yan's Residence, only to be informed by a servant that Yan Yunzhi was out, having gone to greet an old friend, and his return time was uncertain. Dejected, Sang Qi left. As she walked, a heavy rain began to fall. She expressed a peculiar wish for the rain to intensify, hoping it would deter her from having to perform at the Lantern Festival.
Zhuo Wenyuan found her in the downpour, expressing concern for her health and questioning her strange attire. Sang Qi admitted she wished to catch a cold to avoid her guqin performance, but Zhuo Wenyuan reassured her, promising he had plans to handle the situation for her.
Episode 5 Recap
The Lantern Festival brought a bustling atmosphere to the streets of Bianjing. Zhuo Wenyuan arrived at the gathering with Qian Jiu, a renowned entertainer, for a specific task, indicating he would reward her handsomely once it was completed. The day also marked the end of a bet between Sang Qi and Song Jiayin. Sang Qi, having seemingly lost, was obliged to attend dressed as an entertainer, much to her chagrin.
Song Jiayin, upon seeing Sang Qi in her entertainer costume, wasted no time in mocking her. Sang Qi, quick-witted, took a generous amount of makeup and smeared it on Song Jiayin's face, pretending to help her doll up to join the stage. In the ensuing commotion, Song Jiayin stumbled backward. Zhuo Wenyuan promptly stepped in, preventing her fall. Once Song Jiayin realized who had saved her, she recoiled, glaring at Zhuo Wenyuan.
He then revealed two other entertainers, coincidentally dressed exactly like Song Jiayin, much to her mortification. Humiliated, Song Jiayin quickly took off her outer garment and left, while Zhuo Wenyuan playfully called after her to wait for him on stage. Zhuo Wenyuan, noting that the Deputy Chief, Yan Yunzhi, seemed content to see Sang Qi embarrassed, had arranged for Qian Jiu, the finest entertainer in Bianjing, to secretly perform in Sang Qi's place.
However, Sang Qi firmly rejected the offer, stating that her family could afford to be embarrassed and that Qian Jiu's exceptional skills should not be used for such trickery. She announced that she had practiced the guqin all night and was ready to face the audience herself, albeit warning them to cover their ears. With a determined sigh, she walked onto the stage, preparing to begin the performance.
Sang Qi introduced herself as Sang Qi, the daughter of the Grand Commandant, newly arrived in Bianjing, and expressed her intention to open the Lantern Festival with "Po Zhen Zi," wishing for favorable weather and peace. However, her playing was truly dreadful, quickly filling Bianjing with cacophony. The audience erupted in jeers and complaints, with some shouting for her to leave the stage.
As Sang Qi continued to play, feeling utterly mortified, fireworks suddenly illuminated the sky, captivating everyone's attention and silencing the mockery. Yan Yunzhi, seemingly relieved, then gracefully ascended the stage. He suggested that since Sang Qi grew up by the frontier fortress and her musical skills might not meet expectations, she could instead sing a frontier folk song to entertain everyone. The crowd, eager for any amusement, cheered in agreement.
With Yan Yunzhi accompanying her on the guqin, Sang Qi’s singing gradually improved, impressing the entire gathering. The atmosphere became lively and harmonious. As the song concluded, Sang Qi watched Yan Yunzhi walk directly towards a beautiful woman, unable to keep pace with him. From Zhuo Wenyuan, Sang Qi learned that this striking woman was Su Jieyu, Yan Yunzhi’s destined fiancée. A strange pang of bitterness surged through Sang Qi, leaving her confused about its cause.
Shortly after, Yan San Lang from the Prefecture Court discovered suspicious individuals trying to poison food during the festival and gave chase. Sang Qi, not fully understanding the situation but driven by curiosity, also pursued them. In a narrow alley, she confronted one of the culprits but, due to the disparity in strength, she lost her balance and stumbled backward. Yan Yunzhi appeared just in time, catching her.
However, seeing Su Jieyu approach, he quickly released Sang Qi, appearing somewhat flustered. Su Jieyu introduced herself as Lan Ji among friends and expressed admiration for Sang Qi's singing, revealing her acquaintance with Sang Qi's elder brother, Sang Yu. Sang Qi, intrigued by Su Jieyu's connection with her brother, later asked Zhuo Wenyuan more about her.
Zhuo Wenyuan revealed that Su Jieyu was the daughter of Head of the Secretariat Chancellery Su Ting, and the Yan and Su families had been friendly for generations. Su Jieyu was renowned as Bianjing's foremost bluestocking, excelling in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting. Everyone in Bianjing knew that Yan Yunzhi and Su Jieyu were childhood sweethearts, and their return hinted at an impending marriage.
Soon after, Zhuo Wenyuan took Sang Qi away, while Yan Yunzhi entrusted Su Jieyu with analyzing some suspicious substances. Some days later, Sang Qi encountered Su Jieyu at a stationery shop. Su Jieyu, admiring Sang Qi's purchases and offering to cover the cost of her paper, cordially invited Sang Qi to a banquet hosted by her elder brother, Qing Xuan, at his residence, Jianshan Pavilion.
Sang Qi was excited by the invitation, especially upon learning that her brother, Sang Yu, and Yan Yunzhi often gathered there. Upon their arrival, they indeed found Yan Yunzhi present. Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi immediately fell into their usual playful bickering, discussing past events like a bet and a pouch. The atmosphere, though lively with Sang Qi's presence, took a melancholic turn as the group began reminiscing about their old friend, Sang Yu, and his virtuous character.
During their heartfelt conversation, a crane suddenly flew into the courtyard. Yan San Lang then recounted the story of Qing Xuan, who, to escape his family's insistence on marriage, had married his pet crane, enraging his father, Su Ting, and prompting the Emperor's amusing approval of the union. Sang Qi reacted strongly to the crane, which puzzled Yan San Lang, who questioned if the daughter of a Grand Commandant was afraid of birds.
Sang Qi, noticing Yan Yunzhi's discomfort, quickly explained that she was merely unfamiliar with such birds, having grown up on the frontier. The conversation then shifted to Sang Qi’s persistent inquiry about "White," a close friend mentioned in her brother's letters, described as gentle, adorable, and loyal. Yan Yunzhi, however, dismissively commented that "White" sounded more like a dog than a person, further fueling Sang Qi's suspicions about his identity.
As Sang Qi left Jianshan Pavilion, feeling a bit inebriated, she stumbled into her carriage, only to find Yan Yunzhi already seated inside. He offered her a bottle of sober-up medicine, which she initially eyed with suspicion. Yan Yunzhi leveraged this moment, reminding her that he had shielded her secret about having pteronophobia when the crane appeared earlier. He demanded that she honestly tell him what he wished to know in return.
Despite Sang Qi's attempts to feign drunkenness, Yan Yunzhi eventually admitted that he was indeed "White," her brother's dear friend. Sang Qi, elated by the revelation, clung to him, playfully accusing him of being "Black" due to his strictness, a stark contrast to her brother's description of "White" as gentle and humble. She also playfully complained that her brother had told White to let her slack off, but Yan Yunzhi had only ever disciplined her.
Episode 6 Recap
During a meal, Sang Qi excitedly recounted her adventures at the Lantern Festival, including meeting Lan Ji, Qing Xuan, and Deputy Chief Yan Yunzhi. She remarked on the fascinating people of Bianjing. Zhuo Wenyuan, with a hint of sarcasm, noted Sang Qi’s enthusiasm for Yan Yunzhi’s friends compared to his own. He then offered to introduce her to Qian Jiu, a woman he claimed was even more renowned for her beauty in Bianjing than Su Jieyu.
Sang Qi, curious, asked about Zhuo Wenyuan's relationship with Qian Jiu, to which he replied that he merely wanted to show her the interesting people in his own circle. The next day, Zhuo Wenyuan brought Sang Qi to Qian Jiu's residence, named "In This Mountain," located in a serene bamboo grove. Zhuo Wenyuan explained to Qian Jiu that Sang Qi had spent a long time in a frontier military camp and was unaccustomed to the beauties of Bianjing.
Upon entering, Sang Qi immediately noticed an indescribable delicate fragrance emanating from Qian Jiu. Inside, Qian Jiu shared her beauty secrets, demonstrating how to infuse clothes with lasting fragrance and apply rouge with a subtle, natural effect. During their discussion of beauty secrets, Sang Qi expressed her appreciation for all types of beauty, emphasizing that sincerity and purity were what truly impressed her.
It was at this time that Sang Qi inadvertently spotted a distinctive carved pattern on the back of Qian Jiu's neck, a sight that filled her with doubt as it seemed vaguely familiar. Qian Jiu, in turn, praised Sang Qi as the most extraordinary person in Bianjing. When Qian Jiu slyly hinted at Zhuo Wenyuan’s deep affection for Sang Qi, Sang Qi quickly clarified that she and Zhuo Wenyuan shared a bond of "brothers."
Qian Jiu then offered to fetch a new face powder for Sang Qi. As night fell, Sang Qi urged Zhuo Wenyuan to leave, but Qian Jiu suddenly invited Zhuo Wenyuan to stay for tea. A guard then informed Sang Qi that a carter would take her home, leaving Zhuo Wenyuan behind. On her journey through the bamboo grove, Sang Qi dozed off, only to be jolted awake by a sudden scream.
Outside the carriage, she found herself surrounded by several black-clad assailants. In the struggle, Sang Qi recognized the same carved pattern she had seen on Qian Jiu's neck etched on the attackers' shoulders. Just as danger loomed, an elder wielding a wine flask descended swiftly, expertly driving off the attackers with agile and powerful moves.
Sang Qi attempted to ask for his name, but the elder, merely identifying himself as a passer-by, cautioned her to be careful on her journey home before departing as quickly as he arrived. Sang Qi marveled, realizing she had witnessed a "divine descent" like those described in storytelling scripts. Back at the Grand Commandant's Residence, Master Sang paced anxiously, worried about Sang Qi’s late return, especially after recent unrest at the Lantern Festival.
Lian Pian explained that Zhuo Wenyuan had accompanied Sang Qi, which Master Sang found somewhat reassuring given Zhuo Wenyuan's usual discretion. Master Sang acknowledged Zhuo Wenyuan's feelings for Sang Qi but knew his daughter viewed him only as a brother. Just then, Sang Qi returned, disheveled and injured. Master Sang's worry turned to alarm; he immediately called for a physician and fetched his own wound medicine, fussing over his daughter.
Since Sang Yu's passing, Sang Qi was Master Sang’s only remaining child, intensifying his protective instincts. Sang Qi apologized for causing worry and explained that Zhuo Wenyuan couldn’t leave, so he sent her back, leading to the ambush. She revealed that she hadn't seen the attackers' faces but recognized the distinct pattern on their shoulders. Master Sang, furious, immediately reported the incident to the Prefecture Court and ordered his family’s soldiers to launch their own investigation.
Later, while recovering, Sang Qi pondered the incident and the mysterious pattern, realizing with a jolt that the same design was on Qian Jiu's neck. The next morning, Yan Yan arrived at the residence to visit Sang Qi, but Lian Pian barred him from entering Sang Qi’s room, assuring him that Sang Qi only had a minor skin injury and was resting.
Yan Yan, despite being the Grand Preceptor's son, was dismissed by Lian Pian as a "fool" but his gifts were accepted. Shortly after, Yan Yunzhi arrived. Sang Qi, instantly flustered and suspecting his visit would bring trouble, rushed to get ready. Yan Yunzhi presented her with study exercises, noting her leg injury shouldn't prevent her from studying. He also informed her that the Prefecture Court was investigating and Yan San Lang (himself) would question her once she recovered.
Sang Qi dismissed her injury as minor, eager to discuss the expert who saved her. She launched into a dramatic re-enactment of the ambush, describing the expert’s swift and powerful moves. Yan Yunzhi, while initially skeptical of her theatrical account, grew serious, warning her that the assailant's weapon might have been poisoned and emphasizing that the attack was indeed a brutal attempt on her life.
He then added that despite her mischievous nature and academic shortcomings, which had disappointed her late brother Sang Yu, she had been fortunate to escape quickly. Sang Qi explained that she had visited Qian Jiu with Zhuo Wenyuan before the ambush. Yan Yunzhi questioned her choice of visiting an "entertainer" late at night.
Sang Qi defended her visit as a quest for understanding beauty, explaining her observations on the diverse forms of beauty among women like Su Jieyu, Qian Jiu's elegance, and even Song Jiayin's spirited arrogance. Yan Yunzhi, in a rare moment, praised Sang Qi for her unique, lively, and free-spirited nature, though he also playfully called her "the most troublesome student."
Then, Sang Qi hesitantly revealed the crucial detail: she had seen the same pattern on the assailant’s shoulder and on Qian Jiu’s neck. Yan Yunzhi immediately grasped the significance of this. He informed her that this carved pattern was the unique symbol of the Xizhao organization, identifying its members as traitors, black market traders, or assassins—all dangerous, stateless individuals.
He explained that while the court had pursued Xizhao members years ago, their leader remained elusive, and the organization seemed to be re-emerging. Yan Yunzhi assured Sang Qi that he would investigate this matter, including Zhuo Wenyuan, who was also his student. He then warned her not to discuss the incident with anyone else. Concerned for Sang Qi's safety, Yan Yunzhi instructed Bai Shi to act as her bodyguard, ensuring her protection to and from school.
Even at the Imperial College, Yan Yunzhi kept a vigilant eye on Sang Qi from outside her classroom window. Sang Qi, however, felt suffocated by this constant supervision, complaining to her friends that Yan Yunzhi's restrictions prevented her from enjoying storytelling scripts or dining out. Back home, Master Sang, still deeply worried about the Xizhao threat and his daughter's second injury, imposed a strict curfew, forbidding Sang Qi from leaving the residence.
He warned all servants, especially Lian Pian, against helping Sang Qi sneak out, threatening to send Lian Pian back to her hometown. Sang Qi, feeling like a caged bird, chafed under the restrictions. Lian Pian explained Master Sang's deep love and worry. Sang Qi, unwilling to be a constant source of anxiety for her father, resolved to find the elder who had saved her and learn martial arts.
That night, she stealthily slipped out to the bamboo grove, hoping to find her mysterious savior. To her astonishment, she found Yan Yunzhi there instead, dressed in white. She mistakenly bowed to him, calling him "Expert" and asking to be his disciple.
Yan Yunzhi, amused, reminded her that he was her Deputy Chief and urged her to return home, informing her that there was no one else living on the mountain and the expert she sought was likely just a passerby. Despite his words, Sang Qi persisted in her desire to learn martial arts from him.
Episode 7 Recap
After a sparring session with Yan Yunzhi, Sang Qi realized she was no match for him. Her father's combat moves were ill-suited for self-defense, leading her to sneak out in search of her mysterious benefactor. She failed to find him, but coincidentally encountered Yan Yunzhi. As the bamboo forest appeared ominous under the moonlight, a nervous Sang Qi asked Yan Yunzhi to escort her home.
Yan Yunzhi muttered to himself that he had always protected her in secret, yet she was only now openly seeking his protection. Sang Qi seemed to catch his words and looked at him quizzically, but Yan Yunzhi quickly denied it. Sang Qi then lightened the mood by comically imitating Scholar Feng, whose perpetually grim expression made her think of a bitter gourd. Yan Yunzhi was secretly amused by her antics, though he maintained his stern demeanor.
Upon reaching The Grand Commandant's Residence, Sang Qi hesitated to knock, knowing her father would be furious if he discovered she had snuck out. She requested Yan Yunzhi's help to scale the wall. Though reluctant to engage in such a "sneaky thing," Yan Yunzhi embraced her waist, effortlessly lifting them over the high wall.
As soon as they landed, Sang Qi began to criticize his martial arts, claiming he was not as impressive as the masters in her storytelling scripts who "flew up in an instant." Annoyed by her ingratitude, Yan Yunzhi promptly lifted her again and deposited her back outside the wall, leaving her to face the daunting task of re-entry alone.
Later, Bai Shi remarked to Yan Yunzhi that he had never seen his Young Master care so deeply for a woman, not even for Lan. Yan Yunzhi dismissed his observations, claiming Sang Qi was merely his old friend's sister. One day after school, Sang Qi found herself craving tasty dishes at a local eatery but worried about running into Yan Yunzhi.
Conveniently, she spotted Lan and used the opportunity to invite her to dinner, presenting it as a way to repay a previous favor. During their meal, Sang Qi expressed curiosity about Yan Yunzhi's cold and distant nature. Lan explained that Yan Yunzhi had been mature and aloof since she could remember. She added that despite his outwardly cold demeanor, he was a caring and considerate person who would secretly rectify others' mistakes without ever taking credit.
Sang Qi found this description perplexing, wondering if they were even talking about the same person, joking that perhaps Yan Yunzhi only dared to act like a tyrant at the Imperial College. Unbeknownst to them, Yan Yunzhi was seated in an adjacent room and nearly choked on his drink upon hearing Sang Qi's colorful remarks. As the conversation turned to matters of the heart, Lan asked Sang Qi about the gentlemen often seen by her side.
Sang Qi, amused, likened Yan Yan to a tough, chewy tendon, exhausting to eat and liable to cause a headache. She compared Zhuo Wenyuan to a crispy, smooth roast chicken, a fine dish, but one she had grown tired of after consuming it frequently since childhood in the frontier. When asked about Yan Yunzhi, Sang Qi described him as a sugar lotus root—sweet only on the outside, but cloying after a while.
Unaware that Yan Yunzhi was within earshot, she stated confidently that no one else would ever know her true opinions. However, as she left the restaurant, she immediately ran into Yan Yunzhi, confirming his presence in the next room. Mortified, she made a hasty retreat. After Sang Qi fled, Yan Yunzhi instructed Bai Shi to send a plate of sweet lotus roots to her residence, a subtle jab at her earlier comparison.
Yan Yunzhi then confronted Lan, clarifying that there was no engagement between them and urging her not to waste her time on him or involve others, specifically Sang Qi. Lan feigned innocence, claiming her meeting with Sang Qi was a coincidence, but Yan Yunzhi saw through her facade, aware of her deliberate actions. Lan then admitted her long-standing affection for him, recounting how she had retreated three years prior, hoping he would miss her.
She then directly confronted Yan Yunzhi about his feelings for Sang Qi, pointing out that his actions—making exceptions for Sang Qi, overcoming his aversion to public appearances to save her from embarrassment, and engaging in banter with her—far exceeded the boundaries of a simple teacher-student relationship or mere care for a friend's sister.
Yan Yunzhi, despite her insightful observations, continued to deny any romantic feelings, describing Sang Qi as a "strange, naughty, and mischievous" woman who was always causing trouble and defied discipline. Nevertheless, Bai Shi confidently asserted that Yan Yunzhi had indeed fallen for Sang Qi, a realization that Yan Yunzhi vehemently, if unconvincingly, refuted.
Determined to find her benefactor, Sang Qi sought out Yan Yan, who suggested that the top floor of Qingfeng Restaurant, known for its diverse patrons and abundant information, might hold clues. There, Sang Qi unexpectedly encountered Qian Jiu. Sang Qi discreetly checked Qian Jiu's neck for a "carving tattoo," hoping it would match a detail she remembered from her benefactor, but found no such mark.
Qian Jiu then led them to a private room where Zhuo Wenyuan and Yan Yunzhi were already seated. Sang Qi, assuming Qian Jiu was Zhuo Wenyuan's mistress, lightheartedly admonished Yan Yunzhi for being in such a place and "stealing" Zhuo Wenyuan's affections. Qian Jiu quickly clarified her professional relationship with Zhuo Wenyuan, asserting her independence.
Sang Qi then attempted to describe her elusive benefactor to the group as a "ghostly, highly skilled, white-robed old man" who always appeared in her moments of greatest need. Realizing her description was too vague, she requested writing materials and proceeded to create a detailed portrait of the mysterious figure. However, upon seeing her drawing, Yan Yunzhi, Zhuo Wenyuan, and especially Yan Yan, erupted in laughter. Yan Yunzhi, embarrassed by Sang Qi's artistic skills, attempted to make a hasty exit.
As they prepared to leave, Sang Qi asked Qian Jiu if she had ever seen anyone matching the drawing, specifically pointing to a small knife in the picture. Yan Yunzhi then advised Sang Qi that instead of visiting such places, she should consult Scholar Feng, whom he jokingly referred to as the most resourceful person at the Imperial College.
Yan Yunzhi then arranged for Yan Yan to escort his sister, Lian Pian, home, creating an opportunity for him to walk Sang Qi back. Later, Yan Yunzhi looked at Sang Qi's drawing of her benefactor and told Bai Shi that if his guess about the person depicted was correct, it would be difficult to deal with, but also a great blessing for Sang Qi.
Bai Shi, observing Yan Yunzhi's subtle affection, concluded that his Young Master's love for Sang Qi was one-sided, as she remained oblivious to his many efforts. Yan Yunzhi admitted he didn't seek anything in return but expressed concern about Qian Jiu, suggesting she was either a highly skilled and cunning individual or truly a commoner, necessitating further investigation due to the potential risk to Sang Qi.
He also noted that Zhuo Wenyuan, despite being deeply in love with Sang Qi, openly frequented brothels in her presence. Yan Yunzhi declared that their top priority was to ensure Sang Qi's safety by finding a suitable place to settle her, while secretly enhancing her martial arts skills so she could protect herself in the future.
Episode 8 Recap
"""[Recap]""" The southern salt route has encountered significant issues, preventing goods organized by Xizhao from entering, and the route is continuously monitored by patrolling guards. Qian Jiu suspects that Noble Consort Zhuo's arrangements were not meticulous enough. With an increasing number of complaints lodged against them, the authorities have gradually become aware of the private salt smuggling via sea routes.
Zhuo Wenyuan believes it is time to temporarily lay low and is also contacting land routes, hoping to establish connections with local merchants and diversify their transport lines to mitigate losses. Qian Jiu expresses concern about the reliability of these local merchants, but Zhuo Wenyuan assures her that people are always drawn by profit, and as long as one is willing to share, allies will emerge.
Qian Jiu acknowledges that salt smuggling is foundational to the Zhuo family's wealth and trusts Zhuo Wenyuan's judgment, urging him to quickly manage the new shipment. Zhuo Wenyuan explains he will delegate this to a trusted follower as he cannot leave Bianjing, admitting that his preoccupation stems from concerns for Sang Qi, whom Yan Yunzhi's men are constantly protecting. He notes Sang Qi's naive understanding of love and fears unforeseen complications if he doesn't personally oversee her.
Qian Jiu observes his unusual, worried demeanor, but Zhuo Wenyuan insists his actions are for the greater good, as the Sang family's future cooperation is integral to their plans, also reminding Qian Jiu of his promises to Xizhao. Furthermore, Zhuo Wenyuan knows that Qian Jiu was responsible for the assassination attempt on Sang Qi at the villa. If the plan fails, she can hide her identity, and Sang Qi will trust her even more, but she cannot hurt Sang Qi.
Yan Yunzhi, intending to investigate Qian Jiu at Qingfeng Restaurant, unexpectedly encounters Zhuo Wenyuan there. Qian Jiu seizes the opportunity to fetch her pipa to entertain them. As she moves, Yan Yunzhi subtly flicks a coin towards her. Though trained in martial arts and instinctively aware of potential dangers, Qian Jiu skillfully suppresses any outward reaction. The coin merely brushes her hair, and she calmly smooths it back, betraying no sign of disturbance.
Meanwhile, Yan Yan tells Sang Gong and Sang Qi that he has found the "white-robed old man" she sought. Sang Gong, overhearing Yan Yan mention the old man is still single, mistakenly believes Yan Yan is arranging a marriage for Sang Qi with a sixty-year-old man. Enraged, he chastises Yan Yan for misleading his precious daughter. Sang Qi quickly clarifies that the person in question is her savior, not a suitor.
Upon hearing this, Sang Gong's anger dissipates, his expression softens, and he praises Yan Yan as a good child, instructing his treasurer to prepare a generous amount of gifts to satisfy her benefactor. Following the map, Sang Qi and Yan Yan journey to Lingwu Mountain.
As they near their destination, Sang Qi expresses suspicion about the map's extraordinary clarity, noting that it meticulously details the most convenient route from Bianjing to Lingwu Mountain and even precisely marks the small house, as if to ensure they could not miss it. She finds it odd for an elusive master to be so conspicuously located. Yan Yan admits he obtained the map from a man at Qingfeng Restaurant.
Fearing a potential trap, Sang Qi instructs their accompanying family members to wait, deciding to scout ahead with Yan Yan. Upon entering, Sang Qi announces their presence, seeking her white-robed benefactor. They are invited in, and to Sang Qi's astonishment, not only do they find the white-robed master, Yan He Xing, but also Yan Yunzhi.
Sang Qi expresses surprise at Yan Yunzhi's presence during his holiday and disappointment that he did not inform her of his relationship with Yan He Xing, his second uncle, earlier. Yan Yunzhi playfully retorts that she never asked him directly, despite his attempts to offer help back at Qingfeng Restaurant. Sang Qi, delighted by the unexpected revelation, is eager to have Yan He Xing accept both her and Yan Yan as disciples.
She attempts to perform a traditional bow, emphasizing that seniority does not matter, only that they learn from him. However, Yan He Xing stops her, stating his aversion to taking disciples, citing the trouble and noise they bring. Sang Qi portrays herself as a humble, untalented, and low-profile individual who would never bring him fame or trouble, thus fitting his image as an elusive master.
Yan He Xing, however, sees through their facade, exposing Sang Qi as the Grand Commandant's daughter, raised in the frontier, and the Imperial College's first female student, while identifying Yan Yan as the Grand Preceptor's notorious son. He tells Yan Yunzhi to manage his own students, permitting them to stay for a few days but firmly refusing to take any disciples.
In a flashback to three days prior, Yan Yunzhi had already sought out Yan He Xing to persuade him to take Sang Qi as a disciple. Yan He Xing, however, was adamant in his refusal. He cynically notes Yan Yunzhi's past obsession with Sang Yu and his current unease regarding Sang Qi, teasing him for his persistent focus on the Sang family.
