The Untamed Episode 36 Recap
> The Untamed Recap
After consuming a single cup of liquor, Lan Wangji became completely inebriated, prompting Wei Wuxian to lead him back to their room. Sixteen years had passed, yet Lan Wangji’s inability to hold his liquor remained unchanged. Once Lan Wangji was settled, Wei Wuxian ventured outside and began playing his flute. In the vast darkness, Wen Ning appeared, bound by chains, his eyes vacant, seemingly not recognizing Wei Wuxian.
Observing the chains, Wei Wuxian deduced that someone intended to restrain Wen Ning and had also enslaved his mind. Upon feeling the back of Wen Ning's head, Wei Wuxian discovered and removed two long needles. Wen Ning's face contorted in agony before he finally regained consciousness. Wen Ning, reunited with Wei Wuxian after a long separation, recounted that he and his sister, Wen Qing, had gone to Jinlin Tai, where he was subsequently imprisoned by the Jin Clan Leader.
His memories grew increasingly hazy, as if trapped in darkness, until Wei Wuxian’s flute music broke through his confinement. Overcome with remorse, Wen Ning knelt before Wei Wuxian, apologizing profusely, believing his actions had led to the deaths of Jin Zixuan and Wen Qing, and ultimately harmed Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian quickly helped him up, comforting him by reminding him that Wen Qing had called him a "precious blade."
Noting the cumbersome chains, Wei Wuxian planned to discreetly borrow Lan Wangji's Bichen sword to sever them, instructing Wen Ning to wait while he returned to the inn. However, as Wei Wuxian turned, he was startled to find Lan Wangji standing behind him. He hastily tried to explain his intention to borrow Bichen, only to realize Lan Wangji was still profoundly drunk and oblivious.
Wei Wuxian attempted to guide Lan Wangji back to the inn but took a wrong turn, leading them to a farmhouse. The drunken Lan Wangji stumbled into the yard and pilfered two roosters, insisting Wei Wuxian take them. As Wei Wuxian exasperatedly held the squawking birds, Lan Wangji inscribed "Lan Wangji was here" on a post.
Amused, Wei Wuxian indulged the antics, adding his own inscription, "Wei Wuxian was also here," before finally leading the stumbling Lan Wangji back to their inn. Back in their room, Wei Wuxian sensed a disturbance and cautiously entered to discover a masked individual, who immediately lunged at him with a sword. Despite his inebriated state, Lan Wangji instinctively shielded Wei Wuxian and engaged the assailant.
Wei Wuxian was shocked to observe the attacker's remarkable familiarity with Lan Wangji’s sword techniques, wondering if the person was from the Lan Clan. Realizing he was at a disadvantage, the masked man used a Portal Talisman to escape, remarking "Thanks" before vanishing. With Lan Wangji still disoriented, Wei Wuxian seized the opportunity for some questions. He probed Lan Wangji about whether he had tasted Emperor's Smile (No), broken any regulations (Yes), and if he liked rabbits (Yes).
When pressed on why he helped Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji confessed his regret over the battle at Nevernight, for not standing by Wei Wuxian's side. Deeply moved, Wei Wuxian earnestly assured him that none of it was his fault. As the Hai hour (9 PM) arrived, Lan Wangji, adhering to his ingrained habit, abruptly lay down to rest.
The following morning, Wei Wuxian woke to find a group of children playfully impersonating the various clan leaders, even mentioning the Yiling Patriarch. Soon after, Lan Wangji emerged, seemingly having no recollection of his drunken escapades. Wei Wuxian didn't reveal the details, instead teasing him about his fondness for rabbits.
Turning to serious matters, Wei Wuxian shared his concern about the masked assailant, whose high cultivation and decision to cast a spell on his sword suggested he was a prominent figure trying to hide his identity. Lan Wangji firmly denied knowing the person, a statement Wei Wuxian trusted. They concluded the man was connected to Nie Mingjue's death and was after the Spirit-trapping pouch. Determined to uncover the truth, they followed the saber spirit's direction east.
The path was desolate, prompting them to inquire with a villager. They learned it led to Yi City, or "Coffin Town," a notoriously ominous place where residents met untimely ends. The villager explained that the town's name, 'Yi,' referred to 'Yi Zhuang' (charnel house) rather than 'chivalry,' due to its abundance of mortuaries and its trade in coffins and paper effigies. As they approached, the town was shrouded in a dense, unsettling fog, living up to its reputation.
Journeying into the thick fog, where visibility was near zero, they unexpectedly encountered Jin Ling, Lan Sizhui, and other junior disciples. The juniors explained they had gotten lost after hearing strange rhythmic sounds and seeing a small, blurry figure that would vanish when approached. They had been unable to find a way out, and Lan Sizhui’s attempt to fly up was blocked by shadowy figures in the air.
After a brief argument over their respective animal companions, Wei Wuxian silenced Jin Ling with a spell just as a horde of puppets surged from the fog. Lan Wangji swiftly intervened, shattering them. Wei Wuxian was alarmed, recognizing they were controlled by a Stygian Tiger Amulet and confirming his suspicion that someone had replicated half of the amulet. The disciples complained about a strange, foul-smelling powder in the air.
Just then, the masked man reappeared, intent on seizing the Spirit-trapping pouch. Lan Wangji engaged him in combat, allowing Wei Wuxian to lead the juniors to safety. He noticed some disciples had been poisoned by powder on the puppets. Upon checking their tongues, he confirmed the poisoning, warning them it would be fatal if it reached their hearts. He took charge, instructing the un-poisoned to carry the afflicted with their heads and hearts elevated to slow the poison's circulation.
They found a shop filled with unsettling paper figures. The elderly shopkeeper reluctantly let them in. As Wei Wuxian lit a candle, he noticed puppet-like marks on her neck, raising his suspicions. He then requested to use the kitchen, asking for a volunteer to assist him.
