Thank You Doctor Episode 27 Recap
> Thank You Doctor Recap
Chen Zhi commented to Bai Shu that the young couple they had treated earlier had reconciled, noting that Bai Shu's advice seemed to echo Xiao Yan's philosophy of looking beyond just the illness to the person. Meanwhile, Bai Shu was frustrated, making a phone call to complain that a pair of shoes he ordered online hadn't shipped, threatening to report the company to the Commerce Bureau.
Shortly after, a 28-year-old woman named Xiao Jing, who was 32 weeks pregnant, was rushed to Tongshan Hospital's Emergency Department by her anxious husband and in-laws, suffering from severe abdominal pain. Xiao Yan suspected acute appendicitis and ordered blood work and an ultrasound. Xiao Jing's mother-in-law vehemently opposed the ultrasound, fearing radiation would harm her unborn grandchild.
Despite Tang Hua's reassurance that ultrasounds are radiation-free, the mother-in-law remained insistent until Xiao Jing’s husband also confirmed the safety of the procedure, finally convincing her to relent. The tests confirmed Xiao Yan's suspicion: Xiao Jing had acute suppurative appendicitis, requiring immediate surgery to prevent perforation, which could lead to sepsis, intestinal necrosis, and other life-threatening complications.
The mother-in-law, recalling her own appendicitis being treated with medication years ago, adamantly refused surgery, fearing for her grandchild's safety and the risk of miscarriage. Tang Hua tried to reason with her, leading to a heated argument. Just then, Xu Yiran arrived and recognized Xiao Jing as his kind former neighbor and first love from five years and three months ago. He urged Xiao Yan to proceed with the surgery.
Seeing the mother-in-law’s persistent refusal and distress, Xu Yiran pretended to agree to hold off on the surgery, requesting the Head Nurse to move Xiao Jing back to a different area. He then strategically sent the mother-in-law and father-in-law away with Xiao Yan and Lu Ping’an, suggesting they discuss treatment options in a more spacious area to ensure good airflow for Xiao Jing and the baby.
Once alone with Xiao Jing’s husband, Xu Yiran emphasized the severe danger of acute suppurative appendicitis, asking if he was willing to watch her suffer. Both Xiao Jing and her husband then agreed to the urgent surgery. Xu Yiran swiftly had Xiao Jing taken to the operating room. When the in-laws returned and discovered Xiao Jing was already in surgery, the mother-in-law became furious, but Lu Ping'an managed to calm her, assuring her that he would handle any repercussions.
The surgery was successful, with Xiao Jing's appendix removed just in time as it was already suppurative and on the verge of perforating. The fetus was continuously monitored and remained stable throughout the procedure. Despite the successful outcome, the mother-in-law still complained about the doctors' perceived rudeness. Lu Ping'an offered to escort them to the EICU. Later, while Xiao Jing was recovering, the mother-in-law still expressed worry that she hadn't woken up.
Observing the situation, Xu Yiran confided in Xiao Yan his regret for not proposing to Xiao Jing years ago, lamenting that she ended up with such an unreasonable family. Later, Bai Shu, after ordering shoes for Xiao Yan online, discreetly presented them to her in the office, claiming Little Guang had bought them with his allowance. He even helped her try them on.
Tang Hua and Lin Zhi walked in on the scene, with Lin Zhi quickly identifying the shoes as a new classic model that was cheaper online. Tang Hua, however, immediately saw through Bai Shu's act, deducing he was again using Little Guang’s name to curry favor with Xiao Yan, just like with the neck pillow previously. Embarrassed, Xiao Yan quickly made an excuse to check on patients and left.
Xu Yiran later teased Bai Shu about the incident, warning him that giving shoes to a woman traditionally means encouraging her to leave. At lunchtime, Lin Zhi jokingly tried to seat Xiao Yan and Bai Shu together, causing Xiao Yan further embarrassment. She left without eating, with Bai Shu following her, but he ultimately decided to give her space and left. Later, Xu Yiran encouraged Xiao Yan not to miss out on Bai Shu, hinting at his own past regrets.
Xiao Yan retorted, asking if he had ever missed a chance, to which he admitted he had and now regretted it. A young boy named Jun Jun was brought to the Emergency Department by his older brother due to a persistent high fever. Bai Shu began examining him. Xiao Yan approached Bai Shu to discuss something, but Jun Jun suddenly suffered respiratory distress and lost consciousness.
Xiao Yan promptly stepped in to assess him, noting decreased breathing on his left side, a rapid heart rate, and his blood oxygen level at 88 percent. She immediately called for an ultrasound machine. Bai Shu confirmed a large pleural effusion in Jun Jun's left chest cavity and ordered chest drainage.