Yan Yunzhi declares his sole aim is for Sang Qi to acquire martial arts skills for her own self-preservation. Despite his initial reluctance, Yan He Xing, swayed by his nephew's unwavering determination, finally concedes to test Sang Qi. Back in the present, Yan Yunzhi informs Sang Qi and Yan Yan that Yan He Xing will test their sincerity and tasks them with retrieving a jar of his personally brewed mountain wine before nightfall.
Soon after setting off, Yan Yan steps into a hidden trap in the bamboo forest, twisting his ankle. Sang Qi leaves Lian Pian to stay with Yan Yan and continues the wine retrieval with Yan Yunzhi. As Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi enter the wine cellar, white feathers suddenly cascade from above, surrounding Yan Yunzhi.
Recognizing his acute fear, Sang Qi quickly takes charge, jumping onto his back to shield his eyes and directing him forward to navigate through the space, successfully retrieving the wine. Back at the house, Yan Yunzhi angrily confronts his second uncle about the goose feathers, realizing he was deliberately targeted. Having successfully completed the wine retrieval, Yan Yunzhi presses Yan He Xing about taking disciples. Yan He Xing agrees to break his rule but dismisses Yan Yunzhi briefly.
He explains to Sang Qi and Yan Yan that due to his limited energy, he can only accept one disciple, but the other may remain as a "miscellaneous errand runner," still able to observe and learn from his teachings. Both agree to these terms. Yan He Xing then presents the final challenge: they must retrieve Yan Yunzhi's personal middle garment. Sang Qi is hesitant, acknowledging the impropriety for a woman to obtain a man's intimate clothing.
However, seeing Yan Yan's immediate and confident acceptance of the challenge, her competitive spirit is ignited, and she resolves to secure the garment. During dinner, Sang Qi attempts her strategy. She "accidentally" spills wine on Yan Yunzhi's clothes, then apologizes profusely and offers to help him bathe and wash his soiled garments. Yan Yunzhi agrees to bathe but politely declines her offer to wash his clothes, then attempts to stay in the bathing area.
Yan Yunzhi, realizing her intent and finding it inappropriate for her to remain, repeatedly tells her to leave. After she finally retreats, he later confronts her, seeing through her scheme, and reveals that Yan Yan has already outsmarted her. Moments later, Yan Yan appears triumphantly, holding Yan Yunzhi's middle garment, claiming he obtained it fairly. He reminds Sang Qi that she has lost.
Yan He Xing then declares Yan Yan his official disciple, warning Sang Qi not to bully his new student and giving her a choice: accept the role of a miscellaneous errand runner or leave.
Episode 9 Recap
The following morning, Sang Qi's room was found empty and her luggage gone. Yan He Xing, seeing her departure, remarked that his new female disciple was nothing special, but Yan Yunzhi confidently asserted that she would return, having "suffered" enough to know. He then directed Yan Yan to begin his training. Meanwhile, Sang Qi arrived back at her family home, where her father initially chided her for leaving.
She claimed she had left a note and explained she had gone to Lingwu Mountain to learn martial arts for self-defense, distinct from the Sang family's military and spear techniques. Her father recognized Yan He Xing, who he said had "mooched off so much wine" from him, but admitted Yan He Xing was formidable enough to exchange "over a hundred moves" with him. He warned Sang Qi to report if Yan He Xing bullied her.
Lian Pian attempted to voice Sang Qi's recent hardships, but Sang Qi quickly interjected, painting a picture of an overly comfortable life on the mountain, claiming Yan Yunzhi massaged her shoulders and Yan Yan ran errands for her. Just then, Zhuo Wenyuan arrived. He immediately cast doubt on Sang Qi's fabricated tales, especially the part about Yan Yunzhi serving her.
Sang Qi quickly explained she had returned to gather personal necessities, asserting that Yan Yan was unsuitable for retrieving "women's items." Zhuo Wenyuan revealed he had initially come to bid farewell before a trip to the south but had decided to accompany her to Lingwu Mountain instead. Sang Qi, however, insisted he stay behind with her father.
Later, Sang Qi explained to Lian Pian that despite her initial reluctance to endure hardships, she was now determined to learn true martial arts from Yan He Xing, having witnessed his impressive skill first-hand when he seized her in just a few moves, exposing a significant gap in her own abilities. She resolved that if Yan He Xing intentionally made things difficult, she would find a way to get back at him.
That night, Sang Qi and Lian Pian secretly set off for Lingwu Mountain, burdened with heavy luggage. Sang Qi explained that she could not bear for her father to discover she had failed to become a disciple and was instead reduced to a servant. As they ascended the dark, quiet mountain, Lian Pian grew exhausted. Sang Qi suggested a rest, and it was then that Zhuo Wenyuan and his attendant, Jing Mu, appeared.
Zhuo Wenyuan stated he had been following them out of concern for Sang Qi's safety while traveling alone at night, though his real worry was Yan Yunzhi. He offered to carry her items, but Sang Qi refused, urging him to return home. She confided in Lian Pian that she feared Zhuo Wenyuan would see her serving as a servant and report it to her father, potentially leading to chaos and disrupting her chance to learn martial arts.
Zhuo Wenyuan, however, insisted on staying. Upon their arrival at Lingwu Mountain's residence, Yan Yan rushed out, lamenting that his current routine was "asking for his life" rather than actual training, and embraced Zhuo Wenyuan as if clinging to a lifeline. Yan He Xing immediately ordered Sang Qi to begin her duties, shattering her earlier pretense of a comfortable life.
Sang Qi tried to explain to Zhuo Wenyuan that her situation was merely a "small accident," claiming Yan He Xing only accepted one disciple and had made her duel Yan Yan, implying it was a test of her sincerity. Yan Yunzhi then confronted Sang Qi, expressing his displeasure about her bringing Zhuo Wenyuan to Lingwu Mountain, reminding her that Yan He Xing had already made an exception by allowing her and Yan Yan to stay.
Sang Qi tried to explain that Zhuo Wenyuan would not be staying long, but Yan He Xing called her away for work. Left alone, Yan Yunzhi and Zhuo Wenyuan engaged in a tense exchange, with Yan Yunzhi subtly prodding Zhuo Wenyuan to leave and suggesting he was wasting his holiday.
Zhuo Wenyuan retorted by hinting that Yan Yunzhi had "tricked" Sang Qi into coming to the mountain and expressed his firm intent to stay, their seemingly polite words belying a sharp rivalry. Zhuo Wenyuan openly declared his intention to remain on the mountain, offering to be Sang Qi's "errand boy" as she served Yan He Xing. Sang Qi was surprised by this.
Yan Yunzhi, seeing Sang Qi burdened with tasks, advised her that her constant effort would only spoil Yan He Xing and lead to more frequent demands, preventing her from learning martial arts. Sang Qi acknowledged this dilemma, but lacked a solution. Yan Yunzhi then revealed Yan He Xing's two main weaknesses: fine wine and delicious food. He suggested that by mastering his appetite, Sang Qi could gain control over him.
To appease Yan He Xing, Zhuo Wenyuan presented a rare "Tumixiang liquor" from Xijing. Yan He Xing, pleased with the wine, grudgingly allowed Zhuo Wenyuan to stay, though he reiterated he was not accepting any new disciples. Zhuo Wenyuan clarified that his sole purpose for staying was to care for Sang Qi, not to learn martial arts. Taking Yan Yunzhi's advice, Sang Qi volunteered to prepare a meal. Both Yan Yunzhi and Zhuo Wenyuan immediately offered to assist.
Zhuo Wenyuan quickly led Sang Qi into the kitchen, pulling her away from Yan Yunzhi, while Yan Yunzhi followed, a hint of jealousy on his face, claiming he was there to supervise and prevent any kitchen mishaps. Sang Qi, recognizing their inexperience, sarcastically asked if they had ever set foot in a kitchen.
Despite their lack of practical skills, both men insisted on helping with tasks like chopping vegetables and preparing ingredients, with Zhuo Wenyuan even suggesting catching a chicken for roasted chicken and Yan Yunzhi proposing sugar lotus root. Lian Pian attempted to defend their good intentions, but Sang Qi, exasperated by their incompetence, deemed them "troublemakers" and instructed Lian Pian to escort them out of the kitchen.
At dinner, Yan He Xing enthusiastically praised Sang Qi's cooking, finding the dishes tender, flavorful, rich, and aromatic. Capitalizing on his satisfaction, Sang Qi proposed a deal: she would prepare all of his daily meals if he would excuse her from chores and teach her martial arts. Yan He Xing, admitting he had been waiting for her to make such an offer, readily agreed and formally accepted her as his disciple, dismissing traditional rituals.
Yan Yan excitedly welcomed Sang Qi as his martial sister. Yan He Xing then confessed that he had intended to take Sang Qi as a disciple all along, making her do chores merely to test her sincerity. He promised to personally teach her the "Yan Sword Technique" starting the next day, and also requested wild mushroom soup for her next meal. The following day, Yan He Xing demonstrated the Yan Sword Technique.
Sang Qi memorized the movements but struggled to grasp the "essence." Yan He Xing, busy with Yan Yan, told her to practice the form until she understood what she didn't know, and then to ask him. As Sang Qi practiced, Yan Yunzhi approached. She sought his guidance, explaining that the sword technique was abstract and difficult to comprehend, citing "Clear Mist Dividing Water" as an example. Yan Yunzhi took her hand, guiding her through the intricate movements, bringing them close.
Later, Yan Yunzhi approached Zhuo Wenyuan, initiating a discussion about Zhuo Wenyuan's departure. Zhuo Wenyuan, however, revealed he would be staying indefinitely, claiming he and Yan He Xing had formed a good bond. Yan Yunzhi warned him not to disrupt Sang Qi's training, but Zhuo Wenyuan brushed it off, stating he had his own plans, which included accompanying Sang Qi to pick wild mushrooms.
Jing Mu reminded Zhuo Wenyuan about his urgent trip to the south, but Zhuo Wenyuan dismissed the concern, assuring him it would not interfere. Zhuo Wenyuan then found a secluded cave, which triggered a flood of memories. He recalled meeting Sang Qi in a similar cave during their childhood, a time when he felt like a "downtrodden boy" no one wanted.
He remembered Sang Qi comforting him and promising to "save" him if no one else would, sealing it with a pinky promise. Believing a heavy rain was imminent, Zhuo Wenyuan instructed Jing Mu to subtly lure Sang Qi to the cave that evening, ensuring Yan Yan, Lian Pian, and any of the Yan family were unaware. Jing Mu expressed concern about the rain, but Zhuo Wenyuan chillingly replied he wouldn't have chosen that location if it wasn't going to rain.
Meanwhile, Sang Qi had made remarkable progress in learning the sword technique. She credited Yan Yunzhi for her rapid improvement. Yan Yunzhi then confessed that he had initially wanted to teach her directly but realized she needed to choose to seek him out and determine for herself who should teach her.
He also subtly revealed his motive was to ensure she could defend herself against the "men in black" who had attacked her, and so his "silly nephew," Yan Yan, would not have to constantly protect her covertly. Sang Qi, realizing Yan Yunzhi had been secretly protecting her, pressed him for details.
Yan Yunzhi's attendant, Bai Shi, then accidentally let slip that Yan Yunzhi had cured her poison, braved a rainy night to find an imperial physician for her, and even manipulated her entrance exam results for the Imperial College. Just then, Jing Mu approached Sang Qi, claiming Zhuo Wenyuan had discovered a vast field of wild mushrooms behind the mountain and wanted her to see them before the impending rain. Sang Qi agreed, despite her urgency to speak with Yan Yunzhi.
Upon arriving at the cave, Sang Qi asked about the mushrooms, seeing none. Zhuo Wenyuan remarked on the darkening sky and the coming rain, suggesting they hide in the cave and reminisce about their childhood. Sang Qi, however, was reluctant to relive such a "bad experience." Zhuo Wenyuan insisted the original incident was not "unfortunate" for him. As the heavy rain began to fall and the cave started to collapse, Yan Yunzhi suddenly appeared, pulling Sang Qi into his embrace as they tumbled into the crumbling cave.
Episode 10 Recap
As a rockslide began to fall towards Sang Qi, Yan Yunzhi swiftly moved forward, embracing her and falling with the momentum into the cave. The falling rocks sealed the cave entrance, trapping them inside and separating them from Zhuo Wenyuan. Sang Qi noticed Yan Yunzhi's arm was bleeding profusely and quickly tore his outer garment to bandage his wound, despite his protests about its value.
Seeing some dry branches, Sang Qi gathered kindling and used her clothes to ignite a fire for warmth. Yan Yunzhi sighed, lamenting that the fire would soon die out, while her clothes could have provided warmth for much longer, making her action foolish and wasteful. As night deepened, the rain-soaked cave grew colder. When the fire began to dwindle, Sang Qi curled up, visibly uncomfortable.
Unable to bear it, Yan Yunzhi called her over to share his outer layer for warmth. Without hesitation, Sang Qi sat close to him, burying herself in his garment. Under the tranquil moonlight in the mountains, Sang Qi leaned against Yan Yunzhi's arm and drifted to sleep. Meanwhile, Zhuo Wenyuan rushed back to the manor to inform Yan He Xing of the predicament. Upon learning that Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi were trapped in the cave, Yan He Xing chuckled.
He feigned a search for tools, intentionally misdirecting Zhuo Wenyuan to the backyard to look for a pickaxe instead of the one readily available in his own room. He privately expressed that this delay would give his "foolish nephew" some much-needed time to act on his unspoken feelings for Sang Qi. He then had Yan Yan practice a horse stance, instructing him to hold the difficult pose for one hour.
Later that night, Sang Qi awoke in the cave, reflecting on Yan Yunzhi's silent efforts for her. She recalled how he secretly helped her at the Imperial College, fighting for equal opportunities, caring for her safety, remembering her casual preferences, and respecting her ideals and habits. She affectionately called him "White," the obedient, clingy, considerate, sensible, and well-behaved person her brother had mentioned. Yan Yunzhi, however, insisted she call him Deputy Chief, maintaining his formal demeanor.
Despite her praises, he seemed indifferent, leading her to remark that he was "meaningless" and always maintaining his "Deputy Chief" air. As the cold intensified, he simply told her to rest more. Yan Yunzhi found himself contemplating kissing Sang Qi as she slept like a docile cat beside him. He struggled with the urge, chastising himself for taking advantage of the situation, yet acknowledging his inability to control his burgeoning feelings for the person he liked right beside him.
When Sang Qi suddenly stirred and looked at him in confusion, Yan Yunzhi quickly pretended to be swatting at mosquitoes. As dawn broke, Zhuo Wenyuan, accompanied by Yan Yan and others, arrived at the cave to initiate the rescue. Sang Qi awoke and realized Yan Yunzhi had a stiff neck. She offered to help him, but her attempts at massaging only seemed to twist his neck further, much to her chagrin.
Outside, seeing Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi in close proximity, Zhuo Wenyuan frantically began digging at the cave entrance with his bare hands. Yan Yan quickly intervened, urging him to use his foot to forcefully kick away the larger rocks. With a powerful kick, the remaining debris was cleared, and Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi were finally freed. Overwhelmed by anxiety and relief, Zhuo Wenyuan collapsed in a faint the moment he saw Sang Qi was safe.
After the rescue, Bai Shi slyly suggested that Yan Yunzhi feign a severe injury to gain Sang Qi's sympathy and closeness. Yan Yunzhi initially scoffed at the idea, deeming it beneath him. However, upon discovering that Sang Qi was diligently caring for the unconscious Zhuo Wenyuan, Yan Yunzhi promptly put on a sling, dramatically feigning a serious injury himself.
Adopting his role as Deputy Chief, Yan Yunzhi announced his intention to stay and personally care for Zhuo Wenyuan, leaving Sang Qi with little room to object. She then went to prepare some dessert soup for Zhuo Wenyuan. Once Sang Qi was out of earshot, both Yan Yunzhi and Zhuo Wenyuan immediately dropped their acts, their words laced with thinly veiled hostility as they both exaggerated their respective "injuries" and vied for Sang Qi's attention.
When Sang Qi returned with the soup, both men competed to be fed by her, leading to a comedic struggle over who she should attend to. Sang Qi, flustered, went to make more soup. Yan Yunzhi followed her and clarified that outside of the Imperial College, he had no right to interfere in her affairs, but he reminded her of her original purpose on the mountain: to learn martial arts. Sang Qi, annoyed, confronted him about his fake injury.
He responded by playfully claiming it was a new "Iron Head martial arts" training technique involving a sling to strengthen his neck, a skill he supposedly learned from her brother, before telling her to deliver the "sugar water" to Zhuo Wenyuan. Later, in her room, Sang Qi pondered Yan Yunzhi's perplexing behavior. She recalled her brother's advice to seek "White" for problems, but now "White" had become her biggest mystery.
She thought of his initial refusal of her pouch and his reluctance to let her win, contrasted with his sudden appearance to save her from danger and his careful, considerate care during difficult times. His unpredictable moods left her confused, wondering if he had a twin, though her maid, Lian Pian, insisted he always appeared the same. Feeling troubled, Sang Qi stepped outside for fresh air, only to find Yan Yunzhi already there.
She candidly admitted her concern for his "injury," stating that since he was hurt because of her, she would take full responsibility. Yan Yunzhi, amused, then asked her to swear she would "take care of him until he died" and "never abandon him," which she did. He then playfully admitted his injury was fake and asked her to remove the sling, only to immediately retract it, teasing her.
Meanwhile, Zhuo Wenyuan received urgent news that a shipment of goods in the south had been seized, and Noble Consort Zhuo was demanding his immediate presence in the palace to discuss the matter. He grappled with the decision to leave, fearing it would mean losing Sang Qi, but his attendant, Jing Mu, wisely advised him that staying would guarantee her loss. Resigned, Zhuo Wenyuan decided to descend the mountain the following day.
He bid farewell to Sang Qi, vaguely citing his illness as the reason for his departure. Soon after leaving, Zhuo Wenyuan met with his aunt, presumably Noble Consort Zhuo, who reprimanded him for his romantic entanglements on the mountain. She emphasized that personal affections were insignificant compared to their grand ambitions, suggesting he marry Song Jia Yin of the prominent Song family to secure political alliances.
While Zhuo Wenyuan briefly attempted to advocate for a union with the Sang family due to their military influence, his aunt dismissed the idea, citing the Emperor's preference for scholars and Sang Wei's stubborn nature. She gave him until his graduation from the Imperial College to consider marriage and dispatched him south to resolve the salt route issue, sternly warning him against the weakness of emotion.
Back at the manor, Yan Yan asked Sang Qi if she planned to return home, but she seemed content and wanted to stay. Yan Yan, too, expressed a desire to remain on the mountain, subtly hinting that he would prolong his stay if she also wished to do so. Sang Qi then continued her martial arts practice with Yan Yunzhi, growing frustrated that she couldn't get close enough to land a hit.
Yan Yunzhi revealed the numerous marks and tears on his outer garment, evidence that she had indeed managed to touch him. Sang Qi playfully responded that she wished the marks were deeper, even drawing blood, which prompted Yan Yunzhi to humorously accuse her of attempting to murder her senior.
Episode 11 Recap
The harvest break soon concluded, and Sang Qi and the others prepared to descend the mountain. Yan Yan remarked that after this trip to Lingwu Peak, things would surely be different once school resumed. Although usually a bit slow-witted, Yan Yan's observation was astute: after spending several days together, Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi's feelings for each other had subtly deepened, though neither had yet openly acknowledged it.
While Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi were practicing swordplay on the mountain, a masked figure in black suddenly appeared, lunging at them with a sword. Yan Yunzhi quickly shielded Sang Qi, engaging the attacker. To his surprise, the masked assailant was his Second Uncle, Yan He Xing. Yan He Xing seized an opportunity to strike Yan Yunzhi, knocking him back. Seeing this, Sang Qi quickly helped Yan Yunzhi retreat, carrying him on her back into a narrow stone crevice.
Yan He Xing clearly saw where they hid but, for the sake of his nephew's happiness, feigned ignorance and walked away. Inside the cramped space, Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi stood face-to-face, their breaths distinct, and they could even faintly feel each other's body heat. The moment grew awkward, so Sang Qi carefully moved out of the crevice first, explaining that her actions were out of necessity and not meant to be disrespectful.
Yan Yunzhi dismissed her concerns, adding it wasn't the first time she had been in such a situation, referencing an incident where he was poisoned. Meanwhile, Yan He Xing returned to the hut and began fighting Yan Yan. Lian Pian attempted to intervene but tripped. Yan Yan quickly moved to shield Lian Pian, enduring Yan He Xing's punches and kicks to protect her. Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi arrived just in time.
As Sang Qi drew her sword, Yan He Xing removed his mask, announcing that he was merely testing their progress before the harvest break concluded. Sang Qi immediately realized that Yan Yunzhi had known the masked man was his master all along. Yan Yunzhi tried to evade the question, but Yan He Xing bluntly exposed him, stating that Yan Yunzhi recognized him during their first exchange and deliberately took a hit to feign injury, allowing Sang Qi to carry him.
Yan Yunzhi retorted that he merely wanted to avoid ruining his uncle's test, unaware Sang Qi would simply carry him away. Sang Qi playfully threatened to leave him behind if danger struck again, to which Yan Yunzhi readily agreed. Yan He Xing concluded by wishing them a peaceful life, hoping they would never need to use the martial arts he taught them. Upon returning home, Sang Qi’s father, Grand Commandant Sang, had prepared a feast for her.
He playfully tested her improved martial arts by having her snatch a meatball from his hand. While pleased with her progress, he expressed concern about her spending a month on the mountain with several unmarried young men, fearing it would harm her reputation. He grounded her until the Imperial College reopened, forbidding her from leaving the house without his permission.
He even threatened Lian Pian with a meat ban if Sang Qi snuck out, causing Lian Pian to plead with her young lady to stay put. Su Jieyu invited everyone to her birthday celebration. Yan Yunzhi initially declined, wishing to avoid misunderstandings. However, upon learning that Sang Qi, who had been grounded since returning, would also be attending, he eagerly accepted. Sang Qi was overjoyed to finally leave the house to prepare a gift for Su Jieyu.
While out, she ran into Yan Yan, who, upon seeing Lian Pian, excitedly pulled Sang Qi aside to talk to Lian Pian, much to Sang Qi's annoyance. She forcefully separated them. Witnessing Yan Yan and Lian Pian's evident closeness, Sang Qi felt a touch of helplessness. She decided to enter a fabric store alone. There, she unexpectedly encountered Song Jiayin, and the two immediately engaged in a sharp verbal exchange.
Song Jiayin proudly presented a "Long Xiang Ink" cake, confidently declaring it Su Jieyu's favorite birthday gift. She explained its dual meaning: besides being a suitable gift for a scholar, it also subtly implied that when Su Jieyu married into the Yan family, Song Jiayin would be the primary wife, and Su Jieyu should "abide by the rules" and not "seduce" her husband with her talents.
Hearing Song Jiayin's condescending remarks, Sang Qi decided she needed to speak with Su Jieyu directly. Despite their recent acquaintance, Sang Qi knew Su Jieyu was sincere and wouldn't hide her feelings. Reciprocating that honesty, Sang Qi decided she shouldn't conceal her own developing thoughts from Su Jieyu either. She confessed that after spending time with Yan Yunzhi on the mountain, her feelings for him had changed.
She described him vividly, comparing him to the cool, comforting afternoon breeze at the frontier, the warm and fragrant scent of fire-roasted lamb, and the intoxicating sensation of horse milk wine. Su Jieyu expressed happiness that Sang Qi confided in her. She acknowledged that Sang Qi needed more time to sort through her emotions and suggested that she might find her answers at the upcoming birthday banquet.
At Su Jieyu’s birthday banquet, many young ladies and gentlemen from prestigious families were present. Everyone was curious about Yan Yunzhi’s gift. He presented a seemingly ordinary guqin, but it was revealed to be a rare treasure, hundreds of years old, crafted by a renowned master, and acquired by the Yan family at great expense. Gossiping guests noted that the Chinese character for "guqin" sounds like "love" and speculated if the Yan family intended to propose marriage.
Su Jieyu, pleased with the gift, invited Yan Yunzhi to perform a duet of "Phoenix Seeks Phoenix" with her. This deeply upset Sang Qi, who quietly left the banquet. Yan Yunzhi, seeing Sang Qi's distress, politely declined Su Jieyu's invitation, suggesting her brother, Mr. Qing Xuan, play instead. He then excused himself to follow Sang Qi. Later, Sang Qi learned the truth behind Yan Yunzhi's actions and was overjoyed.
Meanwhile, Yan Yan approached Lian Pian, revealing that his mother had arranged a marriage for him and that a proposal would soon be made. Lian Pian reacted with visible sadness and annoyance, sarcastically stating she didn't care about his affairs. Yan Yan tried to explain that it was his family’s unilateral decision and that he disagreed with it, planning to “drag it on.” Lian Pian, frustrated by his indecision, accused him of trying to appease everyone and avoid commitment.
Distressed, Yan Yan promised to speak with his mother again, but Lian Pian, still upset, walked away. Reflecting on everything, Sang Qi finally realized her true feelings for Yan Yunzhi, admitting to Lian Pian that she loved him. She pondered his often confusing behavior – how he seemed to play pranks and oppose her, yet also consistently helped and looked out for her, even understanding her desires.
Sang Qi also noted his frequent insistence that he only treated her well "because of her brother." Sang Qi acknowledged this, but ultimately decided that she needed to get to the bottom of his true feelings. Resolved to clarify things, she decided she would confront him the next day at the Imperial College.
Episode 12 Recap
As the harvest break drew to a close, the upcoming imperial examination became the sole focus at the Imperial College. Scholar Feng announced a new curriculum, shifting classes to Classic Literature and Divination in the mornings and Critical Thinking and Writing in the afternoons, effectively canceling all martial arts and law classes until the exam. Sang Qi expressed her dismay aloud, realizing this change meant fewer opportunities to see Yan Yunzhi. Later that morning, Sang Qi encountered Yan Yunzhi.
