Thank You Doctor Episode 32 Recap
> Thank You Doctor Recap
Xiao Yan informed Wang Qiang Jun that despite their best efforts, his daughter could not be saved. Wang Qiang Jun, with a numb expression, thanked her for her hard work. Later, a colleague observed Wang Qiang Jun's profound loneliness, noting his initial calm upon his daughter's death was a facade before he collapsed from overwhelming grief. Wang Qiang Jun regained consciousness to find Bai Shu attempting to examine him.
Agitated, he pulled out his IV drip, declaring he refused any checkups or treatment, and insisted on leaving to join his deceased wife and daughter. As Bai Shu tried to prevent him from leaving due to his unstable condition, Wang Qiang Jun suddenly brandished a pen, holding it to Bai Shu's neck. He stated he wouldn't harm Bai Shu but only wanted to leave the hospital and avoid treatment.
Both Bai Shu and Xiao Yan urged him to calm down and drop the pen, with Xiao Yan highlighting Bai Shu's role in saving many lives. Wang Qiang Jun remained firm, stating there was nothing to discuss. Sensing something deeper, Xiao Yan directly asked if he had also been diagnosed with severe pancreatitis, the same illness that claimed his wife and daughter. Her accurate assessment stunned Wang Qiang Jun, causing him to drop the pen.
Bai Shu then spoke passionately, asking Wang Qiang Jun to consider his wife and daughter's wishes for him to live well and appreciate life on their behalf. He shared a personal story about his son, Little Guang, who has bravely battled thalassemia since childhood, despite doctors predicting he wouldn't live past his first birthday. Now eight, Little Guang faces daily, agonizing flare-ups with a positive spirit.
Bai Shu emphasized that Wang Qiang Jun's illness was treatable and encouraged him to be stronger than a child, prompting Wang Qiang Jun to finally cooperate and return to his bed. Lu Ping'an confirmed that the police had been called to handle the Wang Qiang Jun incident and convened an emergency meeting. He used the recent patient incidents as a stark reminder.
Xiao Yan immediately took responsibility, admitting she had noticed Wang Qiang Jun's emotional distress but failed to give it sufficient attention. Other staff members also acknowledged their collective responsibility. Lu Ping'an, however, steered the conversation away from blame, commending their self-reflection. He acknowledged the immense and challenging workload of the Emergency Department and EICU, recognizing the significant pressure on the medical staff to not only treat illnesses but also manage the psychological well-being of patients and their families.
Despite these difficulties, he stressed that it was no excuse. He urged everyone to empathize with the profound pressure and pain experienced by patients and their loved ones when facing death, which can lead to extreme, potentially harmful reactions. He emphasized the crucial need to proactively monitor and support the mental state of patients and families, starting with every small detail, to prevent future violent incidents.
Later, Wang Qiang Jun approached Bai Shu and Xiao Yan, bowing deeply as he sincerely apologized for his earlier actions and expressed gratitude for their care. He promised to cooperate fully with his treatment and live well. Bai Shu, feeling relieved and wanting to thank Xiao Yan for her bravery, offered to treat their colleagues to a late-night snack. However, due to the late hour and the unpredictable nature of emergency calls, everyone was hesitant to go out.
Xu Yiran then suggested playing "Russian Roulette potato chips," explaining that one chip in a pack of six was extremely spicy, turning it into a fun game. Despite Bai Shu initially dismissing it as boring, everyone, including him and Xiao Yan, participated. After several turns where no one got the spicy chip, Bai Shu eventually took one that turned out to be the extremely spicy one.
He attempted to maintain a calm demeanor, but his face quickly betrayed the intense heat. Noticing his struggle, Xiao Yan subtly offered him a cup of water, which he gratefully accepted. As the inspection team for the Hospital Development Conference arrived at the Emergency Department, led by Xu Guoxing, Lu Ping'an frantically searched for Xu Yiran, suspecting he was intentionally avoiding his father due to their strained relationship.
Unable to locate him, Lu Ping'an assigned Tang Hua to host the delegation instead. During the tour of the EICU, Xu Guoxing, while praising Bai Shu's impressive academic and professional achievements, expressed disappointment in his own son, Xu Yiran. Tang Hua then highlighted Xiao Yan's distinguished background, including her recruitment from a Swiss hospital and her experience as a Rescue Without Borders doctor.
