Yu Jian Guo, shedding tears, recounted the immense suffering Ming Ming had endured since falling ill. He felt he had failed her and expressed his consent to disclose her true condition, unwilling to deny her the right to know. Bai Shu vehemently disagreed, finding the decision too cruel and blaming Xiao Yan before storming out. Xiao Yan, Bai Shu, and Yu Jian Guo then informed Ming Ming of her terminal illness.

Ming Ming, having already anticipated this outcome, calmly stated her last wishes. She desired to wear a white dress, red shoes, and white socks for a photograph, a picture to forever stay with her father. Overwhelmed with grief, Yu Jian Guo was heartbroken, but Ming Ming comforted him, urging him not to be sad. She advised him to find a new wife, marry again, and have a healthy child. Bai Shu, deeply affected, quietly left the room.

Yu Jian Guo bought the requested white dress and shoes, and Xiao Yan personally captured Ming Ming's final cherished moments. Later, Xiao Yan rode her motorcycle to the riverside for some solace. Bai Shu joined her, bringing a cup of coffee he enjoyed. He thanked Xiao Yan for her approach with Ming Ming, acknowledging that she was right, and their past grievances were cleared.

Bai Shu admitted that he had previously focused solely on the illness itself, neglecting the patient's personal feelings. Xiao Yan, in turn, opened up about her journey to becoming a doctor, which stemmed from witnessing a doctor's helplessness in the face of death—specifically, a news report about an emergency doctor who lost an 18-year-old patient.

She also recounted a poignant experience during her time with "Doctors Without Borders," where she lost an 8-year-old girl named Basmina, who was only eight, due to limited resources. Through these experiences, Xiao Yan realized that a doctor's mission is to stand by patients, fighting alongside them against disease and facing inevitable fate together. She concluded that medicine, at its core, is about humanity. Bai Shu, deeply inspired by her perspective, found common ground with Xiao Yan.

Returning home late, Bai Shu gazed at his sleeping son, Little Guang, reflecting on Xiao Yan's profound insights into life and recognizing the importance of empathy in his profession. Back at the Emergency Department, a 41-year-old patient arrived with sudden respiratory distress. Doctors Xu Yiran and Lu Ping'an struggled to identify the cause despite multiple examinations. Xu Yiran then sent Chen Zhi to invite Xiao Yan and personally called Bai Shu.

Bai Shu examined the patient and diagnosed a localized pneumothorax. Xiao Yan arrived shortly after and, upon examination, concurred, further specifying that it was likely located in the patient's back, which explained why it hadn't appeared on a standard chest X-ray. The attending physician swiftly initiated treatment. Bai Shu, realizing Xu Yiran's deliberate attempt to embarrass him by pitting him against Xiao Yan, turned and left in frustration.

As Xiao Yan and Tang Hua prepared for rounds, an ambulance brought in 80-year-old Zhang Gui Rong, who had suddenly collapsed during a walk. The preliminary diagnosis indicated a brain stem infarction. Xiao Yan immediately arranged for his transfer to the Emergency ICUs for urgent care. Meanwhile, Bai Shu confronted Xu Yiran about his earlier antics, but Xu Yiran dismissed it, even encouraging Bai Shu to see it as healthy competition with Xiao Yan.

Bai Shu was left speechless by Xu Yiran's flippant attitude. Little Lian, Zhang Gui Rong's companion, stood vigil outside his room. Xiao Yan learned from her that Zhang Gui Rong's grandson, Zhang Da Hai, lived in the city. Tang Hua was asked to call him. Zhang Da Hai arrived with a hostile demeanor, insisting the hospital was scamming them and demanding his grandfather be moved from the EICU, along with a refund.

Xiao Yan repeatedly explained the severity of Zhang Gui Rong's brain stem infarction and the life-threatening risks of moving him. Unrelenting, Zhang Da Hai caused a commotion in the hallway, attracting other patients' families. Observing this, Bai Shu discreetly messaged Xu Yiran to bring Zhang Gui Rong's outstanding medical bill. Lu Ping'an arrived with security, but Zhang Da Hai remained aggressive, threatening to report the hospital for fraud. Feeling helpless, Lu Ping'an was at a loss.

Bai Shu then presented Zhang Da Hai with a bill showing a ¥19,087. 12 deficit, demanding he pay it. Zhang Da Hai, momentarily stunned, feigned compliance and followed a security guard towards the cashier, only to slip away unnoticed. Bai Shu then smugly took credit, telling Xiao Yan that he had solved her problem. When Xiao Yan visited Zhang Gui Rong to discuss his ongoing treatment, he was anxious to know Zhang Da Hai's whereabouts.

Little Lian reluctantly explained the situation, advising Zhang Gui Rong not to give his gambling-addicted grandson another penny. Recognizing his limited time, Zhang Gui Rong decided to divide his remaining ¥40,000 between Little Lian and Zhang Da Hai. Little Lian, unable to sway him, called Zhang Da Hai. Zhang Da Hai, having lost all his money betting on a soccer match the previous night, confronted Zhang Gui Rong, demanding funds to pay off his loan sharks.

Zhang Gui Rong gave him ¥20,000. Dissatisfied, Zhang Da Hai complained that it wasn't enough, reminding his grandfather that he had already sold his house to cover previous gambling debts, leaving very little. Zhang Da Hai took the money and left sullenly. Little Lian urged Zhang Gui Rong to stop enabling his grandson, but Zhang Gui Rong felt helpless.

Little Lian then attempted to pay Zhang Gui Rong's hospital fees with the ¥20,000 he had given her, but Zhang Da Hai, who had been hiding, snatched it away. Xiao Yan brought Little Lian to her office, where Little Lian explained why she didn't want to report Zhang Da Hai to the police.

She recounted Zhang Gui Rong's past: he had once wanted to be a soldier but couldn't, so he pressured his son (Zhang Da Hai's father) to join the army. His son was tragically killed during flood relief, and his wife later passed away from grief, leaving two-year-old Zhang Da Hai orphaned. Zhang Gui Rong, consumed by guilt, felt he owed his grandson everything, spoiling him completely, which led to Zhang Da Hai's irresponsible and gambling habits.

Both Xiao Yan and Tang Hua were deeply moved by Zhang Gui Rong's plight. Meanwhile, Xu Yiran shrewdly pointed out Bai Shu's underlying motive: his constant competition with Xiao Yan was driven by a desire to defeat her and secure a justifiable return to the Cardiac Surgery Department. Bai Shu, however, vehemently denied this. Zhang Gui Rong's condition rapidly deteriorated, with multiple organ failure indicating little hope for recovery.

Despite this, Xiao Yan was determined to continue symptomatic treatment, unwilling to abandon him. Little Lian pleaded with Xiao Yan to let Zhang Gui Rong pass peacefully, but Xiao Yan insisted on waiting for Zhang Da Hai to arrive before making further decisions.