Their eyes met, and as Sang Qi was bumped and nearly fell, Yan Yunzhi quickly steadied her and tidied her basket. Sang Qi tried to speak, but before she could finish her question, Qing Xuan called Yan Yunzhi away, saying he was waiting at the Imperial College entrance. Yan Yunzhi asked Sang Qi what she wished to say, but seeing Qing Xuan's urgency, Sang Qi told him to attend to his business first and that they could speak another day.
Yan Yunzhi and Qing Xuan then headed to Qingfeng Restaurant. Qing Xuan expressed how Yan Yunzhi had seemingly ruined a good thing before departing, leaving Yan Yunzhi to meet with Su Jieyu. Su Jieyu clarified she wasn't there to cause trouble. Instead, she presented a birthday gift from Song Jiayin, pointing out a suspicious white powder found on the white cotton paper wrapping. She revealed that the powder was an addictive hallucinogen extracted from an expensive plant originating from Xizhao.
She explained that this particular type of powder, when consumed as a powder, was highly addictive and hallucinogenic, and that the plant was difficult to cultivate in Bianjing without specific environmental conditions, making its source hard to trace despite cases found near the border. Yan Yunzhi acknowledged the severity of the information, confirming his ongoing investigation into the matter, and promised to assign Yan San Lang to continue the lead.
Su Jieyu advised him to be cautious and offered her help before leaving quietly to avoid drawing attention. Shortly after, Zhuo Wenyuan returned to Bianjing. Sang Qi, upon meeting him, promptly invited him to Qingfeng Restaurant to celebrate his return, offering to pay for the meal. Coincidentally, they spotted Su Jieyu and Yan Yunzhi inside. Sang Qi, realizing Yan Yunzhi had been called away urgently by Su Jieyu, felt unhappy.
Zhuo Wenyuan, sensing the subtle tension, held Sang Qi's hand and closed the private room door, then quipped about rumors of a rift between the Yan and Su families seeming untrue. He then suggested they go eat, noting his hunger. Back at the residence that night, what Sang Qi had witnessed left her restless and unable to sleep. She ventured outside with a sword, practicing her master's techniques under the moonlight to vent her frustration.
Lian Pian soon joined her, also unable to sleep. Lian Pian asked if things hadn't gone well with Yan Yunzhi, to which Sang Qi admitted they hadn't even spoken. Lian Pian revealed she was restless because she heard Yan Yan was busy preparing for a marriage proposal. She speculated about the noble and pretty girl, but ultimately concluded that Yan Yan, despite his flaws, was a simple and good-hearted person, unlike "some others."
The next day at the Imperial College, Lian Pian insisted on accompanying Sang Qi to school. As they arrived, news spread like wildfire: Yan Yan had been injured by Song Luotian’s horse. Lian Pian, visibly distraught, pushed past Sang Qi to question the messenger. Just then, Song Luotian himself appeared. Sang Qi immediately confronted him, accusing him of callousness. Song Luotian, showing no remorse, defiantly declared he had a long-standing dislike for Yan Yan and had intentionally hurt him.
Enraged, Sang Qi lunged at Song Luotian, but Zhuo Wenyuan quickly intervened, restraining her. Unfazed, Lian Pian suddenly produced rotten vegetables and splattered them all over Song Luotian. Infuriated, Song Luotian threatened to report them to the Imperial College, but Sang Qi retorted that she would do the same. They then decided to visit Yan Yan. The truth behind Yan Yan's injury was less malicious than it appeared.
While Song Luotian was bickering with Yan Yan on the street, his horse was startled and accidentally injured Yan Yan. Despite knowing it was an accident, Song Luotian, wanting to save face in front of Sang Qi and the others, defiantly claimed responsibility. When Grand Tutor Song learned of his son’s actions, he was not upset. Instead, he praised Song Luotian, viewing the incident as an opportune moment to assert dominance over the Yan family.
Discovering that Yan Yan was seeking a marriage alliance, Grand Tutor Song instructed Song Luotian to propose to the same young lady. Though Song Luotian expressed disinterest, his father emphasized the girl's noble family and extensive wealth, explaining it as a strategic move to secure Song Luotian's future, regardless of his career path in officialdom. Meanwhile, back at the Imperial College, Scholar Feng announced a surprise pop quiz.
Sang Qi, who had dedicated her recent mountain retreat to martial arts training rather than studying, was overwhelmed. She approached Yan Yunzhi, hoping for some guidance. Yan Yunzhi offered to tutor her privately, but before he could elaborate, Zhuo Wenyuan interjected, suggesting that Yan Yunzhi was too busy and offering to help Sang Qi himself, advising they study in the classroom due to the noise. Sang Qi agreed and left with Zhuo Wenyuan.
Later, Yan Yunzhi waited outside after classes, only to see Sang Qi once again leave with Zhuo Wenyuan, who was carrying her books and engaging in lighthearted conversation. Frustrated, Yan Yunzhi tripped over a carriage wheel, barely catching himself. The following day, as Sang Qi attempted to study in her courtyard, firecrackers suddenly exploded, startling her. Lian Pian rushed in, breathlessly reporting that Yan Yan had gone to the Song Residence, accompanied by several people.
Remembering Yan Yan's earlier threat to give Song Luotian an "unforgettable gift," Sang Qi immediately feared he was going to cause trouble at the wedding. She and Lian Pian quickly made their way to the Song Residence. Upon arrival, Sang Qi confronted Yan Yan, scolding him for potentially ruining the festive occasion and reminding him that it was bad luck. Yan Yan, however, insisted he was there with sincere intentions to present his wedding gifts.
He opened the first box, revealing jade knee pads and bamboo floor mats, which he sarcastically presented as practical items for Song Luotian's future. Then, he opened another box, filled with old childhood toys, explaining they were items he had "stolen" from Song Luotian during their youth and had promised to return on his wedding day.
Touched by the sentimental gesture, Song Luotian was visibly moved and warmly invited Yan Yan to join the feast, which Yan Yan happily accepted, offering his congratulations. Yan Yunzhi arrived late at the wedding, taking a seat next to Sang Qi at the table designated for women, the sick and disabled, and students.
He explained that this table was more "down-to-earth" than the officials' table, then proceeded to rinse Sang Qi's chopsticks, a gesture that prompted Lian Pian to ask for hers to be cleaned too. Yan Yunzhi also peeled peanuts for Sang Qi. Zhuo Wenyuan then appeared at their table, offering Sang Qi some candied fruit. However, Yan Yunzhi swiftly intervened, warning Sang Qi against eating them, pointing out their overly sharp color and faint rotten odor, indicating they were spoiled.
He quickly checked Sang Qi's pulse, finding no immediate issues but advising her to report any discomfort. Soon after, Yan Yunzhi quietly excused himself from the table, claiming he needed some fresh air. Sang Qi, curious, noticed him heading into a specific room.
Meanwhile, at the banquet, Song Luotian was called to share the traditional cross-arms-and-drink wine with his bride, but he delayed the ceremony to challenge Yan Yan to a drinking contest, with Yan Yan boastfully claiming the festive atmosphere had miraculously healed his leg. Seizing the opportunity, Sang Qi quietly followed Yan Yunzhi. However, she accidentally tripped and fell, making a noise.
As a servant rushed over upon hearing the commotion, Sang Qi saw Yan Yunzhi enter a room marked "Song Tea Plantation." She quickly followed him inside and asked what he was doing there, just as someone else spotted them. Yan Yunzhi quickly pulled Sang Qi down, hiding them both in the shadows.
Episode 13 Recap
After the guards departed, Sang Qi found herself alone with Yan Yunzhi in the tea room of the Grand Tutor's Residence. She questioned his presence there, but he claimed he was merely feeling tipsy and sought tea leaves to sober up. Before Sang Qi could press further, Zhuo Wenyuan arrived. Seeing Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi emerge together, Zhuo Wenyuan grew suspicious and a hint of jealousy arose within him.
Yan Yunzhi quickly explained his tipsiness while Sang Qi stated she was merely passing by. Zhuo Wenyuan, however, deemed their unauthorized entry into the tea room inappropriate and urged them to leave to avoid being mistaken for thieves. Meanwhile, it was revealed that Yan Yunzhi was secretly on a mission, with an official cooperating to help him solve a mystery. The students were overjoyed to learn they would be working at the tea plantation the following day.
They expressed excitement at the prospect of an escape from classroom studies, viewing it as a welcome break before the imperial examination. Yan Yunzhi, however, reminded them that the purpose was to experience the hardships of farm life, not for leisure. As they prepared to depart, Zhuo Wenyuan brought oily pastries for Sang Qi, having woken up early to buy them. He also offered her a ride in his carriage. Sang Qi, finding the cakes too oily, politely declined.
As Yan Yunzhi approached, he announced a strict rule: no unnecessary items were allowed, and everyone must hike up the mountain on foot to temper their characters. Despite the students' complaints, they had no choice but to comply. On the journey, Yan Yan accidentally slipped, bumping into Sang Qi and causing her to sprain her ankle.
Zhuo Wenyuan immediately offered to carry her, as did Yan Yan, citing his recently healed leg injury and a desire to repay a past favor. However, Yan Yunzhi swiftly intervened, stating that as her teacher, it was his responsibility to ensure her safety, especially given the treacherous mountain path and their heavy luggage. He then carried Sang Qi on his back. Upon reaching the tea plantation, the students drew lots for their rooms.
Yan Yunzhi, however, arranged for Sang Qi to have a single room for her convenience as a female student. He then assigned Zhuo Wenyuan to share a room with him. Yan Yan, initially displeased with his roommates Song Luotian and Wei Zhan Hong, even considering a swap with Zhuo Wenyuan, ultimately decided against rooming with Yan Yunzhi after the latter imposed a strict rule prohibiting students from visiting each other's rooms after dark.
Later, Yan Yan and Zhuo Wenyuan paid a visit to Sang Qi's spacious and well-appointed room, admiring its amenities, including rouge and powder, which led Yan Yan to speculate that Yan Yunzhi had made special arrangements for their accommodation. Sang Qi, feeling tired, asked them to leave, prompting Yan Yan to hurry off, concerned about Song Luotian eating his fruit platter.
That night, as they lay in bed, Zhuo Wenyuan asked Yan Yunzhi if he feared his diligent efforts were one-sided. Yan Yunzhi, after a moment of thought, responded that he was unafraid and sought no returns for his actions. Zhuo Wenyuan called him stubborn, to which Yan Yunzhi retorted that Zhuo Wenyuan was no different.
When Zhuo Wenyuan asked if Yan Yunzhi believed Sang Qi would choose him, Yan Yunzhi admitted he didn't know, only that he would give his all. Zhuo Wenyuan implied that Yan Yunzhi was leveraging his position as Deputy Chief, but Yan Yunzhi readily agreed to fair competition between them. They then ended their conversation for the night. The next morning, Song Luotian and Yan Yan erupted into a heated argument over a missing fruit platter, nearly coming to blows.
Sang Qi quickly stepped in to mediate, but it was Yan Yunzhi's timely arrival that finally quelled the dispute. Yan Yunzhi then declared that formal labor had begun, instructing them to adhere to the tea plantation's rules as tea farmers. He led by example, joining the students in weeding, loosening soil, and picking tea leaves, with plans for tea roasting in the afternoon. Zhuo Wenyuan quickly demonstrated his efficiency in weeding, earning praise from his peers.
Yan Yunzhi, noticing Sang Qi's still-injured ankle, took over her heavy work. Later, Yan Yunzhi's assistant urged him to be more direct with Sang Qi about his feelings, but Yan Yunzhi insisted that now was not the time, as he needed to prioritize his investigation into the Song Tea Plantation, which he planned to conduct at night.
During their afternoon break, Lian Pian brought a box of snacks to Sang Qi, but to Sang Qi's disappointment, they were all Yan Yan's favorites. Lian Pian explained she had brought them for Yan Yan since his leg injury had just healed. Meanwhile, Yan Yunzhi and Zhuo Wenyuan engaged in a sharp debate about the art of tea picking, each highlighting the subtleties of their preferred methods.
Zhuo Wenyuan deliberately blew on the tea leaves in Yan Yunzhi's hand, causing some to fly into Yan Yunzhi's eye. Zhuo Wenyuan, expressing immediate concern, gently blew on his eye to remove the debris. From Sang Qi's perspective, this interaction appeared to be an intimate gesture, causing her to panic and quickly usher Lian Pian and Yan Yan away.
Later, Yan Yunzhi announced a tea tasting session for everyone to enjoy the fruits of their labor after roasting their picked leaves. Yan Yan, hoping to extend his time with Lian Pian, suggested that Sang Qi act as the tea master, a role she accepted, recalling her brother had taught her the art of tea. However, the proposal immediately sparked a contention between Zhuo Wenyuan and Yan Yunzhi, who both demanded that Sang Qi brew their tea first.
Their bickering escalated into an intense argument, causing Sang Qi considerable distress. Overwhelmed, she forcefully pushed them apart, stating that a tea ceremony should be an elegant affair. Lian Pian later confided in Sang Qi, suggesting that Yan Yunzhi genuinely had feelings for her. Sang Qi acknowledged his kindness but remained uncertain if his affections stemmed from genuine interest or merely from his connection to her late brother.
At night, Yan Yunzhi continued his investigation of the Song Tea Plantation, searching for something specific despite the moist soil being unsuitable for Xizhao plants, but he felt it was nearby. He instructed his assistant to proceed with caution due to increased night defenses. Sang Qi, also out late, encountered Yan Yunzhi and inquired about his injured hand.
He assured her it was fine, revealing that he had protected her earlier because her tea ceremony skills were passed down from her brother, Sang Yu, and he didn't wish for her brother's legacy to be tarnished. Sang Qi, feeling that his concern was still tied to her brother, was then joined by Zhuo Wenyuan, who also claimed he couldn't sleep.
The three of them decided to walk Sang Qi back to her room, with Yan Yunzhi and Zhuo Wenyuan warning her not to wander alone at night. During the daytime labor, Song Luotian brazenly called in many long-term farmworkers to do his share of the work, while he idly sat in the arbor, giving orders. Yan Yan, unable to tolerate this, confronted him, leading to another heated argument that almost escalated into a physical fight.
Sang Qi intervened once more, trying to calm them. Amidst the commotion, an unnoticed man quietly left the tea garden. Later, Su Jieyu arrived at the tea plantation with a selection of tasty dishes for the students. Yan Yunzhi appeared flustered by her presence. When Su Jieyu settled beside him, Sang Qi felt a surge of jealousy.
Su Jieyu then directly stated that she was aware his presence at the tea plantation was merely a pretense for investigating a case, and she had come to offer her assistance. However, Yan Yunzhi, addressing her as Lan, firmly rejected her involvement, reiterating his previous stance and urging her to return to Bianjing due to the inconvenience of her presence there.
Observing the exchange, Lian Pian noted Yan Yunzhi's specific care for Sang Qi, including arranging a private room for her, and expressed concern about the deepening relationship between Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi. That same night, Zhuo Wenyuan secretly brought drunken fish and vintage wine to Sang Qi's room, hoping to cheer her up as he had noticed her looking worried throughout the day. Sang Qi, however, was not interested and asked him to leave.
Zhuo Wenyuan insisted on staying, explaining that he had sneaked the food and wine in and feared being discovered by Yan Yunzhi if he left immediately. He offered to chat if she had anything on her mind, but Sang Qi maintained there was nothing, attributing her mood to tiredness. Suddenly, they heard someone approaching outside, causing them to fear that Yan Yunzhi was conducting a room inspection.
Episode 14 Recap
Late at night, Zhuo Wenyuan brought some food to Sang Qi's room. Suddenly, an urgent knocking startled them. Sang Qi, fearing it was Yan Yunzhi on inspection, urged Zhuo Wenyuan to hide. To her surprise, it was Yan Yan at the door, who burst in, frantically claiming that Song Luo Tian was plotting against him with a grand scheme to trap him, and that assassins might be outside. Before Sang Qi could react, another knock sounded.
Panicked, Yan Yan dove under the bed, only to discover Zhuo Wenyuan already there. Sang Qi opened the door to find Yan Yunzhi, feeling flustered. Just as they sat down, Lan arrived. Concerned about potential misunderstandings in the middle of the night, Sang Qi insisted Yan Yunzhi also hide under the bed, despite his initial reluctance. Lan spoke candidly, expressing her doubts about Sang Qi's true feelings for Yan Yunzhi.
She believed Sang Qi might merely be projecting her longing and trust for her deceased brother, Sang Yu, onto Yan Yunzhi, seeing it as mere transference. Lan explained that Yan Yunzhi was a man of great loyalty, and his kindness towards Sang Qi was likely to fulfill a promise to his old friend, Sang Yu, suggesting he might only see her as a younger sister.
Lan warned that a reckless confession could lead to an awkward situation, similar to Song Jia Yin’s case, and would only bring unhappiness given Sang Qi’s continued studies at the Imperial College. She advised Sang Qi, being young, not to waste her time on a relationship that would not end well. Overhearing this from under the bed, Yan Yunzhi was displeased but found it inconvenient to emerge. He subtly pushed Yan Yan out to break the tense atmosphere.
Upon Yan Yan's abrupt appearance, the atmosphere became extremely awkward. Seeing this, Sang Qi prompted Zhuo Wenyuan to emerge as well. Lan was visibly shocked, leading Sang Qi to quickly concoct a story that the three of them had been secretly drinking to avoid detection. After Lan departed, Yan Yunzhi sternly admonished Yan Yan and Zhuo Wenyuan for their misbehavior, then requested Sang Qi to meet him after they left the mountain.
Sang Qi, still pondering Lan's words, quietly dismissed her concerns about being in love with the Deputy Chief as "nonsense." After several days of investigation, Bai Shi reported to Yan Yunzhi that he had discovered a highly suspicious and heavily guarded planting area within the Song family tea plantation. Recognizing it was time to act, Yan Yunzhi instructed Yan San Lang to gather his men.
That night, Yan Yunzhi meticulously drew a detailed map of the Song Tea Plantation, marking several suspicious locations based on his own observations from the hill and Bai Shi's intelligence. He then delivered the map to Yan San Lang, who assured him that the tea plantation would be completely surrounded by morning, allowing no one to escape. Unbeknownst to Yan Yunzhi, Zhuo Wenyuan, feigning sleep, was aware of Yan Yunzhi's actions.
Upon returning to his room, Yan Yunzhi grew suspicious when he noticed fresh mud on Zhuo Wenyuan's shoes and found his blanket unusually warm. He gently tucked him in, while Zhuo Wenyuan maintained his pretense of sleep, showing no signs of being disturbed. The following morning, Yan San Lang led his forces to raid the Song Tea Plantation under the pretext of arresting a fugitive.
They swiftly moved to confiscate the illegal plants, accusing the Song family of conspiring with Xizhao and planting prohibited species. However, a man claiming to be Official Wei intervened, presenting a land deed and ledger that proved the cultivated land belonged to Official Wei, not Grand Tutor Song.
Faced with this unexpected development and the presented evidence, Yan San Lang, though momentarily stunned, decided to halt the raid, stating he would investigate the matter further in the capital and ordered the evidence sent to the Prefecture Court.
Following this incident, the Imperial College's farming experience was abruptly concluded, leaving students to speculate that it might have been a cover for an investigation and that Grand Tutor Song had likely used Official Wei as a scapegoat, though the case was quickly closed by the authorities. Yan Yunzhi met Sang Qi by the lake.
He asked if she thought he had called her all this way just to discuss the tea plantation case, implying there was something more personal to address. When Sang Qi mentioned various topics like her studies, her brother, or even their master, Yan Yunzhi gently pressed, asking if they couldn't discuss anything else. As they admired the beautiful weather and scenery, Yan Yunzhi commented on enjoying the company of a "beautiful lady."
Sang Qi, still influenced by Lan's words, mistakenly interpreted his sentiment, asking if he saw her as "family" or just a "little sister," reinforcing her fear that Lan's assessment was correct. Yan Yunzhi, having heard enough, clearly stated that he believed she had understood his feelings all along. He expressed his weariness of guessing and his desire for a clear, explicit answer from her. He then plainly confessed, declaring his love for her. He then leaned in to kiss her.
Sang Qi, initially surprised, admitted the moment felt "a little abrupt" and she "didn't feel much of it," playfully proposing they "try again." She then initiated a second, more passionate kiss. The two shared a sweet moment, embracing by the water. Sang Qi asked if he had planned to confess after the investigation, to which he playfully avoided the question, urging her to watch her step, while she insisted on watching only him.
She pressed him about when he fell for her, but he feigned forgetfulness, prompting her to claim she remembered exactly when she fell for him, though she refused to tell him. Yan Yunzhi then suggested she call him "Yun Zhi" when they were alone, but Sang Qi felt it was too awkward, preferring to stick with "Deputy Chief." He accepted, telling her she could call him whatever she wished.
When asked about his future plans, Yan Yunzhi revealed his intention to propose to her and marry her after she graduated from Imperial College. Sang Qi, however, asked him to keep their relationship a secret until after her graduation, wanting to finish her studies at the Imperial College on her own merits. Yan Yunzhi agreed, promising to do whatever she asked from then on. After their confession, a palpable sweetness enveloped Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi.
However, they were still in a teacher-student relationship, making overt displays of affection at the Imperial College impossible. They resorted to discreetly finding opportunities to talk, but these attempts were frequently interrupted. They decided a midnight rendezvous was their best option. Yan Yunzhi suggested they use a cat's meow as a signal for Sang Qi to climb over the wall, an idea she found exciting but also a bit inappropriate. During the day, their public interactions were strained.
Yan Yunzhi would openly criticize Sang Qi's "awful handwriting" or "bad posture," even playfully hitting her head, all to create a false impression of discord and avoid suspicion. Sang Qi privately confronted him, pointing out his obvious tactics and her embarrassment, to which Yan Yunzhi explained it was the only way they could find moments to converse. He apologized for his overbearing behavior and promised to be more considerate.
That night, as Sang Qi's maid, Lian Pian, made cat meows to signal Yan Yunzhi, Sang Qi's father suddenly appeared, woken by the noise. Sang Qi quickly fabricated a story about chasing a wild cat that was disturbing her father's sleep and training plans for the next day. Her father, initially determined to confront the cat with a large blade, was convinced by Sang Qi to let her handle it with a smaller blade.
This provided a brief window for Sang Qi to meet Yan Yunzhi outside the wall. While her father continued his attempts to scare off the "cat," Sang Qi briefly joined Yan Yunzhi, who also made cat-like sounds to keep up the charade, before she retreated back inside, ensuring her father would believe the nuisance was gone.
Yan Yunzhi later visited Official Wei in prison, who, despite facing a death sentence for conspiring with Xizhao, remained stoic and refused to divulge any information, simply stating he deserved his fate. Yan Yunzhi observed Official Wei gently pick up a spider that had landed on him and place it safely on the ground, a small act that made Yan Yunzhi doubt such a kind-hearted man could be truly guilty of such a severe crime.
Soon after, the case was concluded with Official Wei convicted as the main culprit, though his life was spared and his family exiled, while Grand Tutor Song only received a pay cut for negligence. Sang Qi, deeply skeptical of the verdict and concerned for the displaced tea farmers, sought out Yan Yunzhi, publicly challenging him on why he hadn't helped the Prefecture Court uncover the truth and clear the farmers' names.
Yan Yunzhi, in turn, feigned a public argument with her, telling her to pretend to quarrel with him, to create a diversion. Once they were alone in the garden, Yan Yunzhi explained his reasoning: Official Wei's unusual calmness and refusal to defend himself suggested he had made a deal with the true mastermind to escape execution in exchange for his silence.
Yan Yunzhi surmised that Official Wei's life would still be in danger during his exile and planned to secretly follow him to uncover the real culprit. However, his position at the Imperial College made a sudden departure suspicious, so he needed Sang Qi to help him "act a play" to provide a valid reason for his absence.
Before embarking on this mission, Yan Yunzhi stood before Sang Yu's cenotaph, solemnly vowing never to betray Sang Qi and to protect her as long as he lived. Later, the couple enjoyed a meal at a noodle stall, with Sang Qi checking with Lian Pian beforehand to ensure they wouldn't be recognized. Yan Yunzhi, typically accustomed to not carrying money, found himself in a humorous predicament when he realized he couldn't pay for their meal.
Sang Qi, also without money, found the situation amusing. Yan Yunzhi, drawing from a friend's past experience, decided their best course of action was to simply walk out without paying. As they fled from the pursuing vendor, Sang Qi teased Yan Yunzhi, asking if it was appropriate for the Deputy Chief to run off without paying.
Yan Yunzhi promised to settle the bill the next day, but mused that since they were now acting as a "bandit couple," they should truly embrace the role and do something they normally wouldn't dare.
Episode 15 Recap
After enjoying a meal for which they had no money, Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi decided to settle the bill the following day. As they walked away from the bustling streets to a secluded spot, a powerful spark of affection ignited between them. Yan Yunzhi, unable to resist, leaned in and softly kissed Sang Qi, filling the air with a sweet intimacy. He then playfully suggested they embrace their roles as a "pair of thieves" and do something truly unexpected.
Soon after, a beautiful display of fireworks lit up the sky, captivating Sang Qi. She excitedly led Yan Yunzhi to a nearby bridge for a better view. However, she became so engrossed that she didn't notice Yan Yunzhi momentarily stepping away. Panicked, Sang Qi called out for him, but he soon returned, carrying two cups of water.
He revealed he had been teasing her about their lack of funds, wanting their outing to be special and memorable, much to Sang Qi's amusement and slight exasperation, though she found him sometimes a bit silly. Meanwhile, at the Imperial College, the students lamented the departure of Wei Zhan Hong, who had been taken away by officials following Official Wei's exile.
They noted how Wei Zhan Hong had always been loyal to Song Luotian, only to be discarded when no longer useful, which they found deeply regrettable. Just as Wei Zhan Hong was being escorted away, Song Luotian arrived, attempting to intervene with a whip, but his own servants quickly restrained him, reminding him of his father's strict orders not to leave the residence and warning him of potential punishment.