After the inspection, Xu Guoxing took Bai Shu aside, complimenting his personality and revealing he had observed his career since medical school. He extended a direct invitation to Bai Shu to join Ruirong Hospital, asking him to also persuade Xu Yiran. Bai Shu politely declined, apologizing that he couldn't assist with Xu Yiran. Xu Guoxing, explaining his son's stubbornness, suggested Bai Shu’s presence at Ruirong would sway Xu Yiran.
Bai Shu, however, asserted his respect for Xu Guoxing but stated his aversion to being treated as a "pawn." Xu Guoxing clarified that while Xu Yiran was a factor, his primary interest was Bai Shu’s talent, and he presented an enticing offer: guaranteed funding for research projects and the establishment of his own lab within five years at Ruirong.
Bai Shu acknowledged the attractive offer but reaffirmed his desire for freedom and to follow his own path, believing he wouldn't be a suitable subordinate for Xu Guoxing in the long run. Xu Guoxing lamented that Xu Yiran, like Bai Shu, was too stubborn and would never achieve a leadership position at Tongshan. Bai Shu countered that Xu Yiran’s motivation was simply the joy of saving lives, not career advancement.
He advised Xu Guoxing against imposing his will on Xu Yiran, warning it could be counterproductive, before excusing himself. Shortly after, Xu Yiran approached Bai Shu, who confirmed his father’s attempt to recruit him to Ruirong, primarily as a means to influence Xu Yiran. Bai Shu reiterated his steadfast refusal to compromise his principles for any person or offer. Later, Xiao Jing, who was at the hospital for her prenatal checkup, encountered Xu Yiran.
Noticing her drinking cold water, Xu Yiran invited her to his office for warm water. Xiao Jing then informed him that Xu Guoxing had asked her to persuade him to join Ruirong. She urged Xu Yiran to consider his father’s sincere intentions, reflecting on how, as a parent-to-be, she now understood the immense sacrifices parents make for their children. She shared an anecdote about a father in her department willing to risk infection to find a cure for his son.
Xiao Jing pointed out that Xu Guoxing harbored guilt over his divorce from Xu Yiran's mother and believed he had deprived Xu Yiran of a complete family. Consequently, he sought to compensate by meticulously planning Xu Yiran's future and engaging in networking, activities he previously disliked. Xu Yiran acknowledged his father's controlling nature and underlying plea, admitting he usually acquiesced. However, this time, he was firm in his desire to live life according to his own aspirations.
Xiao Jing encouraged him to have an open conversation with his father, suggesting that children often realize their parents' love too late. Unbeknownst to them, Xu Guoxing was listening to their entire conversation from outside the office. Xiao Jing received a call from her anxious mother-in-law, prompting Xu Yiran to quickly escort her out. Upon seeing them, Xiao Jing's mother-in-law immediately berated Xu Yiran, sternly warning him to stay away from her pregnant daughter-in-law before pulling Xiao Jing away.
Xu Guoxing, observing this interaction, remarked with regret that Xiao Jing, such a kind girl, had married into a difficult family, hinting at his unspoken wish for her to have been with Xu Yiran. Xu Yiran, attempting to leave, was stopped by his father, who asked if he had truly made up his mind about not returning to Ruirong. Xu Yiran firmly reiterated his contentment at Tongshan.
Surprisingly, Xu Guoxing accepted his decision, telling him to live as he wished and bidding him farewell. Before his father left, Xu Yiran called out to him, advising him to prioritize his health despite his busy work schedule, recognizing his father’s aging. Xu Guoxing, visibly touched, responded playfully yet warmly, affirming his own vitality for another two decades.
Later, Bai Shu checked on a reflective Xu Yiran, who admitted that seeing his father say goodbye made him realize how much his father had aged. He questioned whether his past stubbornness in trying to distance himself from his father was wrong, regretting not considering his father's feelings, especially as he was an only child.
Bai Shu comforted him by sharing his own experience with Little Guang, explaining that he initially struggled to connect with him until a moment when Little Guang sought him out in a nightmare, making Bai Shu feel profoundly "needed." He concluded that having someone to care for is indeed the greatest happiness. Meanwhile, Jiang Zhongjing reviewed the latest monthly assessment, revealing that the EICU had the highest number of patient complaints.
