Han Li, having purchased an item, was confronted by Lu Mingyuan, who accused him of ruining his opportunity and intended to fight him. Their altercation was cut short when Chen Qiaoqian intervened, reminding them that the spirit root test was about to begin and urging them to avoid trouble. Lu Mingyuan conceded, warning Han Li he wouldn't be so lucky next time, and left with his companion.

A young woman introduced herself as Han Yunzhi and, learning Han Li was also there for the spirit root test, invited him to go with her. The spirit root test was hosted by Nangong Wan of the Moonshadow Sect, representing the Seven Sects. As Han Li looked towards Nangong Wan, Wan Xiaoshan cautioned him, explaining that in the cultivation world, a clear hierarchy exists, and lower-level cultivators must not stare at higher-level ones like Core Formation grandmasters.

Many hopefuls came forward for testing. Yan Ruyan, the heiress of the Yan Clan, displayed a Heavenly spirit root, earning her invitations from all seven sects. She chose the Moonshadow Sect, which Wan Xiaoshan informed Han Li was currently the strongest of the Seven Sects. Wan Xiaoshan, possessing a Metal-Water-Fire-Earth quad spirit root, was rejected. Another cultivator, who was injured earlier, passed with a Water-Fire-Earth triple spirit root.

Lu Mingyuan, with a Fire-Wood dual spirit root, and Chen Qiaoqian, with a Water-Earth dual spirit root, both passed and chose Yellow Maple Valley. Lu Mingyuan then instructed Chen Qiaoqian to pass the spirit orb to Han Li. Han Li, with a Wood-Water-Fire-Earth quad spirit root, was also rejected. Following the test, Qingwen, another candidate who had failed to be selected, rallied the disillusioned rogue cultivators.

He proposed that if all rogue cultivators contributed their artifacts, talismans, and pills for collective use, they could stand a chance against the well-resourced clan disciples in the upcoming Tianwu Arena tournament. Qingwen offered his mid-grade whisk as an example, asserting that his Azure Vein Society aimed to establish a world where everyone was equal. Many rogue cultivators were swayed and offered their treasures.

Han Li, sensing a scam, claimed he wouldn't participate, but under pressure, he contributed a restorative pill before feigning a stomach ache to leave. Wan Xiaoshan later defended the rogue cultivators to Han Li, believing they were all one big family. Meanwhile, Qingwen was overheard confirming to his associates that the bazaar's barrier would prevent anyone from leaving until after the tournament, at which point they would take all the collected treasures, by force if necessary.

Sometime later, Han Yunzhi sought out Han Li, offering a variety of talismans in exchange for more pills to treat her ailing brother. Han Li found her talismans of little use but expressed interest in cinnabar and talisman paper. Han Yunzhi then offered him her family heirloom, a Golden Bamboo Brush, a precious tool for talisman making. Han Li gave her two bottles of pills, and she sweetened the deal with her remaining talismans, ink, and a Talisman Compendium.

She also gave Han Li a book called "Clear Stream Note," filled with cultivation world anecdotes. While reading it, Han Li discovered a passage about an "Ascension Token," which could grant the holder direct entry into a sect and a Foundation Pill, bypassing the spirit root test. He shared this with Wan Xiaoshan, who dismissed it as a rumor.

Unbeknownst to them, Nangong Wan was already aware of stolen tokens and the Azure Vein Society's involvement, planning to apprehend them after the tournament. At the Tianwu Arena, Qingwen lost his match to Lu Mingyuan. Despite Qingwen conceding, Lu Mingyuan attempted to deliver a fatal blow. Nangong Wan swiftly intervened, reminding Lu Mingyuan of the rules and sternly warning against any actions that would incite conflict between clan disciples and rogue cultivators.

After Lu Mingyuan received his Foundation Pill, Han Li reflected on his own path, realizing success in cultivation could come from meticulous planning and resourcefulness, not just innate talent. Wan Xiaoshan then approached a disheartened Qingwen, consoling him by mentioning the Ascension Token. Qingwen, surprised, explained the token's historical significance and pressed Wan Xiaoshan on how he knew of it.

Learning Han Li was the source, Qingwen immediately inquired about his whereabouts, causing Wan Xiaoshan to feign a stomach ache and flee. Han Li, aware of the danger the information posed, hid in a cave, planning to wait until the barrier lifted the next morning. He tore out the page about the token and burned it. Suddenly, a pursued Wan Xiaoshan stumbled into the cave, urging Han Li to run and warning him that Qingwen was dangerous before collapsing, dead.

His pursuers, Hu Pinggu and Wu Jiuzhi, cornered Han Li, demanding the "treasure." Knowing Qingwen was watching from the shadows, Han Li used a series of talismans to quickly defeat them. Qingwen then appeared, admitting he killed Wan Xiaoshan and used the others to test Han Li's strength. He threatened to frame Han Li for the three deaths, but Han Li countered by offering the Ascension Token to anyone who could kill Qingwen.

Before their fight could escalate, a powerful being known as the Ice Demon appeared. It declared that its master wanted Qingwen to live, meaning Han Li had to die. Unable to perceive the Ice Demon's movements, Han Li was forced to flee. As he escaped, a mysterious black-clothed figure emerged. The severely wounded Qingwen begged the figure for help to achieve Foundation Establishment.

The figure dismissed the Ascension Token as a mere "crumb" from the Seven Sects and agreed to grant his wish. Elsewhere, Nangong Wan sensed a powerful dark aura emanating from the area.