Song Luotian promised Wei Zhan Hong that he would seek help from his father, the Grand Tutor, to intercede on his behalf. However, a disheartened Wei Zhan Hong firmly declared that he no longer wished for any ties with the Song family, leaving Song Luotian dejected and unable to calm his inner disappointment as Wei Zhan Hong was led away.
Under the cloak of night, Grand Tutor Song met with Zhuo Wenyuan in a secluded, austere room, which Zhuo Wenyuan explained was conducive to clear thinking and insight. Grand Tutor Song expressed his gratitude for Zhuo Wenyuan's shrewd plan that had helped resolve the tea plantation incident and offered his full support should Zhuo Wenyuan wish to pursue an official career.
Grand Tutor Song then voiced his concerns, stating that while Official Wei had taken the blame, the truth might eventually surface, bringing culpability back to him if Official Wei couldn't withstand the intense scrutiny. He also saw Yan Yunzhi as a significant threat, believing Yan Yunzhi's interference had exposed the tea plantation affair.
Fearing Yan Yunzhi would not let the matter rest, Grand Tutor Song suggested eliminating Official Wei to prevent future complications, a plan Zhuo Wenyuan calmly assured him he would handle. News spread that Grand Tutor Song would deliver an imperial lecture at the Imperial College, seemingly to clarify public perception following the tea plantation incident. The students, however, saw it as a brazen attempt to gain favor and decided to disrupt his lecture.
During his speech, where Grand Tutor Song proclaimed his unwavering loyalty to His Majesty and dismissed rumors against him, a pre-arranged branch from the famed "Evil-eradicating Cypress" suddenly fell, narrowly missing him. Incensed, Grand Tutor Song vowed to uncover the culprits. Yan Yunzhi then arrived, taking full responsibility for the incident. Sang Qi, feigning anger, reprimanded Yan Yunzhi for trying to cover for the students, further enraging Grand Tutor Song.
The students, in a show of defiance, loudly declared their own culpability to protect Yan Yunzhi. Sang Qi then provocatively suggested cutting down the "Evil-eradicating Cypress" to appease Grand Tutor Song, claiming it had mistakenly offended him.
As the students prepared to chop the tree, Grand Tutor Song's own son, Song Luotian, appeared, leading to a tense confrontation where Grand Tutor Song, humiliated, vowed to report the entire farce to His Majesty and disowned his son, ordering him to "get lost." Later that night, Yan Yunzhi met with His Majesty. His Majesty reprimanded Yan Yunzhi for the chaotic imperial lecture and the "petty tricks," implying Yan Yunzhi had failed to properly harass Grand Tutor Song.
Yan Yunzhi humbly accepted the blame for allowing Grand Tutor Song to be humiliated. His Majesty then revealed his knowledge that the Song family was indeed involved in the tea plantation incident, but their swift move to blame the Wei family had foiled Yan San Lang's initial investigation. To both appease Grand Tutor Song and allow Yan Yunzhi to fully pursue the investigation into the Song family, His Majesty announced Yan Yunzhi's removal from his post as Deputy Chief.
Yan Yunzhi acknowledged His Majesty's wisdom and vowed to fulfill his expectations, understanding this was a covert operation requiring utmost caution. The following day, a panicked Yan Yan rushed into the Imperial College, announcing Yan Yunzhi's dismissal as Deputy Chief at Grand Tutor Song's insistence. The news shocked the students, especially Sang Qi, who stood up in alarm.
The students clamored to find Yan Yunzhi, nearly causing Scholar Feng, who was temporarily taking over as head of the Imperial College, to collapse from frustration over their lack of discipline. After Scholar Feng managed to calm them, Yan Yunzhi briefly returned to collect his books, calmly advising the students to respect Scholar Feng and the new rules.
Back at Sang Qi's residence, her father, aware of her mischievous involvement in the Imperial College incident that had become a laughingstock among officials, grounded her, forbidding her from going out or receiving guests at night. However, Zhuo Wenyuan arrived to offer Sang Qi an escape from her confinement, teasingly referring to himself as her future husband.
The students remained deeply concerned about Yan Yunzhi, speculating about his whereabouts and state of mind, even wondering if he was secretly crying to his father or planning a counterattack. Sang Qi tried to dissuade them from bothering him, suggesting he preferred solitude and might be upset by their intrusion, but they insisted on finding him. Eventually, after searching various locations, Yan Yan bravely entered a bathhouse and discovered Yan Yunzhi.
Yan Yunzhi appeared disheveled and heavily intoxicated, casually inviting them to drink with him, though Sang Qi averted her gaze, urging the others to leave. He mockingly declared his relief at no longer being Deputy Chief, claiming he was tired of dealing with students and looked forward to more time for leisure and drinking with friends, though he specifically excluded Sang Qi from these future outings. The students, seeing him seemingly well and carefree, began to disperse, relieved.
However, once only Yan Yan remained, Yan Yunzhi abruptly dropped his drunken act, snatched the wine bottle, and sharply questioned Yan Yan if he thought the assigned homework was insufficient, assuming his stern teacher persona. Meanwhile, Zhuo Wenyuan, having observed Yan Yunzhi's performance from a distance, noted his continued feigned indulgence, instructing his subordinate to bring all the wine from his residence, further maintaining his act.
Separately, Zhuo Wenyuan was informed by his subordinate that the troop escorting Official Wei had left Bianjing. Despite knowing that Yan San Lang (Yan Yunzhi) had sent people to monitor and protect Official Wei along the way, Zhuo Wenyuan remained unconcerned. He instructed his subordinate, Qian Jiu, to prepare to intercept Official Wei once they reached Jingzhou, where they had more resources to ensure the operation's success.
Meanwhile, Yan Yunzhi had sent Bai Shi to invite Qing Xuan for an outing, a detail Bai Shi shared with Su Lan. The next day, Sang Qi encountered Su Lan, who was busy purchasing snacks for her upcoming outing with Yan Yunzhi. Sang Qi's heart sank upon learning this, realizing Yan Yunzhi’s casual demeanor about his dismissal was, in fact, an elaborate deception.
Despite her internal turmoil, Sang Qi maintained her composure, acknowledging Su Lan's plans and reflecting on how Yan Yunzhi's newfound "freedom" was indeed part of a larger, hidden agenda, a truth Su Lan remained blissfully unaware of.
Episode 16 Recap
Yan Yunzhi, having uncovered some leads in his investigation, set out of the city under the pretense of a leisurely trip with a friend. However, instead of Qing Xuan, Su Jieyu arrived, explaining that she had already spoken with Yan Yunzhi's mother, who was delighted by the prospect of them traveling together. Yan Yunzhi, displeased by this unexpected turn, turned to Bai Shi, who lowered his head awkwardly, avoiding eye contact.
Meanwhile, Sang Qi was at a restaurant, troubled by her brother's case. She ruminated on how the Wei family seemed to be mere puppets in the tea plantation matter, yet there was no solid evidence to link it directly to the Song family. She noted the mysterious connection to Xizhao, and the lack of ties between her brother and the Song family. She felt the clues were too scattered to draw conclusions and wondered if Yan Yunzhi was withholding information.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a commotion outside as Song Luotian loudly demanded a room, irritating Sang Qi further. When she stepped out to scold him, she noticed a distinct change in Song Luotian; gone was his usual arrogance, replaced by a sense of grievance and melancholy. Softened by his demeanor, Sang Qi invited him to join her in her private room. Song Luotian confessed his concern for Wei Zhanhong, who had been exiled.
He admitted to bribing the soldiers escorting Wei Zhanhong to ensure his better treatment on the journey. However, news from a stage station indicated that the Wei family was about to reach the border of Jingzhou. Overwhelmed with worry, Song Luotian sought solace in drink, admitting his father forbade him from mentioning the Wei family. Sang Qi, initially surprised, had always assumed Wei Zhanhong was merely Song Luotian’s subservient follower, but now saw a genuine bond between them.
In his drunken state, Song Luotian revealed the truth: he had asked Wei Zhanhong to put laxatives in Sang Qi’s food. Sang Qi immediately recalled the incident at the Imperial College and realized with a shock that she had consumed not laxatives, but a deadly poison from Xizhao. This revelation strongly implicated Wei Zhanhong and, by extension, the Wei family, in connections with Xizhao.
Fearing Yan Yunzhi was walking into a trap, Sang Qi rushed towards Jingzhou, with Zhuo Wenyuan following close behind. Yan Yunzhi and Bai Shi, in pursuit, eventually caught up with the escorting party in a forest. Yan Yunzhi believed he was rescuing an innocent Official Wei, but the official suddenly turned, attempting to assassinate him. Fortunately, Sang Qi arrived just in time, shooting an arrow that struck the blade in Official Wei's hand.
Amidst the chaos, Xizhao operatives attacked Sang Qi, prompting Yan Yunzhi to quickly step in front of her, taking a wound in the process. Soon after, soldiers sent by Official Yan arrived, forcing the Xizhao attackers to retreat. Yan Yunzhi, injured, ordered Bai Shi to assist him, while instructing Zhuo Wenyuan to pursue Wei Zhanhong and stating he would chase Official Wei himself. The pursuit continued until nightfall. Sang Qi and the others eventually found Official Wei’s body.
The Xizhao operatives, cornered at a cliff, fought desperately. Wei Zhanhong, unable to escape, gritted his teeth and leaped from the cliff. Zhuo Wenyuan, observing this, exchanged a glance with Qian Jiu, and together they systematically eliminated the remaining government officials. Qian Jiu later revealed that according to their original plan, upon Yan San Lang receiving news of the Wei family nearing Jingzhou, Yan Yunzhi was expected to follow them covertly. However, Sang Qi's unexpected appearance had disrupted their scheme.
Qian Jiu, having already anticipated the possibility of failure, had stationed assassins along the return route as a contingency. Zhuo Wenyuan glared at Qian Jiu, sternly warning her not to harm Sang Qi. Qian Jiu scoffed, pushing away a sword near her, assuring him that she had already given explicit orders not to hurt "your Sang Qi."
On the return journey, Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi were ambushed by Xizhao operatives but managed to evade the attack due to their quick reactions. However, Yan Yunzhi's grave injuries made further travel difficult. Sang Qi insisted on staying with him, sending Bai Shi back to the city for a physician and a carriage. As moonlight filtered through the trees, Sang Qi asked Yan Yunzhi about her brother.
Yan Yunzhi recounted Sang Yu's last words before his sudden death: "With one wrong move, everything falls apart." The coroner had attributed Sang Yu's death to a sudden cardiac arrest, but Sang Yu had explicitly told Yan Yunzhi that his health was improving. Yan Yunzhi confessed that when he tried to investigate further, all traces of Sang Yu in the Imperial College had been deliberately erased by people claiming to be from the imperial court.
He suspected Sang Yu had uncovered a crucial secret, leading to his murder, and acknowledged his own inability to fight such a powerful, hidden enemy as a mere student back then. Yan Yunzhi admitted that his initial harsh treatment of Sang Qi and sending her to Lingwu Mountain were all measures to protect her, to ensure she could defend herself against similar ambushes.
He also revealed he had been secretly investigating similar deaths since becoming the Vice Director, and that the Xizhao powder was found at a similar crime scene around the time Sang Qi entered the Imperial College. Some time later, a recovered Yan Yunzhi arrived at the Imperial College, bringing an assortment of pastries, much to the delight of Yan Yan and the other students. Sang Qi, however, remained puzzled by his actions.
Yan Yunzhi, taking her hand and whispering in her ear, assured her it was all part of an act and requested to speak with her privately later. After returning to the Imperial College, Yan Yunzhi visited Sang Taifu to formally propose marriage to Sang Qi. Sang Taifu, concerned about potential political implications and attracting unwanted attention if the two powerful families were to unite, subtly rebuffed the proposal, stating he would wait for Sang Qi's decision.
Meanwhile, Sang Taifu also suggested Sang Qi take a minor official post in Chenliu, seemingly to remove her from the capital. News of Yan Yunzhi's imminent departure to Chenliu spread among the students, leading to a plan to perform poorly in exams to pressure the Emperor to bring him back. Zhuo Wenyuan, however, expressed a more cynical view, stating he was there to study, not to follow Yan Yunzhi.
Later, Yan Yunzhi and Zhuo Wenyuan had a clandestine meeting where Zhuo Wenyuan revealed he knew Yan Yunzhi's true intention for taking the Chenliu post. Yan Yunzhi then sought out Sang Qi alone, explaining that taking the Chenliu post was precisely to gain the necessary official standing to propose marriage to her father. He then directly proposed marriage to her, asking if she would be willing to leave with him. Sang Qi, blushing, demurred, saying she hadn't agreed yet.
She hesitated, torn between her unfinished brother's will and the unresolved Xizhao mystery. Yan Yunzhi pressed her, asking what her heart truly desired. Just then, Sang Qi seemed to spot something and suddenly yelled, "Go away!"
Episode 17 Recap
Picking up from where they left off, Sang Qi asked Yan Yunzhi about his injury. As Yan Yunzhi continued to press Sang Qi about his potential departure, she abruptly shouted "Go away!" He was taken aback, only to realize Sang Qi was actually telling a lizard to leave as it secretly approached them.
After a quick glance at the lizard, Yan Yunzhi turned back to Sang Qi, reiterating that he could not yet leave due to his deceased brother's unfulfilled wish and the unresolved matters in Xizhao. However, he then added that if she did not want him to leave, he would not. Sang Qi confessed that she did not want him to leave and wished for him to stay. Yan Yunzhi, seemingly satisfied, embraced her tightly.
After Yan Yunzhi's departure from the Imperial College, the quality of the students' compositions severely declined, with Scholar Feng even remarking that they were "worse than rotten eggs" and fit only for papering walls. Concerned by the profound impact on the students' studies, the scholars discussed petitioning His Majesty for Yan Yunzhi's return. Scholar Feng, noting his own influence among the students, offered to report the matter to His Majesty if the students were truly keen on Yan Yunzhi's return.
News of the petition spread quickly, and students eagerly gathered to sign it. Initially, Zhuo Wenyuan hesitated to sign, but a fellow student urged him, pointing out that without Deputy Chief Yan's return, their "sufferings with Scholar Feng" would be endless. Eventually, Zhuo Wenyuan relented and signed. After days of waiting, the petition had yielded no response, leaving the students anxious. Suddenly, Yan Yunzhi appeared, quietly entering the Imperial College gates.
Students rushed to greet him, expressing how much they had missed him and exclaiming that their "suffering had ended." Yan Yunzhi, observing their renewed energy, remarked that Scholar Feng had managed them well. He then announced that His Majesty had agreed to his return, but with a significant condition: this year's imperial examination results must surpass those of previous years to prove his qualification as Deputy Chief. The students voiced their dismay, finding the condition impossible.
To meet this challenge, Yan Yunzhi, in consultation with Scholar Feng, decided to merge classes. Starting that day, Class Sky would share a classroom with Class Yellow, and Class Terre with Class Black, encouraging mutual learning and assistance among classmates. Students grumbled about the impending "hard days" under the new regime. Under the new classroom arrangements, Sang Qi and Zhuo Wenyuan became deskmates. Zhuo Wenyuan actively assisted Sang Qi with her studies, charming her with his compliments.
As Yan Yunzhi entered the classroom, Zhuo Wenyuan deliberately engaged Sang Qi in conversation. Yan Yunzhi, seemingly perturbed, used the excuse of reviewing Sang Qi's composition to call her to his study. Zhuo Wenyuan attempted to join, claiming his own composition needed improvement, but Yan Yunzhi dismissed him by praising his work as a "first-class model." In his study, Yan Yunzhi praised Sang Qi's revised composition, noting its clarity and coherence.
Sang Qi, however, expressed anxiety about securing a good rank in the upcoming examination. Yan Yunzhi reassured her that rank was not the most crucial aspect. For him, the exam was a test of his leadership, and for her, it was an important step to validate the possibility of women studying in public institutions.
Sang Qi inquired about the ongoing investigation into the Jingzhou Wei family case, but Yan Yunzhi advised her to focus on her duties as a student for the time being. Yan Yunzhi asked Sang Qi about her plans after the imperial examination. Sang Qi enthusiastically declared her desire for a celebratory feast, followed by announcing their relationship to everyone.
Yan Yunzhi suggested he should make the announcement, but Sang Qi argued that if she, as Sang Qi, openly declared it, no one would dare question her or accuse him of taking advantage of his position. Yan Yunzhi conceded, impressed by her foresight. She also revealed her intention to visit Lingwu Mountain to inform her Master that she was now his "nephew's wife," hoping he would stop teasing her.
Yan Yunzhi playfully offered to pull off her Master's beard if he continued. Later, Yan Yunzhi proposed marriage to Sang Qi for after the examination. Although Sang Qi did not give a direct answer, she implied her acceptance by mentioning her new status as his "nephew's wife."
Yan Yunzhi, noticing her playful tone about "vinegar" from his earlier possessive remark, affirmed his jealousy and playfully extracted a promise from her that she would only seek his guidance for her studies and not that of any other man. Yan Yunzhi met with Yan San Lang at a restaurant. Yan San Lang reported on his investigation into the Wei family, confirming their deep ties with Xizhao.
The coroner had discovered a carved tattoo on Official Wei's shoulder, identifying him as a long-term Xizhao spy embedded within the imperial court. Although Wei Zhan Hong's current whereabouts were unknown, his involvement in Sang Qi's poisoning at the Imperial College meant he was undoubtedly implicated. Yan San Lang suspected that Xizhao had first manipulated the Wei family, making them take the blame, and then planned to eliminate Yan Yunzhi while he was secretly protecting them.
This strategy would eliminate both the Wei family and Yan Yunzhi, leaving Yan Yunzhi's death without counter-evidence and allowing Xizhao to falsely incriminate him as their accomplice. Yan San Lang then remarked on Yan Yunzhi's changed approach, noting his past willingness to risk everything for an investigation, and teasingly suggested he had "gone soft" after being "bullied" by Grand Tutor Song. He advised extreme caution, noting that with the imperial court's serious investigation, Xizhao would likely be inactive for now.
Yan San Lang then proposed shifting their focus to the Song family, expecting them to eventually reveal their hand. Meanwhile, Qian Jiu met with Zhuo Wenyuan at her side house. She acknowledged the difficulty in dealing with Yan Yunzhi, but reassured Zhuo Wenyuan that their recent setback in Jingzhou was not a complete loss, as they still held a bargaining chip. She advised laying low for the time being.
Zhuo Wenyuan revealed his ambition to be the top scholar in the upcoming imperial examination to fulfill his aunt's expectations. Qian Jiu affirmed his talent, confident he would rank first. However, she warned him that while they had refrained from acting against Yan Yunzhi or Sang Qi to avoid complications, if either of them threatened Xizhao's foundation again, Xizhao would eliminate them on the spot, regardless of their family status.
Qian Jiu stressed that even Zhuo Wenyuan's intervention would be futile. Zhuo Wenyuan firmly stated that Sang Qi was his bottom line and no one was permitted to harm her. Qian Jiu reminded him that ensuring their cooperation was her mission and that if such a day came, they might find themselves at odds. Zhuo Wenyuan reiterated his seriousness regarding Sang Qi, concluding their conversation abruptly.
To prepare for the upcoming imperial examination, Yan Yunzhi and the scholars introduced a set of new, stringent rules at the Imperial College. Students were dismayed, complaining about the harshness of the regulations, which included extended study hours, daily quizzes, mandatory group exercise, and strict penalties for distractions or rule-breaking. Many students felt the new rules were "inhumane" and lamented Yan Yunzhi's return.
Despite the improvements in student performance, Yan Yunzhi clarified that education was not merely about achieving good grades or fame. He explained that the true purpose of the Imperial College, as taught by him and the scholars, was to cultivate students who first understood propriety and then served the common people. He shared his own experience, noting that achieving an official designation was just the beginning of a long and challenging path.
He urged the students to use the knowledge and principles learned at the Imperial College to remain steadfast in their original aspirations, especially when facing confusion. As the imperial examination approached, Zhuo Wenyuan sent a specially prepared set of writing materials to Sang Qi via Lian Pian, hoping she would use them and promising to wait for her at the examination hall entrance.
However, Sang Qi informed Lian Pian that she already possessed writing materials and would not be changing them, subtly implying she would use the set given to her by Yan Yunzhi earlier. On the day of the exam, Sang Qi's father encouraged her, telling her not to force herself if she wanted to stop. Before entering the hall, Zhuo Wenyuan approached Sang Qi, boldly declaring his intent to be the top scholar to demonstrate his capabilities.
Students and anxious onlookers, including Sang Qi's father, awaited the candidates outside the examination hall. Scholars Feng and Huo Cheng congratulated students on their performance. Zhuo Wenyuan confidently reported his "normal performance." Other students shared their experiences, with Yan Yan expressing satisfaction, while another student jokingly doubted Yan Yan's chances even with an "extraordinary performance." An older student intervened, reminding the bickering pair about the preciousness of their camaraderie before entering official careers. When Sang Qi finally emerged, Yan Yunzhi noted her downcast expression, asking if she had not performed well.
Episode 18 Recap
Following Yan Yunzhi's return to the Imperial College and his and Sang Qi's mutual confession of affection, the much-anticipated imperial examination concluded. Students gradually emerged from the examination hall, but Sang Qi was nowhere to be seen. Yan Yunzhi, growing concerned, rushed in to check on her. He found Sang Qi walking slowly with her head down, which deepened his worry.
Sang Qi confessed that she felt peculiar; despite having studied relentlessly before the exam, the moment she submitted her paper, she felt utterly drained, both physically and mentally. Although her imperial examination was now over, for Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi, everything was just beginning. Despite the examination's end, the students were reluctant to return home. Noticing this, Yan Yunzhi suggested they go out to celebrate its successful completion. Following Yan Yan's proposal, they all promptly headed to Qingfeng Restaurant.
There, Qian Jiu, the proprietress, welcomed them and offered a toast to the students, wishing them success in the examination. She specifically toasted Zhuo Wenyuan, acknowledging his likely success. Yan Yan echoed this sentiment, remarking that even Qian Jiu recognized Zhuo Wenyuan as the most promising candidate. This exchange made Sang Qi uneasy, worrying that if she had not performed well, she might hinder Yan Yunzhi’s future.
Yan Yunzhi quickly interrupted her, asserting before everyone that simply giving their best effort was sufficient. He explained that for the students, this examination was an opportunity to assess their learning and, more pragmatically, a stepping stone to their future careers.
He added that His Majesty was also evaluating his own performance as Deputy Chief of the Imperial College, hinting playfully that if he couldn't retain his position, it would be partly their responsibility, a remark that startled everyone before they chuckled in relief. During the celebration, several female attendees pressed drinks upon Yan Yunzhi, who appeared uncomfortable and gently pushed away the offered cups. Sang Qi observed from the side, initially unconcerned and even a little amused.
However, seeing his discomfort, she quickly interceded, taking a wine cup from a woman's hand and drinking it herself. Standing behind Yan Yunzhi, Sang Qi declared that anyone wishing to toast him should direct their offer to her instead. After Sang Qi's bold declaration, Yan Yunzhi, emboldened, openly admitted that he indeed had a woman in his heart. He described her as neither gentle nor demure, nor graceful nor virtuous.
Instead, she was lively, uninhibited, and playful—completely unlike the typical well-bred young lady. Yet, he stated, it was precisely "this" Sang Qi whom he loved, shocking everyone present. Yan Yan, unable to contain himself, exclaimed that he had been holding in this secret for ages. After the banquet, Yan Yunzhi personally escorted Sang Qi home. Sang Qi instinctively mentioned seeing him again tomorrow at the Imperial College, but then her expression fell as she realized her studies there were ending.
Lian Pian, noticing her mistress's melancholy, suggested Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi take a walk to aid digestion. She also reminded Sang Qi that the vesting ceremony would take place after the exam results were announced, marking Sang Qi's official graduation from the Imperial College.
Sang Qi expressed her earnest hope to be on the list of successful candidates, not just as the first female student of the Imperial College, but aspiring to be the first female official in the imperial court. Yan Yunzhi affirmed her ambition, then added a more personal note, promising to propose to her at the Grand Commandant's Residence after the vesting ceremony. The day for the results' announcement arrived, filling Yan Yan with anxiety, but Sang Qi remained hidden.
Overwhelmed by fear, Sang Qi hesitated to check the list herself, instead confiding her thoughts to her deceased brother's portrait. Despite her apprehension, she resolved to face the outcome. As she stepped out, she heard that the list was surrounded by a massive crowd, which almost made her turn back, fearing public humiliation if she had failed. Unable to wait any longer, Yan Yan swiftly pulled her along.
As expected, Zhuo Wenyuan secured the top position, First Class first place, and Yan Yan also found his name on the list, earning Third Class 20th place and awarded Jinshi's Parentage (Equivalent). However, after a long search, Sang Qi's name remained elusive. Both Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi were visibly anxious, with Yan Yunzhi pacing restlessly. Seeing Sang Qi's crestfallen demeanor, Yan Yunzhi tenderly offered comfort.
To his surprise, Sang Qi suddenly looked up, exclaiming that she had passed with Second Class 18th place, awarded Jinshi's Parentage. Overjoyed, Yan Yunzhi embraced Sang Qi and spun her around joyfully. Sang Qi playfully admitted she had wanted to "return the favor" for all the times he had surprised her. Yan Yunzhi noted her progress in both studies and wit, attributing it to his tutelage.
Later, Sang Qi accidentally bumped into Song Jiayin on the street, leading to an immediate verbal sparring match. Zhuo Wenyuan, witnessing the exchange, rolled his eyes and systematically refuted Song Jiayin's accusations on Sang Qi's behalf. He then invited Sang Qi to Qingfeng Restaurant, but she declined, stating her father was waiting for her at home. As Sang Qi walked away, Zhuo Wenyuan was lost in thought, recalling a past incident where he was cornered by thugs.