He summoned Lu Ping'an, having personally re-verified the accuracy of the results. Jiang Zhongjing acknowledged the EICU's nascent stage and inherent challenges but expressed his deep disappointment and the difficulty he faced in justifying the high complaint volume to other hospital departments, especially given his strong advocacy for its establishment. While Lu Ping'an attempted to highlight the EICU's successes in saving critical patients, Jiang Zhongjing cut him off.
He firmly reminded Lu Ping'an that the EICU's core mission was to provide the highest quality service and save lives, always prioritizing the patients. He delivered a stern ultimatum: if any further significant issues arose within the next six months, Lu Ping'an would be held personally accountable. An ambulance arrived at the Emergency Department, bringing in a 62-year-old woman with 20% burns and a 65-year-old man, Bi Guohua, with 85% burns.
The woman was found performing CPR on Bi Guohua when paramedics arrived. Bai Shu examined the woman, who was anxious for news about Bi Guohua. Simultaneously, doctors performed an emergency chest escharotomy on Bi Guohua in the EICU due to his severe chest burns. The woman's son and daughter-in-law soon arrived, distraught and furious upon learning she was still seeing Bi Guohua, whom they disparagingly called "that old fool."
Bai Shu intervened, asking the family to leave so the patient could rest. Police officers Zhang and Rui then arrived to investigate the fire. The son, worried about the financial implications, urged his mother to reveal the truth, holding Bi Guohua responsible for the fire that destroyed his house and damaged a nearby convenience store, estimating the cost at ¥150,000 to ¥160,000.
After initial reluctance, the old woman admitted that Bi Guohua had been sick with a cold and had used an electric heater. She had given him medicine and fallen asleep on the sofa, only to wake up to a raging fire. After the police departed, her son and daughter-in-law resumed scolding her for her relationship with Bi Guohua. The old woman then explained her actions, stating that Bi Guohua was "willing to stay by me."
She lamented that she rarely saw her own children or granddaughter Miao Miao, emphasizing that despite his flaws, Bi Guohua provided the companionship she craved in her old age, walking and chatting with her daily. Her children expressed remorse and promised to spend more time with her, but she responded with a resigned "It's too late."
A nurse then commented on the situation, referring to it as "an old house on fire," a saying that implies seniors falling uncontrollably in love, and mused that an "old companion" is precisely what one needs in old age. The medical team was instructed to carefully manage the burn patient's medication to prevent infection. A pregnant woman, Sun Fang Min, was brought into the Emergency Department by her parents, who were forcibly restraining her.
Her parents explained that Sun Fang Min suffered from lymphangioleiomyomatosis and insisted on carrying her baby to term, despite their objections and the grave risks. Xiao Yan noted Sun Fang Min’s dangerously low oxygen saturation, explaining that her persistent coughing and hemoptysis (coughing blood), which her parents confirmed happened daily, were symptoms of hypoxia caused by her underlying condition. Sun Fang Min contended that her research indicated patients with lymphangioleiomyomatosis and normal lung function could have children.
However, Xiao Yan clarified that Sun Fang Min had severe cystic lung disease, which significantly compromised her lung's gas exchange capability. Xiao Yan warned that as her pregnancy advanced, her condition would rapidly worsen, directly endangering her life, and strongly advised immediate termination of the pregnancy. Sun Fang Min remained resolute, declaring, "I must give birth to the baby."
Her distressed parents pleaded with Xiao Yan for help, explaining they had sought advice from numerous hospitals, all of which had advised against continuing the pregnancy, yet Sun Fang Min remained unyielding. They expressed their helplessness as they watched her health decline daily, recounting how they had to physically force her to the hospital. Xiao Yan inquired if anyone was pressuring Sun Fang Min or if there was an underlying reason for her stubbornness.
Her parents affirmed that no one, not even her in-laws, was coercing her. Desperate, they asked if there was any medication to induce an abortion. Xiao Yan unequivocally stated that such action was strictly prohibited, emphasizing that while medical professionals advised termination, the ultimate decision rested solely with the patient.
Xiao Yan reassured the parents that the hospital would do its utmost to provide care, including observation and consultation with specialists, and encouraged them to continue persuading Sun Fang Min, promising that the medical team would also speak with her.