Chen Zhi was tasked with performing the thoracentesis after Jun Jun's brother provided consent, with Bai Shu explaining the procedure was necessary to drain fluid for testing to determine the cause of the effusion and guide treatment. After the procedure, Jun Jun's lab results showed high white blood cells and C-reactive protein, and increased protein and cells in his pleural effusion, indicative of an infection.
Bai Shu then went to find Xiao Yan, but Zheng Yajie, who had returned early from her training due to excellent performance, suddenly burst into the office and hugged Bai Shu, expressing possessiveness and concern that someone might "steal" him away. Xiao Yan, feeling awkward, quickly excused herself to check on patients, and Bai Shu followed her.
Zheng Yajie then sought out Xu Yiran to inquire about Bai Shu's relationship with Xiao Yan, and later directly confronted Xiao Yan, declaring her intention to compete fairly for Bai Shu. Following these incidents, Xiao Yan began actively avoiding Bai Shu, who, meanwhile, was occupied by Jun Jun's deteriorating condition. Jun Jun suddenly experienced a seizure, prompting Bai Shu to order an immediate cranial CT scan.
The scan revealed a brain abscess, which Bai Shu explained was a purulent infection, not a tumor. He stated it could be treated with antibiotics, but might eventually require surgery if it continued to grow or affected brain function. When asked about possible sources of infection, Jun Jun's brother explained that their parents had passed away, and Jun Jun lived with him and his wife, but he was often too busy with work to track Jun Jun's activities.
Jun Jun initially denied swimming or eating unclean food. When Jun Jun's brother stepped away to answer a phone call from his wife, who was expressing annoyance about him not coming home, Jun Jun confided in Bai Shu that he had lied. He admitted to going swimming with classmates at a crowded pool the previous weekend and concealed it because his brother and sister-in-law often argued over his care, and he didn't want to cause further trouble.
Bai Shu also discovered severe tooth decay in Jun Jun's mouth, which was determined to be the likely entry point for Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, which then spread through his bloodstream to his lungs and brain, causing the abscess. Bai Shu assured Jun Jun he would get better with treatment and likely surgery to drain the pus, to which his brother agreed. Bai Shu advised Jun Jun to avoid crowded places and sweets in the future.
Later, as Jun Jun was preparing for discharge, Chen Zhi reminded his brother about proper sterilization of his clothes to prevent future infections. Earlier, an elderly female patient, Ma Hui Zhen, who was recovering from minimally invasive surgery, visited Xiao Yan and Tang Hua. She shared traditional Chinese medicine advice and offered them medicinal herbs, which they politely declined due to hospital policy.
Xiao Yan assured her that she valued traditional Chinese medicine and promised to visit her clinic for a consultation when they had time, insisting she would pay as a regular patient. Tang Hua later expressed surprise at Xiao Yan's openness to traditional Chinese medicine, given her Western medicine background, but Xiao Yan explained that Western and Chinese medicine are not conflicting approaches, drawing a parallel to how the elderly patient embraced both for her own recovery.
Lin Zhi, still observant, asked Xiao Yan if she was having issues with Bai Shu, remarking on her apparent avoidance of him. Xiao Yan firmly denied any conflict, stating they were simply colleagues, and instructed Lin Zhi to focus on her work. That evening, as Ding Xiao Ying walked home after her shift, she noticed a motorcyclist following her. She quickly hailed a taxi driven by Ma Hui Zhen. The motorcyclist continued to pursue them.
Suddenly, Ma Hui Zhen experienced an unexpected illness, losing control of the vehicle. The taxi crashed into the roadside, and the motorcyclist, unable to stop, was thrown a considerable distance. All three were brought to the Emergency Department. Ding Xiao Ying, shaken but conscious, immediately urged Xiao Yan to call the police, identifying the motorcyclist as a pervert who had been stalking her.
Bai Shu quickly assessed the motorcyclist, finding a ruptured spleen, and ordered immediate surgery, contacting Director Cao of Gastrointestinal Surgery and the blood bank. Police from Tuan Jie Road Police Station arrived, investigating the incident. Surveillance footage confirmed Ding Xiao Ying’s account of being followed by the motorcyclist. The police identified the motorcyclist as a suspect in several recent assaults on women and found photos of Ding Xiao Ying on his phone.
Since he was in hypovolemic shock after his splenectomy and still unconscious, the police took his phone for evidence and arranged for an officer to monitor him. Meanwhile, Ma Hui Zhen, apologetic for the accident, explained she suddenly lost control and assured Ding Xiao Ying that her company's insurance would cover all medical expenses.