Fortunately, Sang Qi had appeared just in time, bravely subduing the assailants. Their shared past, though beautiful, had been fleeting, and a sense of loneliness filled Zhuo Wenyuan’s eyes. Regarding the matter of Sang Qi's Jinshi status, Yan Yunzhi fervently argued with Grand Tutor Song. The discussion, however, centered on Yan Yunzhi's plea to His Majesty to expand the Imperial College's recruitment of female students, citing Sang Qi's success as proof of their capability.
Grand Tutor Song vehemently opposed this, arguing it would disrupt centuries of tradition, while Yan Yunzhi countered that no rule explicitly forbade it and public opinion had turned positive after Sang Qi's achievement. His Majesty, deciding the matter was not for them to settle, declared Yan Yunzhi's proposal worthy of discussion. He then acknowledged the upcoming vesting ceremony, entrusting Yan Yunzhi with the responsibility of overseeing the significant event where scholars would transition from academia to officialdom.
The vesting ceremony proceeded smoothly. As the scholars looked back at the Imperial College, they were filled with emotion. Sang Qi reflected on her journey, from her arrival in Bianjing over a year ago to her adaptation to life at the Imperial College. Now, being told she no longer needed to report daily or study, she felt a strange emptiness.
During the ceremony, Zhuo Wenyuan was recognized as First Class first place, Meng Zhu as Second Class 16th place, Yan Yan as Third Class 20th place, and Sang Qi as Second Class 18th place. Yan Yunzhi offered them words of caution and encouragement, reminding them to seek his help if they faced difficulties, and promising to stand by Sang Qi. A few days later, Zhuo Wenyuan met Sang Qi on the outskirts of Bianjing.
He revealed a surprise: Rui Xue, the horse Sang Qi cherished from her childhood, which her father had left behind after it fell ill. Zhuo Wenyuan had specifically sought out her father to bring the horse back as a gift to celebrate her success. He also presented her with her old childhood bow, inviting her to go hunting like they used to. Finally, Zhuo Wenyuan confessed his long-standing feelings for Sang Qi.
He recalled how, when stranded in the frontier as a child, only she treated him with fairness, and how their continued correspondence made her his sole friend in Bianjing. He then recounted his deliberate actions to be close to her, from transferring classes to assisting her publicly and supporting her on the mountain, all driven by his affection and desire to protect her. He then explicitly confessed his love for her.
Episode 19 Recap
Zhuo Wenyuan finally confessed his feelings to Sang Qi, telling her he had always wanted to marry her. He explained that when he was exiled to the frontier as a child, she was the only one who treated him as an equal, and her letters were his sole comfort in Bianjing, making her his only friend. He admitted that he knew she and Yan Yunzhi were in love, but his feelings for her were his own affair.
As he spoke, he tightened his grip on his bow and shot a wild rabbit. Sang Qi then aimed her bow to the side, remarking that even the best hunter needs prey to succeed, and that their childhood bow, however good, was no longer suitable for them as adults.
She returned the bow to Zhuo Wenyuan, gently but firmly telling him that her heart belonged only to Yan Yunzhi and that he should not waste his time on her, lest they lose their friendship entirely. Zhuo Wenyuan, feeling that Sang Qi had left him no other choice, threw the bow down in frustration. Upon Sang Qi's return, Yan Yunzhi playfully feigned anger, demanding to know what she had discussed with Zhuo Wenyuan.
Sang Qi found his act amusing and, leaning in, kissed him. Delighted, Yan Yunzhi immediately spoke of his eagerness to propose to the Sang family soon.
Later that night, Sang Qi confided in her late brother Sang Yu's portrait, excitedly detailing her plans with Yan Yunzhi: their wedding at the Imperial College where they first met and which held great significance for her brother, a banquet for her maiden family at the frontier fortress, and how they would name their many children, with some taking her surname and others his. Her face beamed with happiness and anticipation, her eyes curving into crescent moons.
Unbeknownst to her, her father, Grand Commandant Sang, was secretly listening nearby, growing increasingly agitated. Grand Commandant Sang, already aware of Yan Yunzhi’s close friendship with his son Sang Yu, was now confronted with an even deeper connection between Yan Yunzhi and his family. He sought out Yan Yunzhi directly, unequivocally stating his disapproval of the marriage.
While grateful for Yan Yunzhi’s assistance in helping Sang Qi participate in the imperial examination, Grand Commandant Sang explained that as she was his only daughter, he would not tolerate her suffering any hardship. He emphasized his need for an in-law who could fully protect her. Yan Yunzhi, though surprised, stood firm in his resolve to marry Sang Qi, promising to persevere until he gained approval.
With the imperial examination concluded, Yan Yan felt confident enough to confide in his mother about his romantic feelings. However, Madam Yan misinterpreted his intentions, mistakenly believing he was in love with Sang Qi. She promptly prepared lavish gifts, intending to propose to the Sang family on his behalf. Meanwhile, Grand Commandant Sang, also under a misapprehension, believed that Yan Yan and Lian Pian shared feelings for each other.
Overjoyed at this prospect, he declared that if the Yan family consented, he would formally add Lian Pian to the Sang family genealogy. But then, recalling Yan Yunzhi's unwavering determination from earlier, Grand Commandant Sang's expression hardened, and he instructed his retainers to prevent anyone from entering the residence. Despite Grand Commandant Sang's orders, Lian Pian, seeing Madam Yan's visit, quickly welcomed her into the mansion.
Grand Commandant Sang was initially pleased, until Madam Yan revealed that her son's intended bride was Sang Qi. The revelation stunned everyone present, leaving them bewildered as to why Madam Yan would suddenly seek Sang Qi's hand for Yan Yan. Observing their reactions, Madam Yan belatedly realized that her son’s affections lay with Lian Pian. Her smile instantly faltered, and she coldly reprimanded Yan Yan. Grand Commandant Sang was dissatisfied with both marriage proposals that day.
One family, the Yan family, had rushed to propose, immediately pressing their marriage letter into his hand upon entry. The other suitor, Yan Yunzhi, was Chancellor Yan’s son from a concubine, and even Chancellor Yan himself was somewhat distant to his own son, let alone a future daughter-in-law. Later, Lian Pian felt disheartened by Madam Yan’s harsh words but acknowledged the kindness shown to her by Grand Commandant Sang and Sang Qi.
Elsewhere, Madam Yan, still fuming, confined Yan Yan to their residence, forbidding him from stepping outside, intending to find him a more suitable bride. Yan Yan however, defiantly asserted that Lian Pian was not a "lowly woman" but a proper young lady. Sang Qi, discussing the day's events with Yan Yunzhi, assured him she wasn't anxious about their delayed proposal, confident that he would still marry her, and he promised not to keep her waiting.
Sang Qi then tried to reason with her father about Yan Yunzhi, pointing out his "obnoxious" personality mirrored their own. Grand Commandant Sang however, praised Zhuo Wenyuan for his thoughtfulness in comparison. Noble Consort Zhuo, Zhuo Wenyuan's aunt, encouraged him to pursue Sang Qi despite her public relationship with Yan Yunzhi, asserting that without parental consent and a proper procedure, their bond was not unbreakable. She suggested he use his cleverness to separate them.
Later, Zhuo Wenyuan found Su Jieyu at Qingfeng Restaurant, noting her apparent loneliness and expressing a sense of shared predicament. He candidly asked why she remained fixated on Yan Yunzhi, given Yan Yunzhi’s consistent aloofness and his now public relationship with Sang Qi. Su Jieyu recounted a childhood memory: at age eight, while playing hide-and-seek blindfolded in the garden, she stumbled and grabbed onto someone, only to discover it was Yan Yunzhi.
He had gently led her away, lifting his head only when they reached the eaves, explaining later that he had saved her from falling into a thorny patch of Chinese roses that could have seriously injured her. Zhuo Wenyuan dismissed this as mere common courtesy, suggesting she would have developed feelings for anyone who helped her. He concluded that Yan Yunzhi clearly did not love her.
Nevertheless, he proposed an alliance, stating his desire to keep Sang Qi for himself, and asking if she still wished for Yan Yunzhi. He suggested that if she couldn't win his heart, she could first secure his presence, believing that shared meals and beds would eventually lead to a deeper connection. After Yan Yunzhi had been ambushed at the border of Jingzhou and Official Wei assassinated, Yan Yunzhi and Yan San Lang began an investigation.
When they arrived at Official Wei’s residence, they found it had already been thoroughly searched. However, nearby villagers reported seeing a man, posing as a merchant selling Official Wei’s belongings, frequently entering and exiting the house. They correctly identified him as a spy from Xizhao. Following this lead, Yan Yunzhi and Yan San Lang tracked the spy to a Xizhao stronghold on the outskirts of the city.
The stronghold was filled with Xizhao’s unique, poisonous plants, the same kind from which the substance that had once poisoned Sang Qi was extracted. They apprehended a guard who claimed he was only responsible for guarding and transporting smuggled salt. Yan Yunzhi deduced that the operation involved trading smuggled salt for these toxic Xizhao plants, an illicit enterprise meticulously planned and executed by a powerful mastermind, far beyond the capabilities of the Wei family.
Yan Yunzhi noted a strange, unpleasant odor in the air that was irritating his nose, while Yan San Lang seemed unaffected, finding the smell pleasant. Realizing Yan Yunzhi was being affected by the plants, Yan San Lang urged him to rest. Yan Yunzhi instructed Yan San Lang to secure the warehouse and collect evidence, confirming it was the Prefecture Court's duty.
Soon after, Zhuo Wenyuan received news that the warehouse had been sealed and its contents confiscated, though critically, the ledger had not been found. His subordinates were instructed to be extremely cautious and avoid the warehouse area. Zhuo Wenyuan also learned that Yan Yunzhi’s marriage proposal to Sang Qi had been rejected. Following this, Su Jieyu visited Madam Yan, Yan Yunzhi’s mother, claiming she wanted to chat and brought her snacks.
She mentioned that Yan Yunzhi was out of the residence due to the issuance of the orders for the imperial examination. Madam Yan expressed surprise, having been unaware that Yunzhi had already gone to the Grand Commandant’s Residence to propose. During her visit, Su Jieyu quietly contemplated the advice she had received from Zhuo Wenyuan about getting close to Yan Yunzhi physically to eventually win his heart.
Episode 20 Recap
Yan Yunzhi receives the appointment list, noting Zhuo Wenyuan's prestigious appointment as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Personnel. He internally acknowledges Sang Qi's absence from the list, though he had anticipated it. At a celebratory banquet he prepared with fruit wine, Yan Yunzhi ensures Scholar Feng will not interrupt the students. Fellow students congratulate Zhuo Wenyuan on his top performance and new appointment, with one student humorously vowing to stay on Zhuo Wenyuan's good side.
The conversation then turns to Yan Yunzhi, praising his teaching and mentioning his recent marriage proposal to the Sang family, suggesting he's achieving both career and personal success. Zhuo Wenyuan interjects, asserting that the proposal failed and that even if it hadn't, engagements and marriages can be annulled or dissolved, advising against overly confident pronouncements. Yan Yunzhi inquires about Sang Qi's whereabouts from Yan Yan, who explains he is drinking to gather courage rather than drown sorrows.
Yan Yan admits he's trying to embolden himself to visit Lian Pian at Grand Commandant Sang's Residence, having used the celebration as an excuse to leave home. Yan Yunzhi advises him that drinking won't solve problems and that he needs to think carefully and persevere in his promise to bring Lian Pian happiness. Song Luo Tian then mocks Yan Yan for being tipsy, leading to a brief, sharp exchange between them about their respective achievements.
Sang Qi arrives with Lian Pian, initially feigning cheerfulness. Lian Pian, noticing Sang Qi's true feelings, offers to cheer her up with a celebration. Lian Pian expresses her admiration for the Imperial College, understanding why Sang Qi's brother wanted her to study there, though she dismisses the idea for herself as a servant due to her status. Sang Qi, however, encourages her, believing that more women, including Lian Pian, will eventually study there.
Their spirits are dampened as they overhear other students discussing Sang Qi's lack of appointment, rationalizing that His Majesty had already been generous by allowing her to study and wouldn't permit her to be an official. The students also gossip about Yan Yunzhi's alleged failed proposal and Yan Yan's connection to Lian Pian, implying ulterior motives from the Sang family. Upset by the gossip, Lian Pian pulls Sang Qi away. Inside, Sang Qi brightens, asking why everyone looks dejected.
Fellow students express frustration that Sang Qi, despite her high scores, received no appointment, calling it unfair compared to those with lower marks who were appointed. Sang Qi, resolving not to give up, asserts that she deserves the same opportunities as others, boldly declaring that as the first female student of the Imperial College, she can also become the dynasty's first female official. Yan Yunzhi immediately pledges his unwavering support to help her secure her rightful appointment.
Zhuo Wenyuan also offers his assistance through his upcoming position in the Ministry of Personnel. Yan Yunzhi curtly reminds Zhuo Wenyuan to focus on his own duties as a new official, asserting he is sufficient to help Sang Qi. Later, while Yan Yunzhi escorts Sang Qi home, he senses her lingering unhappiness. Sang Qi admits her disappointment, explaining she hoped that studying at the Imperial College would change societal views on women.
Despite her efforts, she feels controlled, citing her unappointed status and Madam Yan's harsh treatment of Lian Pian as examples. She reveals her deepest desire: to return to the Imperial College, even in a minor role, to teach and dismantle prejudices against women's education, realizing this was her brother's true intent. Yan Yunzhi, after much consideration, decides to seek an audience with His Majesty.
He petitions the Emperor to grant Sang Qi an official position, arguing that it is only right for her to serve the court given her meritorious exam performance. He also emphasizes that Sang Qi, as the first female student of the Imperial College, becoming a female official would set a remarkable precedent, benefiting the Emperor's reputation for promoting education. His Majesty, weighing the benefits, agrees to Yan Yunzhi's request, suggesting the role of Archivist at the Imperial College.
Yan Yunzhi, moved by her revelation, vows to secure her appointment, even risking his own position as Director of Imperial College, emphasizing that her success as a female official would be the most powerful example for women's education. Yan Yunzhi, planning to surprise Sang Qi with good news, instructs Bai Shi to help him feign disappointment.
Before leaving for Sang Qi's residence, Bai Shi informs him that Su Jieyu has been frequently visiting Yan Yunzhi's mother, engaging in long, cheerful conversations. Yan Yunzhi's mother then confronts him about his unauthorized proposal to Sang Qi, expressing strong disapproval of Sang Qi. Yan Yunzhi defiantly states he would rather establish his own household than forgo marrying Sang Qi.
Upon arriving at Sang Qi's residence, Yan Yunzhi apologetically pretends he failed to secure her appointment as Manager of the Archive. Sang Qi, initially worried, quickly reassures him that the matter is already resolved, thanks to Zhuo Wenyuan, who used his connections in the Ministry of Personnel to secure the position for her. Hearing Zhuo Wenyuan's name, Yan Yunzhi's expression hardens.
Zhuo Wenyuan then enters, stating that Sang Qi's happiness is paramount and there's no need to discuss who gets credit. He emphasizes his sincere, selfless intent in helping Sang Qi. Yan Yunzhi, visibly irritated by Zhuo Wenyuan's words, abruptly takes his leave, surprising Sang Qi. Later, Yan Yunzhi confronts Su Jieyu about her frequent visits to his mother, implying she may have disclosed his proposal to Sang Qi.
Su Jieyu implies she did, stating her romantic feelings for Yan Yunzhi ended upon hearing of his proposal to Sang Qi. However, as a friend, she expresses concern about his initial, unceremonious proposal, stressing the importance of the "Three Letters and Six Rites" and a formal letter of proposal. She then mentions snacks for Madam Yan in her carriage and asks Yan Yunzhi to have Bai Shi help Zhuo Wenyuan retrieve them, subtly linking Zhuo Wenyuan to her presence.
Yan Yunzhi agrees. As Bai Shi is about to leave, Zhuo Wenyuan arrives at Yan Yunzhi's residence, and Sang Qi arrives with him. Sang Qi questions Su Jieyu's presence, who states she was visiting Yan Yunzhi's mother. Sang Qi, about to leave, asks Su Jieyu for a ride, wanting to chat with her. In the carriage, Sang Qi apologizes to Su Jieyu, acknowledging her feelings for Yan Yunzhi but stating that love cannot be forced.
Su Jieyu retorts that she knew Yan Yunzhi first, implying priority in love. Yan Yunzhi arrives at Grand Commandant Sang's Residence with a formal letter of proposal and bridewealth, asking for Sang Qi's hand in marriage. Sang Qi tries to prompt her father to accept. However, Zhuo Wenyuan arrives simultaneously, also presenting a marriage proposal. Grand Commandant Sang, seemingly favoring Zhuo Wenyuan, teases him about his timing.
Both Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi attempt to intervene as Grand Commandant Sang considers Zhuo Wenyuan's proposal, with Yan Yunzhi reminding him of his established love with Sang Qi. Zhuo Wenyuan counters, claiming his deep understanding of Sang Qi from their shared upbringing and asserting his right to pursue her, appealing to Grand Commandant Sang's apparent favor and the importance of parental consent. Sang Qi firmly declares she will decide her own marriage.
Exasperated, Grand Commandant Sang proclaims the Sang family will settle the matter by their ancient rules. He playfully engages Sang Qi in a mock fight, which Yan Yunzhi tries to break up. Grand Commandant Sang then stops the charade, announcing a public "duel for marriage" at the Sang Residence, inviting any eligible young man to compete for Sang Qi's hand.
Yan Yunzhi later explains to Bai Shi that a public contest avoids rumors of favoritism and aligns with the Sang family's martial tradition of favoring the strong. Grand Commandant Sang also publicly adopts Lian Pian as his daughter. Yan Yunzhi confidently tells Sang Qi that Zhuo Wenyuan is no match and she will be his wife. Zhuo Wenyuan, in turn, vows to win. Grand Commandant Sang emphasizes that the duel is their chance to prove their determination.
Zhuo Wenyuan reiterates his resolve to fight for Sang Qi, regardless of her feelings for Yan Yunzhi. Sang Qi expresses concern about them fighting. As the event is about to commence, Song Luo Tian arrives, dramatically accusing Sang Qi of causing Yan Yunzhi to fight and warning her of consequences if he gets hurt. Sang Qi dismisses her, commenting on her overly strong perfume.
Grand Commandant Sang then declares that if no other challengers come forward, Yan Yunzhi and Zhuo Wenyuan will proceed to the final duel, just as Song Luo Tian from the Song family is announced as a challenger.
Episode 21 Recap
At the martial arts tournament, Sang Gong declared that the winner of the duel between Yan Yunzhi and Zhuo Wenyuan would marry Sang Qi. Song Jiayin, furious at the prospect, urged her brother Song Luotian to challenge Zhuo Wenyuan instead, despite Sang Qi's protests that Song Luotian was already married and shouldn't interfere. Yan Yunzhi, eager to proceed, called for the match to begin.
As Sang Gong initiated the contest, Zhuo Wenyuan immediately launched a fierce offensive, leaping towards Yan Yunzhi. Yan Yunzhi deftly parried Zhuo Wenyuan’s flying kick and swiftly evaded further attacks. Zhuo Wenyuan continued his relentless assault while Yan Yunzhi remained on the defensive. Lian Pian, observing from the side, found it amusing, expecting grand declarations of love before the fight, but instead witnessing an immediate, silent clash.
Zhuo Wenyuan, growing increasingly frustrated by Yan Yunzhi's constant defense, intensified his attacks, feeling disrespected. Yan Yunzhi finally shifted to offense, delivering a powerful blow to Zhuo Wenyuan’s stomach. Though clearly in pain, Zhuo Wenyuan recovered and resumed his furious attacks, but ultimately fell. As he lay on the ground, Zhuo Wenyuan suddenly produced a hidden weapon. Yan Yunzhi, with quick reflexes, dodged it just in time, but Sang Qi’s heart tightened as she watched.
Yan Yunzhi swiftly ended the fight, throwing Zhuo Wenyuan out of the ring. Sang Gong stepped onto the platform, raised Yan Yunzhi's hand, and declared him the victor. The crowd erupted in cheers, and Sang Qi joyfully embraced Yan Yunzhi. Zhuo Wenyuan, still recovering, asked Yan Yunzhi what he would have done if he had lost and had to give up Sang Qi.
Yan Yunzhi confidently asserted that failure was impossible, as he firmly believed he was the only one who could truly care for Sang Qi. After the contest, Yan Yan rushed forward to congratulate them. Lian Pian, worried about Madam Yan’s reaction, urged him to go home. However, Yan Yan dramatically announced that Madam Yan had disowned him and he intended to marry into the Sang family. He then bowed to Sang Gong, loudly addressing him as "Father."
Overwhelmed, Sang Gong feigned illness and quickly fled the scene. Meanwhile, Zhuo Wenyuan returned home where his aunt, concerned about his loss in the duel, advised him against being emotional. She suggested he consider marrying Song Jiayin to strengthen their family’s alliance with Grand Tutor Song, ensuring greater influence and stability.
Later, Yan Yunzhi discussed a significant clue with Sang Qi: they had both detected the same unique Xizhao spice on Song Jiayin that Yan Yunzhi had smelled in the warehouse days earlier. Song Jiayin herself had claimed this spice, brought by her father Grand Tutor Song, was exclusive to Bianjing, thus directly linking the Song family to the illegal goods.
At the Prefecture Court, Yan San Lang was analyzing the case with Yan Yunzhi when Yan Yan and Song Luotian began bickering loudly about their newly assigned positions. Yan Yunzhi devised a plan to subtly use Song Luotian to investigate the Song family. Yan San Lang presented a batch of seized Xizhao plants, tasking both Yan Yan and Song Luotian with identifying and documenting them within a strict timeframe.
Song Luotian's visibly confused reaction indicated his unfamiliarity with the plants, confirming Yan Yunzhi's suspicion that he was unaware of his family's illicit activities. Yan Yunzhi concluded that prematurely dismissing Song Luotian would alert the Song family, and it was better to use him to gather information. Sang Qi, thrilled to be back at the Imperial College Archive, began organizing the books. She was surprised to find Zhuo Wenyuan there.
He claimed to be searching for an official register, but he lingered, attempting to engage her and asking if she would sever ties with him just because he lost the duel. Sang Qi tried to politely dismiss him, but he remained. As night fell and Sang Qi dozed off from exhaustion, Zhuo Wenyuan approached her quietly. She awoke just as he leaned closer, quickly sitting upright.
When they tried to leave, they discovered the Archive door had been locked from the outside. Unbeknownst to Sang Qi, this was orchestrated by Zhuo Wenyuan himself. Concerned by Sang Qi's absence from her residence, Yan Yunzhi went to the Imperial College. Finding the main gate secured with a complex serial lock, he forcefully kicked it open and rushed inside. He found Sang Qi and Zhuo Wenyuan.
Yan Yunzhi directly confronted Zhuo Wenyuan, reminding him that he had won the duel and Sang Qi was now his fiancée, sternly warning him against further boundary-crossing. Yan Yunzhi then took Sang Qi into his arms. Sang Qi expressed that if he didn't want her alone with other men, he should also avoid being alone with other women. Yan Yunzhi, realizing his fault, responded that he was worried about her and should have better protected her from Zhuo Wenyuan's persistence.
Sang Qi then quickly explained that Zhuo Wenyuan was there on official duty. Yan Yunzhi, while trusting Sang Qi, expressed his annoyance at Zhuo Wenyuan constantly "pestering" her and declared his intention to marry Sang Qi sooner to prevent such situations from recurring. To further prevent Zhuo Wenyuan from having solitary opportunities with Sang Qi, Yan Yunzhi enacted a new policy: the Imperial College Archive would now be open to the entire city, including women, for study.
He privately explained this was a strategic move to gradually accustom the Imperial College community to the presence of women, paving the way for future female student enrollment, a long-held dream of Sang Qi and her late brother. The Archive quickly became a bustling hub, filled with eager readers. Yan Yunzhi noted that Sang Qi's busy schedule would keep her preoccupied, and Zhuo Wenyuan would be deterred from bothering her in public.
Despite the increased crowd, Yan Yunzhi’s aide pointed out that Sang Qi was now attracting attention from many other men. Yan Yunzhi initially appeared jealous but quickly rationalized it as concern for Sang Qi’s workload, to which Sang Qi reassured him of her unwavering affection. Hearing the news, Song Jiayin, determined to meet Yan Yunzhi and assert her future role as his wife, arrived at the Imperial College dressed in ostentatious attire, causing a commotion.
Before entering, she told her aide that she needed to remind Yan Yunzhi of her status and overpower Sang Qi as the Archive's curator. She immediately called out Sang Qi's name. When Sang Qi politely suggested her noisy accessories were disturbing others, Song Jiayin accused her of jealousy, asserting her right to be there as anyone could enter. As Song Jiayin refused to leave and challenged Sang Qi to forcibly remove her, Zhuo Wenyuan intervened, lifting Song Jiayin and carrying her out of the Archive.
Episode 22 Recap
At the Imperial College Archive, Song Jiayin caused a disturbance, publicly displaying her resentment towards Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi. She defiantly refused to leave, even challenging Zhuo Wenyuan to physically remove her. Zhuo Wenyuan, taking her up on her dare, lifted her. He sternly informed her that while he generally favored women, he made an exception for those who troubled Sang Qi or disrespected the Archive's etiquette.
He then attempted to put a hairpin on her, but his expression turned cold as he noticed a familiar scent on her, urging her to return home quickly. Nevertheless, he later offered to escort her home. Upon their arrival at the Grand Commandant's Residence, Zhuo Wenyuan engaged in a private conversation with Grand Tutor Song.
He subtly warned Grand Tutor Song that the family was under scrutiny, particularly regarding aromatics purchased from a recently confiscated warehouse, implying it was a trap set by Yan Yunzhi. Meanwhile, Song Jiayin found herself conflicted, weighing Zhuo Wenyuan, the impressive top scholar who treated her kindly, against Yan Yunzhi, whom she had previously considered the only man worthy of her. Elsewhere in the Imperial College, discussions arose among students about the rare opportunity for commoners to enroll.
