In a pouring rain, Wei Wuxian's emotions neared a breaking point. Lan Wangji gravely warned him that leaving would be an act of true rebellion against the orthodox cultivation world, with no path of return. Wei Wuxian, his voice laced with anguish, questioned what kind of orthodoxy he would be rebelling against.

He reminded Lan Wangji of their shared vow to aid the weak and eliminate evil, bitterly asking who was strong, who was weak, and who was right or wrong in their current world. He lamented that if he had only stopped the Jin clan from using living people as bait during the Phoenix Mountain hunt, Wen Ning might have been spared.

Having already missed the chance to save Wen Ning from death, Wei Wuxian declared he would not back down now, vowing to save the remaining Wen clan members. He then told Lan Wangji that if a battle against the world was inevitable, he would rather fight to the death with him, finding solace in the thought of dying at the hands of Hanguang-Jun.

Knowing he could not sway Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji could only watch as he rode away into the darkness. Overwhelmed, Lan Wangji dropped his umbrella, letting the rain wash over him. Wei Wuxian led the remaining elderly, young, and female members of the Wen clan to the Burial Mounds, assuring them that the desolate place was habitable, as he had lived there for three months.

Meanwhile, back at the Golden Carp Tower, Lan Wangji found himself among the various clan leaders, who had convened to hear Jin Guangyao recount Wei Wuxian's recent actions. Jin Guangyao reported that at Qiongqi Path, Wei Wuxian had turned the deceased Wen Ning into a fierce puppet, who then went on a rampage and killed four overseers.

He further stated that Wei Wuxian had taken approximately fifty Wen clan remnants to the Burial Mounds, where they occupied Xue Chonghai's Demon-Subduing Palace and established formidable barriers, preventing anyone from ascending the mountain. Feeling the pressure, Jiang Cheng promptly stood to apologize on Wei Wuxian's behalf, offering to remedy the situation. However, Jin Guangshan was unrelenting, pointing out that the slain overseers hailed from various clans.

Jiang Cheng attempted to defend Wei Wuxian by explaining that Wen Ning and his sister, Wen Qing, had once rendered significant aid to him and Wei Wuxian. Lan Xichen supported this, noting that the Wen siblings had a different temperament from other Wen clan members and had never participated in any atrocities.

Despite these pleas, the other clan leaders remained adamant, asserting that simply not participating was insufficient; their silence made them complicit, and all members of the Wen clan deserved to die. Jin Guangshan, with thinly veiled malice, began to sow discord by suggesting Wei Wuxian held no respect for Jiang Cheng. He cited rumors that the Jiang clan's achievements in the Sunshot Campaign were solely due to Wei Wuxian, undermining Jiang Cheng's authority.

Other leaders joined the accusations, claiming Wei Wuxian misinterpreted the Jin clan's offer to safeguard the Stygian Tiger Amulet and questioning its mysterious origins, hinting at a collusion with Xue Yang. One leader then falsely claimed to have heard Wei Wuxian openly state at Phoenix Mountain that he held no respect for Jiang Cheng. Unable to tolerate the slander, Lan Wangji coldly interjected, stating he had never heard Wei Wuxian speak disrespectfully of his clan leader.

Seeing the rising tension, Jin Guangyao attempted to ease the atmosphere, suggesting that Wei Wuxian's aggressive words might have been misconstrued. Still, other clan leaders continued their condemnations, criticizing Wei Wuxian for abandoning the righteous path for unorthodox "crafty tricks." Jin Zixun accused Wei Wuxian of indiscriminately slaughtering people for a few Wen clan "dogs." Mianmian, unable to endure the injustice, bravely spoke up, challenging the term "indiscriminate killing."

She argued that if the overseers had indeed abused prisoners and caused Wen Ning's death, then Wei Wuxian's actions were a matter of seeking justice. Her words sparked a fierce backlash. Mianmian reasoned that the surviving overseers, to evade responsibility, would naturally claim innocence and insist Wen Ning had fallen accidentally. After being shamed by Clan Leader Yao and others, Mianmian defiantly untied her Jin clan sash, announced her secession from the clan, and stormed out.

Jin Guangshan further instigated Jiang Cheng, accusing Wei Wuxian of planning to establish his own sect at the Burial Mounds. He relentlessly pressed Jiang Cheng, arguing that Wei Wuxian’s actions showed a lack of respect for his authority, which was especially damaging while he was still rebuilding the Jiang clan. Under this immense pressure, Jiang Cheng reluctantly promised to go to the Burial Mounds, resolve the matter, and retrieve the Stygian Tiger Amulet.

Meanwhile, Lan Wangji had already returned to the Cloud Recesses, where he faced a severe reprimand from Lan Qiren. His uncle expressed deep disappointment, reminding Lan Wangji of his leniency after the incident in the forbidden library. He chided Lan Wangji for pursuing Wei Wuxian to Qiongqi Path and allowing him to escape, viewing it as a repeated transgression.

Lan Qiren sternly cited the clan rule, "Do not associate with evil," and urged Lan Wangji not to repeat the tragedy of his father's past. At Jinlintai, Jin Zixuan anxiously waited for Jiang Yanli. She informed him that she and Jiang Cheng would be leaving the next day. Visibly distraught, Jin Zixuan pleaded with her to stay, confessing his deep affection and promising to care for her for the rest of his life.

Concurrently, at the Burial Mounds, Wei Wuxian tended to Wen Ning, whose body was covered in talismans. When Wen Qing arrived with food, Wei Wuxian revealed that Wen Ning could now hear sounds, suggesting she speak to him often to help him awaken. Wei Wuxian then busied himself planting crops with the Wen clan members. A young boy, Wen Yuan, playfully clung to him, and Wei Wuxian joked about planting him in the ground like a turnip.

Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng arrived at the Burial Mounds. His subordinates reported being unable to pass the talismanic barriers, so Jiang Cheng used his whip, Zidian, to break through and entered alone. He was astonished to find Wei Wuxian and the Wen clan farming and building. Jiang Cheng incredulously questioned if Wei Wuxian truly intended to grow food on a "corpse mountain."

He then observed Wen Yuan and remarked that the other clan leaders had feared Wei Wuxian was raising an army, only to find a group of "the old, the weak, and the crooked," a description Wei Wuxian sharply retorted against. Jiang Cheng followed Wei Wuxian into a cave, where he saw Wen Ning's inert form. Jiang Cheng pressed Wei Wuxian about his condition, repeating the rumor that he had been "resurrected" into a fierce killer.

Wei Wuxian clarified that Wen Ning was not resurrected. As a child, a portion of his spiritual cognition had been taken by a "Dancing Fairy," making him a lure for evil spirits. When they found his body, his heart pulse was severed, but he was corrupted by resentful energy. Wei Wuxian explained he had tried to use the Stygian Tiger Amulet to channel Wen Ning's spirit to punish the Jins, but it unexpectedly turned him into an uncontrollable puppet.

He elaborated that Wen Ning's naturally timid nature had caused him to suppress his emotions, and upon losing control of his mind, all his pent-up fury and pain burst forth, causing the rampage. Wei Wuxian stated he was now trying to reawaken Wen Ning's consciousness. Jiang Cheng, finding the idea preposterous, retorted that Wen Ning could no longer be considered human. Wei Wuxian then asked if Jiang Cheng also suspected him of taking a shard of the Yin Iron.
