Lin Ling informed Yang Chengwan that Lu Yi had already proposed marriage, believing that given Lu Yi's status as Lu Ting's eldest son, he would be able to protect Yuan Jinxia. However, Yang Chengwan strongly objected, concerned that Lu Ting would never agree if he knew Yuan Jinxia's true family background. Yuan Jinxia met with Lu Yi, sharing her discovery that she had found her family, though sadly, they had all passed away.
Lu Yi sighed, realizing she now knew everything. Yuan Jinxia excitedly revealed that Lin Ling was indeed her maternal aunt, and her paternal grandfather was Xia Ran, the former Grand Secretary. She explained that while others claimed her grandfather committed a crime, she knew he was framed, and the Yan family was her primary enemy. Despite Lin Ling not urging revenge, Yuan Jinxia vowed to seek retribution for her family's destruction.
Lu Yi cautioned her about the Yan family's immense power, urging her not to reveal her identity or act impulsively. Internally, Lu Yi was devastated, questioning why Yuan Jinxia had to be Xia Ran's granddaughter. He grappled with the realization that if she learned the full truth about the Xia Ran case, an insurmountable conflict would arise between them, and he agonized over how to minimize her pain. Lu Yi later met with Lan Qingxuan, seeking solace in alcohol.
Lan Qingxuan pressed him to reveal his worries. Lu Yi brought up the Xia Ran case from over a decade ago. He explained that his father, Lu Ting, had once been impeached and had to kneel before Xia Ran to beg for his release, an act that caused Lu Ting to harbor deep resentment towards Xia Ran.
He further elaborated that Yan Song had acquired a crucial letter from Qiu Cheng, who was in Imperial Prison at the time, with Lu Ting's involvement, which accused Xia Ran of colluding with a border general, leading to the downfall of the Xia family. Lu Yi then revealed that Yuan Jinxia was Xia Ran's granddaughter. Lan Qingxuan was astonished, recognizing that this made Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia enemies.
Lu Yi confessed his fear that Yuan Jinxia, given her character, would not hate him, but would instead blame fate and herself, a thought he found unbearable. At home, Yuan Jinxia was engrossed in embroidering the character "Xia" on a handkerchief, intending it as a gift for Lu Yi, hoping it would always remain with him. Lin Ling watched her, then announced that they would visit Yuan Jinxia's old family home the following day.
That night, Lu Yi stood outside Yuan Jinxia's house, observing the light from her window, his heart in turmoil. He resolved that for her own good, he had no choice but to hurt her, unaware that she was still happily working on the handkerchief for him. The next day, Lin Ling took Yuan Jinxia to the dilapidated Xia family mansion, a place Lin Ling remembered as where Yuan Jinxia used to play as a child.
Yuan Jinxia suddenly experienced a vivid memory of playing hopscotch with an elderly man, realizing with a jolt that he was her grandfather. Despite not remembering much of her childhood, Yuan Jinxia, as the sole surviving member of the Xia family, felt a profound responsibility to clear her grandfather's name. Meanwhile, Yan Shifan had also uncovered Yuan Jinxia's identity, confirming her as Lin Ling's niece and Xia Ran's granddaughter, finding the coincidence amusing.
Lu Yi remained deeply conflicted, torn by his love for Yuan Jinxia and the reality of her being Xia Ran's granddaughter. He accepted it as fate and vowed to atone for the Lu family's debt to the Xia family. Lu Ting's health was visibly deteriorating. A doctor informed him his condition was serious, and while recovery was possible with medicine, Lu Ting himself believed his time was limited.
He expressed his only remaining concern was Lu Yi, fearing his son's steadfast loyalty and strong friendships might lead him into trouble. Lu Yi had spent the entire night handling duties at the North Bureau. Soon after, news arrived that the Star Observation Temple had collapsed, enraging the Emperor.
The Emperor, not believing Yan Shifan's explanation for the collapse, demanded that Lu Ting immediately investigate the true cause and the whereabouts of the Ministry of Works' funds, giving Yan Shifan one month to reconstruct the temple. Lu Yi rushed to the site of the collapsed temple and observed workers preparing to discard damaged wood, claiming it was unusable after being soaked by rain. He suspected wrongdoing.
Lu Yi then met with Lan Qingxuan, whom the Emperor had secretly consulted for divination regarding the collapse. Lan Qingxuan explained that the Emperor also doubted Yan Shifan's explanation and wanted him to secretly investigate. Lu Yi stated his belief that there was an issue with the wood and that the Ministry of Works should be held accountable.
Separately, Shangguan Xi and Xie Xiao prepared to escort a large shipment of wood and goods to the capital, a massive order that required meticulous care given a previous incident where money under their escort had been lost. They planned to depart the following morning. Lu Ting's health showed no improvement, prompting Lu Yi to personally bring him medicine. Yuan Jinxia, who hadn't seen Lu Yi recently, had waited patiently at the North Bureau for him.
She presented him with the handkerchief she had painstakingly embroidered, apologizing for its amateur appearance. Lu Yi, maintaining a cold demeanor, rejected the gift and dismissively told her he had no time for her. When she questioned his behavior, he harshly declared that she should know her place, asserting that her identity would bring shame to the Lu family. Yuan Jinxia was stunned, recalling his past declaration that she was the only woman he ever wanted to marry.
Trembling, she realized she had misjudged him and their bond, feeling her heart had been misguided. She dropped the handkerchief and walked away. Lu Yi quietly picked it up, internally apologizing and believing his actions were necessary to protect her. Heartbroken, Yuan Jinxia sought solace in drinking heavily with Yang Yue, who struggled to restrain her.
She cried, lamenting that she no longer had Lu Yi to rely on and recognizing that his family, being high-ranking officials, would inevitably care about her background. She begged Yang Yue to let her drink more, hoping to forget Lu Yi and his cruel words. Yang Yue reluctantly complied, then carried her drunken body home. Lu Yi watched them from a distance until she was safely inside.
Lin Ling prepared sobering soup for Yuan Jinxia, who expressed her deep desire to forget Lu Yi. Lin Ling compassionately told her that while she could make her sober up, she could not make her forget; that was a burden Yuan Jinxia had to bear herself. Lin Ling suggested a possible misunderstanding and encouraged Yuan Jinxia to talk to Lu Yi, but Yuan Jinxia firmly refused, stating there was nothing left to discuss.