However, these quickly turned into complaints about Sang Qi, a female Librarian, whom they accused of gaining entry solely due to her status as the Grand Commandant's daughter, dismissing the "opening to the public" initiative as merely a means to benefit influential families. Sang Qi, stopping Yan Yunzhi from intervening, calmly stepped forward. She acknowledged her family's privilege in her admission but firmly stated that her official rank was earned through her own diligent efforts.
To prove her competence, she challenged her detractors to a test within the Archive. Despite the vast collection of books, Sang Qi demonstrated her profound knowledge by precisely locating "Laozi Zhi Gui" and further recommending a complementary text, 'He Shang Gong Zhang Ju', thereby effectively silencing her critics. Sang Qi further elaborated on her position, explaining that while her family background played a part, she faced far more criticism and harshness than others.
She clarified that the "opening to the public" initiative was not a mere gimmick but a genuine effort to foster fairness and allow all students to study without excessive scrutiny or external judgment. Her eloquent defense resonated with the students, earning their respect and causing the initially anxious Yan Yunzhi to relax and smile with satisfaction. He praised her for her rational and effective counter-argument.
Sang Qi playfully credited his guidance for her success and teased him, saying that her praise elevated his value as the person she liked, thereby showcasing her own discernment. Pleased, Yan Yunzhi left, vowing to bring honor to her.
As the Eighth Day of the Eighth Month, Yan Yunzhi's birthday, approached, he was embarrassed to directly tell Sang Qi, so he instructed Yan Yan to 'unintentionally reveal' his birthday to her, emphasizing that the message must be delivered "word for word." However, Yan Yan, upon encountering Lian Pian at the Grand Commandant's Residence, became sidetracked by her insistence that he clean his messy room, and completely forgot to deliver Yan Yunzhi’s crucial message.
On the day of his birthday, Yan Yunzhi arrived at the Grand Commandant's Residence, expecting a celebratory feast. To his dismay, Sang Qi clarified that the elaborate meal was Lian Pian’s effort to celebrate Yan Yan's one-month stay at their household. Later that evening, under the soft moonlight, Sang Qi sensed Yan Yunzhi's unspoken disappointment.
She then revealed that she had known about his birthday all along and presented him with a meticulously crafted embroidery, a product of many late nights spent learning the craft from Lian Pian. Yan Yunzhi was genuinely touched by the gift. Sang Qi playfully admitted to deliberately feigning ignorance as a form of "payback" for his own fondness for setting traps and teasing others, calling it "a taste of your own medicine."
Their tender moment was abruptly interrupted by a servant bearing dire news: the Prefecture Court had raided the Yan Residence, and the Grand Preceptor, along with others, had been arrested. Rushing to the sealed Yan Residence, they found Yan Yan and Lian Pian already there, equally confused and desperate for answers. Yan Yunzhi, seeing Prefectural Court official Yan San Lang, allowed the arrests to proceed, expecting an explanation later.
Yan San Lang subsequently explained that his investigation, initially targeting the Song family based on clues related to a confiscated warehouse, goods from Xizhao, and Song Jiayin's unique fragrance, had taken an unexpected turn. He had apprehended a timid salt merchant named Ding Hao, who, without even being tortured, immediately confessed. However, Ding Hao inexplicably implicated the Yan family, claiming they had forced him to engage in illicit salt trade and sell official titles for the Grand Preceptor's Residence.
He even produced a detailed ledger, meticulously recording dates, amounts, and transaction partners. Yan Yunzhi immediately recognized this detailed record as a clear fabrication, knowing that illegal traders would never keep such transparent accounts. Despite his suspicions of a setup, Yan San Lang was obligated to report the confession to His Majesty, who promptly ordered the arrest of the Grand Preceptor and the sealing of the Yan Residence.
Yan Yunzhi deduced that the Song family must have discovered their investigation and hastily framed the Yan family. To swiftly prove the Yan family's innocence, Sang Qi requested to interview Ding Hao, even though he had already confessed and could not be subjected to further torture. Sang Qi then devised a cunning plan to manipulate Ding Hao.
She entered the same prison cell as him, where she dramatically feigned extreme distress and the effects of torture, raving about a terrifying and untraceable torture method called "suffocation" involving paper and water. She convinced Ding Hao that she, too, was unjustly arrested due to her association with the Yan family. When Yan Yunzhi entered the cell with a stern demeanor, Sang Qi exaggeratedly reacted with terror, pretending to resist as guards led her away, all for Ding Hao's benefit.
Yan Yunzhi then interrogated a terrified Ding Hao, making it clear that he was not interested in the salt smuggling itself but in obtaining enough evidence to definitively convict the Yan family. Under the immense psychological pressure and believing Yan Yunzhi to be relentless, Ding Hao, completely broken, finally agreed to confess everything he knew, starting with the fabricated ledger.
Episode 23 Recap
After a thorough interrogation, Ding Hao's hurried testimony was completely overturned as he began contradicting himself almost immediately and could not identify anyone from the Yan Residence other than Grand Preceptor Yan and Yan Yan. Witnessing this, Yan San Lang confirmed he had meticulously recorded every detail, now having sufficient grounds to request His Majesty to reassess the Yan family's case. The final outcome, however, still awaited His Majesty's decision, expected within a few days.
As night fell, a gentle rain mirrored the unease in Yan Yan's prison cell. To his surprise, Lian Pian, accompanied by Sang Qi, Yan Yunzhi, and Yan San Lang, arrived to visit him. Seeing Lian Pian's concern, Yan Yan quickly reassured her, asserting his innocence and promising his imminent release. He declared his clear intention to marry Lian Pian officially upon his freedom, even if it meant facing his mother's wrath.
Lian Pian, overjoyed yet selfless, confessed that his safety was paramount to her, even if it meant no formal status. Their tender exchange prompted Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi to express lighthearted discomfort, but the prison guard rudely interrupted, ordering everyone to leave. To their astonishment, the guard's true purpose was to open Yan Yan's cell. Relieved and overjoyed, they quickly departed the prison, with Yan Yan thanking them for their assistance.
Yan Yan affirmed that only Grand Commandant Sang and Yan San Lang were still advocating for his family's case, while others shied away. He resolved to leverage his own network to continue the investigation into his family's plight. Seeing his renewed spirit, Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi were relieved. Lian Pian decided to stay at the Yan Residence to keep Yan Yan company, aiding him in the lonely and deserted compound.
Meanwhile, Noble Consort Zhuo was infuriated by Yan Yan's release. She chided Zhuo Wenyuan for their sloppy handling of the Yan family's case, clarifying that the Yan family was merely a means to an end; the real objective lay elsewhere, and all loose ends needed to be cleanly severed. She then mentioned a rumor that Song Jiayin was publicly proclaiming herself Zhuo Wenyuan's rightful wife. Zhuo Wenyuan quickly denied this, explaining it was Song Jiayin's own doing.
Noble Consort Zhuo, however, saw an advantage, noting that the Song family rivaled the Sang family in court influence and had been close allies. Marrying Song Jiayin would solidify the Song family's support. Zhuo Wenyuan, however, viewed the Song family as opportunistic, unreliable "fair-weather friends," expressing his discomfort with their alliance and preferring cooperation with the Sang family.
Noble Consort Zhuo sternly dismissed this, reminding him how Sang Qi had complicated their plans and commanded him to set aside his personal feelings. Zhuo Wenyuan requested another chance with Sang Qi, but his aunt retorted that Sang Qi had made her desire to be with Yan Yunzhi clear. Later, Yan Yunzhi found Sang Qi asleep, her exhaustion evident from the Yan family's ordeal. He gently woke her and took her on a boat ride to relieve her stress.
As they enjoyed their time together, evening fell, and under the gentle moonlight, they embraced, gazing at the stars. Their playful banter continued, with Sang Qi feigning annoyance and rising, only for Yan Yunzhi to pull her back down, their closeness veiled by the soft glow of the moon. The tranquility was shattered by the sudden news that Grand Commandant Sang had been arrested by His Majesty.
Yan Yan explained that while he was with Grand Commandant Sang in his residence discussing strategies, imperial soldiers arrived with a decree and took him away. Sang Qi was distraught, unable to comprehend why her father, who had only pleaded for the Yan family without overstepping boundaries, would anger His Majesty. Yan Yunzhi deduced that the arrest was specifically targeting Grand Commandant Sang, unrelated to the Yan family's original case.
Sang Qi, desperate, sought help from Yan San Lang, who informed them that Grand Commandant Sang was held directly in the Heavenly Prison by His Majesty's order, making intervention difficult. Grand Preceptor Yan, though in the Prefecture Court's prison, was also under strict imperial watch. Yan Yunzhi proposed that Yan San Lang and Yan Yan attempt to visit Grand Preceptor Yan, while he and Sang Qi would seek an audience with His Majesty.
Their attempt to see His Majesty was rebuffed by palace officials, who stated His Majesty was busy. Yan Yunzhi, seeing Sang Qi's distress, convinced her to get some food at Qingfeng Restaurant, hoping to gather information. There, they were met with hostility. The restaurant staff, and then Song Jiayin, refused to serve them, citing Grand Commandant Sang's arrest for a serious offense, possibly treason.
Song Jiayin openly declared Sang Qi "bad luck" and boasted about getting the entire restaurant to "chase her out." When Zhuo Wenyuan later arrived, he chastised Song Jiayin for her reckless actions, warning her about the unpredictable nature of His Majesty's stance on the Sang family and the potential for Sang Qi to retaliate against the Song family. Sang Qi managed to visit her father in prison.
Grand Commandant Sang had no clues, stating the arrest was sudden, right after a seemingly positive discussion with His Majesty about the Yan family's case. He was unaware of any betrayal by Grand Preceptor Yan. Later, Yan Yan received shocking news from his father, Grand Preceptor Yan: a familiar individual had accused Grand Commandant Sang, and that person was Wei Zhan Hong.
The revelation stunned everyone, as Wei Zhan Hong was presumed dead after falling off a cliff during an ambush. Sang Qi recalled that while she witnessed Official Wei's death that day, Zhuo Wenyuan claimed to have seen Wei Zhan Hong jump. Despite official searches failing to find his body, the case was closed, declaring him deceased. His sudden reappearance as a witness, implicating the Sang family, indicated a clear conspiracy.
It became imperative to find Wei Zhan Hong to confront him and clear Grand Commandant Sang's name. However, Yan San Lang confirmed that Wei Zhan Hong's return was highly secretive, with the Prefecture Court having no prior knowledge, and the case was now out of their jurisdiction. He was certainly being kept hidden. Realizing the urgency, they decided to split up and search for Wei Zhan Hong.
Yan Yunzhi theorized that a mastermind knew Wei Zhan Hong was alive, rescued and concealed him, and then strategically brought him back to provide false testimony against Grand Commandant Sang. He found it perplexing why Wei Zhan Hong would align with Xizhao to harm the Sang family, whose father was killed by Xizhao. He concluded that finding Wei Zhan Hong would inevitably lead them to the hidden manipulator.
Sang Qi attempted to gather information by inviting scholars to a gathering, subtly inquiring about Wei Zhan Hong's whereabouts, but yielded no results. The scholars only recalled the tragic fates of the Wei, Yan, and Sang families. Yan Yunzhi also reported no success in his city-wide search; even after checking with Song Luotian and secretly monitoring the Song Residence, he found no leads. With no leads, Sang Qi realized one person might know: Zhuo Wenyuan.
At the Zhuo Residence, only Sang Qi was permitted entry, despite Yan Yunzhi's presence. Yan Yunzhi cautioned her to be careful. Zhuo Wenyuan welcomed Sang Qi warmly, attempting to show her around his estate and express his long-standing affection. However, Sang Qi cut to the chase, demanding answers about her father. Zhuo Wenyuan admitted he could secure Grand Commandant Sang's life, though not his official post, and while he denied having Wei Zhan Hong, he insisted he had "his ways."
He then revealed his condition: as an "outsider," he could not interfere unless Grand Commandant Sang became "family." He explicitly demanded Sang Qi marry him to save her father. Sang Qi vehemently refused, reminding him of her father's kindness to him when he was young and questioning how he could have changed so drastically. She accused him of holding her father's life hostage.
Zhuo Wenyuan countered that he had done so much for her, yet she always prioritized Yan Yunzhi, who only brought her trouble and danger. He insisted that only he could truly protect her and her family, and that she would eventually realize he was the best match for her. He rejected her plea for mere friendship and left her to decide her father's fate.
Distressed by Zhuo Wenyuan's obsessive demand, Sang Qi confided in Yan Yunzhi that she believed Zhuo Wenyuan was connected to Wei Zhan Hong, as only Wei Zhan Hong's recantation could overturn the case. She expressed her regret at even seeking Zhuo Wenyuan's help, having feared such a connection. Yan Yunzhi comforted her, vowing to find Wei Zhan Hong and clear Grand Commandant Sang's name, assuring her that the case still had room for reversal.
Episode 24 Recap
Zhuo Wenyuan joyfully informed Noble Consort Zhuo that he was on the verge of bringing the Sang family under his control. However, Noble Consort Zhuo was displeased, questioning why he wasn't seizing the prime opportunity to completely eradicate the Sang family while Sang Wei, the Grand Commandant, was imprisoned.
Zhuo Wenyuan explained that Grand Commandant Sang Wei held significant prestige within the military, and even if he were removed, military power might fall into other hands, which would be detrimental to their own influence. He proposed a strategy: Sang Qi was Grand Commandant Sang's Achilles' heel and greatest weakness. By marrying Sang Qi, he could ensure that the Zhuo and Sang families would be inextricably linked, sharing both fortune and adversity.
Under such circumstances, Grand Commandant Sang would prioritize his daughter's safety and, out of concern, would be compelled to obey their commands. Noble Consort Zhuo, contemplating his words, then inquired about his certainty in the plan. Zhuo Wenyuan assured her that everything was prepared, needing only a catalyst, and requested her assistance.
Notices announcing Grand Commandant Sang Wei's impending execution for salt smuggling were plastered across every corner of Bianjing, sparking widespread disbelief among the populace who struggled to believe such accusations against a national hero. Imperial officials proceeded to clear out the Sang family residence, ordering Sang Qi and her remaining household to vacate within three days. Sang Qi sat in her courtyard, her gaze hollow and filled with despair. Yan Yunzhi rushed to her side, offering quiet words of comfort.
At that moment, Bai Shi arrived in a hurry, reporting that a royal decree had reached Yan Yunzhi's own residence, ordering a marriage between him and Su Jieyu. Hearing this, Yan Yunzhi stood abruptly, rushing home to address the matter. This news, however, only intensified Sang Qi's anguish, causing tears to involuntarily stream down her cheeks. Lian Pian was instructed by Yan Yunzhi to care for Sang Qi, and Yan Yan was tasked with guarding the Grand Commandant's Residence.
Upon Yan Yunzhi's return, his father questioned his delay, expressing disappointment at his lack of joy over the arranged marriage, which was a great honor. Yan Yunzhi's father intended to prepare gifts for a visit to the Su Residence, but Yan Yunzhi firmly stated he could not marry Su Jieyu, citing a more pressing matter. His family members questioned if he intended to defy the royal decree, emphasizing the gravity of such an act.
Yan Yunzhi, however, insisted that given Grand Commandant Sang's perilous situation, he could not stand idly by. He declared his intention to first clear Grand Commandant Sang's name before addressing the marriage. His father reminded him that the Grand Commandant's conviction was His Majesty's decision, not easily overturned, and that he himself had petitioned His Majesty on Grand Commandant Sang's behalf without success. Yet, Yan Yunzhi remained resolute, believing he could still create a turning point.
His father pointed out the suspicious timing of Grand Commandant Sang's conviction and Yan Yunzhi's sudden arranged marriage, suggesting it was a deliberate attempt to corner them. Sang Qi, after much deliberation, eventually sought out Zhuo Wenyuan, agreeing to his terms. Zhuo Wenyuan remarked on her arrival, jokingly suggesting she implied he orchestrated the entire situation, clarifying that as kin to Noble Consort Zhuo, he held no sway over His Majesty's decisions.
Observing her crestfallen expression, he subtly implied that Yan Yunzhi's reluctance to defy the royal decree indicated a shallow affection for her. Sang Qi, however, firmly stated that her heart belonged solely to Yan Yunzhi and that she would not allow him to risk defying the royal decree for her sake. She then directly asked Zhuo Wenyuan if he still wished to marry her, knowing her feelings.
He confirmed, stating that her past affections no longer mattered as long as she was by his side. Sang Qi then inquired if marrying him would ensure her father's freedom and Yan Yunzhi's safety. Zhuo Wenyuan affirmed this. With a heavy heart, Sang Qi agreed to marry him. Zhuo Wenyuan, overjoyed, promised never to disappoint her.
Sang Qi immediately pressed him to save her father, but he urged patience, promising to clear Grand Commandant Sang's name and return him home safely once they were married. Sang Qi sternly warned him against deceit, threatening severe repercussions. Zhuo Wenyuan feigned hurt, reminding her of his trustworthiness over their years of acquaintance. Sang Qi, left with little choice, agreed to trust him one more time.
He urged her to cheer up, as they were about to be wed, and offered to use his connections to prevent the confiscation of her family residence, promising a grand and honorable entry into the Zhuo family. Sang Qi, however, expressed her regret at ever having known him. Zhuo Wenyuan immediately instructed his servant to prepare the bridewealth and to closely monitor Sang Qi before the ceremony, reporting any unusual occurrences.
Whispers spread through the city about Zhuo Wenyuan's character, with many noting his surprising loyalty for marrying Sang Qi despite her family's downfall and her father's death sentence, a situation most others would avoid. People also wondered why Yan Yunzhi, who had previously been betrothed to Sang Qi, was not intervening.
They concluded that His Majesty's arranged marriage to Su Jieyu prevented Yan Yunzhi from defying the decree, though some remarked on the suitability of Yan Yunzhi and Su Jieyu as a pair. Song Jiayin, deeply frustrated, felt Sang Qi deliberately thwarted her at every turn, first with Yan Yunzhi and now with Zhuo Wenyuan. She openly questioned Sang Qi's appeal, noting Zhuo Wenyuan's seemingly enchanted devotion, and scoffed at the extravagant preparations for a criminal's daughter.
When Song Jiayin encountered Sang Qi, she confronted her, accusing her of consistently stealing her desired suitors. Sang Qi, burdened by her own troubles, initially tried to ignore Song Jiayin. However, as Song Jiayin persisted, Sang Qi, seeing an opportunity to use Song Jiayin, suggested they move their discussion to a more private location. Lian Pian intervened, but Sang Qi told her to wait, indicating she would handle Song Jiayin.
Meanwhile, Yan Yan attempted to enter the Grand Commandant's Residence but was blocked by guards under Zhuo Wenyuan's orders, who stated no outsiders were permitted until the wedding. Yan Yan argued his close ties to the Sang family, insisting on entry. Lian Pian intervened, advising Yan Yan not to cause further distress for Sang Qi, who was already in a foul mood.
Yan Yan inquired if Sang Qi was truly marrying Zhuo Wenyuan, to which Lian Pian confirmed Sang Qi's lack of options, lamenting that the Yan family's predicament had inadvertently implicated Sang Qi. Yan Yan expressed his concern for Sang Qi's well-being. Later that night, Sang Qi visited Yan Yunzhi at the Imperial College. She subtly reminded him of her impending marriage the following day and the need for them to maintain proper boundaries.
Yan Yunzhi, dropping his sword, rushed towards her, but Sang Qi deliberately stepped back, creating a palpable distance. He expressed his heartache, recalling his oath made at Sang Yu's tomb to protect Sang Qi throughout his life. He declared he could not remain passive while Grand Commandant Sang was unjustly imprisoned and Sang Qi was coerced into marriage by Zhuo Wenyuan. Yan Yunzhi insisted he would face any future difficulties with her and refused to let her go.
He then challenged Sang Qi to a sword duel, proposing that the winner could demand a favor from the loser. He offered to let her leave if she won, but insisted she follow his instructions if she lost, promising to fight without holding back. Sang Qi pleaded with him, reiterating her belief that she had no other choice. Yan Yunzhi countered that he was willing to break into prison or even sacrifice his own life for her.
Sang Qi, however, rejected his offer, stating she could not live without her father and felt utterly trapped with no other path. She urged him to forget about her. Deeply intoxicated, Yan Yunzhi stumbled to Yan Yan's residence late that night. Yan Yan opened the door and helped his inebriated friend inside. At the Zhuo Residence, the atmosphere was festive, adorned with "Double Happiness" decorations.
A servant reported to Zhuo Wenyuan that Sang Qi appeared resigned to her fate, while Yan Yunzhi was utterly drunk, likely not to recover by the wedding. Zhuo Wenyuan instructed his staff to remain highly vigilant, keep a close watch on both Yan Yan and Yan Yunzhi, and also monitor Yan San Lang, to prevent any unforeseen disruptions or attempts to distract from the wedding.
The next morning, Sang Qi, resplendent in her elegant wedding gown, prepared to board the sedan chair. Her face, however, bore a detached indifference rather than the typical joy of a bride. As the wedding procession began, Bianjing buzzed with excitement. Yan Yunzhi dramatically intercepted the sedan chair, publicly exposing Zhuo Wenyuan's manipulative schemes. Zhuo family guards attempted to restrain Yan Yunzhi, but he forcefully pushed them aside.
Zhuo Wenyuan, having anticipated such a move, signaled, and several highly skilled martial artists emerged, surrounding Yan Yunzhi. Despite being struck repeatedly by their staffs, Yan Yunzhi steadfastly refused to yield. He desperately called out to Sang Qi, imploring her to remember their shared vows and to reconsider her choice. Nevertheless, the sedan chair continued its journey past him. Meanwhile, Yan Yan was apprehended while attempting to create a diversion at the Grand Commandant's Residence.
Prefecture Court officers accused him of trespassing and violating regulations. He was arrested despite his claims of being on official duty. Zhuo Wenyuan then addressed Yan Yunzhi, suggesting he join the wedding celebration if he was there to offer congratulations, and urged him to maintain decorum on his wedding day. Yan Yunzhi accused Zhuo Wenyuan of using underhanded tactics to coerce Sang Qi into marriage.
Zhuo Wenyuan denied the accusation, asserting that Sang Qi had consented to the union, and dismissed Yan Yunzhi's claims as the ramblings of an intoxicated man, ordering his men to remove Yan Yunzhi. Yan Yunzhi made a final attempt to pull Sang Qi from the sedan chair, repeatedly urging her to come with him and questioning her willingness to marry Zhuo Wenyuan.
A servant then reported to Zhuo Wenyuan that the "thugs" (Yan Yan's group) who had attempted to infiltrate the residence had been driven away by their guards, confirming Zhuo Wenyuan's suspicion that Yan Yunzhi's actions were merely a diversion. Zhuo Wenyuan then gloated over Yan Yunzhi's failed plan, telling Sang Qi that she could now peacefully become his wife. He then questioned Yan Yunzhi about how he should be punished for his repeated interferences.
Grand Tutor Song, Song Jiayin's father, intervened, advising Zhuo Wenyuan against violence on his wedding day. Zhuo Wenyuan relented, sparing Yan Yunzhi due to their past teacher-student relationship, and vowed to care for his wife. The sedan chair then continued its journey. At the Zhuo Residence, Zhuo Wenyuan expressed his long-awaited desire for this day, acknowledging Sang Qi's potential resentment but expressing hope that she would eventually understand his deeper intentions. He then promised a life of harmonious marriage.
Eagerly, he lifted the bride's red veil, only to discover it was Song Jiayin, not Sang Qi. Song Jiayin greeted him as "husband," proclaiming herself his destined wife and celebrating their newfound union. Zhuo Wenyuan, in a state of frantic disbelief, demanded to know Sang Qi's whereabouts. Song Jiayin calmly explained that Yan Yunzhi's attempt to stop the carriage had been the happiest moment of her life, as she relished the attention from both Zhuo Wenyuan and Yan Yunzhi.
She revealed that the bride swap had occurred in front of the Grand Commandant's Residence and feigned ignorance of Sang Qi's current location. Meanwhile, Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi were interrogating Wei Zhan Hong. Wei Zhan Hong, acknowledging his capture, expressed his readiness to die, claiming he had achieved his vengeance against his father's killers, whom he believed were soldiers who had killed his father during Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi's pursuit to Jingzhou.
He defiantly boasted about making Sang Qi experience the anguish of a broken family. Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi then revealed to him the true identity of his father's killers: Xizhao forces, and that he had merely been a pawn in a larger scheme. Wei Zhan Hong initially denied this, but was pressed to reconsider who truly benefited from his father's demise. He was then offered leniency if he revealed the full truth.
Wei Zhan Hong confessed he did not know the ultimate mastermind; his father had never mentioned any contacts. He had been kept isolated after his rescue, unable to see the faces of those who provided his food. He revealed that he was instructed to find a former classmate in Bianjing for assistance and chose Zhuo Wenyuan due to his high official rank, having distrusted Song Luotian.
He admitted to only telling Zhuo Wenyuan that he would expose salt smugglers, not that he intended to falsely accuse Grand Commandant Sang. Yan Yunzhi inquired if Zhuo Wenyuan was indeed unconnected to the deeper conspiracy, to which Wei Zhan Hong confirmed, suggesting Zhuo Wenyuan, newly appointed to officialdom, had simply made an eager mistake.
As a final piece of information, Wei Zhan Hong divulged the existence of a secret ledger his father had hidden before his exile, which might contain crucial clues. He offered to lead them to its location and pleaded for His Majesty's mercy. At the Zhuo Residence, Grand Tutor Song attempted to smooth over the situation regarding Song Jiayin, admitting he had spoiled his daughter.
He stated that since Zhuo Wenyuan had brought Song Jiayin to his residence in such a pompous manner, she could not simply be sent back, as it would cause him to lose face in the imperial court. He also mentioned Noble Consort Zhuo's previous intention to arrange a match between Zhuo Wenyuan and Song Jiayin, suggesting they seize the opportunity to strengthen their family ties. He promised to prepare Song Jiayin's dowry.
A servant then informed Zhuo Wenyuan that His Majesty had summoned Wei Zhan Hong for interrogation and that Noble Consort Zhuo requested Zhuo Wenyuan's immediate presence in the palace. In the Imperial Study, Wei Zhan Hong reiterated to His Majesty and Yan Yunzhi that he did not know the identity of the mastermind. He confirmed his isolation after his rescue and his inability to see the faces of those who provided his food.
He stated he was instructed to seek help from a former classmate in Bianjing, choosing Zhuo Wenyuan due to his official rank, and admitted to only informing Zhuo Wenyuan about exposing salt smugglers, not about framing Grand Commandant Sang. Yan Yunzhi again asked if Zhuo Wenyuan was truly unconnected, to which Wei Zhan Hong affirmed, suggesting Zhuo Wenyuan, being new to officialdom, might have acted out of eagerness.
Wei Zhan Hong also disclosed the existence of his father's secret ledger, hidden before exile, offering to lead them to its location. He then pleaded for His Majesty's clemency. His Majesty ordered Wei Zhan Hong to be held in the Prefecture Court under Yan Yunzhi's supervision. Yan Yunzhi was instructed to retrieve the ledger, verify its contents, and release Grand Commandant Sang immediately if he was found innocent. Yan Yunzhi accepted the order and then requested a favor regarding the arranged marriage.
Episode 25 Recap
Following the exposure of Wei Zhan Hong's false accusations against Grand Commandant Sang, His Majesty ordered Wei Zhan Hong’s apprehension and transfer to the Prefecture Court for thorough investigation. Yan San Lang was given full authority to oversee the case, including the interrogation and custody of Wei Zhan Hong. Yan Yunzhi and Sang Qi then seized the opportunity to request that His Majesty revoke the imperial marriage bestowal.
However, His Majesty declared that the marriage was a grace bestowed upon Su Jieyu, and any alteration would first require her consent before he would consider it. After leaving the palace, Yan San Lang, still somewhat perplexed by the revelations concerning Wei Zhan Hong, immediately sought clarification from Yan Yunzhi and Sang Qi about the entire scheme.
Yan Yunzhi, seeing Sang Qi burdened with worry over her father’s predicament, promised her that he would find a way to save Grand Commandant Sang. He assured her that even if His Majesty insisted on the marriage bestowal, he would never separate from her. Sang Qi, unwilling to see Yan Yunzhi defy a royal decree and face punishment, suggested a risky strategy.
Yan Yunzhi initially expressed reluctance to put Sang Qi in harm's way, but she vowed to return safely, convinced that careful planning would ensure their success. Their immediate task was to locate Wei Zhan Hong, whose trail had vanished across Bianjing. They suspected he might be hidden within Zhuo Residence.
Sang Qi recalled her previous visit to Zhuo Wen Yuan’s mansion, where she had noticed an unusual number of highly skilled guards for a civil official’s home, leading her to believe they were either protecting someone important or guarding against something. Yan Yunzhi, ever cautious, speculated that Zhuo Wen Yuan might have deliberately orchestrated this observation to lure Sang Qi into a trap. With no other options, they decided to take the risk.
Thus, Yan Yunzhi and Sang Qi devised a meticulous plan to deceive Zhuo Wen Yuan, making him believe his schemes had succeeded and Sang Qi was cornered. Upon her second entry into Zhuo Residence, Sang Qi meticulously observed the courtyard layout, noting guards stationed at the back entrance and a maid delivering food, which led her to deduce that Wei Zhan Hong was likely concealed in the backyard.
She then sought out Song Jiayin, planning to exploit Song Jiayin's feelings for Zhuo Wen Yuan to facilitate a switch. Sang Qi shrewdly reminded Song Jiayin that in the pursuit of love, the means were secondary to the outcome. When Song Jiayin hesitated, Sang Qi provoked her, threatening to marry Zhuo Wen Yuan herself, which would relegate Song Jiayin to the status of a mere concubine. This infuriated the proud Song Jiayin, who quickly agreed to help.
Aware that Zhuo Wen Yuan was constantly monitoring them, Yan Yunzhi and Sang Qi orchestrated a dramatic farewell scene the night before the wedding. This served two purposes: it appeased Zhuo Wen Yuan’s suspicions, and it allowed Sang Qi to discreetly pass Yan Yunzhi a map of Zhuo Residence along with the evacuation routes for their operation.
On the wedding day, Yan Yunzhi directed Yan Yan to stage a feigned attack on Zhuo Residence, while Bai Shi pretended to infiltrate, distracting the guards. Yan Yunzhi himself intercepted the wedding procession, buying crucial time. As the bride's palanquin moved, no one noticed a woman, Sang Qi, sneaking into the mansion. Inside, with the help of an unknown accomplice, Sang Qi successfully extracted Wei Zhan Hong.
After hearing the detailed account, Yan San Lang applauded their cleverness, jokingly suggesting they could become famous actors. Just then, Zhuo Wen Yuan appeared. Yan Yunzhi, gripping Sang Qi’s hand, walked past him with composure. Zhuo Wen Yuan then openly confessed his fault to His Majesty, stating he had been misled by Wei Zhan Hong, whom he had trusted as a former schoolmate.
Noble Consort Zhuo seized the opportunity to plead for leniency for her nephew, emphasizing his youth and loyalty. His Majesty, moved by her plea, pardoned Zhuo Wen Yuan. Later, Noble Consort Zhuo sternly chastised Zhuo Wen Yuan for the trouble caused by "the daughter of the Sang family." She also noted that Song Jiayin's presence in Zhuo Residence could be leveraged to bind the Song family to them.
With things coming to this pass, Noble Consort Zhuo chillingly revealed the true circumstances of Sang Yu’s death. She explained that Sang Yu had accidentally seen something incriminating on a list from an apothecary. Concluding that "only dead men can keep secrets," she had him eliminated. Zhuo Wen Yuan was deeply shaken by this revelation, but with the irreversible turn of events, he felt he had no choice but to continue down his chosen path.
Yan San Lang successfully located the ledger, but a group of black-clad assassins suddenly emerged from the woods. Fortunately, Yan Yunzhi had anticipated this and had Yan Yan secretly stationed in the area. The attackers, being desperate men, committed suicide rather than be captured. Despite this, Yan San Lang, with the aid of the ledger, uncovered a suspicious land transaction involving an apothecary where Sang Yu had purchased medicine before his death.
The apothecary had changed hands multiple times, eventually falling under Wei Zhan Hong’s name. The ledger indicated a seller named Zhang Xiu Ping, who was nowhere to be found in official records. Yan Yunzhi and Sang Qi quickly went to the Archive to investigate, where Scholar Feng, after some reluctance, identified "Zhang Xiu Ping" as Madam Zhang, the proprietor of Qingfeng Restaurant, recalling an old acquaintance with the same name.
They discovered that Madam Zhang had recently moved into Zhuo Residence as an attendant to Qian Jiu, indicating a connection to Western Zhao. They decided to observe Madam Zhang closely, hoping she would make a move that would provide more evidence. Meanwhile, Qian Jiu expressed her frustrations to Zhuo Wen Yuan.
She recounted secretly escorting Wei Zhan Hong back, expecting Zhuo Wen Yuan to use him as a bargaining chip to secure Sang Qi's marriage and then facilitate Grand Commandant Sang's release. However, Zhuo Wen Yuan's failure to marry Sang Qi and Wei Zhan Hong's confession of the ledger had put their Western Zhao operatives in Bianjing at risk.
Qian Jiu felt that Zhuo Wen Yuan cared only for Sang Qi and had shown no genuine loyalty to their cause, suggesting he merely viewed Wei Zhan Hong as a means to his personal end. Separately, Qian Jiu reported to her superior that the attempt to retrieve the ledger had failed.
Her superior then expressed concern about Zhuo Wen Yuan's reliability, fearing that with his new position in the Ministry of Personnel and his alliance with the Song family, Western Zhao might become expendable. The superior also implicitly warned Qian Jiu about her growing personal attachment to Zhuo Wen Yuan. Separately, Yan Yunzhi faced personal pressure regarding his imperial marriage. His mother urged him to set a wedding date with Lan, the woman His Majesty intended him to marry.
While Lan politely stated she had no intention of rushing him, Yan Yunzhi firmly rejected the notion of marriage with her. He declared that he would only marry Sang Qi and urged Lan not to waste her time on him. He then quickly left, claiming an urgent matter in the case. Yan Yunzhi and Sang Qi reviewed the ledger. While it contained the record of the apothecary land transaction, it offered no other immediate useful clues.
However, they were relieved that the ledger did not implicate Grand Commandant Sang, suggesting his release was imminent. Despite the limited direct evidence, Yan Yunzhi expressed confidence that this single land transaction, combined with further strategic planning, could be used to expose Western Zhao by luring their leadership out into the open.
Episode 26 Recap
Qian Jiu approached Zhuo Wenyuan, anxious about the Prefecture Court's recent actions and seeking his immediate strategy. Zhuo Wenyuan, however, remained composed, instructing her people to lie low and wait, confident that Yan Yunzhi lacked concrete evidence. Qian Jiu expressed deep concern for Xizhao's future, as the salt route had been stalled and the plantation trade ruined, threatening Xizhao's finances.
She reminded Zhuo Wenyuan that Xizhao had partnered with the Zhuo family for profit, but now that he had gained power in court, he had yet to fulfill his promises, which could upset Madam Zhang, the Xizhao leader. Zhuo Wenyuan stressed the need for extreme caution, warning that one wrong move could jeopardize their lives. Shortly after, Zhuo Wenyuan was visited by a woman he promptly punished for eavesdropping, asserting the rules of the Zhuo family.
He then sent her off with Qian Jiu, telling them to enjoy the wine she had brought. Meanwhile, Bai Shi reported to Yan Yunzhi that he had lost Madam Zhang, confirming she was a formidable opponent. Yan Yunzhi noted that their plan to follow her to other Xizhao hideouts had failed, but they could now utilize their autopsy findings from the Xizhao operatives. Yan Yunzhi and Sang Qi carefully examined the bodies of the deceased Xizhao operatives.
They deduced that one was a musician, based on fingertips with hard calluses but smooth palms, and the scent of ambergris, a rare fragrance only used at Shuyu Hall in Bianjing. Another was identified as a cook due to their oily face, skin covered in herpes, palm calluses, and burns on the back of their hands, indicative of prolonged exposure to oil and fumes.
A third was believed to be a porter, given the marks and distinct indentations on their shoulders. Finally, a fourth operative was identified as a fisherman, with feet that appeared to have been soaked in water for extended periods, dry lips, and dark skin. Based on these findings, Yan Yunzhi instructed San Lang to make arrangements and ordered Yan Yan to gather men, leading to the successful raids on Xizhao's various hideouts across Bianjing and the capture of many operatives.
Overwhelmed by the escalating crisis, Qian Jiu confronted Zhuo Wenyuan again, stressing the immense danger posed by the captured Xizhao operatives potentially confessing to the Prefecture Court. She implored him to leverage his influence in court to help Xizhao overcome their predicament.
Zhuo Wenyuan refused, explaining that His Majesty had grown wary of him after the Wei Zhan Hong incident, and the Zhuo family would not risk further involvement, also adding that the information might be a trap set by Yan Yunzhi. Feeling Zhuo Wenyuan's cold indifference, Qian Jiu, frustrated, decided to report his refusal directly to Madam Zhang. Madam Zhang, unwilling to abandon her long-serving Xizhao people, decided to launch a jailbreak.
Qian Jiu offered to accompany her, but Madam Zhang refused, viewing Qian Jiu as family and instructing her to lead Xizhao should she perish. Zhuo Wenyuan, upon hearing of the plan, offered to create diversions across Bianjing to draw Prefecture Court guards away, thereby creating an opportunity for Madam Zhang to infiltrate the prison.
He also presented Qian Jiu with customs clearance documents, travel permits, money, and land deeds, urging her to leave Bianjing for her own safety, though his words left Qian Jiu feeling he was only concerned for his own self-preservation. As night fell, Zhuo Wenyuan's subordinate confirmed the Prefecture Court was in disarray as Xizhao forces prepared to move. Yan Yunzhi had already received intelligence about a mob fight, a diversion created by Zhuo Wenyuan's men.
Madam Zhang led her forces in the prison break, but Yan Yunzhi and his forces were well-prepared and swiftly ambushed them. The Xizhao attackers were quickly overwhelmed. As Prefecture Court officers attempted to capture Madam Zhang alive, a mysterious black figure appeared and shot her with an arrow, killing her. The black-clad woman who intervened in the skirmish was subsequently captured and revealed to be Qian Jiu.
Sang Qi questioned Qian Jiu in her cell about her brother Sang Yu's death. Qian Jiu initially remained silent but eventually revealed that Sang Yu had accidentally acquired a secret Xizhao letter containing a name list at an apothecary. Although Xizhao later retrieved the list, they had to eliminate Sang Yu to prevent any future complications, as he had seen its contents.
Sang Qi suspected Zhuo Wenyuan's involvement, but Qian Jiu denied it, stating that her relationship with Zhuo Wenyuan was merely a pretense and held no genuine affection. Later, Zhuo Wenyuan, disguised as a guard, secretly visited Qian Jiu in her cell. He gently pushed back a strand of hair from her face, expressing regret that she had returned, implying she should have used the escape route he provided. Qian Jiu asked if he harbored any lingering affection for her.
Zhuo Wenyuan, without directly answering, stated he did not wish for her to endure endless interrogation, then left a plate of poisoned pastries on her cot before departing. Subsequently, Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi visited Qian Jiu, offering her an opportunity to confess and assist the court in exchange for a possible reprieve. However, Qian Jiu simply ate the poisoned pastries Zhuo Wenyuan had left for her.
She spoke about her life, revealing that she was trained in killing and deception since childhood, never experiencing genuine kindness until "he" appeared. Sang Qi tried to press her on whether "he" was Zhuo Wenyuan, but Qian Jiu suddenly coughed up blood and died, the poison taking effect. It was later confirmed that the poison was not from Xizhao, and its source remained elusive.
Yan Yunzhi concluded that the person Qian Jiu had so fiercely protected had, in fact, orchestrated her death. With the Xizhao group in Bianjing entirely apprehended, His Majesty acknowledged Yan Yunzhi and Sang Qi's efforts in resolving the Xizhao threat. Although Zhuo Wenyuan was interrogated by Official Yan regarding his suspected involvement with Xizhao, he skillfully deflected the accusations, and due to a lack of direct evidence, His Majesty did not pursue the matter further.
Yan Yunzhi noted that the marriage decree involving Sang Qi remained valid. Sang Qi was relieved that her father was released and her brother's case was finally closed. In the aftermath of the crisis, Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi shared a peaceful moment together, kneading dough in the courtyard, with Yan Yunzhi embracing Sang Qi from behind.
Episode 27 Recap
Sang Qi diligently prepared pastries for her father, Grand Commandant Sang, to enjoy upon his return. Yan Yunzhi, observing her efforts, offered to help, even attempting to learn the intricate art of kneading dough from her. As they worked, Yan Yunzhi expressed his hope for a future where their lives together would always be as harmonious and domestic as that moment.
Their sweet interaction was interrupted by the sudden arrival of Yan Yan, who explained that his father, Grand Preceptor Yan, wished to personally thank Grand Commandant Sang for his righteous intervention on behalf of the Yan family, but being unwell, had sent Yan Yan in his stead. Soon after, Grand Commandant Sang returned, looking visibly thinner. He warmly thanked Yan Yunzhi for tirelessly working on his case and for helping clear Sang Yu's name.
Sang Qi, however, playfully chided her father for a light pat on Yan Yunzhi's arm. Grand Commandant Sang then retired to rest, inviting them to share a drink later, while Yan Yunzhi departed with Yan San Lang. Outside the family gathering, Yan Yunzhi immediately broached the topic of Zhuo Wenyuan with Yan San Lang, noting that the incidents involving Xizhao and Qian Jiu clearly demonstrated Zhuo Wenyuan's meticulous and vicious nature.
He anticipated more trouble from Zhuo Wenyuan and resolved to continue his investigation. Yan San Lang, sharing the same concern, promised to keep a close watch on Zhuo Wenyuan and conduct a covert investigation. Crucially, they both agreed to keep Sang Qi in the dark about their efforts, vowing to immediately share any new clues and act together. Meanwhile, Noble Consort Zhuo expressed her relief that Xizhao had been eliminated, a long-standing concern of hers.
She admitted that she would have dealt with them herself, even if the Prefecture Court hadn't intervened. However, she voiced apprehension about the Prefecture Court's intention to delve deeper into the Xizhao case, fearing potential repercussions for herself. Zhuo Wenyuan calmly reassured his aunt, stating he had already handled the matter and that without solid evidence, the Prefecture Court would be unable to cause significant trouble.
Noble Consort Zhuo also mentioned His Majesty had reinstated Grand Commandant Sang to his former position and asked Zhuo Wenyuan how he planned to handle this development. Zhuo Wenyuan responded cryptically that "the show must go on." At the Imperial College, Sang Qi, Yan Yunzhi, and other scholars gathered to discuss the new enrollment regulations.
They unanimously agreed to expand admissions to students regardless of their background or status, and to establish a dedicated female class with the same curriculum and regular assessments as other classes, with results to be published alongside all other students. Their aspirations were cut short when Zhuo Wenyuan arrived with a retinue, announcing that the Ministry of Personnel had deemed the proposed new regulations inappropriate.
He argued that student enrollment should prioritize quality over quantity, that broad recruitment was unnecessary given the existing talent among Bianjing's official families, and that admitting female students was against established rules, labeling the entire proposal as whimsical. He instructed them to redraft the regulations. Though Sang Qi was visibly upset and wanted to challenge him, Zhuo Wenyuan simply stated he was merely relaying the Ministry's decision before promptly leaving. The scholars lamented the difficulty ahead.
Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi resolved to draft a more persuasive set of regulations. Yan Yunzhi then tasked Sang Qi with compiling historical examples of successful students from humble backgrounds and accomplished female scholars by the following morning, intending to use these records to further argue their case before the Ministry of Personnel. Later, Yan San Lang informed Yan Yunzhi of a tip-off that Zhuo Wenyuan was planning to meet an important figure outside the city that night.
Yan San Lang intended to take only a few trusted men to maintain secrecy. Fearing Zhuo Wenyuan's cunning, Yan Yunzhi insisted on accompanying him to prevent any unforeseen complications. That night, as they made their way to the informant's rendezvous point, Yan Yunzhi grew increasingly suspicious. He remarked that while his informant, a mere ruffian, was usually reliable, the informant's unusual certainty about having crucial evidence regarding a mastermind behind Xizhao felt like a trap.
Before Yan Yunzhi could elaborate further, they were ambushed by a group of masked assailants. During the chaotic confrontation, both Yan San Lang and Yan Yunzhi sustained injuries. The masked attackers relentlessly pursued Yan Yunzhi, driving him towards a cliff edge. As they fought, a pouch that Sang Qi had given to Yan Yunzhi slipped from his grasp and fell. Despite his valiant efforts, Yan Yunzhi was ultimately overwhelmed and pushed off the cliff.
When the imperial officers arrived at the scene, they found an unconscious and severely poisoned Yan San Lang, but Yan Yunzhi was nowhere to be found. A thorough search of the entire mountain yielded no trace of him, only the dropped pouch found by the river.
Sang Qi, upon hearing the news, was distraught and frantically joined the search, but after days of relentless searching, she was urged by officials to return to the Prefecture Court, as the extensive search along the river required more resources than they currently had. As if the disappearance of Yan Yunzhi wasn't enough, news then broke that Wei Zhan Hong had died in the Prefecture Court's prison, a facility known for its stringent security.
With Yan San Lang still unconscious and being treated by imperial physicians, His Majesty appointed Official Xiao from the Court of Judicial Review to temporarily serve as Governor of Prefecture Court. At this critical juncture, a surviving officer from the ambush had regained consciousness and was being interrogated. Sang Qi and Yan Yan rushed to the Prefecture Court and were horrified to hear the officer testify that Yan Yunzhi had betrayed them, injuring other officers and attacking Yan San Lang.
The officer even claimed Yan Yunzhi had declared himself to be one of Xizhao, saying things like, "You're too slow. You never investigate it," and warning Yan San Lang, "You know too much." Sang Qi vehemently challenged the officer's testimony, pointing out inconsistencies and arguing that such actions were completely out of character for Yan Yunzhi, a loyal friend to Yan San Lang and a diligent investigator of her brother's death.
Faced with Sang Qi's sharp questioning, the officer feigned a severe headache, claiming his injuries had affected his memory. Just as Sang Qi seemed to gain the upper hand in the debate, Zhuo Wenyuan made a dramatic entrance, carrying a ledger. He claimed it had been found in Yan Yunzhi's study. Zhuo Wenyuan asserted that Yan Yunzhi's cooperation with Yan San Lang in investigating Xizhao was merely a ruse to monitor the investigation.
He produced a second ledger, stating that when cross-referenced with the one previously submitted by Wei Zhan Hong, it revealed a direct financial transaction where Yan Yunzhi had sold a plot of land to Official Wei. Zhuo Wenyuan claimed he uncovered this through Qian Jiu, who, despite being a Xizhao spy, had mentioned Yan Yunzhi's study multiple times during their close interactions.
He then painted a chilling picture: every time Yan Yunzhi was involved in a major case—from the Song family's tea plantation to Official Wei and the eventual Xizhao extermination—crucial clues mysteriously vanished. He argued that Yan Yunzhi's true purpose was not to eliminate Xizhao, but to help them cover their tracks and sow confusion within the imperial court.
Turning to Sang Qi, Zhuo Wenyuan cruelly suggested that all the "truth" she had learned came directly from Yan Yunzhi, implying she had been manipulated. Sang Qi adamantly dismissed his claims as mere speculation, clinging to the hope that Yan San Lang's awakening would expose the real truth. However, Official Xiao grimly informed them that Yan San Lang remained in a critical coma, his life sustained only by acupuncture and medicine, with no certainty of recovery.
With no other recourse, Official Xiao declared that they could not simply wait and decided to issue an arrest warrant for Yan Yunzhi, classifying him as a fugitive. Sang Qi protested fiercely, but her pleas fell on deaf ears as Official Xiao dismissed the court. Later, Sang Qi was found asleep in her room, clearly distressed. In her dream, Yan Yunzhi appeared, gently calling her name and whispering words of comfort.
She embraced him tightly, desperately asking where he had been. He told her not to rush, to rest well, promising he would return to her side once she recovered. Fearing it was a lie, she tightened her grip. Sang Qi awoke to find Lian Pian by her side, who told her she had been unconscious since her return the previous day due to severe exhaustion.
Sang Qi felt utterly lost, plagued by Yan Yunzhi's unknown fate, Yan San Lang's coma, and the overwhelming confusion of the situation. She yearned for guidance from her deceased brother, Sang Yu, but then suddenly fainted again. A physician, specially brought in, diagnosed Sang Qi with severe anxiety causing retrograde qi and blood flow, and unsettlingly, a "sign of toxin invading her body." Zhuo Wenyuan arrived to visit Sang Qi.
He tried to take the pouch that had been found near the cliff, reasoning that since Yan Yunzhi was gone, he would be the one to stay by her side. Sang Qi, however, remained cold towards him. After leaving her room, Zhuo Wenyuan spoke quietly with his subordinate, Jing Mu. Jing Mu confirmed that Yan San Lang had been "resolved," but Yan Yunzhi's body remained unfound after his fall from the cliff, with only the pouch recovered. Zhuo Wenyuan then instructed Jing Mu to retrieve a white porcelain bottle that Qian Jiu had left behind.
Episode 28 Recap
After Sang Qi, overwhelmed by anxiety and despair, fainted, a physician diagnosed her condition as severe melancholy, compounded by the presence of a toxin in her body. Zhuo Wenyuan was well aware of this, as he had orchestrated the poisoning. That night, after Yan Yun Zhi fell off a cliff, his personal pouch was found. Zhuo Wenyuan, in a fit of rage, decided to put a slow-acting poison from Qian Jiu into the pouch.
He then had it deliberately placed where Sang Qi would find it, wanting to ensure she kept it close, knowing that her deep attachment to Yan Yun Zhi would lead her to hold onto the pouch, thus accelerating the poison’s effect. Later, he attempted to retrieve the pouch from Sang Qi, but she clung to it fiercely and without hesitation, reaffirming her profound connection to Yan Yun Zhi.
Zhuo Wenyuan, noting that she was no longer the Sang Qi he once knew, declared that if he could not have her, Yan Yun Zhi would not either, vowing to remain by her side in the end. He also commanded his men to continue searching for Yan Yun Zhi, dead or alive, believing that Yan Yun Zhi knew too much and posed a significant threat. Days turned colder, yet there was no news of Yan Yun Zhi.
Su Jieyu, still worried about his uncertain fate and the charges against him, discussed her concerns with her brother, who remained optimistic. Meanwhile, Lian Pian noted the approaching Lantern Festival, reminding Sang Qi of how Yan Yun Zhi, dressed in white, had saved her from danger. Despite her fragile health, Sang Qi sought fresh air outside her residence.
It was then that Yan Yan arrived with grave news: Zhuo Wenyuan had replaced Yan Yun Zhi as the Deputy Chief of the Imperial College. Zhuo Wenyuan had initiated drastic changes, including a new rule requiring visiting cards for entry, effectively making the institution exclusive to those with certain backgrounds and wealth.
Furthermore, he had abolished many of the new regulations Sang Qi and Yan Yun Zhi had established and, citing "inappropriateness," removed Sang Qi from her position as Bibliographic Manager. Furious, Sang Qi immediately went to the Imperial College to confront Zhuo Wenyuan in what used to be Yan Yun Zhi's study. She demanded to know his intentions regarding her removal and the reinstatement of the old system that valued students’ backgrounds.
Zhuo Wenyuan claimed he acted out of caution, asserting that Yan Yun Zhi's years of infiltration and his motives for abolishing the status requirement were unclear, adding that His Majesty had approved these changes. Sang Qi insisted that opening the Imperial College to all was her brother Yu’s dying wish, but Zhuo Wenyuan dismissed it as something Yan Yun Zhi had told her, implying it could be a fabrication.
Desperate, Sang Qi asked what it would take for him to cease his actions. Zhuo Wenyuan then proposed a condition: if she would accompany him during the upcoming Lantern Festival, his mood might improve, and he might reconsider his decisions. After a moment of thought, Sang Qi agreed, stating that as long as he preserved her brother Yu’s final wish, she would abide by his wishes in the days to come.
Shortly after leaving the Imperial College, Sang Qi encountered Su Jieyu. Su Jieyu questioned Sang Qi's continued belief in Yan Yun Zhi amidst the prevalent city rumors. She then candidly confessed that she once harbored resentment towards Sang Qi, having grown up longing for a life with Yan Yun Zhi, whom she considered her ideal husband, a dream Sang Qi’s appearance had shattered.
However, upon reflection, Su Jieyu admitted she understood why she could never prevail against Sang Qi, acknowledging that Sang Qi and Yan Yun Zhi shared a profound bond forged through life-and-death experiences, making them interdependent. She confessed her envy for Sang Qi’s daring spirit and resilience, humbly deeming herself an ordinary woman despite her renowned title.
Sang Qi, in turn, offered words of comfort and encouragement, asserting that all ways of life are valid as long as one finds contentment, and expressed her belief that Su Jieyu would eventually find someone who truly loved her. Su Jieyu thanked her and offered any assistance Sang Qi might need. On the night of the Lantern Festival, the streets were brightly lit and bustling. Sang Qi walked with Zhuo Wenyuan, who attempted to buy her a kite.
While he was momentarily distracted, Sang Qi subtly slipped away. Suddenly, Yan Yun Zhi emerged from the shadows and pulled her into an alley. Sang Qi, initially overjoyed, was met with his furious gaze. He declared that he should now refer to her as "Madam Zhuo," accusing her of being a heartless woman who intended to marry Zhuo Wenyuan while he was presumed dead.
He scoffed, suggesting she no longer needed him after gaining fame and success upon leaving the Imperial College. Despite Sang Qi’s attempts to explain, Yan Yun Zhi refused to listen, vehemently stating he would never forgive her. As Zhuo Wenyuan and his men arrived, Yan Yun Zhi choked Sang Qi's neck and held her, using her as a hostage to escape.
Before fleeing, he mockingly advised Zhuo Wenyuan, as someone who had experienced betrayal, to reconsider his affection for such a "heartless woman." Left behind, Sang Qi sadly murmured, "He still doesn't believe me." Upon returning to her room, Sang Qi’s demeanor shifted from sadness to playful amusement as she confronted Yan Yun Zhi. She scolded him for his earlier "performance" in the alley, accusing him of using harsh words.
Yan Yun Zhi, now apologetic, admitted he had not controlled his force when he shoved her away. He then revealed the truth: after falling off the cliff, he was discovered and rescued by Grand Commandant Sang, who, while out for a walk and wishing for someone to "fall from the sky" with answers, found him and secretly brought him back for treatment.
Yan Yun Zhi also admitted he was the one who had closed the door on Sang Qi earlier when she was praying at her brother’s portrait. He explained his previous secrecy was due to the circumstances, and they both agreed he would no longer hide anything from her.
They then discussed their elaborate plan to expose Zhuo Wenyuan: Yan Yun Zhi's public appearance was a deliberate move to confirm their suspicion that Zhuo Wenyuan would mobilize forces from the Prefecture Court to capture him, thus leaving the court vulnerable for an attempt on Yan San Lang’s life. Yan Yun Zhi assured Sang Qi that his plan was foolproof.
Soon after, Zhuo Wenyuan arrived at Grand Commandant Sang’s residence with a contingent of men, claiming he was there on His Majesty’s orders to protect Sang Qi from Yan Yun Zhi, whom he asserted had attempted to kidnap her. Grand Commandant Sang, though angered by the intrusion, could not defy the imperial decree. Zhuo Wenyuan proceeded to Sang Qi’s room. Sang Qi, feigning sleep, told him she was fine and preparing for bed, making it clear she was unavailable.
As Zhuo Wenyuan was about to leave, he claimed to hear a noise and abruptly re-entered the room. Sang Qi coolly denied any sound and chastised him for inappropriately barging into her private chambers with his men. Zhuo Wenyuan then left, promising to guard her door all night. Once he was gone, Yan Yun Zhi, who had been hidden in the room, emerged. Recognizing their predicament, Yan Yun Zhi accepted that he would have to stay there for the night.
Lying together, they discussed their next moves. Yan Yun Zhi reiterated his plan: Zhuo Wenyuan would undoubtedly mobilize the Prefecture Court’s forces to capture him, creating a window of opportunity to target Yan San Lang. He revealed that he had already prepared Yan Yan to act as a decoy and that Yan San Lang was now safely under the protection of his Second Uncle, Yan He Xing.
They concluded that past grievances, such as Yu’s death, Xizhao’s involvement, or Yan San Lang’s previous injury, were insufficient to bring Zhuo Wenyuan down. Instead, they needed to focus on the salt route investigation, find evidence of his illegal salt dealings, and catch him red-handed. To achieve this, they would need to make Zhuo Wenyuan relax his guard.
Yan Yun Zhi quietly noted that this night might be their last together for a while, as Zhuo Wenyuan would soon realize his presence. Yan Yun Zhi’s prediction proved accurate. Zhuo Wenyuan’s attempt to assassinate Yan San Lang at the Prefecture Court failed; his men were ambushed, and the assassin, a loyal "dead man," took his own life after being captured, leaving no clues.
Yan Yan had indeed taken Yan San Lang’s place, and Yan San Lang himself was safely under the protection of Yan He Xing. Suspecting Yan Yun Zhi’s involvement, Zhuo Wenyuan ordered a thorough search of Bianjing, but Yan Yun Zhi remained elusive. Zhuo Wenyuan, having spent the previous night guarding Grand Commandant Sang’s residence without success, was increasingly frustrated.
His frustration peaked when his wife, Jia Yin, complained about a lost hairpin, only for it to be found in her own room after a thorough search. This seemingly minor incident prompted a sudden realization for Zhuo Wenyuan, who immediately ordered his men to return to Grand Commandant Sang’s residence.
Despite Grand Commandant Sang’s open annoyance and Sang Qi’s firm protests about his repeated intrusions, Zhuo Wenyuan insisted on a search, claiming to have received a tip-off that Yan Yun Zhi was hiding within the estate. However, after a comprehensive search of the entire residence, including Sang Qi’s room, his men reported no unusual findings, forcing Zhuo Wenyuan to finally depart. As he left, Sang Qi, exhausted, collapsed.
Episode 29 Recap
Sang Qi suddenly collapsed, unconscious, with the poison having clearly entered her vital organs. Zhuo Wenyuan, however, had no intention of finding an antidote, having never obtained one from Qian Jiu in the first place. He declared that there was no turning back for anyone. Zhuo Wenyuan then instructed Jing Mu to widely disseminate the news of Sang Qi's critical condition.
His plan was to lay a trap for Yan Yunzhi, hoping the news of Sang Qi's illness would compel him to appear. Despite the efforts of physicians, including one who admitted he could do nothing, and Miss Su, who noted Sang Qi's pulse was erratic and indicative of an unknown and peculiar poison, Sang Qi's health continued to decline.
Meanwhile, citizens in Bianjing lamented Sang Qi's fate, recalling her past brilliance in Imperial College and during festivals, now reduced to a mere "candle in the wind." A pale Sang Qi lay in bed, her vitality diminished. She looked at Zhuo Wenyuan and directly asked if he was responsible for her poisoning. Zhuo Wenyuan remained silent, his eyes reddened.
Sang Qi interpreted his silence as an admission, asserting that she knew her own body and that her current state was due to his actions. Zhuo Wenyuan then revealed that her constant thoughts of Yan Yunzhi and her wearing of the poisoned pouch were the cause of her illness. Sang Qi, despite believing he was not involved in her brother's death, questioned why he had framed her father and sought to kill her.
She demanded to know if he had forgotten their childhood affection. Zhuo Wenyuan became agitated, retorting that she was the one who had forgotten their past. He had tried everything to gain her attention, yearning for even a single glance, but she had always pursued Yan Yunzhi without looking back, forcing him to take these extreme measures.
Sang Qi countered that the Zhuo Wenyuan she knew was a gentleman and a virtuous youth, not someone who blamed others for his own wrongdoings after taking a wrong turn and making mistakes. Zhuo Wenyuan then vehemently denied Sang Qi's understanding of him, questioning if she truly understood or could empathize with him. He reminded her that she, as the Grand Commandant's daughter, had grown up carefree in the frontier, protected and pampered by her father and brother.
He, in contrast, had suffered immensely after his father's single misstep led to his family's exile from Bianjing. It was only due to his aunt, Noble Consort Zhuo, securing her position in the harem that he was even allowed to return and study. He vowed to never forget those who had stepped on, tried to crush, and looked down on his family.
He explained that he had diligently climbed the ranks, inch by inch, following the established rules, all to achieve a position where everyone would acknowledge and respect him, allowing him to live with dignity and protect her should she ever need him. He called Sang Qi his "bottom line," acknowledging that she had repeatedly disrupted his plans since arriving in Bianjing, yet he had never blamed her.
He had even negotiated with Xizhao and Noble Consort Zhuo to protect her and had expressed his desire to marry her many times. However, he accused Sang Qi of repeatedly disappointing him and deceiving him alongside others, asserting that her current predicament was a result of her own choices. Sang Qi responded with bitter irony, claiming that knowing him was the biggest mistake of her life and that her impending death would fulfill his wish.
Zhuo Wenyuan, with a somber look, admitted that losing her was his greatest regret, but without her, he would have no more weaknesses. He chillingly noted that in her final moments, he was finally the one by her side. Moments later, Sang Qi passed away. The Sang Residence was draped in white mourning silks, a somber scene. Whispers circulated among the townspeople about Sang Qi's unfortunate passing, drawing parallels to her brother Sang Yu's death four years prior.
They also mentioned that Grand Commandant Sang, heartbroken and bedridden after losing both his children, had not even attended the funeral and was reportedly planning to retire and leave Bianjing. Suddenly, Zhuo Wenyuan arrived at the memorial hall with a retinue. Yan Yan immediately confronted him, accusing him of audacity for showing his face.
Zhuo Wenyuan calmly dismissed Yan Yan's words, stating that as old friends, he had every right to pay his respects, but promised to settle their score another day. Zhuo Wenyuan knew Yan Yunzhi would come, but he was resolute in denying him a final farewell with Sang Qi. He mentally asked for Sang Qi's forgiveness.
As expected, Yan Yunzhi arrived, his presence immediately noted by Song Luotian, one of Zhuo Wenyuan's subordinates, who suggested arresting him after he paid his respects. Yan Yunzhi, no longer concealed, pleaded with Zhuo Wenyuan to allow him to see Sang Qi one last time, promising to surrender afterward. Zhuo Wenyuan coldly refused, declaring that he wanted Yan Yunzhi to forever remember that he, Zhuo Wenyuan, was the one who shared Sang Qi's final moments.
Yan Yunzhi then attempted to force his way in. Yan Yan, declaring he would abandon his official post to side with the Deputy Chief, joined the fray. A fierce confrontation erupted, but Yan Yunzhi and Yan Yan were ultimately outnumbered and overpowered by Zhuo Wenyuan's men. With a chilling command, Zhuo Wenyuan ordered Jing Mu to set the memorial hall ablaze.
Yan Yunzhi cried out Sang Qi's name in agony as he was forced to watch her coffin slowly consumed by the flames. With Yan Yunzhi captured, Zhuo Wenyuan dropped his facade. He coolly reflected on Yan Yunzhi's failed attempt to send Yan San Lang up the mountain, acknowledging it as a good strategy, though Yan San Lang's body had simply "failed him."
He further gloated about the state of their allies and families: Grand Commandant Sang was now grief-stricken and bedridden, having lost both his children and missing court for days. As for Yan Yunzhi's family, though Yan Yunzhi had severed ties with them, the Chancellor was now publicly reflecting on himself. Yan Yan, a mere low-ranking official, stood no chance of restoring his family's honor. Even the Song family, whom Zhuo Wenyuan referred to as "turncoats," were now completely subservient.
Yan Yunzhi sarcastically congratulated Zhuo Wenyuan on his ascendancy, noting that everyone, from commoners to the Emperor, now depended on him. Yan Yunzhi then cut deep, reminding Zhuo Wenyuan that he was still fundamentally "the son of a criminal" and would be nothing without the Imperial College's acceptance. Enraged, Zhuo Wenyuan lashed out, forbidding mention of his father, whom he deemed incapable. He claimed his current success was solely his own making, declaring, "I won."
Yan Yunzhi countered, questioning the value of such a victory now that Sang Qi was gone, and whether immense power and wealth were truly worth her absence. Zhuo Wenyuan paused, admitting he had thought long about that question, but Sang Qi had never given him a chance to choose, implying that Yan Yunzhi and others had forced him onto this path. Yan Yunzhi simply laughed, prompting Zhuo Wenyuan to threaten his life.
Yan Yunzhi calmly dared him to act, hinting that prolonged deliberation might lead to a change of heart. Later, Zhuo Wenyuan's subordinate suggested he change out of his "unlucky" clothes before meeting Noble Consort Zhuo, but Zhuo Wenyuan dismissed the notion, asserting that "bad luck is miles away" from him now.
He then met Noble Consort Zhuo at the palace, reporting Yan Yunzhi's capture and his confession, detailing the ledger and witness evidence, his dissatisfaction with his concubine-born status and years of suppressed ambition, and noting that Official Xiao was now handling the judgment. Zhuo Wenyuan assured her that Yan Yunzhi's crimes were severe and would be dealt with swiftly.
He also informed her that he had repaired the water and land trade routes, which would soon be operational, and that without Xizhao's share, their profits would be significantly higher, allowing them to pursue "bigger goals" and bribe more people. He confirmed that the funds had been safely relocated from the Zhuo Residence. Noble Consort Zhuo praised his shrewdness, lamenting that his father lacked such wisdom, which led to his being a scapegoat and her nephew's exile.
She acknowledged that their combined efforts had successfully elevated the fallen Zhuo family to a position of new prominence, admitting she had initially worried Sang Qi would hinder him but now realized her fears were unfounded. Zhuo Wenyuan humbly credited her guidance, confidently stating that from now on, no one would dare oppose them, and everyone would have to defer to the Zhuo family. Upon returning, Zhuo Wenyuan found Song Jiayin about to leave the table before finishing her meal.
He called her back, playfully questioning if he was so unpleasant that she would leave at his sight. He insisted she eat with him and urged her to speak her mind directly. Song Jiayin then asked if Sang Qi's death was related to him, as the rumors suggested. Zhuo Wenyuan's hand froze for a moment, but he quickly composed himself, denying any involvement and claiming ignorance as he did not study medicine.
He feigned surprise at her sudden concern, reminding her that she had always wanted Sang Qi to embarrass herself. Song Jiayin conceded that she and Sang Qi were not close, often bickering, but confessed that upon hearing of Sang Qi's death, she felt a pang of sadness and wished to see her one last time.
She reflected that Sang Qi was the only person in Bianjing bold enough to challenge her, and despite their rivalry, having Sang Qi around had been genuinely entertaining. While she never wished Sang Qi well, she certainly never desired her death. Seeing Song Jiayin's tears, Zhuo Wenyuan gently wiped them away and comforted her, suggesting they eat before the food got cold.
He then offered to accompany her to visit her parents the next day, stating that he was tired from recent events and desired to spend time with family. Song Jiayin was visibly surprised and touched by his offer. Zhuo Wenyuan reaffirmed his commitment to treat her well and cherish their new familial bond. He then instructed Jing Mu to prepare lavish gifts for his father-in-law, Grand Tutor Song, to avoid appearing disrespectful.
Song Jiayin gratefully thanked him, to which Zhuo Wenyuan teasingly asked if he was still a villain in her eyes. She smiled, replying, "No, you're my family." The next day, at Grand Tutor Song's residence, Song Jiayin's father praised Zhuo Wenyuan for successfully resolving the Xizhao case and securing Yan Yunzhi's confession.
Zhuo Wenyuan confirmed Yan Yunzhi's inescapable fate and assured his father-in-law that the incriminating ledgers had been "naturally" dealt with, advising him to keep such sensitive information in his mind, not on paper. Grand Tutor Song then inquired about the three or four stalled shipments, citing the humid southern climate and poor storage conditions causing significant losses. He pressed Zhuo Wenyuan on when they could resume operations now that the situation was safe.
Zhuo Wenyuan confirmed that Noble Consort Zhuo had approved, and since the case was completely closed and Official Xiao was drafting the judgment, it would no longer attract undue attention. He gave the go-ahead for the goods to move, stating, "All under heaven converges for profit, all under heaven disperses for profit. Goods sitting still with no profit will also cause people to become discontent." Grand Tutor Song lauded his wisdom. Later, a carriage was stopped by officials.
An official requested an urgent audience with His Majesty, citing a secret imperial order to conduct a thorough search. During the search, a customs clearance pass was discovered, followed by other incriminating items. Subsequently, the internal informant in the Prefecture Court was apprehended. The reporting official, visibly stunned, struggled to articulate the full implications of what had been uncovered, muttering that he was certain of what he saw, yet it seemed impossible.
Episode 30 (Ending) Recap
Following the discovery of ill-gotten gains hidden within the Imperial College's ancient texts by Yan San Lang, Zhuo Wenyuan grew increasingly alarmed. His network of contacts—including those in the Prefecture Court, a warehouse, and the Imperial College—had all vanished without a trace. Further reports confirmed that Yan San Lang, previously presumed unconscious, was not only awake but had been seen near the Imperial College.
Zhuo Wenyuan realized with dismay that he had fallen into an elaborate trap, concluding that Yan San Lang must have been conscious for a prolonged period, even aiding Yan Yunzhi in clearing his name, and that Yan Yunzhi’s capture and feigned vulnerability were merely part of a larger deception. Enraged that Sang Qi's supposed death had not broken Yan Yunzhi's spirit, Zhuo Wenyuan defiantly refused to yield.
He commanded all incriminating invoices within his residence to be destroyed and prepared his forces for a swift departure from the city. He planned to pass it off as a hunting trip if undisturbed, or to confront Yan Yunzhi directly and eliminate him under the guise of "purging corrupt officials." In a ruthless display, he declared that Grand Tutor Song, his own father-in-law, would be the convenient scapegoat for his crimes.
Acting under the orders of Yan Hua from the Prefecture Court, Yan Yan arrived at Grand Tutor Song’s residence to arrest him. Song Luotian, however, bravely confronted Yan Yan, questioning the Prefecture Court’s authority and adamantly refusing to allow his father to be unjustly blamed. Recognizing the inevitable clash, Yan Yan and Song Luotian agreed to a personal duel, instructing their respective subordinates to stand down.
During their fierce exchange, an arrow was suddenly fired, aimed at Yan Yan, but Song Luotian instinctively shielded him, taking the arrow himself. Believing he was mortally wounded, Song Luotian confessed to Yan Yan that despite their constant rivalry at the Imperial College, those shared times were truly unforgettable, and his sole intention was to protect his parents. Yan Yan, however, calmly revealed that the wound was merely a graze, not life-threatening.
Yan Yan then assured Song Luotian that while his family would face the consequences for their actions, he would ensure they would not meet a fate as unjust as Qian Jiu’s. With the confrontation resolved, Yan Yan proceeded with Song Luotian’s arrest. In the dead of night, Yan Yunzhi confronted Zhuo Wenyuan as he attempted to flee the city. Zhuo Wenyuan feigned a hunting trip, but Yan Yunzhi exposed his true intent to "hunt" Yan Yunzhi himself.
Zhuo Wenyuan then signaled his armed, black-clad men to surround Yan Yunzhi, boasting of his numerical superiority and vowing to eliminate Yan Yunzhi and his allies to preserve his image as a loyal official. He lamented that Yan Yunzhi’s persistent investigation into Sang Yu’s death had led to this confrontation, suggesting that peace could have been maintained if Yan Yunzhi had not interfered.
Yan Yunzhi retorted that it was not too late for Zhuo Wenyuan to face justice for his illicit profiteering. Zhuo Wenyuan then declared that Yan Yunzhi would die with his secrets. Suddenly, an arrow soared through the air, narrowly missing Zhuo Wenyuan, who recognized the archery skill as belonging to Grand Commandant Sang’s forces. To his profound shock, the archer was revealed to be Sang Qi, alive and well.
Sang Qi’s vibrant red attire illuminated the darkness, gradually giving way to Zhuo Wenyuan’s stunned realization. Sang Qi revealed that she and Yan Yunzhi had long been aware of the poisonous pouch she wore, and her supposed death was an elaborate ruse. A flashback showed a physician noting Sang Qi’s pale lips and beads of sweat on her nostrils, signs of poisoning.
Upon examination, the physician identified a highly concentrated poison powder from Xizhao in the pouch, warning of its fatal effects if worn daily. Sang Qi realized that the pouch, which she had briefly taken off, must have been tampered with by Zhuo Wenyuan, confirming his connection to Qian Jiu's death. She then instructed the physician to keep her condition a secret, allowing her and Yan Yunzhi to play along with Zhuo Wenyuan’s scheme.
Their plan was to let Zhuo Wenyuan believe he had triumphed, leading him to become overconfident and make a critical error, thus creating an opportunity for their counterattack. Sang Qi further explained that her apparent demise was orchestrated using Su Jieyu’s Pseudocide Pill, which induced a death-like state, successfully deceiving Zhuo Wenyuan.
While the public mourned her and Yan Yunzhi was captured, Sang Qi, despite the uncomfortable side effects of the pill, utilized a secret passage beneath her coffin to escape. Her "death" provided a plausible explanation for Yan Yunzhi’s subsequent "capture" and "surrender." In prison, Yan Yunzhi intentionally provoked Zhuo Wenyuan, knowing that he would keep him alive until his grand scheme was complete.
This strategy allowed Yan Yunzhi and his allies to track Zhuo Wenyuan’s newly established salt route, leading them to expose his remaining confederates and uncover the locations where he had hidden his ill-gotten gains. Faced with his exposed treachery, a distraught Zhuo Wenyuan asked Sang Qi why she was cold to him, implying it was because he had tried to kill her.
Sang Qi told him he was now a stranger, vastly different from the person she had grown up with, and that they should accept their respective fates. Zhuo Wenyuan insisted on a final resolution to their long and complicated history. Despite Yan Yunzhi’s apprehension, Sang Qi, witnessing Zhuo Wenyuan’s despair, attempted to persuade him to surrender and return with her to confess.
However, Zhuo Wenyuan, declaring he was "too far gone" and wishing to repay the life he felt he owed Sang Qi, tragically took the sword from her hand and ended his own life. Following Zhuo Wenyuan’s death, the case was declared clear. Zhuo Wenyuan was confirmed as the primary culprit, and his confederates were apprehended.
Noble Consort Zhuo, for manipulating imperial ministers and framing loyal officials, was stripped of her title and confined to the cold palace for life, though she was spared execution out of respect for the Emperor's marital bond. Grand Tutor Song was stripped of his official rank and exiled to the frontier fortress, while Song Luotian was demoted to a commoner.
Song Luotian voluntarily accepted his punishment, vowing to accompany his father, reflect on their actions, and strive for a new beginning. The story then transitioned to a joyous wedding day. Sang Qi, radiant in her bridal gown, rode a horse towards her waiting groom, Yan Yunzhi, who gallantly rushed forward to sweep her off the horse.
Before the main ceremony, Sang Qi visited Sang Yu’s cenotaph, speaking to his spirit about Yan Yunzhi fulfilling his promise to care for her and their collective efforts to realize Sang Yu’s vision for the Imperial College. She also shared a heartfelt farewell with Yan Yan and Song Luotian, acknowledging their roles in her life despite their divergent paths.
Song Luotian, now a commoner, reaffirmed his commitment to atonement and his hope of one day returning to the Imperial College through legitimate academic achievement. Amidst these personal moments, Miss Song was seen taking Zhuo Wenyuan’s remains back to the frontier fortress, a place he had always loathed. During the wedding ceremony, Yan Yunzhi humorously presented Sang Qi with a bamboo ruler, symbolizing his desire for her to "discipline" him in their marriage.
Sang Qi, in turn, gifted Yan Yunzhi a pouch, a poignant nod to how their relationship began and a symbol of their enduring bond. A royal decree then arrived, presented as a wedding gift from His Majesty. The Emperor, recognizing Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi’s contributions, first granted Sang Qi her request to become a Boshi (Scholar) at the Imperial College, making her the first female scholar of the Imperial College.
He then accepted their joint proposal to establish Class Hualin within the Imperial College, opening its doors to all talented individuals regardless of age, gender, or social status. Additionally, the Emperor informed Yan Yunzhi that his prior engagement to Su Jieyu had already been annulled when he was unjustly accused, and now formally blessed his union with Sang Qi, commending their resilience and hoping they would serve as a model for all couples in Bianjing.
As a new academic year commenced, the Imperial College once again buzzed with lively activity. Sang Qi, now a scholar, playfully climbed onto a rooftop, prompting Yan Yunzhi to lightheartedly remind her about maintaining proper decorum. She retorted that she was no longer merely "Scholar Sang" and he was no longer "Deputy Chief Yan." When he asked who he was then, she lovingly declared him her husband.
Together, Sang Qi and Yan Yunzhi observed the vibrant campus, their hearts filled with profound satisfaction, knowing that after overcoming immense hardships, they had not only realized their personal dreams but also ushered in a new era of inclusive education for all.
